Making whine with sour grapes

After a defeat, Most politicians try and send a message to their supporters that they should try to work with their opponent for the betterment of all. And then there is Don Gordon's message -

"The residents of Rogers Park who put Alderman Moore back in the council for another 4 years simply don't get it or prefer stick their collective heads in the sand..."
https://www.facebook.com/groups/Gordon2015/permalink/780917585317984/

Well, at least he isn't trying to disenfranchise half of the ward this time... he's just insulting 66% of them.

Way to move the neighborhood forward Don!

  • I guess that's your prerogative. Do what you gotta do.

  • Helen NoH North of Howard for 50 + years

RP Election Ennui

Yesterday's election numbers are interesting. Terrible turn-out overall throughout the City. The cold probably had something to do with it, but I think it was also a sense that people just aren't very supportive of the candidates who are/were running. I do believe that if "none of the above" was an option in the mayoral race, that would have garnered more than 50%!!

Anyhow, in our Ward, here are the numbers:

Yesterday's election numbers are interesting. Terrible turn-out overall throughout the City. The cold probably had something to do with it, but I think it was also a sense that people just aren't very supportive of the candidates who are/were running. I do believe that if "none of the above" was an option in the mayoral race, that would have garnered more than 50%!!

Anyhow, in our Ward, here are the numbers:

1) We have 25,105 registered voters.
2) 8,380 voted yesterday (33.38%).
3) 5,566 voted for Joe (giving him 66.42% of the vote), but only 22.17% of registered voters bothered to vote for him.
4) 2,814 voted for Don (giving him 33.58% of the vote), but only 11.21% of registered voters bothered voting for him.

So, what does RP want in an alderman? Let's describe the experience and qualities we seek in an alderman in this Ward. (Let's try REALLY hard NOT to use this as a chance to bash Joe and/or Don, but instead, design our ideal candidate!)

I'll start the list with the following:
1) Someone willing to lead by talking about the seriousness of the fiscal problems facing the City and that none of the ways to address them will be pleasant (think chemo).
2) Someone who prioritizes education based on what is good for the kids and not what is good for the adults.

Let's keep the list going!!

Winter is very dangerous for them so they need shelter and warm cloths.

I just learned the word is out from Springfield that massive budget cuts proposed by IL's new guv will severely impact social services (always conservatives' favorite target). This worries me from a general standpoint as an IL resident, but also from a personal one because my young adult son is disabled and he's housed in a special facility in the suburbs to provide a long-term supportive living environment for the disabled. If these budget cuts are approved, we've learned the program that funds our son's living and work facilities will lose over $800K from its operating budget.

We are pretty freaked. These programs and others like them around the State are absolutely essential to the population they serve, and yet they have suffered continual, deep budget cuts throughout the years. They are struggling to meet the many expenses of providing their services as it is. If they lose this money, we have no idea how they can stay open. If they close, where will its fragile and vulnerable population go? There must be a better way to balance IL's budget than robbing disadvantaged people.

The only chance is to put enough pressure on the State reps to veto Mr. Rauner's proposal. Anyone who could write letters of protest to their elected officials, we would be so grateful. Also, can anyone tell me to whom shall we address our letters? Who are the ones that serve our community? Thanks!

  • FebGirl Once a bride, but never a bridesmaid

P.S./ I'm all in favor of bringing new businesses to Illinois to create jobs and stimulate the stagnant economy. Fine! Bring them on! I don't knock it. I'm spitting mad Congress refuses to approve transferring those in detention at Guantanamo, which has to be closed, to a new, now empty prison a little downstate from Chicago's metro area. It would be perfect, and think of the jobs it would mean. How can our federal gov't refuse to accept such a win-win solution?

Anyone see the person who hit my car?

Hi all, I really hate posting negative things, but this morning we went out to our car parked on Lunt near one of the fire hydrants (legally) and next to an alley to find that someone had slammed into our front driver side bumper and cracked it significantly. They must have it it pretty hard to crack it (a piece was missing), and of course no note was left. We use our car for our catering jobs and having it damaged like that does not look good. If anyone has any information, or saw anything (or if you are the one who hit us...no questions asked, just please come forward), I would really appreciate it!

Time has come to talk of many things. Gordon vowed to not lie about or attack any of his opponents... did he stick to his promise? Did Don file all of his in-kind donations appropriately? Did he know that using space at restaurants for events and experienced individuals for training are in-kind donations that should be reported responsibly? It's time to account and be honest. We are listening for a reply. Will you keep your pledge to support a Rogers Park Chamber of Comics? We need more fun.

Good-bye, MorWay

All but one business in the strip mall at Morse and Wayne has closed shop for good. Word on the street is Jennifer Pritzker bought it. The lone holdout is Vic's Pharmacy, who has allegedly gone to court - and was granted to stay until May 2015.

