The Political Closet

When will any of the persons who want to run for the office of Alderman come out of their closets and speak to us in public? Are their any or are they just staying in the closet? Politics should be an open process but it doesn't seem like there are any challengers at this time with better ideas than what we have which seems pretty good to me. All in all Alderman Moore is doing a great job in a tough Ward to manage. If anyone thinks that she or he could do a better job I sure would like to hear about it. If you are out there please come out of your closets.

  • I tend to favor a potential candidate's ability to test the waters a bit before jumping in and declaring. Incumbents are always pretty tough to run against and the ability to sit tight and wait benefits a challenger, if only a little bit.

  • Suzanne Devane Ward 49 Republican Committeeman

    Don Gordon has declared. He doesn't post on Everyblock these days -- too bad.

So just how are you going to achieve this "Personal Responsibility," other than putting it inside dashes and arrows?
There's no end to this kind of solution:
War? --> International responsibility <--
Low wages? --> Corporate responsibility <--
Sexism? --> Gender Responsibility <--
Corruption? --> Voter Responsibility<--
Lack of education? --> Educational responsibility <--
If you shout the phrase long enough, does everyone magically become responsible?
Of course we want Personal Responsibility. Of course it would be great if everyone were Responsible. The question is what you're going to do to get people to be Personally Responsible, and specifically what you're going to do with all those problems for which we are all so Unpersonally Responsible and that make it so difficult for some young people to break free of a culture of violence: billions in drug money and high demand for drugs; the increasingly daunting cost of higher education; legacies of negativity handed down from one family to another; lack of access to jobs that lead to better jobs; public perceptions that certain races are more worthy than others; embattled schools forced to test rather than educate; money and power increasingly in the hands of rich people who only pretend to care about poverty and whose "solutions" so often make things worse; the greed of an increasingly consumerist society; citizens who increasingly vote on their own self-interests and systematically defund initiatives that might make a difference; easy access to guns and a national culture that glorifies guns;

    On some level, young criminals are aware of these collective acts of impersonal irresponsibility, and it has an effect on them. By no means am I saying that these individuals are innocent victims of the actions of the rest of us, but we can't separate the issue of their personal responsibility--or the responsibilities of their families--from the issue of our "impersonal" responsiblity toward them. In other words, they become more personally irresponsible in part because of our collective irrresponsibility.
    We can harp on all we like about how "it can only happen in the family," but that doesn't really address the situation in any way at all, because no one actually has any idea how such an ideal can actually be put into effect. It sounds very nice, but it's hypocritcal because the phrase just serves to make us feel morally superior and to wash our hands of any involvement or complicity in the problems that "other people, not us" are causing. It's an empty rhetorical solution to complex problems.

  • ; a criminal culture where rich white collar criminals get off scott free for Big Crimes while the lower classes are thrown in jail for small ones; a government perceived to be in the pockets of the lobbyists...

    If there's a solution to all this, it's not Personal Responsibility but Impersonal Responsibility. It's Impersonal Responsibility that we have been increasingly losing a sense of.
    Impersonal Responsibility is the accumulation of all those little decisions each of us makes and that collectively and indirectly cause problems for others:
    --not voting, because we are too tired or busy or cynical;
    --assuming that complex problems have simple solutions ("public schools are terrible, so let's turn them all into charters," etc.);
    --blaming only "Washington" or the politicians for problems that we the voters are just as responsible for creating;
    --complaining about high taxes, yet demanding public services that serve OUR interests but not the interests of others;
    --falling into the media's framing of every ideological problem as a simplistic Left-Right binary, which just leads to inaction ("both sides are equally right and both sides are equally wrong. Whatever.")

The Chicago Police Department is working around the clock at an aggressive strategy to prevent a repeat of the unusual spike in gun violence that has plagued our neighborhood in the last few weeks.

I attended Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy's monthly "CompStat" accountability session for north side district commanders this morning.

Though I am not able to share the details of the specific strategies employed, rest assured that 24th District Commander Thomas Waldera (see photo below) is receiving reinforcements from other Chicago Police Department units and is employing them in a comprehensive manner to prevent another outbreak of violence. The City of Evanston is also helping by redeploying some of its police officers to Howard Street.

Commander Waldera has been out in the field late into the night directing his forces.

These efforts are bearing fruit. The police have recovered six guns, some of them fully loaded, from, from suspected gang members. The individuals possessing those guns were arrested and charged.

