Understanding the Violence in Rogers Park

For most of you who regularly visit this blog, (e.g. law-abiding, mainstream society citizens) or "white people" (no racism intended), will never become the "intended" target of a shooting, nor will your children. Although you the readers and I share the same community, we have totally different realities within it.

For most of you who regularly visit this blog, (e.g. law-abiding, mainstream society citizens) or "white people" (no racism intended), will never become the "intended" target of a shooting, nor will your children. Although you the readers and I share the same community, we have totally different realities within it.

The grey minivan who's occupants killed 16 year old Keno Glass just a few days ago. They were "hunting" with one "game" in mind oblivious to anything else. See, the occupants realities and you guys reality will never cross. But my reality is that they could have saw me before they saw Keno.

I am one of many who live in the economically starved portions of Rogers Park where everyone wants to get out, but just trying to survive the next day, week, month consumes all your energy. Education is the way out, everyone knows this, but finding support and having opportunity to persue it is something rarely given.

So we find ways to pacify ourselves alcohol, drugs, the newest Jordans loud music, the new dance, promiscuity. All to not think about our circumstances or lack thereof.

Yeah we look rough, tough and thugged out, but theres a lot more than what meets the eye.

There are complete retards in our neighborhoods though that have given up all hope of ever be anything other than what our society has labled them. These are the shooters and killers.

Everyday, because of these people I have watch every passing car as I walk through my neighborhood because when the killers from the rival neighborhoods come "hunting" they don't care that I'm not in a gang or that I've never held a gun in my life, they don't care about my dreams and aspirations, but because I look like everyone else I become a target? I may not be a perfect, law-abiding, mainstream society citizen, I smoke weed, I listen to loud music, and I wear Jordans, but this does NOT MEAN I SHOULD DIE!

This is my reality in Rogers Park and I need you guys to understand it.

Chalk one up for the good-guys. Last night some LOC's came down to Morse "hunting" for some PBG's.

Thank goodness the CPD cut them off at the pass. Hat-tip, officers.

I agree with some of your points Mitchell and Ann. There definitely needs to be stricter penalties for gun crimes and lesser penalties for non-violent drug offenses. Could this be addressed by changing Chicago laws?

If so, Rahm is up for re-election next year, is he not? Perhaps that's a good place to start, since the City Council is generally weak when compared to the influence of the Mayor's office. Around what time of year do people announce when they intend to run for mayor?

RP restaurant delivery options

Any recs for good restaurants that deliver? I tend to order from the same places and would like to try some new places.

  • Jeremy Watson critical thinker and logic advocate

Vince's Pizza and Taqueria on the south side of Devon @ Bosworth. Can't beat the burgers and I haven't had one thing that wasn't worthy. Google for their website and you can order through it.

  • You're welcome DBLight70. I ordered from them when I used to live at Greenleaf and Sheridan, and since I've been at Howard and Clark. Usually, they are further down the list, so you have to keep scrolling to get to them. And, of course, they have very particular hours. Although, I have to say that I actually enjoy Fatty's Burgers more (also in Evanston), when I want a good burger and onions rings.

So disgusted!

So my sisters are in town visiting....I thought it would be a great idea to take them to Giordano's on Sheridan to experience their first Chicago deep dish. Bad idea! My sister was loving her slice of deep dish pepperoni when she discovered a cooked ROACH! We were immediately mortified! The waitress grab the plates so quickly so that we couldn't take a picture, and the manager came over to apologize.... he was truly embarrassed. He kept asking "what can I do, I'm so sorry... what can I do....do you want me to make you another pizza." We said absolutely NO NO No! And left.

We didn't make a scene, but it was soooo very disgusting. Yuck!

  • I second the recommendation for Pequod's

  • Apart Pizza is good. It's in Edgewater on Broadway, but they don't do pan or deep dish pizza. They also deliver to RP through GrubHub.

Walking does a body good!

My coworkers think I'm nuts lmao. I canceled my gym membership and happy to report since March 31, as of this morning, according to my doctor's scale I lost 12 pounds. My home scale says 14, but whatever.

