I can only speak as a renter. We have FREE laundry in the basement but the landlord limits us to two days a week. If there were to offer In-Unit laundry, I would absolutely pay $50+ more a month. I don't know if you can legally change the rental terms in the middle of a lease (get rid of the machines or raise the rent) but certainly a couple months prior to everyone's renewal, you can let them know in a letter the new terms of the lease if they would like to continue renting from you.

M in Lincoln Square, My co-worker said they looked to be about 18 and they wore black hoodies but they had black hats on and were not wearing the hood. She didnt mention backpacks.
Something tells me that there are a group of them. All dressing the same. When I lived in Rogers park, all the gangs in the area would wear white t-shirts and black jeans. That way, if they needed to make a run for it, there would be too many fitting the description of the person the police were looking for. Therefore, it would be hard to identify which one was the one who did the crime.

On the subject that Catbus brought up....Sunday mornings around 8am taking Montrose west you get a lot of drivers that dont stop for stop signs AND blow all red lights. Its like I am in a completely different country.
I have also seen the overly cautious who pause at every intersection from California to Cicero, I think it is in anticipation of the first kind of drivers I mentioned. LOL

Crossing guards can anticipate a large number of kids crossing at one time. So you may have kids crossing in the street and at the same time as kids about to get to the curb. The Guard will hold traffic a little longer to accommodate this.

UPDATE: So the lady that had the purse snatched was a mom with a stroller. The purse was hanging on the stroller so that when the doors opened, the guys snatched the purse and ran off the train. Lots of people got up and one man ran off after them. He tackled one of them and although my co-worker thinks the lady got the purse back, there was a lot of commotion to know for sure. The other guy got away.
They wore jeans, knit hats and black hooded jackets.

I drove down Lincoln today headed towards Lincoln Park and there are a ton of them. I know you don't have to stop unless there are pedestrians. My problem is you really have to do 20 in the areas that have that signs because pedestrians will just start walking in the crosswalk, no warning. If you are doing 30 (or more) and someone decided to cross just as you have approached the signs, you will not be able to stop. Its a little irritating.
My personal choice when walking around is to cross at a light or jay walk when no cars are present.

A similar situation happened to us last week. We live in Ravenswood Manor just west of the river, Around 8pm our doorbell rang. My husband went to look and it was a man who wore a big black hat, the kind similar to what orthodox Jews would wear. My husband stood at a distance from our front glass door while the man asked for some woman. My husband cannot recall the name but he told the man in the hat that no one lived here by that name. He was kinda pushy saying that this was the address he had. My husband said that the address must be wrong. Apparently the man seemed mad but went away.
We rent so we just assumed that there had been someone who lived here with that name prior to us. But seeing this posting, I asked my landlord, who lives in our building and he said that unfortunately, about two weeks ago, a man fitting our description came to the door during the day asking for a woman. He also does not remember the name but said no one with the name had ever lived in the building.
Now we are a little uneasy.

My issue is the expense. My connection with Comcast is good and we have our own personal wireless router and have TV hookup which is why we dont need Cable TV. But I pay $75 for just internet. No phone (we have cells), not cable (not needed). I am certain the reason why the bill is so high is because we literally have 2 choices and they know it.

— On the neighbor message Cable internet in Albany Park

There are no options other than AT&T or Comcast and they know it. I pay $75 for internet only from Comcast. It was originally $30ish then went to $52 once the 6mo trial ended but after 6 months at that rate, they jacked it up to $75.

Hey, did anyone figure out that red salsa recipe? We used to go there all the time when we lived in Jeff park but then we moved. I know Juan was trying to sell the real estate initially, not the business. The taxes got too high. But i guess he didn't get a buyer so he had to close.
I remember once asking if there was cream in that salsa and they said "no". They said there was garlic, chiles and tomatoes pureed but not sure of what kind of chiles, ratio of ingredients or if there was in fact anything else in it. All I know is for sure there wasn't any cream.

Hi Angela,
We are in the same boat. We had PPO and delivered at Prentice. For the first year we went to Northwestern Children's Practice and loved it. Then, we had to get the BCBS HMO because we couldn't afford the deductibles of the HMO.

We live near Swedish Covenant and choose Dr. Sagan based on Yelp reviews. At the beginning of the year our son got really sick. We had problems making an appt with Dr. Sagan office as a new patient which caused a four day delay for an appointment. Meanwhile, our son got so sick that we had to take him to the ER. There wasn't much of a wait and they were thorough. It didn't measure up the NWMH but it was still good.

We had to follow up with Dr. Sagan the next day, but it was a Friday and he didn't have hours on Fridays. We saw another doctor in that office. I didn't like her. In fact, when we explained that we had to switch from NWMH, and that we took our son to SCH since our new doctor was based there, she said that when we take our son to the ER, we can take him anywhere and that we should have taken him the NWMH. I was really mad. It was like a slap in the face.

I have yet to make an appt with Dr. Sagan. If he still doesn't have Friday hours, then I will have to choose someone else. We like to have our son get the vaccines on Fridays and we stay home with that day so we can watch for a reaction that day and the weekend.

I feel bad, we are behind on our vax's but I feel so lost about doctors right now.

So where are the seniors supposed to go?

— On the neighbor message Corner Building Rockwell and Evergreen?
2:01 p.m.

When I search "senior housing in humboldt park" it comes up with a few in a concentrated area but I don't think that this is all of them seeing as the one on Campbell is not listed.

I want to say that there are an incredible amount of elderly who cannot support themselves. Both my parents worked their whole lives and cannot sustain themselves in retirement. There are a lot of others who are way worse off.

