Lose Your Lizards?

Found these 2 guys in my front yard this morning, in a container in a paper bag. They were dead (it seemed), brought them in and now they have arisen. Just in time for Easter. About 4" nose to tail. No tags or chips. Are they yours? If so, wtf?

He is now ours and well taken care of. He feels safe and at home. Perhaps a pet store can take them?

Joe Moore - I volunteer to sponsor a public forum for you to discuss Ward issues with residents.

Joe – As you know, there have been lots of discussions on social media these days about the state of the Ward from the surge of recent crimes, to economic development plans for our commercial corridors, to education. There have been myriad specific questions asked of you in many threads. I respectfully request that you meet with Ward residents in a public forum to discuss ALL the issues of concern and interest to YOUR constituents. I am happy to:

1) sponsor this and make all arrangements for the location;
2) collaborate with your office (or the 49th Ward Democratic organization – EVEN Helen) to organize and publicize the event;
3) create a preparatory program agenda to insure you are prepared with data necessary to answer FAQ’s; and,
4) Moderate the session with a member of the 49th Ward Democratic Organization to insure that the forum runs with decorum and all resident questions are covered.

I believe it is appropriate to give you at least two to three weeks to prepare before such an event occurs. Will you agree to this public forum? If so, I will reach out to your office immediately and we can begin working on this. Thank you

  • Perhaps if you didn't have a history of villifying the alderman on every possible occasion (often with vicious, personal attacks, and never acknowledging that anything he does is of any worth) he might actually listen to you on this kind of request, Suzanne. It's times like this that you might realize the importance of building social and political capital, which you have simply not done. Which is unfortunate, because intelligent political opposition is an important function and this ward could use more of it.

Has anyone tried to negotiate peace between our warring factions.

Considering the human carnage left in the wake of the 15 yr old feud. Has anyone from the police, politicians or anyone else reached out to those feuding? There have Ben attempts to profit yes. The cease fire peeps and folks get involved once money is involved. Have there been other attempts?

  • Suzanne Devane Ward 49 Republican Committeeman

Darrin -- That is a very interesting piece. Thanks for sharing it. The end of the story is problematic in that it says this approach is working based on a drop in the murder rate in 2013. More recent investigations indicate that the police have been cooking the stats and reclassifying murders as something else. I'd like to know how many of these top 20s in each police district have since been arrested and face the federal charges described in this article.

  • Suzanne, the article you're citing does show that Chicago police have done some questionable reclassifying of murder stats, but the reporter's exhaustive review of the crime files found only 10 cases of homicides reclassified in 2013. Suzanne, the article you're citing does show that Chicago police have done some questionable reclassifying of murder stats, but the reporter's exhaustive review of the crime files found only 10 cases of homicides reclassified in 2013. That's compared to a total of 415 homicides reported, or around 2% of cases. That's not enough to put the broader murder rate decline into question. Furthermore, the ten reclassified homicides were all cases where the circumstances of death--drug use, disappearance, etc.--gave the reclassifiers some kind of "pretext" for their manipulations I.e., those ten cases do not cast into question the overall downward trend in street shootings, which are simply not "reclassifiable."
The decline in Chicago's murder rate (and Rogers Park's) over the last several decades is definitive, dramatic and extremely well documented; in other words, not in question.

Best eating in RP (for NewToRP)

Hi guys, since NewToRP is new to RP, and since her sisters are in town, and since she had a bad experience at Giordano's last night, thought the long time locals could help her out with suggestions on neighborhood gems!

I'll through a few out:
- Heartland Cafe (long wait for the food, but great environment and good quality)
- Grill Inn for Burgers
- Common Cup for coffee
- Twisted Tappas? Okay I confess I've not eaten there myself, but I hear only great things about it :)

What would you guys put on a list of must-eat places?

  • Mac I complain on EB on the regular.

The restaurant at mayne stage, r public house, and bullhead cantina.

  • MandaLeigh Here I Is.

Noon Hour Grill is amazing. As Steven said, it's staffed by just one older woman (cooks, waits tables, rings up tabs), so the wait can often be loooong, depending on how many patrons are there, but if you have the patience, it's well worth the wait.

The Chicago Police Department is working around the clock at an aggressive strategy to prevent a repeat of the unusual spike in gun violence that has plagued our neighborhood in the last few weeks.