My doctor was amazed. I told her I've been walking the fat away :-)

18 more pesky pounds....to reach my ultimate healthy BMI goal.

I'm starting a walking club....please join us next Saturday. Healthy Living!! :-)

  • Hi, New. Did you guys walk today? How was the turnout? Let me know if you're going next Saturday. I'll join.

  • I wanted to go but already had an appointment this morning at 8:30am. Please let me know if you do this again.

The Chicago Police Department is working around the clock at an aggressive strategy to prevent a repeat of the unusual spike in gun violence that has plagued our neighborhood in the last few weeks.

I attended Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy's monthly "CompStat" accountability session for north side district commanders this morning.

Though I am not able to share the details of the specific strategies employed, rest assured that 24th District Commander Thomas Waldera (see photo below) is receiving reinforcements from other Chicago Police Department units and is employing them in a comprehensive manner to prevent another outbreak of violence. The City of Evanston is also helping by redeploying some of its police officers to Howard Street.

Commander Waldera has been out in the field late into the night directing his forces.

These efforts are bearing fruit. The police have recovered six guns, some of them fully loaded, from, from suspected gang members. The individuals possessing those guns were arrested and charged.

Police also have arrested and charged an individual suspected in the March 25th shooting of a man at Ashland and Jarvis. They believe they know the identity of the other assailant and are currently searching for him.

Police also arrested an individual they suspect of being involved in the early Tuesday morning shooting of a 16-year-old boy at Jonquil and Ashland. Unfortunately, they currently only have enough evidence to charge the individual with the unlawful possession of an automobile.

The police and my office cannot do it alone, however. We need the involvement of all community residents. I urge you to attend one of the upcoming monthly CAPS beat meetings.

For information on the time and location of the CAPS meetings and more information on the efforts of the 24th District and my office to stem the gang violence, visit;

Verbal threats of violence are still illegal. People can get orders of protection, where if the order of protection is violated, that person can be arrested. Cameras can be put up in and near the building to film criminal activity and police can be notified to keep an eye on the offending individual. How were you able to get the gang member out?

Has anyone tried to negotiate peace between our warring factions.

Considering the human carnage left in the wake of the 15 yr old feud. Has anyone from the police, politicians or anyone else reached out to those feuding? There have Ben attempts to profit yes. The cease fire peeps and folks get involved once money is involved. Have there been other attempts?

I've heard a problem with the Chicago gang structure is the destruction of the gang hierarchy.

Law enforcement, local, state and federal dismantled the gang leadership which could play a role in limiting violence. This makes sense if you think about it. Gangs are interested in making money. They always have been, always will be.

Today with fractured gang structures small, independent contractors are gathering the fragments and forming smaller gang units. These gang units now seek to control small bits of territory for the sale of drugs. Cheap, plentiful drugs.

Does anyone remember Eric "Yummy" Sandifer from the '90's? He killed a young girl - a "civilian". This killing brought the heat down on the gang's drug selling turf and interrupted business. A few weeks later, when the gang leadership caught up with Sandifer, he was found hanging from a train viaduct. This is no longer possible.

Of course, the underlying economics of the problem will persist: prohibition of drugs. Prohibition doesnt' work, but that's a fruitless conversation for another day (btw, search Portugal and the lifting of prohibition for some interesting reading on the subject).

15 year mandatory minimums for gun violence. Will it serve as a deterrent? Maybe not a deterrent, but it will remove predators from the communities being savaged.