Police also have arrested and charged an individual suspected in the March 25th shooting of a man at Ashland and Jarvis. They believe they know the identity of the other assailant and are currently searching for him.

Police also arrested an individual they suspect of being involved in the early Tuesday morning shooting of a 16-year-old boy at Jonquil and Ashland. Unfortunately, they currently only have enough evidence to charge the individual with the unlawful possession of an automobile.

The police and my office cannot do it alone, however. We need the involvement of all community residents. I urge you to attend one of the upcoming monthly CAPS beat meetings.

For information on the time and location of the CAPS meetings and more information on the efforts of the 24th District and my office to stem the gang violence, visit;

Understanding the Violence in Rogers Park

For most of you who regularly visit this blog, (e.g. law-abiding, mainstream society citizens) or "white people" (no racism intended), will never become the "intended" target of a shooting, nor will your children. The grey minivan who's occupants killed 16 year old Keno Glass just a few days ago. They were "hunting" with one "game" in mind oblivious to anything else. See, the occupants realities and you guys reality will never cross. But my reality is that they could have saw me before they saw Keno.

I am one of many who live in the economically starved portions of Rogers Park where everyone wants to get out, but just trying to survive the next day, week, month consumes all your energy. Education is the way out, everyone knows this, but finding support and having opportunity to persue it is something rarely given.

So we find ways to pacify ourselves alcohol, drugs, the newest Jordans loud music, the new dance, promiscuity. All to not think about our circumstances or lack thereof.

Yeah we look rough, tough and thugged out, but theres a lot more than what meets the eye.

There are complete retards in our neighborhoods though that have given up all hope of ever be anything other than what our society has labled them. These are the shooters and killers.

Everyday, because of these people I have watch every passing car as I walk through my neighborhood because when the killers from the rival neighborhoods come "hunting" they don't care that I'm not in a gang or that I've never held a gun in my life, they don't care about my dreams and aspirations, but because I look like everyone else I become a target? I may not be a perfect, law-abiding, mainstream society citizen, I smoke weed, I listen to loud music, and I wear Jordans, but this does NOT MEAN I SHOULD DIE!

This is my reality in Rogers Park and I need you guys to understand it.

  • Thank you for such a sincere telling of your very personal history. I moved to RP from Oakland CA only four months ago and have been constantly invigorated by how neighborly the people are around here. - Lastly, tell me what could be improved. I'm not asking you to trash it--just be honest.

This will help me immensely, as I'm seeing that blogs that discuss Chicago real estate only like to talk about places like Lincoln Park, Lakeview, West Loop...ect..ect.

If you have a lead or own a building, feel free to contact me directly.

Thanks,

    Mike, although I don't, I can see why some here might think you a troll. There does seem to be some contradiction in your posts. Above, in response to Dee, you wrote that you would "...be primarily working from home" and yet in your original post back in March you indicated that you would be starting a job at a school in West Englewood. At that time, many in Rogers Park expressed concern about such a long commute. Can you explain? You are limiting your options, of course, by wanting to be in a building of 8 or fewer units, but you must know that. The building I mentioned above has 25 units in a beautiful courtyard.

    As you've no doubt noticed, we in Rogers Park seem to be working harder to attract you than the residents of Bronzeville. (Yeah, I checked your posts in that neighborhood and the comments on them.) I hope you have a good time looking around Rogers Park. Stop in for dinner at Twisted Tapas on Pratt just east of Sheridan. Terrific food and service.

Understanding the Violence in RP "The Shooters Prospective"

Yeah, I'm angry.....and I should be, cause in a weird way you m-----f-----s are part of the reason why I'm out here on the hunt at 2 a.m.(I'ma get back to that in a sec). Anyway, I just popped a pill, washed it down with 80 proof and my two homies in the car with me just lit a blunt and passed it to me. The tactical plain-clothes officers are headed in for shift-change and we ain't too worried about the fat-a-- blue and whites working the graveyard shift. The 40 cal. on my lap got 16 hollow-tipped slugs and on my dead big brother, somebody from the hood that did it is gonna die tonight.

Haha, ya'll think I'ma drug-crazed thug right? Wrong!... Truth is, is that I'm hurting about what happen to my brother and my other friends in the hood, and scared it could happen to me. But the hood teaches you that you gotta use that hurt and fear to strike back, if not, then you ain't gone live long where I come from.

