Rooftop Deck -Permit

Hello,

I'm interested in building a rooftop deck on top of a 3 unit condominium. Can anyone share any tips on the permit/inspection process?

Much appreciated

  • There's no general price, it varies considerably from one situation to another.

  • I just meant ballpark range/price you encountered...realizing it's just one sample...for your particular 3 flat. I realize it varies greatly. If you don't wish to share, totally understand.

Chuy Says NO to the Belmont Flyover!

Calling the proposed Flyover “an unnecessary expenditure of taxpayer funds that will generate little return on investment,” Chuy Garcia expressed his opposition to the Flyover.

Read more, and check out our website at:

A vote for Chuy Garcia is a vote to save Central Lakeview!

  • Lynn Olejniczak Life-long Chicagoan, who loves her city.

It is more than a couple dozen and most Lakeview residents are not for it. But I'm sure that won't stop Tunney's quest for more empty store fronts.

  • I used to live on Wilton Ave....before that block of houses got removed by the CTA.
Do you like the new El station? Sometimes neighborhoods/blocks have to make concessions for the greater good. Don't know much about the flyover...but can share my experience moving from a block that no longer exists (at least on the most of the west side of the street)...life goes on.

I've reviewed the published agendas of both the Zoning and the Housing committees from August 2014 through January 2015 and could find no mention of this address for a zoning change or any other city council or committee action. Because of the election, there will not be any city council meetings or committee meetings in February. There is a Housing committee hearing scheduled for 3/11 10am and two Zoning Committee Hearings next month: 3/12 and 3/17 , both staring at 10am in Council Chambers, before the 10am 3/18 City Council meeting. No agendas for these committee meetings are available yet. Shortly after 3/1 some of the agendas for the March meetings should start to appear. You can check the web site:
https://chicago.legistar.com/Calendar.aspx for any additional committee meeting dates, changes in times/locations, and the meeting agendas. The current or new alderman for the ward may know more about the property before any hearing action. The press coverage about the property are old stories at:

FedEx Southport Out, New Retail Development in at 3524 N. Southport Avenue

FedEx Office, currently located at 3524 N. Southport will be closing to make room for a new 12,000 square foot "Marquee Retail Space" on Southport Avenue. The current building will have a new facade like we currently see at the future Lou & Grey and Corridor Brewery building. The space will either be split in half with 6,000 square feet of retail, or combined as one giant 12,000 square foot retail space (much like Anthropologie, including a double-barrel truss roof).

Summer Options for 6 year old child

I'm looking for daycare options for my 6 year old for this upcoming summer. I work from 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday. The Neighborhood Boys & Girls Club doesn't start until 8 am but I have to be at work by 8 am. I need to pick up as late as 6 pm on some days. Any suggestions/recommendations for high quality group childcare for a 6 year old in the area? Looking for entire summer, not just short summer camps. Thank you!

On Friday February 20, 2015, the Chicago Zoning Board of Appeals listened to more than 5 hours of sworn testimony and evaluated piles of documents, exhibits, and arguments in favor or in opposition to the issuance of a Special Use Zoning permit to locate a medical marijuana dispensary at 2843 N. Halsted.

Rules of evidence applied. Both sides were represented by skilled counsel. Indeed MedMar had numerous attorneys.

All together there were about 30 witnesses, most of whom were skilled professionals, including many the Board recognized as highly trained experts. Everyone who attended had an opportunity to speak. The MedMar case started at 3:15PM and ended at 8:25PM.

The Zoning Board of Appeals voted 4-0 to deny the Special Use Zoning application at the 2843 N. Halsted location.

Since MedMar won a State license to dispense medical marijuana, it’s believed they now need to find a more appropriate location within the limits of Lake View Township [approx. North Avenue north to Devon; Lake Michigan west to Western].

MedMar has the right, should they want to stay with the 2843 N. Halsted site, to file a request for administrative review [appeal] in the Chancery Court of Cook County.

Yesterday they tore down the old Alley building to make way for a proposed 80 unit development. These images are where the iconic Alley mural once was.

