Cable outage

Does anyone have any information about the ComCast cable outage in Edgewater? They're probably talking about it on the news, but since there's no cable.... ;-)

  • jenna! love is the law

Did you check your router, Michelle? Try a reset

  • MichelleB in Edgewater New Chicago resident

Jenna - I did try that and then looked on the ComCast website and there is an outage reported. They just don't give any further information and I was on hold 17 minutes with no answer so I was hoping someone else had gotten through. Internet and phone are working fine--just the TV is out. Thanks though!

We have given up on Comcast. RCN is better (so far).

Public Art by Etsy?

Ald. Cappleman says it reflects the "diversity" of the "ward" but I am not seeing it. It is kind of folksy, whimsical, and uses arabic geometry in some of the pieces.

But most of all it seems cheap. The budget was $20,000-30,000 and the city with nary a peep of protest from the Alderman Art-Critique overlooked the local Chicago artists to give the commission to an artist in....Alabama. Talk ois cheap, politicians like Cappleman say they support artists, here was an opportunity lost.

While Argyle station in Osterman's ward got a beautiful glazed ceramic and glass piece by local talent Lynn Basa...we got...

A laser-cut PVC sheet of folksy bugs and stylized plants. PVC the same stuff we use for drains. The work is covered in cheap plexiglass about 3/8th of an inch. It is very prone to scratching, clouding, and breaking off eventually. At the very least it needs more clamp screws please.

The cut-outs are "open work", so is the metal mesh of the stair-wall the art is installed upon. The juxtaposition of these two completely unrelated patterns seems like a lack of foresight. The artist can be forgiven for that she lives in Alabama after all, I am sure the artist never intended for her work to compete with wire mesh..

This is what we get? This is going to be the art that hangs in one of the gateways to the "Entertainment District" which is proposed?

The community needs to have a serious discussion of what we want this "District" to become. For the budget we could have done a LOT better then this. So many artists submitted how did this happen?

*photo and quote below courtesy of Ald. Cappleman's twitter feed.

AlderTweet....."A shout out to the @cta for the new art installation at Lawrence L. All the pieces reflect the diversity of the area."

  • That is the area I was talking about. I like the different perspectives and designs..imho.

Well...that is the project on hold downtown with the planning department. Not everyone is as impressed.

I hope Lowell gets to do his color wheel design, but yea...its on hold buddy with th planning dept.

What do you like about the Lawrence CTA art...besides that its not grafitti?

It is unimpressive and low quality materials. Public art needs to be durable at the very least.

Thoughts on Bad Dog being Gone?

What are the thoughts on Bad Dog Tavern being shuttered?

  • They were always understaffed for lunch on that patio. Only one server for a LOT of tables on weekdays. Also, their kitchen vent clearly hadn't been cleaned for a while and there was a grease stain about 8 feet long along the exterior wall facing the patio. Just gross.

Here we go again...another shooting.

What is going on in Sheridan Park?? It seems Uptown shootings have been moving west of Broadway with more regularity. Another shooting which is perhaps retaliation to the Malden shooting a few days ago. I frequent the area and occasionally see some shady folks but I've never felt uncomfortable. Where are these people coming from?http://www.uptownupdate.com/2015/02/man-shot-on-4700-block-of-beacon.html?m=1

Also...The Non profits running these gang incubators need to fbe forced into some accountability as well.

Its a right lucrative (non) profitable business they are in and their willful deliberate blindness to the problem of gangs finding safe have in their properties like 4650 Malden should no longer be tolerated.

But you won't see Ryne outside One Northside or Voice of the People protesting with his bullhorn will yah?

Notary public

Hi, all. I'm looking for a notary public who can notarize a bank document. I know many banks have notaries, but my bank is a regional one that has no offices here. Are there any banks in the area maybe that would notarize a document for someone who isn't a client? Or other options? Looking for advice. Thanks in advance.

Cappleman is quoting a crime trend for the 14 years of 2001-2015 (for vehicle theft and sexual assaults).

Cappleman has only been in office for 4 of those years 2001-2015.

Question:
Why would he do that? It is deceptive use of facts and fine print.

Question:
Why would he only quote two sub-categories of crime? There are more common cromes which have been happening...like robbery, home invasion and shootings resulting in injury and death. Why no mention?

Please vote for Amy Crawford we deserve better then this.

There is nothing wrong with building up when done right it happens all the time. Gassman cannot do it. A four-figured donation to the alderman is a lot cheaper then doing it right. The alderman said two Sunday's ago business donors give to him because they know he "has their back...: and it shows.

I could type out one by one.....but this one......really stood out to me since I am close to it.

Cappleman said he helped out the Peoples Church/Preston Bradley Center stay open. He took credit for the artists spaces in the PBC.

Complete B.S.