I attended Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy's monthly "CompStat" accountability session for north side district commanders this morning.

Though I am not able to share the details of the specific strategies employed, rest assured that 24th District Commander Thomas Waldera (see photo below) is receiving reinforcements from other Chicago Police Department units and is employing them in a comprehensive manner to prevent another outbreak of violence. The City of Evanston is also helping by redeploying some of its police officers to Howard Street.

Commander Waldera has been out in the field late into the night directing his forces.

These efforts are bearing fruit. The police have recovered six guns, some of them fully loaded, from, from suspected gang members. The individuals possessing those guns were arrested and charged.

Police also have arrested and charged an individual suspected in the March 25th shooting of a man at Ashland and Jarvis. They believe they know the identity of the other assailant and are currently searching for him.

Police also arrested an individual they suspect of being involved in the early Tuesday morning shooting of a 16-year-old boy at Jonquil and Ashland. Unfortunately, they currently only have enough evidence to charge the individual with the unlawful possession of an automobile.

The police and my office cannot do it alone, however. We need the involvement of all community residents. I urge you to attend one of the upcoming monthly CAPS beat meetings.

For information on the time and location of the CAPS meetings and more information on the efforts of the 24th District and my office to stem the gang violence, visit;

The other residents that LIVE in these troubled buildings have to start making noise about safety/illegal activities by calling the police and submitting written complaints with specific details to the landlords or management companies. Surrounding neighbors need to do the same consistently. Not to overwhelm Ann Hinterman but collectively send her the documentation of the complaints with dates so that she is armed when meeting with the landlords/managers. The unfortunate thing is that when these types of things are going on, other people in the building are in fear of their safety so they just look the other way. Very unfortunate.

  • John Warner 12 year resident - RPPL - Beat Facilitator 2431

To help the Alderman's office out, the CAPS Beat Facilitators can take the information that the tenants have concerning the "problems" in the buildings. This way the Alderman's office won't be overwhelmed with the information. We also work with the community in this area as well.

So disgusted!

So my sisters are in town visiting....I thought it would be a great idea to take them to Giordano's on Sheridan to experience their first Chicago deep dish. Bad idea! My sister was loving her slice of deep dish pepperoni when she discovered a cooked ROACH! We were immediately mortified! The waitress grab the plates so quickly so that we couldn't take a picture, and the manager came over to apologize.... he was truly embarrassed. He kept asking "what can I do, I'm so sorry... what can I do....do you want me to make you another pizza." We said absolutely NO NO No! And left.

We didn't make a scene, but it was soooo very disgusting. Yuck!

It reminds me of how G's used to be. I've worked in restraunts and fast food places and roaches are sort of par for the course, but proper bug control and sanitation should keep them out of the food. I never experienced a roach in food in all that time, but is it plausible? Yup! it is.

Chicago police officers under the leadership of Commander Thomas Waldera responded quickly last week to several shooting incidents in Rogers Park. Commander Waldera requested and received re-enforcements from the Chicago Police Department. The Commander has been on the streets with his tactical lieutenant each night from dusk to dawn personally directing the allocation of those officers.

Thanks to their efforts, Rogers Park experienced no shooting incidents over the weekend.

Last Thursday, a 21-year-old man was shot by an unidentified man on the 1600 block Morse Avenue Thursday night at approximately 8:00 p.m., and a 25 year-old woman was shot while sitting in her car on the 6600 block of N, Sheridan Road Friday morning shortly before 2:00 a.m.

Commander Waldera tells me police believe the Morse Avenue shooting was gang-related, the latest in a series of shootings resulting from a conflict between two factions of the same street gang. Earlier in the week one man was killed and two others were injured in what police believe to be a gang-related shooting on the 1600 block of W. Howard Street.

The police are not certain whether the Sheridan shooting was the result of the same gang conflict or a separate "road rage" incident. They are still investigating.

I have been in constant communication with Commander Waldera since last Monday's shooting incident. His hands-on and proactive response to these incidents has helped to stem the violence and prevent a further escalation of the conflict.

Police will continue to be on heightened alert this week.

If you would like more information about the police response to the recent shootings or what you can do to help stem the violence, I urge you to attend one of the upcoming monthly CAPS beat meetings.

For the time place and loication of the beat meetings, visit:

http://www.ward49.com/site/epage/152025_322.htm

Commander Waldera will be present at both meetings.