I first went to The Alley as a 20 year old kid; unsure of herself but bound to become otherwise. I bought a $99 leather biker jacket that I think they were running a sale on so I could afford it. It was heavier than hell.

I still have that jacket; and every button, scuff, and scratch on it represents the journey I took from there to here. It is a prized possession.

As my daughter navigates her road of discovery, I still go to The Alley to get her funky socks, leopard patterened shoes, and fingerless gloves (her favorite). I want her to know that she has room to be different, independent, and creative as she practices kindness, respect, and humility.

The mural being destroyed leaves me sad.

Do you have a fond memory of The Alley? Something that you look back on and smile?

  • Never yet been kicked off a thread, but thanks for the well wishes. We're going off-topic here though.

Public Hearing on Monday, March 9 for Rise and Galleria Liquors Mixed-Use Redevelopment

A public hearing has been scheduled for the proposed mixed-use transit oriented development for 3401-09 N. Southport Avenue on Monday, March 9 at 7:00 PM at Mystic Celt.

The following is now known:
A 4-story building with retail on the first floor
33 apartments with starting rent at $1,500
6 parking spaces with one being a handicapped spot

The project will be presented by the developer to all that attend the West Lakeview Neighbors meeting. See the renderings here:

http://southportcorridorchicago.blogspot.com/2015/01/public-hearing-march-9-2015-for.html

  • Good research on the tax records/ownership JJ. Like I said...connected to Tunney. Also B3-3 doesn't allow 33 units for that land square footage. But don't worry they will tweak the zoning "system" to make it work...for them~

  • Hank, how do you see "connected to Tunney"? Help everyone open their eyes, if there's something to see here.

I think that even if the route, location or day/start time of the parade are not changed, the parade length may be changed. Better control of the large gaps in the parade, which were not solved by eliminating the sharp "V" at the Halsted/Broadway intersection of the old route with the new more linear north to south parade route. UI think that the 2014 parade had something like 250 separate entries. The parade organizers may want it down to 200 or so. perhaps have government officials walk or ride in cars side by side , rather than single file. The more combining of organization entries, to take up more of the width of the street, like the marchers for the gay-friendly churches, Placing social services together, one marching on one side of the street and another on the other side could shorten the parade time without reducing the number of parade entries much. The musical floats/buses/marching bands, will need to be kept separated so as to not compete much., but the streets are large enough for side-by-side marching units, if not cars.

4 copters hovering over E Lakeview 1/31/15

Any info?

  • Oh dear; I was just being hyperbolic for amusement's (and alliteration's) sake. Or trying unsuccessfullly to be at any rate. The Belmont Redline station seems to be ground zero for much of the crime that's so ably reported by the Crime in Wrigleyville & Boystown blog (CWB). New Restaurant?

I just walked by the Town Hall apartments on Halsted and Addison and noticed what appears to be a new restaurant getting ready to open up in one of the retail spots for that building. Does anyone know if this is actually a new restaurant and if so what the scoop on it is, or is it perhaps some facility that is there for the tenants of the building? It seems to look like to me it may be a restaurant because it also has bar seating and the decor of the place as well.

  • Gregory Morrow Employee at Center On Halsted

Hi! That facility is part of the Center on Halsted's new Senior Center complex. That space will be used to serve senior lunches or for other senior events. The lunch program is administered as part of the City of Chicago's Golden Diner senior lunch program. The old police station itself will soon be open as part of the Senior Center, it's going to be very nice!

Addenda: the Senior Lunch program at Town Hall is not just for building residents, it is for all neighborhood seniors 60 and up. There is another Senior Lunch served at the Presbyterian church down the street, at Addison and Broadway.

I cant speak for the other stations. I dont think we are. We dont have access to the legal tools to find out what people are really concerned about. Mainly if the owner of the building is the owner and installer of the recording equipment. And if the owner of the building has anymore recording equipment in use in any illegal way. That would require warrants for search. Police have to do their due diligence and burn some good old fashion shoe leather.