Also, Chicago Magazine's investigation was quite thorough, not the kind of research that indicates the likelihood of a lot more cases of homicide reclassification than the magazine itself discovered. Although I think the article is an important one and should be taken seriously (part II is forthcoming), I also think the magazine is playing up the relatively small numbers of homicide reclassifications it identified, thus allowing people like you to cast ALL Chicago homicide numbers into doubt, something that a reading of the article itself does not justify:

"Chicago Magazine conducted a 12-month examination of the Chicago Police Department’s crime statistics going back several years, poring through public and internal police records and interviewing crime victims, criminologists, and police sources of various ranks. We identified 10 people, including Groves, who were beaten, burned, suffocated, or shot to death in 2013 and whose cases were reclassified as death investigations, downgraded to more minor crimes, or even closed as noncriminal incidents—all for illogical or, at best, unclear reasons. This troubling practice goes far beyond murders, documents and interviews reveal. Chicago found dozens of other crimes, including serious felonies such as robberies, burglaries, and assaults, that were misclassified, downgraded to wrist-slap offenses, or made to vanish altogether."

Police departments all over the country regularly reclassify non-homicide crimes, so that part doesn't surprise me. But what is surprising is the reclassification of homicides, which is much more difficult to do, since the press is much more likely to discover it (as Chicago Magazine did). And that's also why there were only 10 homicide reclassifications discovered in 2013.

Joe – As you know, there have been lots of discussions on social media these days about the state of the Ward from the surge of recent crimes, to economic development plans for our commercial corridors, to education. There have been myriad specific questions asked of you in many threads. I respectfully request that you meet with Ward residents in a public forum to discuss ALL the issues of concern and interest to YOUR constituents. I am happy to:

1) sponsor this and make all arrangements for the location;
2) collaborate with your office (or the 49th Ward Democratic organization – EVEN Helen) to organize and publicize the event;
3) create a preparatory program agenda to insure you are prepared with data necessary to answer FAQ’s; and,
4) Moderate the session with a member of the 49th Ward Democratic Organization to insure that the forum runs with decorum and all resident questions are covered.

I believe it is appropriate to give you at least two to three weeks to prepare before such an event occurs. Will you agree to this public forum? If so, I will reach out to your office immediately and we can begin working on this. Thank you

  • Suzanne Devane Ward 49 Republican Committeeman

Stacey -- Joe works for us, so I have no problem calling him Joe. I call him Joe to his face. Your attitude demonstrates an odd mentality to me that is actually the basis for a fundamental problem vis-a-vis all elected officials. We are supposed to bow and scrape to them when THEY work for us?! I won't do it. You shouldn't either.

  • Stacey, politicians and elected officials are usually the same people. Joe Moore is both. I suppose Suzanne can be characterized as a politician, since she is the Republican Committeeman, but it's her job, as a member of the opposite political party, to challenge the officeholder, whether publicly or privately. Healthy debate is good for everybody. Let's see what happens.

Best eating in RP (for NewToRP)

Hi guys, since NewToRP is new to RP, and since her sisters are in town, and since she had a bad experience at Giordano's last night, thought the long time locals could help her out with suggestions on neighborhood gems!

I'll through a few out:
- Heartland Cafe (long wait for the food, but great environment and good quality)
- Grill Inn for Burgers
- Common Cup for coffee
- Twisted Tappas? Okay I confess I've not eaten there myself, but I hear only great things about it :)

What would you guys put on a list of must-eat places?

  • Dee On Newgard '92

R Public House is serving a Sunday brunch on their patio.

  • Heartland's new management brought in a chef and now has a new menu. Gone is the bland Mexican and vegan food. It's really delicious. More people are finding this out as noted by the heavy dinner crowd I saw the other weekday evening. Try it again and make up your own mind.

Decent people do not have to live in fear. They should not have their " quality of life " diminished by the actions of society's MISFITS.

These BAD buildings ( and their occupants ) need to targeted for corrective action.

The police department , elected officials , city departments , and local residents have to band together in a unified assault on this " CANCER "
that affects all of us .

Please list the address of any building
on YOUR block that causes you concern:

..... Poorly maintained
..... Loitering nearby
..... Thug residents

Your reported addresses can serve as a list of buildings to be targeted for corrective action.

Thank you.

I don't see any on my block. But I have seen many during my walks. I'm not sure though what constitutes a "bad building."

