CBS 2, NBC 5, ABC 7, WGN 9, Fox 32, WTTW, And Chicago Defender: We can prove racist comments on E.B.

We ask that the news media sift through all public comments posted on E.B. which will prove a racist culture exist and we can prove that the Alderman who regularly post on e.b. never challenges the racist banter and that those who post racist statements against blacks are always nice when posting comments to/for 49th Ward Alderman Joe Moore and that the Alderman does correspond back with those who have posted racist comments on e.b.

It's a Follow Me on Friday twofer! This Friday evening, I will be hanging out at two businesses that just opened next door to each other--Pita Pit and BMO Harris Bank. They are occupying two of the three storefronts in Loyola University's new apartment building, located just steps from the Loyola Red Line station.

Join me this Friday, March 27th, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at 6556-58 N. Sheridan. Grab a complimentary pita at Pita Pit and check out the fun, casual atmosphere at the chain's newest restaurant. Then head next door and enjoy some beer, wine and soft drinks courtesy of BMO Harris while exploring the bank's "smart" new features.

Pita Pit's manager, Manny Valdes (left), will make sure you are well taken care of with made-to-order pitas. It's a fresh, healthy alternative to fast food, which explains Pita Pit's motto: "fresh thinking, healthy eating."

At Pita Pit you will find more combinations of meats, veggies, cheeses and sauces than anywhere else. Manny claims Pita Pit offers "over a trillion possible pita combinations." Though that may be a tiny bit of an exaggeration, there's no question that Pita Pit's selection of ingredients is quite enormous.

After enjoying your pita, head next door for some drinks at the new BMO Harris Smart Branch (see photo below), where branch manager Jose Garcia will show you the bank's Mobile Cash system, a new technology that allows consumers to video chat with bank tellers and withdraw money from an ATM using their smartphone.

The card-less ATMs allow customers to prepare a transition before arriving to the bank. Users enter the amount they want withdrawn in the BMO Harris app, and then hold up the given QR code to the smartphone reader at the ATM to receive their funds. The transaction takes about 15 seconds, roughly a third of the time it takes for a card withdrawal.

Come see for yourself this amazing new technology.

Tomorrow is your last chance to provide your comments and suggestions on the proposed neighborhood improvement projects that will be put to a vote of the entire 49th Ward community in April.

Join us for a Project Expo TOMORROW (Saturday, March 28th), 10:00 a.m., at the Willye White Park Fieldhouse, 1610 W. Howard (at Ashland). Free parking is available in the lot just north of the fieldhouse.

This is the next step in my "Participatory Budgeting" process that gives 49th Ward residents the power to decide directly how to spend the Ward's $1 million of the ward's "menu money"--discretionary funds received annually by each Chicago alderman for infrastructure improvements in their wards.

You will hear from five volunteer committees about projects they're proposing to be placed on the election ballot on Saturday, April 25th. You'll then have an opportunity to offer your feedback and suggestions on the proposed ideas.

For more information about participatory budgeting and how the process works in the 49th Ward, visit the Participatory Budgeting page on my web site:

http://www.ward49.com/participatory-budgeting/

The 49th Ward Participatory Budgeting Leadership Committee, the Community Representatives and I look forward to hearing your input tomorrow.

  • Joe Moore Alderman, 49th Ward

Mark your calendar for the upcoming 49th Ward Participatory Budgeting Election Day. Vote for your favorite 49th Ward infrastructure projects at the Voting Assembly, Saturday, April 25th, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at the Chicago Math and Science Academy, 7212 N. Clark St. (just south of the firehouse).

Is this just some sort of purgatory where insane people argue about politics?

I don't get it. It's the same argument over and over and over and...well you get it. How about using this site to find out about local happenings and lost pets and stuff? Why does every post end up in some argument about the alderman or the mayor? I seen a couple good arguments that were productive but the majority is just a bunch of insane and repetitive drivel. Shocking Video Shows Road Rage Battle on Chicago Street

This incident occurred on Morse Ave near IMoveChicago.
http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20150325/rogers-park/shocking-video-shows-road-rage-battle-on-rogers-park-street
ROGERS PARK — With a nearby surveillance camera recording it all, two feuding drivers launched into a violent and extended battle on a Rogers Park street last week, with one driver repeatedly ramming the other's car while the second man delivered wild jump kicks and punches, according to police and the video.