Funny though, how it seems like I was groomed for this moment all my life, the abuse at home, weed-smoking mama telling me I would never be sh-t, getting jumped on after school, teachers who saw only a dumb, bad kid and not understanding how to help, and you people reading this who cross the street when you see someone like me as though I'm garbage to be avoided, thereby confirming my thug identity... smh.

No blame game here though, cause when I pull this trigger tonight, I'm probably gonna be caught, and if I end up spending the rest of my life in prison, it's cool cause everything I've experienced in life told me I never had a chance anyway.

Sleep well tonight, tell yourself it was "him" who pulled the trigger not you.

Yet somehow, the instinct to survive is inherent in all of us, though some have more "true grit" than others. Remember that there's no one who has absolutely EVERYTHING. It's impossible and life doesn't work like that. We all walk through life with our respective pasts on our backs. Our pasts influence our feelings about everything. These days, the word "security" means something different to everyone.
    We look up and we see people who seem to have everything, when in reality they may be lacking something vitally important. Thing is, is that I don't believe the idea some of you may have formed of me "thechiraqi" and my writings would coincide if you guys ran into me on the street. So I thought I'd give you guys a fast rundown of me.

My mama tried to kill me, my sister and take her own life when I was 3 y.o.... various foster-homes thereafter for 4 years until the state deemed mama "worthy" of custody again. The physically abusive step-father came next. I was a "runaway" by 12 y.o.... 26 tours in the Juvenile Detention Center up until age 16 for various crimes. After a small hiatus traveling, my adult criminal career scored me numerous arrests until 3 felony convictions awarded me 9 years in the "best" Maximum Security prisons the state has to offer, (phony cheerfulness intended).

I was paroled five years ago and haven't been back since. Most days I dress and look like the "common hoodlum", it's a roll over habit that's hard to get rid of. I don't actually speak as well as I write. I have only a G.E.D. and no college credentials.

Now at age 31, because of my background or lack thereof, I can't bring about the needed changes in the community but I've been writing in hopes of inspiring you guys to do so.

  • Vanessa, that's a great idea.

  • A guy from my hometown got hired as a writer for Late Night With Seth Meyers. He had a twitter account that he'd post jokes on, and gained a good following. Folks from the Seth Meyers show started following and called him in for an interview: http://www.vulture.com/2014/04/guy-tweets-his-way-from-peoria-to-30-rock.html

    I'm Generation X, so I grew up watching the start of the internet and how its use and effect has expanded. You should really think about it, thechiraqi, because you never know how far your impact will go.

When to call 911

If you see any gang criminal activity such as drug dealing, fighting, breaking into garages, etc.. please call 911 and report the activity.
If you observe multiple gang members loitering on a street corner, in a park, etc.. Call 911 and report it.
If you observe gang members drinking in public call 911 and report it.
Remember you can remain anonymous when you call 911.

When to call 311

If there are gang members living in a building call 311 and ask to report the building to the troubled buildings department and they will issue viloations to the building owner and pressure them to evict the gang members or the landlords will receive fines and possibly lose their properties.
If you observe any gang graffiti please call 311 or go to www.cityofchicago.org and report it. They will remove it free of charge. Even if it is not on your property just call 311 and give them the address. Graffiti makes the neighborhood look bad and gangbangers like to hang in areas that look unkept.
Remember you can remain anonymous when you call 311.

My lease is up June 1 and I am not having any luck finding an apartment that I like. If anyone has any leads please let me know. Ideally, I would like to find a place that has the following:

* a 1 or 2 bedroom apt.
* modern- I don't like vintage stuff
* Allows cats and dogs with no monthly pet rent. Bonus if there is no pet fee at all. :)
* Has in-unit laundry
* Has parking
* Rent range - under $1,250
* Within walking distance to the red line

I like the :Loyola so that would be my first pick.

Anyone see any recent scribblings or get pamphlets on their car again?

    I've seen him come out of his place with several pamphlets. He lives on Sheridan and Estes and drives a blue/teal Trail Blazer. I talked to one of his friends/neighbors. He's apparently schizophrenic. He's the same guy that was on Hollywood and Sheridan last summer holding up a sign with a Bible quote on it. He was fined at one point for this, but that didn't detour him.

These three playgrounds are part of the 103 neighborhood playgrounds that will be refurbished or built across the City in 2014.