Meanwhile, our finest beat police showed up to court this morning instead using his OT for being on the street tonight. He was only one of 3 officers who showed up, though the ticket was instantly dismissed because it was complete nonsense and had 3 factual errors. (520pm pulled over for no headlights, but he wrote the ticket for the wrong violation in addition to 2 other errors on the ticket. You could sense the eyes rolling in the prosecutors' head). Congrats to the CPD 24th ward on their fine use of police beat resources and overtime.

Does anyone know of a good, affordable company or individual that can do a full evaluation of a building - e.g. evaluating the roof, electrical, heating, and water systems, and overall condition of the common areas (inside and outside) of the building - not individual units? We're a relatively small condo association and we'd like to have one done and am having a hard time finding one. We've already looked on Yelp and contacted several places, either they dealt only with individual condo inspections, were not thorough enough, or didn't return phone calls. In the case of one of the most popular companies on Yelp's list, Domicile Consulting - they were very difficult to reach - by phone or through their website. Tried contacting them for months! When I finally got them, they promised to send a draft contract out and never did. Then when I tried calling them back to remind them, still never returned my calls. I would not say I'm difficult to deal with. At any rate, I would welcome any suggestions!

  • Ann - What is the purpose of the evaluation? The company/person that you seek to hire will probably vary depending on what you need. For example, do you need the building evaluated for real estate transaction purposes, fiscal planning or are there building condition issues that need to be addressed? Are you considering improving the building somehow - new windows, mechanical system, energy efficiency, etc.? Your answers will help determine the type of evaluation that is necessary and the correct professional for the evaluation.

  • Ann

    Good Questions Chad -
We want do some proactive planning because we have an older building that is in need of repairs and we want to determine the best ways to make these repairs, get cost estimates, and create a timeline for the repairs need to be made. We want, as much as possible, to avoid being caught by surprise with a huge special assessment and/or the boiler breaking down in the middle of the winter, for example.

Murder rate in Rogers Park

Rogers Park has a serious uptick in murders for 2014. Summer hasn't even arrived, and we've already matched the total for 2013. We're only four months into the calendar year.

This is on track to be the worst year for murders in 5 years. This is an issue that should be front and center. Not swept under a rug.

Yet, Alderman Joe Moore is more concerned about Divvy.

http://www.redeyechicago.com/news/local/redeye-graphic-rogers-park-homicide-report-20140416,0,3004314.htmlpage

  • robin in WRP Tired, very tired

Alderman Moore - thank you for the giggle! Warning, you may wind up as the latest in Mr. Gernhardt's mute attacks.

  • I'm concerned by what I perceive as increased violence in the neighborhood... but it's kind of foolish to take exceptional numbers at a certain point in time and claim we're "on track" for anything for the year, as if there's a constant background and there's no way to significantly influence future events. I think the messenger is undermining his own message even before he gets to his obligatory alderman-bashing- which is too bad because the topic of 'how are we going to address this violence' is important.

Cribbage anyone?

Meetup.com is remarkably devoid of any cribbage group/get together, so I thought I'd see if there are any RP folk interested in getting together, perhaps for a regular session?

  • 15-2, 15-4, and a pair is 6! Cribbage is pure poetry. I have so little free time and probably shouldn't add more to the list but I just want to say how happy I am that you're proposing a cribbage meet-up! I grew up in a rural Wisconsin tavern and spent many hours at the end if a bar challenging the old timers in cribbage. Such an awesome game.

If not you need to, Oak Street Health is a very unique company taking on improving Older adults health by offering services that you won't find in many doctors offices. First they offer rides for seniors and as you can remember with all the crazy winter weather we had it was extremely difficult to get to your doctors appointments if you rely on the CTA to get around. Oak Street Health patients enjoyed being picked up and dropped off for their appointments. They also have a community room that all patients can come and enjoy anytime even if they just want to hangout and have coffee with friends. Plus they are able to enjoy many of the programs happening in the community room such as workouts, presentation on diabetes and other health related issues. I hope you really take a look at it if you or someone you know is a senior who is on Medicare.

So please be very conscious and be careful walking alone. I only know it was three men 2 white 1 black and in there twenty's.

Vacuum Repair?

I'm looking for a repairman that fixes Bissell and Eureka - got a broken belt. Any recommendations?