I see abandoned ones, but no activity. Can we really categorize the low income housing (CHA) as "bad buildings"? That's vilifying a group of people as problematic when not all are, presumably, contributing to the issues plaguing the community.

Can you also describe what a thug resident is? I don't want to discriminate.

    Thanks.

  • NEW :

If it walks like a DUCK ,

    talks like a DUCK ,

    acts like a DUCK ,

    it probably is a DUCK.

    Insert "THUG" for "DUCK".

  • Dee On Newgard '92

If I may, Pat, I suggest that anyone who would like to report a problem building or thug(s), but wishes to remain anonymous here, report them to Pat via a personal message. Pat, are there any other links, e-mail addresses or other contacts you can provide for this purpose?

Murder rate in Rogers Park

Rogers Park has a serious uptick in murders for 2014. Summer hasn't even arrived, and we've already matched the total for 2013. We're only four months into the calendar year.

This is on track to be the worst year for murders in 5 years. This is an issue that should be front and center. Not swept under a rug.

Yet, Alderman Joe Moore is more concerned about Divvy.

I think Ald. Moore is doing a good job. I also think that he is taking a balanced approach to the issues and concerns of the neighborhood. Having discussions on Divvy is part of the balanced approach and great for Rogers Park. Becoming obsessed with one particular dynamic and complete focus on one thing leads to one becoming unbalanced - and that is not a good thing. I for one am going to tune out all of the sensationalizing of the recent events and am going to be out and about this beautiful weekend enjoying Rogers Park. The more of us out on the streets, the more it creates a positive energy and invites more of the good people to come out and feel good about our neighborhood. I definitely will include trips to Twisted Tappas, Bullhead Cantina and others. Enjoy RP this weekend if you can!

  • Part of an elected official's job is looking at the big picture. Is crime important? Absolutely! But, we also need to focus of other aspects of the neighborhood, even positive ones like increasing options for transportation and recreation in the neighborhood (Divvy), capital improvements to the neighborhood (Participatory Budgeting) and highlighting positive aspects of our neighborhood (Follow Me Friday). Being so narrow minded as to focus on one issue alone leads to neglect in other areas, which is never a good thing.

Chicago police officers under the leadership of Commander Thomas Waldera responded quickly last week to several shooting incidents in Rogers Park. Commander Waldera requested and received re-enforcements from the Chicago Police Department. The Commander has been on the streets with his tactical lieutenant each night from dusk to dawn personally directing the allocation of those officers.

Thanks to their efforts, Rogers Park experienced no shooting incidents over the weekend.

Last Thursday, a 21-year-old man was shot by an unidentified man on the 1600 block Morse Avenue Thursday night at approximately 8:00 p.m., and a 25 year-old woman was shot while sitting in her car on the 6600 block of N, Sheridan Road Friday morning shortly before 2:00 a.m.

Commander Waldera tells me police believe the Morse Avenue shooting was gang-related, the latest in a series of shootings resulting from a conflict between two factions of the same street gang. Earlier in the week one man was killed and two others were injured in what police believe to be a gang-related shooting on the 1600 block of W. Howard Street.

The police are not certain whether the Sheridan shooting was the result of the same gang conflict or a separate "road rage" incident. They are still investigating.

I have been in constant communication with Commander Waldera since last Monday's shooting incident. His hands-on and proactive response to these incidents has helped to stem the violence and prevent a further escalation of the conflict.

Police will continue to be on heightened alert this week.

If you would like more information about the police response to the recent shootings or what you can do to help stem the violence, I urge you to attend one of the upcoming monthly CAPS beat meetings.

When to call 911

If you see any gang criminal activity such as drug dealing, fighting, breaking into garages, etc.. please call 911 and report the activity.
If you observe multiple gang members loitering on a street corner, in a park, etc.. Call 911 and report it.
If you observe gang members drinking in public call 911 and report it.
Remember you can remain anonymous when you call 911.

