Comcast out again

For the umpteenth time, Comcast is out again--this time both cable and Internet. But it should be back by "12:52 a.m." How amazingly precise for an outfit that can't furnish a utility reliably. How big an area is out?

I think its time we had a woman run for mayor.

  • uhm this life long Chicagoan is wondering why it matters if Krissy is a native Chicagoan? Hell at least she is expressing interest in who is running our city. Unlike the majority of native Chicagoans who either do not vote or vote for the same person over and over no matter what - they could be arrested, dead or clearly a crook - but if they are up for re election here they still have job security. I say we need more Chicagoans like Krissy.

Street Sweeping Season Begins Wednesday--Schedule for April 1 through May 18 Posted

Street sweeping season begins officially Wednesday, April 1st. Though the 49th Ward street sweeper is already out cleaning the streets as weather permits, today marks the first day this year that the city will post the bright orange "no parking" street sweeping signs on residential streets.

Street sweeping season begins officially Wednesday, April 1st. Though the 49th Ward street sweeper is already out cleaning the streets as weather permits, today marks the first day this year that the city will post the bright orange "no parking" street sweeping signs on residential streets.

To view a map of the 49th Ward street sweeping areas and a schedule for April 1st through May 18th, visit:

http://www.ward49.com/street-sweeping/.

Each residential street in the 49th Ward is swept approximately once a month. Residential street sweeping this year will continue until the end of November.

PLEASE NOTE: STREET SWEEPING WILL BE CARRIED OUT UNDER THE OLD WARD BOUNDARIES UNTIL MAY 18TH.

Following the start of the new city council term on Monday, May 18th, street sweeping will switch to the new ward boundaries. I will publish the schedule for May 19th through the end of November as soon as it becomes available.

Special note for those who live in the portion of the new 49th Ward that was once in the 40th Ward: Your streets will be swept by the 40th Ward on April 1st 2nd, 3rd and 6th. For the precise days your street will be swept, visit Alderman Patrick O'Connor's web site at

http://www.aldermanoconnor.com/street-sweeping/2014-street-sweeping-schedule-for-40th-ward/

Also please note, our commercial streets, and Ravenswood and Glenwood along the CTA and Metra embankments, are posted with permanent street cleaning signs and swept once or twice a week.

How can you help? Remind your neighbors to move their cars on street sweeping days. Refrain from blowing or raking leaves or other debris into the streets. Pick up litter along the curb rather than leaving it for the street sweepers. Our street sweeper vehicles are slowed down by large volumes of leaves and litter. The more cooperation we have from community residents, the more effectively we can sweep your street.

COMPETING AGAINST THE WORLD:
CMSA’S ROBOTICS TEAM ADVANCES TO FTC WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Chicago, IL - (March 30, 2015) – For the first time in its robotics program history, Chicago Math and Science Academy’s high school robotics team, RoboTitans Team #7006, will compete in FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) World Championship April 22-25, 2015 in St. Louis. The RoboTitans are one of 5 teams from Illinois, and the only public charter school, advancing to this prestigious competition.

The World Championship is the final FCT tournament of the season. 128 teams from around the world will compete in St. Louis for the honor of being the world’s best. In addition to moving forward to the World Championship the RoboTitans also received the 3rd place Motivate Award at the North Regional Super Regional Championship this past weekend in Iowa.

“To say we are proud of this team of freshman is an understatement. Their efforts and hard work have placed CMSA on the world stage for the first time. It is the icing on the cake coming off a very successful season which earned CMSA 10 trophies”, states Principal Aydin Kara. “We are very grateful to the coaches and mentors for the countless hours with these students to help prepare them for this honor.”

Students involved in FTC learn to apply real-world math and science concepts, develop program-solving, organizational and team building-skills, and are eligible for millions of dollars of scholarship funding. CMSA has a consistent track record in robotics achievements and regularly hosts FTC and FLL qualifiers at its campus. Teams, including coaches, mentors and volunteers, are required to develop strategy and build robots based on sound engineering principles. Awards are given for the competition as well as for community outreach, design, and other real-world accomplishments.

CMSA is managed by Concept Schools, a Chicago-based, not-for-profit charter school management company with 30 charter schools in the Midwest region.

Ald Joe Moore & Rahm Emanuel - Racially Insensitive & Out of touch

Late last week flyers declaring, 'Free Chicken wings for Early votes for Rahm' were circulated in Roger's Park. Below is Maryann Ahern's tweet's about said flyer.

Many journalists & politicos agree that the African-American vote is going to be decisive in this election. Some African-American leaders I know in Rogers Park thought it was racially insensitive to court their vote by offering free chicken wings. One even said, 'God D***, did Joe have watermelon there too?'