In a perfect world, seniors would be able to remain independent and live out their remaining years enjoying life. We are nowhere near this world. It is truly unfortunate but the need for senior housing exists or I should say, the need for clean, safe and affordable senior housing exists. Especially in the city where seniors can continue to get around on public transit and remain as independent as possible.

I wish there was a better solution.

— On the neighbor message Corner Building Rockwell and Evergreen?

Do you have elderly parents or relatives? Would you really want them living in section 8 housing?

Also, businesses all over are going under. 4 small boutiques and 2 restaurants have closed EAST of Western on Division all within the last few months.

I admit that I am uneducated in the way subsidized housing effects small businesses but one thing I have learned in life is that when things go wrong in a community, its rarely ever just ONE thing that did it.

In the meantime, I will definitely have to read up on this subject. I can only see from my own personal experience at the moment and at times, this is not enough.

Thanks to everyone for allowing this dialogue!!!

Rakarwowski, I should also add...I am sure that before HP was Polish it was some other group before that and before that.

— On the neighbor message Corner Building Rockwell and Evergreen?
7:17 a.m.

Rakarwowski, had I been alive to see the predominantly Polish Humboldt Park neighborhood be changed into another strong culture (in this case Puerto Ricans), I would have been saddened. I like walking into neighborhoods which are culturally strong and at the same time I realize that we all have to live together and at some point there will not be any predominantly Polish, PR, Chinese, Indian, ect neighborhood. That makes me sad but it has to be.

Gangs pulled down Polish statues. Gangs also ruin the PR fest.

Even if the Gang is primarily a particular race/culture, it is NOT that race or culture. It is a Gang first and foremost. You cannot tell me that the Puerto Ricans feel represented by Gangs made up of Puerto Ricans. If I live in a white neighborhood, and there are white Gangs, am I part of the Gang or part of the neighborhood?

As for me in HP. I have family there. I tried to live there but I could not deal with the Gangs. I am half Swedish and even though I have ties to the neighborhood I sure to it seemed like I was part of the gentrification movement. I moved but I still go to visit family a few times a week.

— On the neighbor message Corner Building Rockwell and Evergreen?
7:10 a.m.

I apologize. I was not clear. My "silly people" comment was directed towards people who have forgotten that Puerto Ricans are not the problem in HP. In fact, PR's were in HP for a long time during less volatile times. I wanted to clarify again that Gangs are the problem, which consists of many different races.

I also wanted to note that all low income housing is not bad (i.e the Teresa Roldan building). I know many upstanding seniors who live in that building.

And yes, Puerto Ricans are not as prevalent in that area as they used to be. I am personally saddened by that. Every area in the city has a character that is shaped by its most prevalent inhabitants. I am all for diversification but at some point when gentrification/gangs/or another major group takes over an area that has a uniformed strong culture then traditions and authenticity tend to get washed away.

— On the neighbor message Corner Building Rockwell and Evergreen?
10:56 p.m.

Silly people.... HP has been primarily Puerto Rican since the 50's. Puerto Rican heritage in HP is what MAKES HP so beautiful. Now, over the last 20+ years gangs have over-run the area but these gangs include all races.
Oh, and I am white, have a nice paying job and I love Flaming Hots!

Nicole, you may want to "feel out" your particular area in HP before you walk alone at night or during the early a.m. You will probably be OK but you may want to get a little comfortable with your new surroundings first.
Somethings that have helped me:
-Stay off the cell phone when you walk, but have it close at hand (so you can be better aware of the things around you).
-Wear purses that you wear across the body (avoid shoulder purses and book bags).
-If you do not feel safe and have long hair, tie your hair in a small bun while you walk outside. This makes it harder for someone to grab your hair from behind.
*I have to say that I would give you this advice regardless of where you live in the city.

We lived on Campbell near Division a few years ago. The people who have lived there for years are amazingly warm and kind, its the gangs that ruined it. We were kind of nervous coming home at night because gang activity was usually more prevalent but you get that in most areas of the city. Hi Gretchen, I am at at the 4400 block of N California. Let me know if there is anything I can do on my end!

4:22 p.m.

Interesting. I work near city hall and a co-worker and I saw two little dead birds within the last week. I didnt really think about it until now. I am really stumped.
To colleen: I googled rat poision and dogs chicago and there are a few articles that say rat poision contributed to their dogs death.

4:02 p.m.

To clcb, the only thing is that the first squirrel we encountered, we didnt know it. It was at night and we heard an animal moaning in the tall grass below a tree near our apartment. I wasnt sure if it was a possum or cat, if it was hurt or in heat. We could see it. The next morning, there was a dead squirrel on the sidewalk. Two more dead squirrels have turned up since. The last one with blood around mouth and its end. I am not totally convinced its poision but I dont see what else it could be.

10:04 a.m.
It looks like the city laid down poison on Sept 13th but I am not sure if they did beyond lincoln square. Also, I wonder if they are using stronger stuff?

10 a.m.

I checked out our alley today and there are the yellow rat poison signs but they are not dated. I have seen, in the past, the city would use a permanent marker and date the signs. I will add that my husband said that the last dead squirrel he saw had blood coming out of its orifices. I apologize for the description but to me, that definitely points to poisoning. Since it seems to be city-wide, I'm thinking the city put out fresh rat poison.

8:32 p.m.

Hi Lauren, I live at the 4400 block of N California and I was actually about to post something similar. I too have encountered 3 dead squirrels within the last week. It is more than likely poison. I think that they are getting ready for winter and are hungry. At first I thought a neighbor might have put poison out but now that I see your post, I wonder if they put out fresh rat poison in the alleys. They usually post signs with the dates that they last laid the stuff down. I will have to go and check our alley tomorrow.
