Slick move by Pritzker and Moore on Rogers Park Plaza

I knew it was coming any day. The plans were there but the rich and powerful were waiting until the election was over. That's how the 1% and the politicians they have in their pocket work.

Five Stages of Loss and Grief

It would seem that one of our Rogers Park neighbors is dealing with the first of the typical five stages of loss and grief. It is well accepted that these five stages are:

1. Denial
2. Anger
3. Bargaining
4. Depression
5. Acceptance

It is quite normal to be locked into denial for a while and I suppose this accounts for some recent posts. Let us see how long it takes to get to acceptance!

Making whine with sour grapes

After a defeat, Most politicians try and send a message to their supporters that they should try to work with their opponent for the betterment of all. And then there is Don Gordon's message -

"The residents of Rogers Park who put Alderman Moore back in the council for another 4 years simply don't get it or prefer stick their collective heads in the sand..."
https://www.facebook.com/groups/Gordon2015/permalink/780917585317984/

Well, at least he isn't trying to disenfranchise half of the ward this time... he's just insulting 66% of them.

Way to move the neighborhood forward Don!

  • FGFM What the Cappleman!

66% with a low turnout is still pretty good. Gordon would have needed 58% of the non-voting registered voters to break even with 100% turnout.

Good-bye, MorWay

All but one business in the strip mall at Morse and Wayne has closed shop for good. Word on the street is Jennifer Pritzker bought it. The lone holdout is Vic's Pharmacy, who has allegedly gone to court - and was granted to stay until May 2015.

One can only speculate as to how big of a parking garage will be built in it's place?

One can also speculate as to how long it will be before Ms. Pritzker buy's out JB's Pizza?

At the time of this post Alderman Moore had to have had the same info I had - and he kept quiet about it.

RP Election Ennui

Yesterday's election numbers are interesting. Terrible turn-out overall throughout the City. The cold probably had something to do with it, but I think it was also a sense that people just aren't very supportive of the candidates who are/were running. I do believe that if "none of the above" was an option in the mayoral race, that would have garnered more than 50%!!

I do believe that if "none of the above" was an option in the mayoral race, that would have garnered more than 50%!!

Anyhow, in our Ward, here are the numbers:

1) We have 25,105 registered voters.
2) 8,380 voted yesterday (33.38%).
3) 5,566 voted for Joe (giving him 66.42% of the vote), but only 22.17% of registered voters bothered to vote for him.
4) 2,814 voted for Don (giving him 33.58% of the vote), but only 11.21% of registered voters bothered voting for him.

So, what does RP want in an alderman? Let's describe the experience and qualities we seek in an alderman in this Ward. (Let's try REALLY hard NOT to use this as a chance to bash Joe and/or Don, but instead, design our ideal candidate!)

I'll start the list with the following:
1) Someone willing to lead by talking about the seriousness of the fiscal problems facing the City and that none of the ways to address them will be pleasant (think chemo).
2) Someone who prioritizes education based on what is good for the kids and not what is good for the adults.

Let's keep the list going!!

  • Suzanne - thank you for the insightful analysis of a complex problem I am only peripherally familiar with!

Carl - you make some very good points about attributing responsibility for the current situation. However, one can make the fundamental argument that everything that is done by elected politicians is the responsibility of voters who elected them, right?

I hope this thread continues on a courteous and non-tangential trajectory, and that it will not be allowed to degenerate into useless side discussions replete with bullying ("we know exactly what you mean"...).

I am NOT blaming teachers for taking what was negotiated on their behalf. I am blaming union leaders who were as complicit as the politicians in telling a grand lie. The union leaders also agreed to the pension holidays, so... The reality is that both thought, "Who cares. I won't be around when the s**t gets too deep!"

But we can't keep looking at the past. We are where we are. To move beyond, we need to take drastic measures. Instead, union leaders rile up their membership and go to Court over reforms based on a constitutional amendment that was put in place exactly because the union leaders never did trust the promises of the politicians.

In Chicago alone, we have a $29 billion pension deficit for 92,617 active employees and 66,741 retirees (using 2012 data.) That's a total of 159,358 people. We need to reform the system and structure payments to put the pension system in wind-down mode and transfer workers to a defined contribution plan. That's the only way to stem the bleeding and make sure that the 67,000 current retirees aren't eating cat food for the remainder of their lives.

Anyone see the person who hit my car?

Hi all, I really hate posting negative things, but this morning we went out to our car parked on Lunt near one of the fire hydrants (legally) and next to an alley to find that someone had slammed into our front driver side bumper and cracked it significantly. They must have it it pretty hard to crack it (a piece was missing), and of course no note was left. We use our car for our catering jobs and having it damaged like that does not look good. If anyone has any information, or saw anything (or if you are the one who hit us...no questions asked, just please come forward), I would really appreciate it!

  • Total sympathy with you. Someone sideswiped my car on Fargo Wednesday night. They only took off my side view mirror, and I'm swallowing the price to replace it. We all know that it was snowing and slippery.... but jeez! (I'm in line for a paid off street parking spot, and it cannot come soon enough!)