Dome At Blaine School?

Has anyone else heard about an inflatable dome being erected in the Blaine field? My understanding is that it will be used for private events after school hours and on weekends... which would eliminate public use of one of the few open spaces in the Southport area. Bad idea -- hope it isn't true.

  • MTH

I'm very interested to see where this goes. If it provides the over-crowded school with more usable space during the winter, I'd be all for it even as someone who regularly uses the field and lives across the street.

Powells Bookstore on Lincoln

Demolition has started on the 2800 block of N. Lincoln Ave. Does anyone know what's going on with this block? Powells bookstore, dry cleaners, and muskies are all available for new business/construction. This could be a great opportunity to add to the new businesses that have popped up in the last year on this block, Beermiscuous, Popcorn Asylum, Gyros on the Spit....

Recurring Snowblowing Annoyances

Lately, I dread each snowfall because I know it means the return of the snowblowing fools in the 2800 block of N. Orchard. To give some background, snowblowing in this block typically occurs between the hours of 12am and 4am, so no, not even remotely a "normal" time to use a very loud machine. My guess is that it's a service used and they come at whatever time they feel like, then plow the entire dang block at these odd...

Lately, I dread each snowfall because I know it means the return of the snowblowing fools in the 2800 block of N. Orchard. To give some background, snowblowing in this block typically occurs between the hours of 12am and 4am, so no, not even remotely a "normal" time to use a very loud machine. My guess is that it's a service used and they come at whatever time they feel like, then plow the entire dang block at these odd hours. It's not even the sidewalk, it's the garage areas behind the houses, so it usually takes a while. I'm a heavy sleeper, and it continually wakes me up and keeps me up because it goes on for an hour or more. Last night at 4:15am, I finally had it and called 311 and was transferred to 911. They sent a car out. I feel bad "wasting" our 19th district resources for something so trivial, but this is ridiculous! I'd like to believe that no normal person says "yes, 3am is an awesome time fire this puppy up to clean an inch of snow that my car is going to drive over!" Has anyone had similar experiences? Aside from wearing earplugs and filing noise complaints, any suggestions on how to handle?

  • Macsurak - good for you for the excellent post.
Its so annoying that, invariably, if someone posts anything in the nature of a complaint they will get the SCOLD response.

Its so annoying that, invariably, if someone posts anything in the nature of a complaint they will get the SCOLD response.
For example, if you are complaining about "X" - within one or two posts - you will get the very tiresome "if you don't like it Why don't YOU do something (instead of posting here!) ! it never fails there will always be one person who just has to insert that comment.
The whole purpose of EB is to chew things over as neighbors, its our "back fence" - "did you hear this?" "Did you see that?" "What do you think about this?" not beat each other or up attack each other just for bringing a subject up. Why the hostility?

  • Why the hostility?

My guess is that CHPO25 is the one running the snow blowers! : )

But really, Becky G and Maksurak are correct. This is a good forum and I agree with you that we are discussing neighborhood things and there is no reason to get defensive or hostile.

However, I am aware that some folks enjoy stirring the pot or playing devils' advocate. I guess it makes things interesting.

    Cheers, all.

Lost Dog

Lost dog! He went missing from Rogers Park but just in case please keep an eye out for him. He is easily spooked so please don't try to chase him.

  • Oh, I am so happy. It was much too cold for him to be out tonight wearing only four white socks. :)

Dojo Chicago

I have been living in this area for three years now and have not been able to find a gym where people actually want to get fit and care about being healthy, most clubs seem to have more social aspects. Dojo is a small gym with a very personal approach and they offer all women's classes. So happy to have found this place, def a great addition to the neighborhood!

  • Jen K 22-year Lakeview resident

Chicago North Sider: When you put quotes around the three words, Google searches for that exact phrase, which would explain why you couldn't find anything in your search. Try dropping the quotes and the word Gym and the place the OP referenced is the first search result.

I love this gym / dojo because that's all it is and nothing more. Check them out. http://www.chicagofitnesscenter.com/#/home