When to call 311

If there are gang members living in a building call 311 and ask to report the building to the troubled buildings department and they will issue viloations to the building owner and pressure them to evict the gang members or the landlords will receive fines and possibly lose their properties.
If you observe any gang graffiti please call 311 or go to www.cityofchicago.org and report it. They will remove it free of charge. Even if it is not on your property just call 311 and give them the address. Graffiti makes the neighborhood look bad and gangbangers like to hang in areas that look unkept.

The CPD 24th District is keeping track of where the gang or non-gang graffiti is. This helps in tracking the movement of the gangs and if they are trying to take over other territory. This is important, and has proved effective with keeping track of the gangs.

This is my second post and I would like to thank everyone who was concerned enough to reply and care. My Partner Daniel was back and doing much better, unfortunately he was Gay bashed last night by three men.
I dont know all the details as yet and he is home from the hospital this morning it happened last night and as soon as I find out more i will re-post the area,he is securely asleep and I didn't want him to relive it today . So please be very conscious and be careful walking alone. I only know it was three men 2 white 1 black and in there twenty's.

I am so angry but will let god handle this. As stated in my last post, he is the most gentle caring guy . I am asking for your spiritual energy (prayer ) for my best friend ( Daniel ) that he doesn't have any head trauma ,he was hit repeatedly on his head !

“It's not enough to have lived.
We should be determined to live for something.
May I suggest that it be creating joy for others,
sharing what we have for the betterment of personkind,
bringing hope to the lost and love to the lonely.”

Cribbage anyone?

Meetup.com is remarkably devoid of any cribbage group/get together, so I thought I'd see if there are any RP folk interested in getting together, perhaps for a regular session?

- chris

  • 15-2, 15-4, and a pair is 6! Cribbage is pure poetry. I have so little free time and probably shouldn't add more to the list but I just want to say how happy I am that you're proposing a cribbage meet-up! I grew up in a rural Wisconsin tavern and spent many hours at the end if a bar challenging the old timers in cribbage. Such an awesome game.

Graffiti Question

There is new "BDK" graffiti on a sign near my home. I'm tempted to just get some paint and paint over it myself. Should I be worried about doing this for any reason? Thanks in advance for your input.

Awesome Food at Twisted Tapas

I know it's been plugged here before, but this place can't get enough praise! Twisted Tapas at Pratt & Sheridan (just east of Sheridan) is absolutely awesome. Non-traditional, creative food served in tapas portions at super affordable prices. You can have a half dozen taste experiences in one sitting. It's a great place to take a group of friends.

Great experience, and their staff is friendly and awesome. Check it out if you haven't already!

  • Al I. Rogers Park since 2006

The boulevard is wider than usual in front of their place and has trees and shrubs in it, and a taller than usual fence around it. Thus it shrinks the usable sidewalk area significantly. If you took all that out and paved it, they could have a wonderful patio. I don't see that happening, though. However, on nice summer nights, they can have their giant windows open, and you get a nice breeze inside. I really love that space in the summer.

  • Helen North of Howard for 50 + years

Al, I'd forgotten about those windows. I hadn't been in there in the summer for a long time because I didn't care for the two previous restaurants in that space, but I seem to recall that Cafe Suron, the Persian restaurant I loved, would open them in the summer.

Termite contracts and Terminix

Big question about the need for a termite contract and feedback about Terminix in particular: When we bought our house five or so years ago, it came with a Terminix contract. There was no termite activity but were told (by Terminix) how necessary it was to keep it up; in case of recurrence we had a warranty and wouldn't pay for treatment.

The contract , which is up for renewal, isn't cheap. Can anyone comment and advise on the need for the contract and an average renewal fee that seems reasonable? Or send me to a site/person who knows about this stuff and can help navigate the process?

  • Yay! Thanks for that Darrin. I do have 6 years of Terminix's "certifications" which I'll keep. By the follow-up visit before closing, did that come from the same company you used to treat the termites, or elsewhere? Do you know anything about WDI inspections? These are independent inspectors who will conform no activity. Cost under $200. I just want to make sure that in the event we do sell it won't be an issue.
    Thanks again!