I just learned the word is out from Springfield that massive budget cuts proposed by IL's new guv will severely impact social services (always conservatives' favorite target). This worries me from a general standpoint as an IL resident, but also from a personal one because my young adult son is disabled and he's housed in a special facility in the suburbs to provide a long-term supportive living environment for the disabled. If these budget cuts are approved, we've learned the program that funds our son's living and work facilities will lose over $800K from its operating budget.

We are pretty freaked. These programs and others like them around the State are absolutely essential to the population they serve, and yet they have suffered continual, deep budget cuts throughout the years. They are struggling to meet the many expenses of providing their services as it is. If they lose this money, we have no idea how they can stay open. If they close, where will its fragile and vulnerable population go? There must be a better way to balance IL's budget than robbing disadvantaged people.

The only chance is to put enough pressure on the State reps to veto Mr. Rauner's proposal. Anyone who could write letters of protest to their elected officials, we would be so grateful. Also, can anyone tell me to whom shall we address our letters? Who are the ones that serve our community? Thanks!

It's human, I guess, to be disapproving or disgruntled even but not take any action to do anything. I know because I've done that myself. I can't afford to do that now!

There is a huge difference between what the Governor has identified and what will actually take effect. As you all know, whatever the Governor proposes has to make its way through the Illinois Legislature and the Governor does not have the juice in the legislature to get passage on many of those proposals.

One can only hope the Governor has some good reading material to fill the hours over the next four years!

Don Gordon is a good man, and most importantly, he is a true independent and he has run his campaign without "Joenation$". That's right, no donations.
And that means no favors asked or granted.

I'm sure Donut-Joe has a few good qualities. But he is a long time pontificator who likes to feed voters on Election Day. We don't need that. We need a community activist who wants safe streets, good streets and less pot holes. We need an Alderman on the City Council who isn't in the mayor's back pocket. We want and need an honest man who doesn't owe developers and Mayors. We need term limits and that is spelled GORDON.

NO MORE JOE!

Elections are about accountability. They are an opportunity for the voters to hold their elected officials' feet to the fire. I appreciated the opportunity to defend my record and offer my vision for the future of our wonderful neighborhood. As I said throughout the campaign, our neighborhood is stronger working together, and though we may occasionally disagree on the means to achieve our goal for a better Rogers Park, we should never let those disagreements become personal and irreconcilable.

I congratulate Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Cook County Commissioner Jesus "Chuy" Garcia on making it to the second round in the mayoral election. The 49th Ward voters were split down the middle between Mayor Emanuel and Commissioner Garcia, with each receiving 44% of the vote in the ward.

Whomever is elected Mayor in April will lead a city faced with monumental challenges for which there are no easy solutions. The two candidates must avoid platitudes and level with the voters about the painful choices that must be made. Our city is also stronger working together, and I will work with whomever is the next Mayor to take on these challenges and make sure that Chicago becomes a city that works for everyone.

After taking the day off today, my staff and I will be back tomorrow working tirelessly for you and the neighborhood and city we love.

Thank you for honoring me with another four years.

Hello neighbors - I'm interested in opening and sharing a co-working space. There'd be space for private offices and common office space. Any interest from local professionals?

  • Al I. Not Defender of Cartoon Cows

There was one last year on Morse, it came and went pretty quickly. It's possible to perhaps put some of the blame for failure on the operators, but truly, I think the need just wasn't there. The few times I used it, I tended to be the only person there.

I probably wouldn't utilize a new coworking space if one appeared.

  • The Bezazian Branch Library in Uptown (1226 W. Ainslie) will be opening a small co-working space called The Shift in the next few weeks. Call 312-744-0019 got more info.

  • Edgewater Nora Agrees with Pink. Founder, Arka Pana Consulting.

The Shift is not associated with the Library. I like working out of there, you can find there website here: http://www.theshiftchicago.com/

I've heard rumors about a co-working space opening up in Edgewater near Broadway and Bryn Mawr.

Al, can you elaborate on the co-working space that was on Morse? What did you like/not like about it?

Excitement in the 43rd

Congratulations to Caroline Vickrey, a West Ridge native, on her work to bring Michele Smith to a runoff! Throughout the city change is desperately needed and Lincoln Park is no exception. The hard work didn't stop on Tuesday though and I have faith that the 43rd Ward will get the alderman they deserve!

The Bickersons Love Election Day

This morning on the CTA, during the long Red Line stretch between North & Clybourn and Clark & Division, the charismatic train operator told us to have a beautiful day and to celebrate our democracy by making our vote count. I love voting day. I think most of us do. 95% of poll-workers are people who believe in public service--our neighbors, retirees, civics nerds. It's so easy to get caught up in the bickering (before my coffee I made some snide comments on EB about Don Gordon's yellow protest bus--sorry) about how every bureaucratic inefficiency is a Stalinist conspiracy and that the fix is in--but the buzz in the city, around the office, in church basements and school gyms, is exciting.