I have one of those studios, I am going to give you some straight up info.

1. Cappleman was dead wrong about "saving" the Peoples Church from that high-rise sprinkler law that never happened. WRONG...the building is exempt. Besides any action he took against the passage of that law would have been a response to the 1000's of resident in older high-rises in Uptown and North Lakeview who raised bloody he**. So no he did not save the building by "defeating" that law along with the rest of the city council.

2. The zoning change...complete B.S. he was a pain in the you know what, he tried to use the simple request to leverage a "good neighbor" agreement that would have meant the church signing over to him some of their rights as a church. Nice guy.

It was just a simple zoning change to allow more entertainment upstairs from the church.

The "aldermanic" delay caused all kinds of needless hassles that led in part to the folding of the Pastime Theater group. Remember that next time he talks about the entertainment district and all of the wonderful things he does.

Uptown with CappleTalker has lost two theater groups (Annoyance, Pastime), and has gained one (Uptown Underground). That would be a net loss of 1 right?

So Cappleman wants to take credit for everything that is fine, cheap politicians do it all the time we should be used to it by now.

He wants to sit up there and squeal in the microphone that he is to be thanked for my studio space? B.S. people....total lie.

Where do people think "medicinal marijuana" money goes now because people who need it still get it, still pay when they can?

It goes into the black market...the gang market....trafficking. Even if your weed dealer is a mellow middle-aged hippie chick...should you follow that lil weed baggie up the distribution chain there are some very very unsavory characters to be found at the wholesale level.

Every dispensary displaces that income from back market to legit market.

Some of the medicinal weed will be picked up by caretakers as the people are gravely ill, they will likely stop for a sandwich now and then who knows....it is foot traffic like anything else. This is an overall positive for the neighborhood and a huge amenity for the terminally ill.

It’s a disgusting practice. It might arguably be justifiable if you have encountered a huge pile of snow, cleared it, and THEN parked your car in it (the true meaning of “sweat equity” misquoted by Rahmbo during the debate) because you have actually created a parking space where none had existed and nobody could have accessed it. (It’s unconscionable in any event to claim it for more than an hour or two). But if your car was there before it snowed, and you simply dug it out so you could drive away, you have done NOTHING constructive. And what really fries me are those SUV drivers who brush the snow off their cars, pull out without digging, and nonetheless put out dib markers. And what if you have to drive to another neighborhood for a good reason, and find no “unreserved” spaces? That is the situation encountered by most “dibs" victims.

The city owns the streets and is the only entity that can dictate who can and can’t park, for how long, and whether they must pay to do so (delegated that authority to the parking meter company). What’s more, you co-own your sidewalk with the city and have a legal obligation to shovel it (an obligation you don’t have on the street side of the curb). But using the “dibbers’” logic, that means you have the right to prevent others from walking on it, or to charge a toll for them to do so---and that is patently ridiculous. This ain’t the Wild West, you can’t stake a claim to public property.

That Trib reporter is stupid and selfish. “Natural law,” my a$$. In Appalachia “natural law” is invoked to justify shooting someone for disrespecting you or insulting a family member--that doesn’t make it right or even lawful. The only reason that court ruled in the dibber’s favor is that the police used excessive force and there isn’t an ordinance prohibiting dibs. All the mayoral candidates and aldermen are cowards in refusing to back such an ordinance--they’re too scared of losing the Neanderthal a-hole libertarian vote!

  • Sandy in EdgeGlen EdgeGlen since 1987

And if you are entitled to reserve a spot simply because you dug your own car out of it, are you also entitled to reserve a spot you vacated when there wasn’t any snow? Of course not--but the logic employed by dibbers would say otherwise.

BTW--it should also be illegal to toss shoveled snow anywhere but one’s own lawn or parkway (aka “tree-lawn”).

This is not unique to Uptown but the way Alderman Cappleman has treated these vulnerable citizens has been unique in a very bad way. Harassment is the only word I have to describe his actions. It is immoral for a public servant to in our name push a policy of dispossession of their meager possessions and constant dislocation to even less comfortable quarters.

Amy Crawford's run for 46th Ward alderman has been a long time coming. A resident of the ward for nearly a decade, she has long been involved in community and advocacy groups supporting childhood education and LGBT rights. In 2008 she took time off from her clerkship with a federal judge to work on Obama's campaign, which she says was an exciting and transformational time that ignited a political fire.

In the time since then she has remained active in her community, practiced law—including LGBT rights pro bono work—and, last January, adopted a baby boy with her wife. That was the real turning point that inspired Crawford to go one step further and run against current 46th Ward alderman James Cappleman.

"Now as a parent, that was also a catalyst for us," she says. "You want to be the kind of person that you'd like to see him become, you'd like to emulate the values you'd like to see him have."