One can only speculate as to how big of a parking garage will be built in it's place?

One can also speculate as to how long it will be before Ms. Pritzker buy's out JB's Pizza?

Don Gordon is a good man, and most importantly, he is a true independent and he has run his campaign without "Joenation$". That's right, no donations.
And that means no favors asked or granted.

I'm sure Donut-Joe has a few good qualities. But he is a long time pontificator who likes to feed voters on Election Day. We don't need that. We need a community activist who wants safe streets, good streets and less pot holes. We need an Alderman on the City Council who isn't in the mayor's back pocket. We want and need an honest man who doesn't owe developers and Mayors. We need term limits and that is spelled GORDON.

NO MORE JOE!

VOTE GORDON TOMORROW, FEBRUARY 24, 2015

Believe me, please... If Joe Moore gets re-elected, little will change, other than Joe's ability to get MOORE out of his backers.

VOTE GORDON! VOTE HONEST! VOTE GORDON!

Hey, it's simple. Joe Moore won again. Gordon lost again. Same old same old. Moore won the people's vote and Gordon lost. No big deal. Gordon lost again. Dance. Be happy. Eat lots of chili on Sunday. Toot bean gas on Monday.

Can civility return to Every Block ?

With 97 % of the aldermanic vote counted,
it appears that Alderman Joe Moore has been re-elected.

Congratulations to both him and Don Gordon.

I firmly believe that each of them wants the best for Rogers Park.

Now is the time for them ( and their supporters ) to close ranks and
unite their efforts to make this a better place to live.

Political campaigns often hurt peoples' feelings.

If something was said that upset you, try to forget it.

There is a lot to be done, and everybody has to be a part of it.

Please be a positive force in the future of ROGERS PARK.

The votes were cast and the results are in. I am honored to have received two-thirds (66%) of the votes cast in yesterday's aldermanic election. I appreciate the confidence you have vested in me, and will continue to work hard to earn your support.

Elections are about accountability. They are an opportunity for the voters to hold their elected officials' feet to the fire. I appreciated the opportunity to defend my record and offer my vision for the future of our wonderful neighborhood. As I said throughout the campaign, our neighborhood is stronger working together, and though we may occasionally disagree on the means to achieve our goal for a better Rogers Park, we should never let those disagreements become personal and irreconcilable.

I congratulate Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Cook County Commissioner Jesus "Chuy" Garcia on making it to the second round in the mayoral election. The 49th Ward voters were split down the middle between Mayor Emanuel and Commissioner Garcia, with each receiving 44% of the vote in the ward.

Whomever is elected Mayor in April will lead a city faced with monumental challenges for which there are no easy solutions. The two candidates must avoid platitudes and level with the voters about the painful choices that must be made. Our city is also stronger working together, and I will work with whomever is the next Mayor to take on these challenges and make sure that Chicago becomes a city that works for everyone.

After taking the day off today, my staff and I will be back tomorrow working tirelessly for you and the neighborhood and city we love.

Thank you for honoring me with another four years.

Don't forget to .........

Please begin to remove ALL election posters.

.....I assume that most of them can go to your BLUE BIN.

Let's get back to " normal ".

  • It would be nice to hear the candidates who actually own and disperse these signs encourage people to remove them. Is that asking too much?

  • Mei

I'm curious if Rahm and Moore got CPS permission to post signs on school property on Morse.

The elephant in the room...

Neither the incumbents nor the challengers in the upcoming are taking a position on the frigid weather. My votes will go to those who can spike the mercury.

RSBro, do you vote in pct. 1? There was one write-in for alderman though since there were no declared write-in candidates, we'll never know who that person wrote in.

Community co-working space

Hello neighbors - I'm interested in opening and sharing a co-working space. There'd be space for private offices and common office space. Any interest from local professionals?

  • Al I. Not Defender of Cartoon Cows

There was one last year on Morse, it came and went pretty quickly. It's possible to perhaps put some of the blame for failure on the operators, but truly, I think the need just wasn't there. The few times I used it, I tended to be the only person there.

I probably wouldn't utilize a new coworking space if one appeared.

  • The Bezazian Branch Library in Uptown (1226 W. Ainslie) will be opening a small co-working space called The Shift in the next few weeks. Call 312-744-0019 got more info.

  • Edgewater Nora Agrees with Pink. Founder, Arka Pana Consulting.

The Shift is not associated with the Library. I like working out of there, you can find there website here: http://www.theshiftchicago.com/

I've heard rumors about a co-working space opening up in Edgewater near Broadway and Bryn Mawr.

Al, can you elaborate on the co-working space that was on Morse? What did you like/not like about it?