That's what's so great about the ward system: it's a chance to hash out our future and litigate our present. The choices are never perfect, and neither are the candidates. One person's "dirty, filthy corruption" is another's "responsive government." So while you may see some shenanigans here and there, or something that's hopelessly broken, remember that, by and large, that poll worker struggling to find your address or forgetting to check your documents in triplicate probably isn't in-the-tank-for-Joe-Moore or Rahm Emanuel or Don Gordon or Willie Wilson; s/he's probably been up since 4:45 and does this two or three times a year.

At the end of the day, scream and holler, celebrate! Mourn Rahm winning, or caution everyone else that Chuy's runoff isn't really a victory, grumble to yourself that Joe Moore is here for another four years. But don't look for a vast machine conspiracy around every corner or be foul to poll workers/election judges. The fact is, most of the people working elections are far too incompetent to execute a conspiracy. They're just dumb ol' people like you and me.

Good post, ptgrp. I would make just one small correction. Speaking of poll workers, you write "...s/he's probably been up since 4:45..." Election judges are supposed to report to their polling places by 5 AM so everyone working a full day, including poll watchers, are up well before 4:45.

Agree with your post, ptgrp - especially appreciate your sharing "celebrate democracy by making our vote count." Regretfully, I must toss a fly in the ointment of your well-intended post. Agree with your post, ptgrp - especially appreciate your sharing "celebrate democracy by making our vote count." Regretfully, I must toss a fly in the ointment of your well-intended post. Looking through the lens of a woman whose franchise is less than 100 years old with high cost to suffragists, having witnessed the civil rights violations in the deep south in the 1960's, and witnessing current efforts of states to restrict the voting process, I am not convinced that most humans involved in the democratic process are well meaning, benign, educated, civic minded, or are conscious of the consequences of their actions. I speak from personal experience at the 40th ward poll site yesterday where the election judge insisted twice that I needed to show an ID to be given a ballot - even after I told him his challenge was illegal. This man was young enough to be my grandson - but there were 4 other election judges - all older women - who did not correct him. Humiliated, I relented after the 3rd refusal and dug into my wallet for ID because I was fatigued from working long hours on deadline and I needed to return to work. In retrospect, I should have given him my name, but I, too, had been up since 5 AM working. If I had been elderly or in a wheel chair needing to re-navigate the icy sidewalk to the poll site, I could have lost my franchise. So I called the Chicago Board of Elections to register a complaint. The person on the phone offered all of the human factors for this error and was happy that I reported this, as indeed this judge's process was in error and he illegally challenged my right to vote. Seems several polling sites in Chicago had this complaint - much confusion about this ID issue. Our civic duty is not over when we vote. Being vigilant about our voting rights and the process and systems that support them is not to be naively or lightly taken. It should not have such a high hassle factor.

Lincoln Towing Scam

A friend parked his car at Winston Towers #3 guest parking lot last night around 8:30. A guest pass was taped to the front window. This morning his car was gone, towed by Lincoln. He had to pay $218 to get it back. His MP3 player and I-Pass and other property were untouched. One wheel was damaged, and part of the pass was left where he'd taped it.

When he filed the police report he was told that the same thing happened two days before to a woman in a private lot at Sheridan and Pratt.

Be careful out there. It appears Lincoln is still up to its old tricks.

What do you think could have damaged that tire?

  • Paco 50thWardFollies.com

No, he arrived later. The 6 a.m. was on the tow slip.

  • Herecomestheman Character assassin.

So your friend arrives after 6 and finds his car towed?I guess he should have followed the rules and moved it by 6. Pay up.

Heads up! IDT-ComEd door-to-door solicitors at Ridge & Chase

Tonight (Feb 25) two men identifying themselves as being with "IDT-ComEd" somehow got into our building and tried knocking on doors about electricity rates. They had laminated paper IDs on lanyards, and 3-ring binders with lots of sheets for names, addresses, etc. to be filled in. We told them the building did not allow solicitors/canvassers of any kind and that they had to leave the property immediately.

They left without argument and headed north on Ridge.

IDT is NOT a part of ComEd, or affiliated with ComEd. Just another ultily scam.

  • jenna! love is the law

    just say NO!

  • These people rang my unit and told them I was not interested. A minute later they knocked on my door. ComEd don't do this. Be careful who you let in your building.

No really! And it went downhill from there. You think I'm kidding? I have never heard anyone pack so many instances of "mofo" and "nig-ger" into two minutes of dialogue in my life, I know. I must have led a sheltered life.

Congrats to Joe Moore

After a rancorous EveryBlock campaign, it turns out that two-thirds of 49th Ward voters like the direction where we're headed under the leadership of Alderman Joe Moore.

Seriously, that quite the mandate.

Congrats to Joe, and here's to four more years of ward improvements.

  • Bruce Mayberry, Roger Parkansas

    Congrats Alderman Moore!

Peggy "Maggie" Wolfe just can't stop snarling after losing a democratically run election. Her candidate lost plain and simple. He is an experienced and professional loser. Peggy just give it a break and please stop snarling.