People's Gas Parking Restrictions

It’s appalling how People’s Gas is allowed to set open ended two week parking restrictions on nearly every part of a 3 block radius around Estes and Greenview. If this was downtown or even Lakeview they’d be forced to have much more defined timelines, better communication to the community, and a more restricted closure schedule. Are the project managers at People’s so bad that they can’t plan for one street for two days, the next street for two days, and so on?

    @thechiraqi ... your posts are not misunderstood (at least not on my part). Some people see gang bangers and criminals that terrorize a neighborhood and need to be locked up because they kill people. Those people are right. Other people recognize that these kids are out there banging because they were dealt a very unfair hand in life from a very early age. Those people are also right. My friend is an cop in LA and told me once that he never arrested a criminal who didn't have a story of how they were once a victim them self.

    My personal opinion on this is people who kill need to be locked up, but that is like continuing to mop a floor because of a leaky pipe. It's reactive. It's addressing the symptom of the problem rather than the source of the problem. The shooting are a symptom of an underlying problem. The source of the underlying problem is the environment that many of this kids are born into, which lead to the feeling that you described in your "perspective" thread.

    I think people focus on the symptom because it's an easier solution. I'm not really sure how to best address the source of the problem. I myself have not lived in the world. If you have, maybe you have some ideas. I think it needs to start with kids when they are very young. When they are still impressionable and before they get to the hopeless state that you describe. Not sure how to do it. Would be very happy to hear your opinions. If you come from that background yourself, what could have helped you or friends of yours from becoming involved in gangs?

I've been using him for years, including when I lived in west Rogers Park. It *may* take a little while to find a good time on his schedule. I'm also an Angie's List member, and his ratings on that list are all A's.

  • I've just had a series of jobs done by Lakeshore Handyman and I enthusiastically recommend them.

Lose Your Lizards?

Found these 2 guys in my front yard this morning, in a container in a paper bag. They were dead (it seemed), brought them in and now they have arisen. Just in time for Easter. About 4" nose to tail. No tags or chips. Are they yours? If so, wtf?

    Dee, some mice seem incredibly stupid. A year or so ago, I was going to bed without turning on the bedroom light to avoid waking my companion. I saw something small and dark on the bed so I got a flashlight. My cat had dispensed with a mouse and left it on the bed as a present for me. And possums are all over the place. I, too, find them hanging out on the third-floor porch.

    I read the first party source 2 weeks ago when it came out, Chicago Magazine, not a third party source by a NY based reporter for a UK based news rehash site.

    what they would have gained would have been a reduction in scope and count of the crimes they were looking at (in order to do this in a year, vs 3 years of work). That doesn't invalidate what they did look at -- those conversions still did take place... but what they would have lost is the ability to know there weren't others not classified as such if the crime wasn't even on record as something in their scope of examination. Nobody is disputing that they did a very detailed, long examination of crime data, nor are they disputing their findings.

    They mention in their own article speaking to officers/detectives who said there was an "invisible hand" that made some cases simply disappear. So, if those cases weren't classified by CPD, they weren't studied, no? That's the logical conclusion that I would draw. Unless they were able to drum up every detective in the city to get their gut instinct on every case that had ever "disappeared" how would they have even studied it in the first place? .... their story is ongoing and they promise another installment in next month's issue.

    It's easy to claim lower crime stats when the reclassification of a lot of crime is changed to a lower and less violent name when it comes to report writing within the enforcement circles as directed by city hall. So that aggravated battery where a bat was used but the person wasn't actually struck with it is changed to a simple battery. Same old scams and directives from city hall which is protect this cities reputation at all costs!! Businesses looking to move here are looking at that as well as renters and buyers of residential and commercial property...they all look at that and city hall knows it!!! Chicago Electric Aggregation / Integrys

So, doing the math, I seem to be paying ComEd 4.2 cents/kWh for electricity. The notice from the city regarding Integrys says that if I don't opt-out, I'll be paying a price of 5.299 cents/kWh through May 2015. Assuming everything staying flat, it seems to be cheaper to stay with ComEd. But, rates are going up in June, no? Is anybody else considering opting out, or do you have an opinion on why it'd be wise to not opt-out?

And if I do opt-out, can I opt-in again later? Or am I out of the loop until something else comes along in May 2015?