  • Belts are a easy fix for sure, as long as the correct part is bought. I understand that it can be tedious but all it takes is patienced because of the tension of the belt. If you need any help you can text me at 773-474-6019 I can pick them up and do it for you.

The cost of the belt and service call is adjacent to the cost of a new unit. Last week I purchased a new Bissell from Target for $89.00 and it work great. Plus, I have a 12 month manufacturers warranty. My point being, have you considered replacing your unit?

Awesome Food at Twisted Tapas

I know it's been plugged here before, but this place can't get enough praise! Twisted Tapas at Pratt & Sheridan (just east of Sheridan) is absolutely awesome. Non-traditional, creative food served in tapas portions at super affordable prices. You can have a half dozen taste experiences in one sitting. It's a great place to take a group of friends.

Great experience, and their staff is friendly and awesome. Check it out if you haven't already!

  • Al I. Rogers Park since 2006

The boulevard is wider than usual in front of their place and has trees and shrubs in it, and a taller than usual fence around it. Thus it shrinks the usable sidewalk area significantly. If you took all that out and paved it, they could have a wonderful patio. I don't see that happening, though. However, on nice summer nights, they can have their giant windows open, and you get a nice breeze inside. I really love that space in the summer.

  • Helen North of Howard for 50 + years

Al, I'd forgotten about those windows. I hadn't been in there in the summer for a long time because I didn't care for the two previous restaurants in that space, but I seem to recall that Cafe Suron, the Persian restaurant I loved, would open them in the summer.

Termite contracts and Terminix

Big question about the need for a termite contract and feedback about Terminix in particular: When we bought our house five or so years ago, it came with a Terminix contract. There was no termite activity but were told (by Terminix) how necessary it was to keep it up; in case of recurrence we had a warranty and wouldn't pay for treatment.

The contract , which is up for renewal, isn't cheap. Can anyone comment and advise on the need for the contract and an average renewal fee that seems reasonable? Or send me to a site/person who knows about this stuff and can help navigate the process?

  • Yay! Thanks for that Darrin. I do have 6 years of Terminix's "certifications" which I'll keep. By the follow-up visit before closing, did that come from the same company you used to treat the termites, or elsewhere? Do you know anything about WDI inspections? These are independent inspectors who will conform no activity. Cost under $200. I just want to make sure that in the event we do sell it won't be an issue.
    Thanks again!

  • Darrin Greenview Terrace Association Member

I had it from the same company that had done the treatment. I also documented where I had repairs done. I haven't heard of a WDI inspection but for $200 I would be all for it... better than losing a deal!

We've used Movetastic as well as Joey's Movers in Skokie - both were great and really put effort into getting the move done quickly which we appreciated!

  • I tipped $50 per mover (hired professionals with insurance), but that's because I moved from the third floor of a 3-story walkup and they had to hoist my sofa and elliptical down the outer side of the outside stairwell this winter. I would think that $20 per crew member would be fine.

Multiple TIRES Flattened/Slashed on North Eastlake Terrace

I was walking my dogs in Juneway Terrace Park on the lakefront this morning and I noticed a car with a jack stand stuck under the frame, next to the flat tire. "The owner must of given up trying to lift the car?" I thought. Then I noticed on the another flat tire. Then ANOTHER. There must of been about 8 CARS with flat tires on the east side of North Eastlake Terrace. Pretty blatant vandalism, targeting that side of the street.

MY car was NOT parked there, so I am not a direct victim. Still upsetting. I tried calling 311 and the rang and rang with no answer...

  • Not pothole related. They were deliberately slashed!

  • Roxanne psychotherapist, gardner. 39 yr. resident of RP.

For this I would call "911" never "311". This is a police issue. Let them figure out what really happened to these cars. I think we need to call "911" more often in light of what is being reported that is happening lately in our beloved Rogers Park. I, for one, don't want a "long hot summer" here. Period. I am saddened to hear of what happened in your neighborhood.

Jonquil peace

Cpd did an awesome job dispersing an all too familiar crowd on Jonquil at about 1am. Unfortunately, one particularly alley has become a loitering spot where cars race up and down making exchanges with those around the area. A certain group kept coming back (repeatedly!!) making violent threats to someone inside the building, but cpd made it's presence known and we finally had some quiet... I often see suspicious activity around the alley. Not wanting to waste the cops time,...

