Davis Campaign Manager Throws Shade At Crawford Campaign Tactics, Endorses Cappleman in Run-Off

In the 46th Ward's aldermanic election last week, candidate (and former chief of staff to Helen Shiller)Denice Davis finished third, while James Cappleman and Amy Crawford will meet in a runoff on April 7th. The day after the election, Ms. Davis' campaign manager, Cortez Duquette, took to Everyblock (and posted on UU's Facebook page) to make several surprising statements, including allegations that:

  • I, personally, would never accept any kind of assistance from a bunch of losers that would sell out their "friend" for any personal gain.

Fake "friends" are scum of the earth, the worst kind of people.

  • Littleton Arts Uptown Chicago/Uptown/Artist

Amy Crawford was actually very respectful to Denice Davis, never attacked her just ran her own campaign.

Where all this drama came from who knows.....ego maybe?

Public Art by Etsy?

Ald. Cappleman says it reflects the "diversity" of the "ward" but I am not seeing it. It is kind of folksy, whimsical, and uses arabic geometry in some of the pieces.

But most of all it seems cheap. The budget was $20,000-30,000 and the city with nary a peep of protest from the Alderman Art-Critique overlooked the local Chicago artists to give the commission to an artist in....Alabama. Talk ois cheap, politicians like Cappleman say they support artists, here was an opportunity lost.

While Argyle station in Osterman's ward got a beautiful glazed ceramic and glass piece by local talent Lynn Basa...we got...

A laser-cut PVC sheet of folksy bugs and stylized plants. PVC the same stuff we use for drains. The work is covered in cheap plexiglass about 3/8th of an inch. It is very prone to scratching, clouding, and breaking off eventually. At the very least it needs more clamp screws please.

The cut-outs are "open work", so is the metal mesh of the stair-wall the art is installed upon. The juxtaposition of these two completely unrelated patterns seems like a lack of foresight. The artist can be forgiven for that she lives in Alabama after all, I am sure the artist never intended for her work to compete with wire mesh..

This is what we get? This is going to be the art that hangs in one of the gateways to the "Entertainment District" which is proposed?

The community needs to have a serious discussion of what we want this "District" to become. For the budget we could have done a LOT better then this. So many artists submitted how did this happen?

*photo and quote below courtesy of Ald. Cappleman's twitter feed.

AlderTweet....."A shout out to the @cta for the new art installation at Lawrence L. All the pieces reflect the diversity of the area."

  • That is the area I was talking about. I like the different perspectives and designs..imho.

  • Littleton Arts Uptown Chicago/Uptown/Artist

Well...that is the project on hold downtown with the planning department. Not everyone is as impressed.

I hope Lowell gets to do his color wheel design, but yea...its on hold buddy with th planning dept.

What do you like about the Lawrence CTA art...besides that its not grafitti?

It is unimpressive and low quality materials. Public art needs to be durable at the very least.

Gentrification

Is gentrification a problem? Is Uptown currently gentrifying? What do you want to see in our neighborhood in the coming years?

Just going to leave this here, optimistically hoping for a civil discussion:

To those of you wondering if I have a point, I do not. I'm genuinely curious what neighbors think of the topic and of the article.

Agreed. But let us not minimize the fight. Shaping Uptown in defiance of the capitalist real estate market has required several generations of struggle, going back to JOIN, Michael James, and many others in the late 60's, Hy Thurman, the Black Panthers, Young Lords, Young Patriots, and many others in the 70's, and continuing straight through today, involving thousands from the grassroots.

Cable outage

Does anyone have any information about the ComCast cable outage in Edgewater? They're probably talking about it on the news, but since there's no cable.... ;-)

Did you check your router, Michelle? Try a reset

Jenna - I did try that and then looked on the ComCast website and there is an outage reported. They just don't give any further information and I was on hold 17 minutes with no answer so I was hoping someone else had gotten through. Internet and phone are working fine--just the TV is out. Thanks though!

Marty’s Martini Bar Anticipated Expansion Canceled

With a die-hard following of cocktail lovers, Marty’s Martini Bar at 1511 W Balmoral Ave. has been filling up glasses with spirits for ten years now. The narrow bar has a charm of its own with a very intimate setting. However, the small space can get very crowded as the ever-growing number of patrons come in to celebrate. Over the last year […]

  • So Sorry to hear about this... we anticipated the expansion and redo. We have often stayed away just because of the uncomfortable atmosphere. Who wants to pay a higher price for a cocktail only to be shoved and bounce around and not able to hear the friends you came in. I think they missed an opportunity to improve the atmosphere and not to chase customers away.

You have the likes of Brendan Shiller actively defending gang members when his mother Helen was doing her best to keep Uptown a ghetto already.

And now you have the Shillers backing Amy Crawford for Alderman.

"Some speculate that Shiller helped Aqueela Ali fend off multiple attempts to have her and her sons evicted from their apartment at 920 West Lakeside Place, where rules prohibit criminal behavior by residents. (Shiller acknowledges she helped Ali with “housing issues.”) While it’s not entirely clear what her role was in Shiller’s political organization, Ali served as a poll watcher, an election judge, and a Shiller campaign worker since at least 2002, campaign records show. Records also show that she gathered petition signatures to get Shiller on the ballot in 2003 and 2007."

    Don't lend them any credibility.

What are the thoughts on Bad Dog Tavern being shuttered?

One of things that will be the downfall of the Cappleman era is that not everyone has a seat at his table. 53.2% and a growing portion of the ward knows that. With some better weather and 6 more weeks of campaigning I think it is not unrealistic to try to push that to 70% to 80%.

In my opinion Denice Davis, her supporters and Cappleman supporters should flock to the Crawford campaign. The whole ward has a seat at the 46th Ward table with Amy Crawford. This is a fact.

Personally I think Cortez was the influence and participant that added to a public perception that the Davis campaign was the mirror version of the Cappleman campaign. I think without him and a different campaign manager she would have had twice the votes.

I could go into great detail with behind scenes stories as Cortez has, but to what gain? Cortez I wish you well in your future endeavors. Anything else is water under the bridge. Zip it while you can is my advice.

Forgetting all this and moving forward: Cappleman is the problem not the constituents of the 46th Ward. Amy Crawford is the only one of the 2 candidates running now who truly believes in representing -all- of the 46th Ward instead of just a segment or campaign donors perspectives. She is listening - get on board and be an influence to have your perspectives and ideas represented... No matter if you supported Cappleman, Davis or Crawford.

There are no intelligent reasons why mansions and condos cannot sit next to market rate rental housing, affordable housing and shelters. There are no intelligent reasons why our ward cannot come up with better solutions for the violence and constituents experiencing homelessness in the streets, the extremities Cappleman cannot intelligently cope with and has no solutions for except to move them somewhere else.

Amy Crawford is the one that has the intelligence and job skills to make better solutions happen for everyone, not Cappleman.

Strange thing is, this has been happening a lot lately--loud booming sounds in the middle of the night. Caused by cold?? Anyone else hearing this? Maybe it's just me. :) Thanks!

Election Drama: Some Area Alderman Have An Easy Win, Others Not So Much