For more than six minutes, the drivers went at it as bystanders — including a young girl on a scooter — looked on, according to the video obtained by DNAinfo Chicago. (more at link)

d3, you are making too many assumptions about this case. What if the Audi sped right off after the accident, basically ignoring it, weaving in and out of traffic on that stretch of Sheridan? It's not very easy to catch up with a fast driver there and Camry was obviously trailing a bit if he was 1 car behind him on Morse. What if the Camry
driver didn't have his phone on him? Not everyone has a cell out and ready to take pics when they are driving.

And then you suggest that the driver should've gotten out of his car to survey the damage? Well if the Audi sped off after the crash, which seems obvious in this case, without the Camry driver getting the license plate #, there goes the $500 deductible you care so much about.

And getting out of your car to take pics of the Audi in an effort to show that you are publicly documenting the accident? You must understand how ridiculous that sounds. The Audi would be at least 3 blocks away by the time you get out of the car and whip out your phone unless they have to stop at a red light.

This part of Sheridan can move very fast if there are no red lights. Using your phone to take pictures and calling 911 while driving there would be very dangerous. I'm standing firm in agreement with what the Camry driver did up until he turned on Morse, which is where he should've either called 911, peacefully confronted the driver or gotten the license plate #.

  • Helen NoH North of Howard for 50 + years

I think it's fairly clear from the video that the driver of the Audi was not conducive to being confronted--peacefully or any other way. BTW, the video has apparently been taken down.

FORBES magazine: Chicago’s elite’s line-their-pockets with taxpayer money

"As the city approaches financial bankruptcy, Chicago’s elite’s line-their-pockets with taxpayer money." -- This is not from an alternative weekly, but from FORBES, a national business magazine, that came out with a scathing article today about the new heights of pay-to-play under Mayor Rahm Emanuel. It's full of examples and links to source materials, and should give all the cynics and Rahm-supporters out there some pause when they consider who to vote for.

Do TIFs Rob Our Schools and Enrich Downtown Developers?

Tax Increment Financing (or "TIF") is the favorite target of many commentators and aspiring politicians. Good morning neighbors,

So far, (thankfully) no injuries have been reported.

My whole family was abruptly awoken by the shots, which were very close to our building (we live right by one of the entrances to Warren Park). We did not see anything suspicious, but more than eight shots were clearly heard.

About eight minutes later, we saw police cars patrolling the area.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I have lived in the same place for more than seven years and this is the first time that we have noticed an increase in such activity/occurrences.

I have attended past CAPS meetings and while the police do encourage for positive loitering group formation and community patrolling, only so much can be done when half of the neighborhood's residents are sound asleep.

I know many fellow neighbors begin their work day as early as 4:00 AM and I would hate to think that one of them gets hurt while these unnecessary acts of violence are taking place right outside our homes.

Has anyone else heard/seen anything suspicious during these past few weeks?

I am definitely attending the next CAPS meeting to find out what exactly is going on (hopefully police have some idea).

The Howard Street Theatre Focus Group met on March 17 to discuss the steps needed to create a theater/performing arts space in the City of Evanston-owned properties in the 700 block of Howard Street in Evanston. The group convened at Peckish Pig, a restaurant and brewery located at 623 Howard St. in Evanston.
Focus group participants discussed the many strengths of the location, including excellent access to public transit; the opening in 2008 of a 221-unit apartment building just to the east; an award-winning restaurant and award-winning cocktail lounge just down the block; the increased vibrancy of the street; and its close proximity to Chicago.
Participants evaluated the properties available for theater use (717, 721-723 and 727-729 Howard St.), reviewed previous renderings and concepts for a theater on that block, and discussed the steps required to find a theatre company or companies that would thrive in this location.
Other issues addressed were who would manage and operate the space; the number of seats and their configuration; if an additional location should be considered for a cabaret to allow for comedy club and intimate live musical performances; and the timing to build the space and solicit users.
The group reported that the next steps will be as follows: clearly articulate the vision for Howard Street and the arts; convene a meeting with a group of theatres that might be interested in the space; go forth with a plan for the space to get funding; narrow down the list of people who can participate; and select a theatre group to enter a long-term lease from the City. I'm mildly surprised that this anonymous website is getting traction with its misrepresentations and cherry picked supporting "resources."