A certain group kept coming back (repeatedly!!) making violent threats to someone inside the building, but cpd made it's presence known and we finally had some quiet... I often see suspicious activity around the alley. Not wanting to waste the cops time, I only report certainties -- yet I truly appreciated their efforts on this one.

Has anyone else noticed the alley near the Willie B White park at night? These are not teens just hanging out...I see cops drive by all the time and the group just waits till they pass and then continues their activities.

Thank you!!

  • Evict everyone residing at the Jonquil / Ashland building ?

Repopulate the building with SENIOR Citizens ?

.....They are usually not the THUG type.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Broadcast Lawrence Welk music to the block ?

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Make HELEN ( N of H ) the building manager ?

.....She would get good behavior out of the tenants.

  • I don't know-- I've met some pretty mean senior citizens before... Maybe the IRS could do a "random" (wink) audit of all suspected thugs. Even if we can sentence them all, at least they'll be preoccupied for some time. Do you think they all filed their tax returns on time?

Is the 40th Ward doing participatory budgeting?

So I'm reading all these articles about the participatory budgeting process in nearby wards -- some are holding votes, some conducting online surveys, some holding public meetings -- and I'm realizing that I've never heard a single word about PB from Ald. Patrick O'Connor, who ganked my Lincoln Square block in the redistricting. Is O'Connor even doing PB in the 40th?

  • Sheila Pacione Neighbor

I live there and have never noticed meetings for it. You could start a dialogue with them by emailing ward40@cityofchicago.org or patrick.o'connor@cityofchicago.org.

Classifieds?

I'm having trouble getting responses to furniture ads I post on Craigslist in Chicago. Even very good deals go unanswered. I wonder if there are other online classifieds sites people use, particularly in the north Chicago area.

How pedestrian of you, Dustin. Actually, either spelling may be used for the colour between black and white; both are accurate. (You'd best be careful or I'll begin sprinkling that "u" in in other comments.)

Of course! It's at the corner of Sheridan and Pratt. It's a spacious studio with new cabinets and new tile. The bathroom tile is a little outdated, but the size and storage more than makes up for that. The living area is carpeted and has a brand new AC unit, as well as street view. The landlord and maintenance are incredible and respond to problems within the first day of occurrence. They are managed by ASM Associates. You can call the building manager for more information. Her name is Naomi. Good luck!

Proposed North/South bike path is too dangerous from Devon to Pratt

The proposed bike path under consideration in the 49th Ward doesn't add up, math wise. I measured Glenwood, the width of the bike path and the width of an average car and found this route to be dangerous for the biker to travel.

a) the street is 30 feet wide.

b) the bike lane is 5.5ft wide. (2X)

3) the off-set from curb to bike lane is 7.5 ft wide. (2X)

4) Average car width is about 6 feet. (2X)...

4) Average car width is about 6 feet. (2X)

After adding the numbers, 5.5 x 2 = 11 and 7.5 x 2 = 15, that totals 26 feet, leaving 4 feet in the middle of the road for 2 cars to pass without going in the bike lane.

And, as looking up, the average car is 6 feet wide. That means if 2 cars are passing each other, one foot of the car is going to be in each bike lane. If bikes are in the bike lane on each side of the street, they will be put into a position of being hit by a car.

And, good forbid someone who just parked decides to open there door at that very moment.

This is just way too narrow a street to be safe for biker, driver and parker.

If there were more big car towers around there would be fewer cars parked on the streets and more room for safe bicycle lanes. I think bicyclists would be very supportive of building more car towers in the community.

Prissy; Great idea!! I don't think I've seen them in Chicago.?.? only in NYC, but hopefully it will catch on.

Mariano's is hopping(?)

Anyone know why Mariano's rooftop parking lot is full today? It may be staff preparing for the opening - but if so, I sure hope their employees don't drive to work (or park somewhere else). The lot is literally packed!

  • chrisfinn bornagain chicagoan

And the Doms on B'way closed at the same time as the one @Sheridan & Foster but is already opening this coming week. Strange that WF is doing nothing at that one except put paper on the windows & needs over a year to get it ready.

  • ScottK Near Glenwood/Devon in North Edgewater

Looking forward to using the 151 again, almost door to door, to discover Mariano's. I really miss the Dominick's and will be glad to shop at that location again.
