Community Gardens in Uptown area

I'm waiting to see posts about our local community gardens, but nothing so far. Does anyone have info on ground-breakings in and around Uptown/Edgewater/Andersonville? They usually kick off this time of year and I don't want to miss out on obtaining a small plot. Thanks, neighbors! :)

  • Are you familiar with Weiss Hospital's Urban Rooftop Farm? It's on top of their parking garage at Weiss Hospital. Website to contact its managers is here: http://loudgradeproducesquad.org/

  • Some of the schools have raised beds that need tending over the summer. I recommend contacting the Alderman's office. Registration for Peterson Garden Project plots is closed, but you may want to contact them anyway. http://petersongarden.org/

Fire in Uptown

Gunfire Outside Starbucks

There was a flurry of gunfire outside Starbucks on Wilson (10-15 shots) last evening.

Now you know.

The alderman recommends you call 911 and attend a CAPS meeting where you will be told to call 911 more often and think about "Positive Loitering", stay tuned for email blast to let you know he is "on it".

There has been an uptick in shootings in Sheridan Park lately, its likely to increase with the warmness, less activity east on Wilson maybe try Everybody's Coffee for a while...a better brew anyway.

Alderman Cappleman Utterly Confused

I have a CappleFlier that connects Crawford to the BP oil spill.....the 1%....etc.

I have another that connects her to Shiller and radical left politics.

The campaign "team Cappleman" is running is sleazy and disingenuous just like the way he has governed. The tactic of broadcasting B.S. by U.S. Mail is nothing new, the confusion is notable.

Cappleman and company can't seem to figure out which line if sleaze to stick to, corporate shrill....or a radical ala Che Guevara. Nobody can be both and Amy is neither.

Crawford has achieved more success in her professional life at 38 then Cappleman now well into his sixties ever will.

I am voting for the more ethical and competent one...Amy Crawford.

Dog in City Park/ Playground

I live next to the Cedar Playlot on Winthrop Ave. People keep taking their dogs in there early in the morning and letting them off the lease to run gand per. The signage clearly says no dogs. One day I call someone out on it and they said. There aren't any kids in here. To which I replied, "The sign doesn't say 'No Dogs, Except when there are no kids present". I am a dog fan but I am also a rules fan. Any suggestions for how to deal with this?

  • Julia Z-N Andersonville Dog Mama

What if your dog doesn't like kids and a bunch of parents turned their dogs loose in a dog park. As silly as that sounds, you wouldn't like it one bit(excuse the pun).

I don;t think permit parking will at all deter someone who is about to shoot someone. "Oh, Darn (my orginal word got edited out) says the criminal, I need a permit to park here to shoot them, (buy drugs, etc) guess I'll just skip it" As far as cameras being installed in "problem: buildings--the buildings are private property..not the cities and it would be up to the owner to install and it is very doubtful they will. Frankly I don t think the Alderman knows how to solve the problem if he did I think he would have put these things into place. but I think he would welcome any new ideas..It is a very very complex problem

I think this flier by Amy Crawford deserves points for style and graphic use of white space.

Also it is an intriguing minimalist device metaphorically visualizing four years of CappleThings becoming nothingness.

The YouTube link you forwarded was a bit boogie-woogie for me, but I enjoyed. Would like to check out some earlier stuff based on the Wikipedia article.

Longhair with the Meters was completely fascinating. Two pianos, congas, made for TV audience--definitely will check out more of his/their stuff and dust off some of my old Meters stuff. Seems like Longhair gave the Meters a bit of an edge that they missed, at least in what I've heard. Great link.

No mystery where my piano interests lie: check out late 50s to mid 60s, especially Monk's Music, Carnegie Hall (with Coltrane), and Live at the It Club. Crazy, mind blowing stuff. Amazing music for that time, and still unreplicated.

AlderTrack Updates Local Election (46th)

From WBEZ website:

I agree with Mr. Fourcher....Amy has momentum and has been out there engaging more voters for the first time. Cappleman has been an online campaign, lacking depth and reach. Besides the parody websites and such expect more dirty tricks in the last two weeks.

One example:

I was chair of the Art Committee for Cappleman's one time attempt at Participatory Budgeting.

-The proposal was a laser-cut steel mural on Lawrence to be facilitated by Architreasures.

-Three large sculptural bike racks at Lawrence/Broadway, Buena Park/location TBD, and at Sheridan and Broadway/Gill Park. The racks would have been functional art and chosen by another vote, we would have had a competition of proposals from Chicago metal sculptures. Supporting local artists by challenging local artists, installing quality art with function and beauty.

The projects never happened because...it came in 7 out of the 6 that won in voting.

However...the rules were that if a "winning" project was not good-to-go the funding would go to the next project in line. One of those 6 was "Shermon Plaza", remember that? The plan was to cut-off Sheridan at Montrose to create a triangle plaza. It never happened because of pushback from CDOT.

Why the art projects which would have cost a fraction of that were never funded I never got an answer but not for a lack of asking.

Cappleman cannot handle it, he dropped the ball and there are other examples I know of first-hand.

I support Amy Crawford, I believe she has the skills and the sensibility to support and facilitate art projects in a competent manner.

Talk is cheap and that is all Cappleman has to offer.

The art below was done by me but it doesn't belong to me, it belongs to you the community.