There have been myriad specific questions asked of you in many threads. I respectfully request that you meet with Ward residents in a public forum to discuss ALL the issues of concern and interest to YOUR constituents. I am happy to:

1) sponsor this and make all arrangements for the location;
2) collaborate with your office (or the 49th Ward Democratic organization – EVEN Helen) to organize and publicize the event;
3) create a preparatory program agenda to insure you are prepared with data necessary to answer FAQ’s; and,
4) Moderate the session with a member of the 49th Ward Democratic Organization to insure that the forum runs with decorum and all resident questions are covered.

I believe it is appropriate to give you at least two to three weeks to prepare before such an event occurs. Will you agree to this public forum? If so, I will reach out to your office immediately and we can begin working on this. Thank you

The police department , elected officials , city departments , and local residents have to band together in a unified assault on this " CANCER "

The only contact info on the flyer is an email that doesn't work. Also I found out that there's a parked website called holyspiritproductions.com but that belongs to someone in England.

So, it seems this guy is spreading his message without any objectives of recruiting people for some church. Pretty much the same MO of the tagger: He wants to inform you of something. In his crazy little mind he's doing good by "warning" you.

@ Trish in RP said about the suspect: "Kinda hipsterish, skinny, dark hair with beard. He had on cargo shorts and a messenger bag..."

I believe this guy has to live around Sheridan and Lunt, Greenleaf, or Estes. (Because the alleys in this area are being constantly attacked) What do you think?

They would meet regularly and were very loud, they would sit on the cars and throw bottles and trash til all hours of the night. So, we placed a staked flood light at the base of a tree and shined it up into the tree, after trimming it up from the bottom, and so far so good. They do not like the lights, they prefer dark corners, so we eliminated the darkness. We have it on a timer so it makes it even easier, and it looks very pretty too. We will be putting in another one this weekend.
Prior to doing this we would call police, but more often than not, they would be gone by the time the police arrived.
It was also a very effective way to decorate your space because during the Holidays, we replaced the clear lights with multi-colored lights.
Just an easy way to beautify your garden and keep yourself a bit safer...I recommend you try it.

And Daniel hasn't been stable enough to elaborate on much. His Dr's feel at this time its not good to push this now since a police report has been taken .
    I'm Sorry that I dont have specifics ,all I can reiterate is that although we live in such a cool area we are still under the guise of persons that have not evolved to respect one another and continue to create an environment of negative energy and that can be unsafe . I will pray for them and their families and hope that no one ever hurts them or the persons they care for EVER !!!

Best eating in RP (for NewToRP)

Hi guys, since NewToRP is new to RP, and since her sisters are in town, and since she had a bad experience at Giordano's last night, thought the long time locals could help her out with suggestions on neighborhood gems!

I'll through a few out:

- Grill Inn for Burgers
- Common Cup for coffee
- Twisted Tappas? Okay I confess I've not eaten there myself, but I hear only great things about it :)

Chicago police officers under the leadership of Commander Thomas Waldera responded quickly last week to several shooting incidents in Rogers Park. Commander Waldera requested and received re-enforcements from the Chicago Police Department. The Commander has been on the streets with his tactical lieutenant each night from dusk to dawn personally directing the allocation of those officers.

Thanks to their efforts, Rogers Park experienced no shooting incidents over the weekend.

Last Thursday, a 21-year-old man was shot by an unidentified man on the 1600 block Morse Avenue Thursday night at approximately 8:00 p.m., and a 25 year-old woman was shot while sitting in her car on the 6600 block of N, Sheridan Road Friday morning shortly before 2:00 a.m.

Commander Waldera tells me police believe the Morse Avenue shooting was gang-related, the latest in a series of shootings resulting from a conflict between two factions of the same street gang. Earlier in the week one man was killed and two others were injured in what police believe to be a gang-related shooting on the 1600 block of W. Howard Street.

The police are not certain whether the Sheridan shooting was the result of the same gang conflict or a separate "road rage" incident. They are still investigating.

I have been in constant communication with Commander Waldera since last Monday's shooting incident. His hands-on and proactive response to these incidents has helped to stem the violence and prevent a further escalation of the conflict.

Police will continue to be on heightened alert this week.

If you would like more information about the police response to the recent shootings or what you can do to help stem the violence, I urge you to attend one of the upcoming monthly CAPS beat meetings.

For the time place and loication of the beat meetings, visit:

http://www.ward49.com/site/epage/152025_322.htm

Commander Waldera will be present at both meetings.