New visualization tool from Chicago Tribune about Rahm Emanuel's donors

The Chicago Tribune just published a fascinating visualization tool that allows you to see lots of Mayor Emanuel's donors and what benefits their companies received. It's a mind-boggling network of pay-to-play.

People keep talking about Rahm Emanuel's financial savvy -- they are right. He's just using his considerable skills to enrich his donors, rather than being a PUBLIC SERVANT, which implies having the good of the public in mind.

There is no real recipe or authentic blend that is true Garam Masala.

Best place for Oil Change

Hey WRP,
I am in desperate need of an oil change (procrastination on my part). I usually just go to the Marathon gas station on Touhy/Western but I'm wondering if there is a better/cheaper place to go to? Anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks much!

  • Jiffy Lube on Touhy/Western does a decent job for just oil. I usually don't get anything else done there but oil changes, though they'll recommend changing every other fluid under the sun on a regular basis.

  • I doubt it's cheaper, but I really like Speedline at 5250 N. Damen. No appointment needed.

  • Essam Your Neighbor

Toyota dealership on Broadway and Bryn Mawr will do a full oil change for cheaper than Jiffy and wash your car!

Rent Parking from Field School?

Hello All

I have a question about a parking ticket I received. Just east of Sheridan Rd, on Pratt (and some other blocks) there are signs posted that state "3-hour parking 9am-9pm".

I received a ticket dated 11/12/2014 at 10:15PM - which means AFTER 9pm. In the description, it states "more than 3 hours since 4:03pm".

However - on the back of the ticket, it states the following is grounds for contesting a violation: "The illegal vehicle condition did not exist at the time of the compliance violation."

It seems to me that since the ticket was written at 10:15PM, there were NO parking restrictions at that time and therefore there was no illegal vehicle condition, so I should be good to contest. Thoughts on this?

My other question is that the sign is slight confusing since there are no days of the week listed on there....does this mean the parking restrictions are also in place for Saturday and Sunday as well?

I have heard a lot of people have complained about these signs to the alderman's office, and a police officer even took down one of the signs (but not all of them). Any input on this?

Thanks!

Hello everyone....I just wanted to follow up on this post and let you know what happened. I contested the ticket by mail, stating that "the illegal vehicle condition did not exist at the time of the compliance violation", which was listed as grounds for contesting a violation. As a recap, I was given a "more than 3 hours" parking ticket at 10:15pm in a zone where the parking restrictions were from 9am-9pm (meaning there was no violation at 10:15pm, when the ticket was written). The only evidence I submitted was a photograph of the parking sign.

I just received a letter stating that "it is the finding of the Administrative Law Judge that the information submitted supports a determination that the violation did not occur" and I am not responsible for the fine.

Bottom line: they are NOT allowed to issue tickets after the parking restriction time is over.

I hope this will help someone in the future!

    Thanks for all your input.

Parking Problems

Found out today that I do not qualify to receive a truck parking permit because I don't live here, but only work here 45-55 hours a week. I have a pickup truck. Thats it. I'm so frustrated by this.

  • I'd be seriously thinking about selling the pickup and getting a different vehicle.

  • Peter Sifnotis West Ridge Gadfly

Right, but the point is that in a city that claims to be concerned with the working class, its policies disproportionately impact the poor. I am able to afford a $1200, 21-year-old truck. I shouldn't have to buy a more expensive car to skirt the backwards vehicle sticker pricing. At least the truck permit is free. But still, this doesn't help those who work in the city but live in the suburbs.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel opens big lead on mayoral challenger Jesus 'Chuy' Garcia

Today's Tribune poll finds Rahm with the support of 58% of likely voters and Chuy at 30%.

Some interesting tidbits from the poll:

"Asked which candidate was more 'in touch' with people like themselves, 40 percent said Emanuel while 36 percent said Garcia. Another 10 percent said neither mayoral contender and 3 percent said both."

"[T]he poll found Garcia trails Emanuel among union households, with the mayor at 47 percent to 39 percent for Garcia."

"The latest poll found 46 percent of public school parents backing Emanuel compared with 40 percent for Garcia."

It's looking more and more like Chuy is going to end up in the same Chicago Hall of No Fame as Michael Bilandic, Dock Walls and Lar "America First" Daly. No doubt the CTU leadership will blame Chuy instead of taking the blame themselves for having made a very bad decision. I think they would have had a better chance had they backed Fioretti although they still would have lost. Chicago just isn't ready for a bleach blonde Mayor.