I didn't paint the mural at Winthrop/Argyle, I only repiared it after an unfortunate roofing accident in coordination with Uptown United and Bro. Elder the artist.

I have a suggestion balance the blandness of these points:

Why don't we convene a Sheridan Park wide community meeting every month at Truman either before or after the CAPS meeting?

At this time we have no regularly scheduled community meeting, it could be used to discuss/debrief how to utilize the raw data from the CAPS, build relationships across the community, plan events, build community...etc.

A stronger community with tighter relationships will cut down on crime more the positive loitering ever could do in my opinion.

Who could convene such a monthly community meeting? Alderman Cappleman? I do not think so...he is all about the punitive measure and cannot attract more then a pitiful few to a corner for PL. The alderman has an ongoing dysfunctional relationship with half the community and we need that half involved.

I believe Amy Crawford can do it. She is not stuck with these same lame ineffective strategies that accomplish nothing. We can solve a lot of these problems ourselves. we just need a different structure and the space to make it happen.

Did CappleArtist really do that? Its actually one his better composition.

All of his compositions are flat as a pancake, he wouldn't recognize a focal point if he walked into/on one.

Public Art by Etsy?

Has anybody else noticed the artwork at Larence Redline?

Ald. Cappleman says it reflects the "diversity" of the "ward" but I am not seeing it. It is kind of folksy, whimsical, and uses arabic geometry in some of the pieces.

But most of all it seems cheap. The budget was $20,000-30,000 and the city with nary a peep of protest from the Alderman Art-Critique overlooked the local Chicago artists to give the commission to an artist in....Alabama. Talk ois cheap,...

Talk ois cheap, politicians like Cappleman say they support artists, here was an opportunity lost.

While Argyle station in Osterman's ward got a beautiful glazed ceramic and glass piece by local talent Lynn Basa...we got...

A laser-cut PVC sheet of folksy bugs and stylized plants. PVC the same stuff we use for drains. The work is covered in cheap plexiglass about 3/8th of an inch. It is very prone to scratching, clouding, and breaking off eventually. At the very least it needs more clamp screws please.

The cut-outs are "open work", so is the metal mesh of the stair-wall the art is installed upon. The juxtaposition of these two completely unrelated patterns seems like a lack of foresight. The artist can be forgiven for that she lives in Alabama after all, I am sure the artist never intended for her work to compete with wire mesh..

This is what we get? This is going to be the art that hangs in one of the gateways to the "Entertainment District" which is proposed?

The community needs to have a serious discussion of what we want this "District" to become. For the budget we could have done a LOT better then this. So many artists submitted how did this happen?

AlderTweet....."A shout out to the @cta for the new art installation at Lawrence L. All the pieces reflect the diversity of the area."

Well...that is the project on hold downtown with the planning department. Not everyone is as impressed.

I hope Lowell gets to do his color wheel design, but yea...its on hold buddy with th planning dept.

What do you like about the Lawrence CTA art...besides that its not grafitti?

It is unimpressive and low quality materials. Public art needs to be durable at the very least.

    I will take the non-answer as....not much.

Many sirens at Granville and Sheridan

Anyone know what's going on? Sheridan is closed northbound; 147 bus rerouted.

  • Teri Cassidy edgewater beach resident

I live in the building and I posted on this site as the fire was happening. My post never appeared. The fire was on 23rd floor. It started on a pile of clothing. It was put out quickly.

  • Next time get it right Teri!!! People were in panic not knowing what the hell was going on. This is just unacceptable!!

Donating magazines, any ideas?

We have several magazine subscriptions and are looking to donate many months worth rather than recycle them. Does anyone have any ideas of where we can donate them in our community?

  • Also, the Lakeview YMCA takes donated magazines, I think.

CappleTruthing #46thward

Below is a photo of one of Cappleman's mailers.

He is quoting a crime trend fro a full 10 years before he was elected in 2011.

See it for yourself it it curious.

This is also disingenuous and sneaky in my opinion.

Man hit by car

Please be cautious when crossing the streets. We just witnessed an elderly man pushing his grocery cart get hit by a car attempting to beat the red light at Balmoral & Broadway.

I have a right tibia full of hardware (eventually led to needing a total knee replacement) because some idiot in Evanston turned right into my path when I was crossing with the "walk" sign. It was after dark, he didn't have his lights on, didn't stop--but argued that I was negligent for not seeing his white car, not getting out of his way (I already had one bum knee and could neither run nor dart), and for wearing black after sunset. Both the traffic court judge and his own lawyer (after my deposition in the lawsuit) decided I was in the right.

Here we go again...another shooting.

What is going on in Sheridan Park?? It seems Uptown shootings have been moving west of Broadway with more regularity. Another shooting which is perhaps retaliation to the Malden shooting a few days ago. I frequent the area and occasionally see some shady folks but I've never felt uncomfortable. Where are these people coming from?http://www.uptownupdate.com/2015/02/man-shot-on-4700-block-of-beacon.html?m=1

Also...The Non profits running these gang incubators need to fbe forced into some accountability as well.

Its a right lucrative (non) profitable business they are in and their willful deliberate blindness to the problem of gangs finding safe have in their properties like 4650 Malden should no longer be tolerated.

But you won't see Ryne outside One Northside or Voice of the People protesting with his bullhorn will yah?

Nope. Doesn't fit his ideological agenda or the interests he has linked to.

Meanwhile, its the poor who suffer the most...