  • Darrin Greenview Terrace Association Member

I had it from the same company that had done the treatment. I also documented where I had repairs done. I haven't heard of a WDI inspection but for $200 I would be all for it... better than losing a deal!

mover recommendations? (short move/1bedroom) Tip amount?

Anybody have recommendations for good/affordable movers.
-1bedroom 2nd fl Andersonville to 1 bedroom 1st floor Rogers Park.

What are people tipping their mover's these days?

:)

  • Melissa Rogers Park - Jarvis Square Resident

We've used Movetastic as well as Joey's Movers in Skokie - both were great and really put effort into getting the move done quickly which we appreciated!

  • I tipped $50 per mover (hired professionals with insurance), but that's because I moved from the third floor of a 3-story walkup and they had to hoist my sofa and elliptical down the outer side of the outside stairwell this winter. I would think that $20 per crew member would be fine.

Homicide near Chase and Sheridan

At 6:30am police were in my driveway. Stated there was a homicide "over there" (he was looking towards Touhy and Sheridan). The person came through the alley and jumped my back fence. Proceeded to exit my yard and left my gate open. The evidence (looked like a blanket) lay next to the condo building to the east of my home.

Nothing on dnarogers park. Just wondered if anyone knew anything

Multiple TIRES Flattened/Slashed on North Eastlake Terrace

I was walking my dogs in Juneway Terrace Park on the lakefront this morning and I noticed a car with a jack stand stuck under the frame, next to the flat tire. "The owner must of given up trying to lift the car?" I thought. Then I noticed on the another flat tire. Then ANOTHER. There must of been about 8 CARS with flat tires on the east side of North Eastlake Terrace. Pretty blatant vandalism, targeting that side of the street.

MY car was NOT parked there, so I am not a direct victim. Still upsetting. I tried calling 311 and the rang and rang with no answer...

  • Not pothole related. They were deliberately slashed!

  • Roxanne psychotherapist, gardner. 39 yr. resident of RP.

For this I would call "911" never "311". This is a police issue. Let them figure out what really happened to these cars. I think we need to call "911" more often in light of what is being reported that is happening lately in our beloved Rogers Park. I, for one, don't want a "long hot summer" here. Period. I am saddened to hear of what happened in your neighborhood.

A certain group kept coming back (repeatedly!!) making violent threats to someone inside the building, but cpd made it's presence known and we finally had some quiet... I often see suspicious activity around the alley. Not wanting to waste the cops time, I only report certainties -- yet I truly appreciated their efforts on this one.

Has anyone else noticed the alley near the Willie B White park at night? These are not teens just hanging out...I see cops drive by all the time and the group just waits till they pass and then continues their activities.

Thank you!!

  • Evict everyone residing at the Jonquil / Ashland building ?

Repopulate the building with SENIOR Citizens ?

.....They are usually not the THUG type.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Broadcast Lawrence Welk music to the block ?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Make HELEN ( N of H ) the building manager ?

.....She would get good behavior out of the tenants.

  • I don't know-- I've met some pretty mean senior citizens before... Maybe the IRS could do a "random" (wink) audit of all suspected thugs. Even if we can sentence them all, at least they'll be preoccupied for some time. Do you think they all filed their tax returns on time?

I'm having trouble getting responses to furniture ads I post on Craigslist in Chicago. Even very good deals go unanswered. I wonder if there are other online classifieds sites people use, particularly in the north Chicago area.