As part of a same sex couple with a biracial child, Crawford sees Uptown as the perfect neighborhood for her family; it's culturally diverse and LGBT friendly. But for it to fully become an idyllic place for her son to grow up she's well aware of the problems she needs to tackle. At the top of her list are issues with neighborhood schools and increased crime.

"I want to be clear about saying that Uptown is generally a safe neighborhood," she says. "But it's just a fact that random violence, particularly gun violence, is really scary for families. We want to make this a neighborhood that is family friendly where people want to move here and also put down roots here."

I'm working on a video story about millennials who have an interest in cooking. I need someone who would be willing to be talked to on camera (possibly in studio) about the subject. Ideally, a millennial who cooks often and feels ver strongly about the topic. Message for more information.

Give them the CappleTreatment, deny them food, don't follow thier lead non sense land. Eventually they give up and we can make EveryBlock a useful forum that serves the needs of the community.

Just hit the bottom when it goes off topic in a nasty manner. As a general rule....if it is something that would be unacceptable to say in a public setting then it should be unacceptable here. Anonymous or otherwise.

Suburbanite in the city!

We are between Hollywood and a Glenwood on Ridge and would love some feedback on the area. We work early hours so are going to the car and walking dogs between 4-5am. We typically walk on Glenwood, Early and Wayne. I'm aware you need to be alert at all times no matter where you are in the city but am just curious about others general vibe with the area. Lease is up soon and we haven't been able to explore like we hoped but love our place.

  • It wasn't about you at all, sorry. For coming from the suburbs, you seem to be very realistic about the area traffic and all. If all the people coming from the burbs were as realistic as u it would be nice. Unfortunally, many suburbanites buy their cheap, crappy condo near a busy street and then want the street to go away. That area is getting a lot safer and nicer. Hope you continue to like the area :-).

  • JMG

    aww ben!

we can't all be rough, tough michelin men like you, maybe you should get out of edgewater before we flaccid suburbanites turn it into schaumburg. you'll be happier anyway, flexing your abs somewhere gritter and more urban, like Logan Sq or uk village.

now I'm going to call Olive Garden & Applebees and and see if we can convince them to open on Clark because what edgewater needs is more diverse dining options.

I'm With Chuy for Mayor

http://m.chicagoreader.com/chicago/jesus-chuy-garcia-rahm-emanuel-chicago-mayor-race-karen-lewis/Content?oid=16255514

I know Chuy, I trust Chuy.

We all deserve to make up our own minds, there will be debates between the candidates, press conferences, and such.

There will be lots of commercials, robot calls, signs, leaflets, campaign swag to "inform us", the more not always the merrier or very qualitative.

The latest issue of The Reader has an article that explains who Chuy is as a person, and who he has been in public life. This article is a good primer for the undecided before the debates start.

There is too much money in political campaigns and not enough real information, this article was not paid for however, it is journalism and we need more of it.

Kids attacking

Have been attacked last yesterday at 5:30, by about 10 kids from 7-12 years old. They wanted to fight, but I didn't fight. Just next to Truman college. Please be aware

I should clarify that I'm not advocating pepper spraying anyone preemptively. I pepper sprayed some kids after I was attacked, pretty bloodied up, and actually lost consciousness for a little bit. So this was a way to end the assault without resorting so some other weapon that would have done more serious damage. I hope that those kids are on a better path by now. If not, they are bound for either prison or the grave and at least it isn't by my hands.

As to charges, the police confirmed that I'd done the right thing and encouraged me to pick up some fresh pepper spray. I'm a big advocate of the stuff. It's saved me from being a victim and/or living with blood on my hands more than once.

I found Cappleman's answers predictably waffling and just plain inaccurate. I asked the first question:

"Why have you done not hing for Clarendon Park in four years when the gym floods after every rain".

It took him two minutes to say nothing can be done until something the former Cuneo Hospital site. A curious collusion if non-facts said in a way only a politician can say it.

Wrong.

The $6Million he is pushing for the "people plaza" in front of the Riviera is from TIF. It is an adjoining TIF district to Clarendon Park which means it can be ported over, in whole or in part.

Cappleman can do it in a day, he has had four years and has done absolutely nothing for the park or the kids who need it. He lied up there at mic.

To Cappleman a benchless plaza with a curious "wheel of fortune" sculpture is more important.

That project is on hold by the planning department downtown, Cappleman forgot to mentiin that.

It is not a plaza but a glorified cul-de-sac at $6......million.

  • FGFM What the Cappleman!

    Cool truncated quote, bro.

There was a dude in an Army jacket by Montrose beach and harbor who used to sell loose joints for a $1 in the early 80's.

But I think he moved on......

I will give CappleCredit to the then future alderman for providing a rare humorous CAPS meeting moment.