I've noted it before when I saw this webpage cited on another EB thread. As just one glaring example of its virtual uselessness, the webpage lists a bullet point stating that "[f]acing budget crisis, spends $2.7 million on armor for horses for a NATO summit" and, in support, cites to a Huff Post screed that states "[t]he city plans to outfit all 30 horses in the CPD's mounted unit, in excess of their annual $2.7 million budget." All other credible and better written articles (suspiciously but predictably omitted by the website) correctly note that "[t]he mounted unit has 30 horses, 30 officers and an annual budget of nearly $2.7 million." This is just one example of how this ridiculously biased webpage cherry picks its "evidence" by selectively citing to incorrect information or exploiting poor editing as it did in the Huff Post article noted above.

I hope people don't take it at face value given how misleading and obviously biased it is but use it as a starting point for people to do their own research into the facts. In an election that is so important, I would hope there would be enough real issues to debate rather than made up ones motivated by something other than spurring an honest, factual debate.

Governor Rauner Takes an Axe to Chicago Public Transit Funding

This is one of the consequences of electing a governor who rides in chauffeured limousines and has no sense of how ordinary people get to work. Yes, there's a pension crisis, but do you really address a crisis by decimating transit systems that are already significantly underfunded? By significantly increasing the number of cars on our crowded highways? By forcing low-income commuters to pay much higher transit costs? By potentially preventing some workers from getting to their jobs at all? Do you cure a cancer by reducing blood flow to the limbs?

Rauner plans to cut CTA funding by 45%, Metra funding by 60% and PACE funding by 41%:

Hello all, my father owns a 2 flat home, non metered account. His last bill was charged over $900 for 6 months. Does this sound about right?? (2 floors, $490 for water, $480 for sewer usage). We are trying to figure out what other homeowners are paying for 2 flat or 2 floor 25' homes. We are considering installing a meter, and most likely will

I am the treasurer for a three unit walk up condo building in Edgewater/Andersonville. For comparison sake, our three units combined yield a bimonthly (every two months) water bill averaging about $150. Your bill sounds very high. And will undoubtedly get higher after the election season (regardless of who is elected). Welcome to the city of Chicago!

  • T&K

I called the water department. I was told I have a leaky toilet or faucet, and that it was recorded by the meter reader last September. I was never informed. The water department has a way of determining leaks, but no process in place to inform the owner of the finding. At least now I know and can do something about it. Thank you, neighbors!

“Corrupt Illinois: Patronage, Cronyism, And Criminality”

Following up on the Forbes article thread…

Last night I did a search on the terms "Illinois" and "corruption" and stumbled on a new book that was released in January, 2015. The title, “Corrupt Illinois: Patronage, Cronyism, And Criminality” by Thomas J. Gradel and Dick Simpson. The book details the roots of political corruption in Illinois. The authors name names and discuss in detail acts of corruption and sleaze by our elected officials. The authors also identify the strategies and...

The authors also identify the strategies and methods employed by our elected officials to rip us off. The authors make a number of recommendations for cleaning up politics in Illinois. However, the only way we will clean up the mess is for us TO INFORM OURSELVES and to begin helping our officials to behave more honestly and ethically by demanding reforms that the authors suggest are needed to clean up Illinois politics. I purchased the book last night and hope to begin it soon. I will be recommending it at my next book club.

Traffic light at Sheridan/Hollywood out--traffic backed up Sheridan for an hour

This morning the traffic light at Sheridan/Hollywood was out, flashing red. 311 was aware of many reports of it, yet nobody was on scene to do anything about it or direct traffic. Traffic was backed up on every feeder to it possible, for a full hour. Once you got to the light, traffic cleared right up, LSD was wide open. It was 100% because of this light that traffic backed up, yet nobody at the city can think to notice this and send someone to direct traffic? Literally 1000s were late to work because of this. (Including CTA users, sorry to the dozens who were stranded waiting for 147). This is the second or third largest urban metro area in the country, will there be a day when we're not being ran like we're a cornfield town of 8000?

It's not just this one example... this stuff happens WAY too often.

  • d3 NOH

Yes, I shouldn't have said disbanded, they do still exist, but they're a tiny fraction of what they once were (like... 10% of what they were). They used to exist to serve all purposes throughout Chicago, now they primarily and really only serve sporting events.

  • dj long time RP home owner

Well, they are also around downtown and the Gold Coast during rush hours too.