Explore the history of Soldier Field

Love it or hate it? Soldier Field has been at the center of Chicago's political, cultural, and sporting life since it opened in 1924. Come to a multimedia presentation documenting its history this Saturday April 19 at the Rogers Park Branch Library, 6907 N. Clark St., at 1 p.m. Liam A. T. Ford, a journalist for the Chicago Tribune, led the newspaper's reporting on the renovation of Soldier Field 2001-2003. In the process he completed his book Soldier Field: A Stadium and Its History. His presentation will show rare photos and documents unearthed in his research. The program is co-sponsored by the library and the Rogers Park/West Ridge Historical Society. The bathroom tile is a little outdated, but the size and storage more than makes up for that. The living area is carpeted and has a brand new AC unit, as well as street view. The landlord and maintenance are incredible and respond to problems within the first day of occurrence. They are managed by ASM Associates. You can call the building manager for more information. Proposed North/South bike path is too dangerous from Devon to Pratt

The proposed bike path under consideration in the 49th Ward doesn't add up, math wise. I measured Glenwood, the width of the bike path and the width of an average car and found this route to be dangerous for the biker to travel.

a) the street is 30 feet wide.

b) the bike lane is 5.5ft wide. (2X)

3) the off-set from curb to bike lane is 7.5 ft wide. (2X)

4) Average car width is about 6 feet. (2X)...

3) the off-set from curb to bike lane is 7.5 ft wide. (2X)

4) Average car width is about 6 feet. (2X)

After adding the numbers, 5.5 x 2 = 11 and 7.5 x 2 = 15, that totals 26 feet, leaving 4 feet in the middle of the road for 2 cars to pass without going in the bike lane.

And, as looking up, the average car is 6 feet wide. That means if 2 cars are passing each other, one foot of the car is going to be in each bike lane. If bikes are in the bike lane on each side of the street, they will be put into a position of being hit by a car.

And, good forbid someone who just parked decides to open there door at that very moment.

This is just way too narrow a street to be safe for biker, driver and parker.

  • Prissy L Vegetarian yoga princess

If there were more big car towers around there would be fewer cars parked on the streets and more room for safe bicycle lanes. I think bicyclists would be very supportive of building more car towers in the community.

March's Final Police Blotter, by Mark Schipper (April's Blotters to come)

Michael Tingling of the 7100 block of N. Ridge Blvd. was pronounced dead of a heart attack March 19 at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston.

This article has 14 other Chicago locations (Show)

The 20-year-old victim was attacked about 11:40 p.m. near the corner of N. Kenmore and W. Hollywood avenues. He said a man in his middle or late 40s had confronted him and claimed he had never returned a cell-phone that belonged to him, the attacker.

A mother of one of the boys accompanied them about 7:20 p.m. to 20th District police headquarters, 5400 N. Lincoln, to make the report.

The boys said they were shoved from behind while riding through an alley just south of 5600 N. Lincoln Ave. Each of their cell-phones fell out of their pockets when they hit the ground.

A woman was robbed March 17 stepping off a CTA bus near 4800 N. Broadway, CPD reported.

Tingling, 59, passed away about 2:45 p.m., less than 45 minutes after he'd been in a fist fight with a stranger on the 7100 block of N. Clark St.

That stranger turned out to be 59-year-old Joseph Firek of the 7000 block of N. Clark St. He was identified by multiple eye-witnesses as the second man in the fight. Firek, who is white, has been charged with First Degree Murder and a Hate Crime.

The 19-year-old had been attacked on the 1200 block of W. Albion Ave. about 8:20 p.m., according to CPD. He told officers he had heard fast footsteps coming from behind just before a man grabbed hold of him and his backpack.

The victim had been on the 2700 block of W. Lunt Ave. when he was surrounded. The first man approached him from the front while the second and third came from behind, he said.

The victim, 32, said she had returned about 9:30 p.m. to her apartment building on the 2400 block of W. Fitch Ave. She had seen two men standing near the back door.

The boys were walking on the 2900 block of W. Cortland Ave. when they encountered a middle-aged black male. He had pointed to a white van parked on the street and asked if they wanted to get inside.

A 10-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl were walking to school on the 1700 block of N. Larrabee St. when a gray sedan pulled alongside them. The driver had rolled down a window and said, "Come over here."

A third home on the 2100 block of Sheffield was broken into the afternoon of March 17.

Two other homes were damaged on the 2100 block of N. Fremont St. and the 800 block of W. Armitage Ave. between March 14-and-16.