Q. Got Wheels A. No

Did anyone else notice a car was relieved of its wheels at Leland and Malden this morning?

Be advised...if you see someone removing all of the tires in a haphazard fashion it may not be a curbside brake job.

  • Littleton Arts Uptown Chicago/Uptown/Artist

I was thinking the same thing is a possibility Capt. Kirk.

    But on the other hand....

Some people for whatever reason put some fancy rims on the plain 'ol cars.

A second point....Toyotas are #1 in car thefts because the parts are so easy to fence.

Either way locking lug nuts are pretty cheap, only have to put one on each wheel. If you get in a flat while out of town in the country the the repair guy will be like "thats why I never live there....".

  • A quick google will show that older Hondas and Toyotas top theft lists in most cities (there are regional differences). Why? They're inexpensive and popular. When entire cars are stolen, they are chopped up and sold for parts to the 1000s of young adults emulating the Vin Diesel movies.

Healthcare

Hi, I am a student journalist.

I'm writing a story on healthcare, specifically on how the Affordable Care Act has made the system more efficient or less efficient (for you). Obama has mandated a streamlined medical health records system using technology.

So, I'm looking specifically for a patient who HAS had difficulty or has NOT had difficulty with needing medical documents transferred from one hospital (for many reasons) to another hospital.

It this applies to you, I'd love to speak with you and share your story.

If your interview is used, it would be published on a Chicago news website.

Please contact me for more information.

Thank you!

The Irish Pirate is arguably my most most reliable online critic in our lovely Uptown. He is mostly on Uptown Update as some may or may not know. Occasionally he ventures out to other platforms but not too much.

I have a tiny sliver of respect for the Celtic Clown because I can tell he has lived here for quite a while, disagree with him on a lot, but this is his neighborhood too and he is entitled to his opinion. As well, and it pains me to admit it, he has good creative writing skills. Undeniable by myself even while being creatively skewered in a public forum of sorts.

The Irish Pirate holds no punches and goes for full effect, at times though he has let it slip, he spoke up for Sarah's Circle years ago when the other UU regulars were whining about it for instance, I remember that.

It is apparent to me that he avoids EB because the troll variety on this page lack such skills or self-control, why be associated and roll with straight up trolls throwing around schoolboy insults it would be senseless diversion. Besides he is in a place where people who like to follow him can find him. EB is all trolled up not EB's fault, not NBC/Comcasts fault it just is.

I don't mind the trolls its a low-level annoyance, somehow we can still share whats going on in the neighborhood, it is just white noise, like traffic commotion outside the window. It will ebb and flow.

If we feed the trolls it will flow, if we ignore the trolls it will slowly ebb. But there will always be trolls.

Please don't feed the trolls, unless you are a troll. Let them feed on one another and lets make this little corner of online Uptown as friendly as we know the offline Uptown is.

Cheers,

Jeffrey Littleton

stopping yellow book drop offs

any one have any idea how to stop getting these phone books? my entire building is on the opt out list for the last 10 years but every year they drop the books in front. i know some people want them, but we don't!

i have called every year to say stop, but it hasn't... any insight would be appreciated.

  • Mei

I feel all these unsolicited mailers should be illegal. If you don't want it and didn't ask for it, they're littering! Their company taglines should be, "Here, you throw this out."

I do use the newspaper adds to line my students' desks when we paint or do something messy, and phone books become paper mache. Also good for drying flowers. However, I will now try opting out. There's never a shortage of paper for student crafts if you pay attention

  • Our package delivery guys and mailman use the phone books to hide our packages. So far (5 years) no thefts.

Every "hacker space" develops its own character and culture,it would be interesting to see what ours would look like in Uptown, we have some talented and creative people with all sorts of skills for sure.

Here is a link to the EveryBlock post which inspired this post:

http://chicago.everyblock.com/announcements/sep16-does-ravenswood-need-a-hacker-space-4265613/#comment-68582

And here is a link to a hacker space on Elston Av. that is up and running:

http://pumpingstationone.org/

The name "hacker space" can be a bit misleading at first sight, at least it was for me as its something I associated with nefarious cyber behaviors. Thankfully it is not.

So please have a look and share any comments and/or ideas about bringing this idea to Uptown.

  • Littleton Artist/Uptown/Chicago

Thanks Seth! I might be free on Tuesday but either way we should talk about it and see what can be done. I would like to see what space within the church you have in mind, would tool use and such be appropriate?

Peoples Church is an awesome building, and great public transportation links. Here is a link to a picture of it...magnificent!

I am going to cut-n-paste this over to the Ravenswood post....

  • I am excited that they just cut two doors into the Broadway side of the facade. That will hopefully transform that side of the building from the long lonely strip of brick and sidewalk it has been for so very many years.