Rogers Park accountant?

We are looking for a good accountant in RP. We have two small rental properties so we would like to find someone familiar with taxes for rentals. Yelp says Reed is best recommended. Any rec's from the neighborhood?

  • Thanks, Dave. Do you do single family residential work? We may want some work done this summer or fall.

Shooting on Sheridan and Lunt

My housemate let me know that a shooting occurred just after 8:30 tonight at the corner of Lunt and Sheridan (east side of Sheridan). My housemate was across the street waiting for a bus. The shooter was inside a car traveling west on Lunt, and it appeared that they shot at a building since she didn't see any people walking on the sidewalk. Then the car turned left and headed south on Sheridan. The police came immediately. No ambulance came, suggesting no one was injured.

  • Cairo always percolatin'

Where did the bullets go? Did the car just randomly stop to shoot guns in the air? This story doesn't make any sense unless Kisse's second post about there being 2 cars is true.

My guess? Bullets went into the 2nd car, unreported.

@Conalea Not east of Sheridan. His car was "firebombed" on Lunt but I think he lives on Farwell? Someone here should know.....

  • Sonnys window is currently busted from an attempted robbery. I talked to people that work there as I live in one of the close buildings. The their was after cigarettes mostly. He also happen to drop most of them because he was so injured from going through the glass.

I hate to see this election come down to racial, ethnic, religious sectarianism, but this is Chicago

I hear the election will be decided by these questions, seems to me we should be honest about it, so what do you think.

Will African Americans vote for a person of Mexican heritage?

Will White "Ethnic" Catholics not vote for someone of their own religion?

I think yes and no, with absolutely nothing to base my opinion on.

Gabriel- after all the work has been done, all the community input gathered, funds allocated, Chuy said he thought BRT should go on Western instead of Ashland. This was an attempt to pander to the Ashland NIMBYs.

It's a urgently needed project that will benefit tens of thousands of riders, and I don't understand the value of throwing a wrench in the process over the objections of a couple dozen short-sighted people.

  • Gabriel Resident of PRRP

Don't know enough about this other than to say that Chuy raised issues about the insider deals involved in this. But why don't you ask him yourself. He is going to have a Rogers Park meet and greet at a Northside Action sponsored social. I can't be there, but if you can make it you can hear it from him. Here is what I have.

    "Thursday March 26 (tomorrow), 2:00pm
Chuy meet & greet at James Sneider Senior Apartments, 7450 N. Rogers. Be there, show your support!"

Devon-McCormick Redevelopment

I attended last night's meeting on redevelopment of the southeast corner at Devon and McCormick. I attended last night's meeting on redevelopment of the southeast corner at Devon and McCormick. The proposal is simple: In exchange for green space where the parking lot now stands, a developer proposes to tear down the theater and car wash and build a 3-story storage facility. The key to the project is the green space. The developer won't go ahead without it. Once the asphalt is torn up and replaced by turf, the deal would close in 45 days and demolition would begin.

Many at the meeting feel that only a business with no need for parking can be built at what is referred to as the "gateway" to West Ridge. Although redeveloping the theater as a cultural center was also proposed, representatives of the property owner were not interested.

The feeling of many at the meeting is that anything is better than what's there now--two buildings that the owner has neglected, that have attracted taggers and other criminals (the buildings have been broken into) and that have become an eyesore. There was equal feeling that we can do better than a storage facility. The site has been in this state for years. I think a few more weeks of community input won't hurt.

JCCWRP leaders are meeting with Chicago Park District officials later this week to discuss the park district's taking over management of the green space. If CPD declines, the community through one of its neighbor organizations could assume responsibility. There are many unanswered questions.

It's important that a much larger cross-section of the community attend the next meeting. This is close to being a done deal. The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District is ready to tear up the asphalt ASAP. Once that's done, the community has no say in the project.

Another meeting will be scheduled. A fuller explanation of what happened is on my blog.

The results: out-of-school suspensions at Sullivan are down 73 percent, incidents of misconduct have dropped 45 percent and average daily attendance increased from 80 percent two years ago to 90 percent today.

The Sun-Times editorial calls upon the Chicago Public Schools to follow Sullivan's lead in a program that focuses on changing behavior, rather than simply punishing behavior.

Congratulations to Principal Adams and the teachers, staff and students at Sullivan. Job well done!