Today our Pre-K through 1st grade students had a great time meeting the Easter Bunny and Hinton for Easter eggs. There were plenty of smiles!

robin, Eretz Israel was defined as a "Jewish (religious) State" on May 14, 1948 (5 Iyyar 5708). Therefore Israel is a religious institution organized on the basis of a parliamentary democracy unlike the Roman Catholic Vatican City State, another religious corporation, which is an absolute monarchy (in technical terms). By international definition, Israel is a religious state or a religious institution. Since Israel is a religious corporation operating on a quasi-governmental basis, should the United States government support it to the tune of billions of dollars per year? The United States doesn't give foreign aid to The Holy See. The Easter egg roll on the south lawn of the White House is chump change in comparison. But the White House Passover Seder is pretty expensive. Braised brisket and seared salmon doesn't come cheap these days. Should the Obamas pay for it out of their own pocket? Or should they host it at the Mayflower Hotel instead of in the White House on federal property?

No one can deny the progressive record that Bob Fioretti had as an Alderman. A record most other Alderman would fear even thinking about. It was that record of working with progressive groups, experience on the city council, and sponsoring legislation that drew myself and others to Bob.

I can't speak on why he ended up endorsing Rahm, yet I feel it is akin to a strawman arguement.

With that said, I am not happy at all with his current decision, but not going to linger around on it. Countless former Fioretti supporters have already long been supporting and working to elect Chuy, remove Rahm, and reclaim Chicago. Alderman Scott Waguespack (32nd Ward) has come out strongly endorsing Chuy as well.

It is not an anybody but Rahm thing. The candidates I supported each had exemplary track records in fighting for reform and change in in their respective spheres from Karen Lewis to Bob Fioretti to now Jesus "Chuy" Garcia.

There is information about Chuy that would never fit in an Everyblock post. I suggest you check out his website and social media for his agenda, activities, and see the type of trustable individuals involved in the groundswell of support. He has more of a financial plan for the future of this city than Rahm and his paid media want us to think.

Rahm has been terrible for Chicago. Broken promises, wrong priorities. A Mayor who works for hedge funds, banks, and corporations and looks to Hollywood for support. We have a chance to make Chicago once again work for its hard working taxpayers and families. Chuy has a record of focusing on the needs of communities, has indeed been a coalition builder (not saying that as a cliche) and has displayed those efforts throughout his career as a City, State, and County elected official and leader of what is now one of the strongest non-profits in Illinois.

Shots Fired: 3:30am Sunday Morning

Good morning, everyone! Just wanted to see if anyone heard or knew anything about the shots fired this morning around 3:30am near the 1600 block of Morse/Lunt. My girlfriend and I heard 2-3 shots that sounded like they were directly underneath our window. Called 911 and we never heard sirens so I don't think anyone was injured. Anyone know anything?
Thanks and have a great Sunday!

hmm... fireworks in March. OK. then we ask, when will CPD start taking fireworks seriously?

  • Thanks, Mike! That link is super helpful. I guess M-80s make sense because it was so flippin' loud. Crazy to see how the sound carried. Thanks for the info! Still gave us a good scare, but glad to know what heard was likely some jerks setting off fireworks at 3:30am and not shooting each other.

Police activity on Morse

There's a lot of police activity on Morse near the old Morseland, and what looked like a couple of arrests. Does anyone know what happened?

  • If I made a mistake then of course I apologize. I'm new to this site and don't quite have the hang of "responding". All I know is I get a lot of emails on the subject.
Understand, a LOT of flack here about whos at fault. In the end they both are.
Yes Audi started it but Camrys reaction was horrifying.
They both had time to calm down and regroup but they both opted for the next level.

Congratulations. It's unfortunate that the Chicago Park District does not publicize good news like this. It's not even listed in the News section of the Park District's home page on the web. They have not even publicized Governor Rauner's freezing of State grants that will affect a total of 27 Chicago projects at 25 parks across Chicago which stand to lose $28 million for scheduled improvements. “The Governor talks about a shared sacrifice, but his budget and decisions to freeze previously awarded grants ask the children and families of Chicago to do all of the sacrificing,” said Mayor Emanuel.

Shocking Video Shows Road Rage Battle on Chicago Street

This incident occurred on Morse Ave near IMoveChicago.

ROGERS PARK — With a nearby surveillance camera recording it all, two feuding drivers launched into a violent and extended battle on a Rogers Park street last week, with one driver repeatedly ramming the other's car while the second man delivered wild jump kicks and punches, according to police and the video.

For more than six minutes, the drivers went at it as bystanders — including a young girl on a scooter — looked on, according to the video obtained by DNAinfo Chicago. (more at link)

d3, as a former insurance agent, I just want to quickly say that when someone is involved in an accident for which they are not at fault, they don't suffer any repercussions in the form of inreased premiums. Even if you change insurance companies, the accident is reported to your motor vehicle report as being "not at fault" and you will not be charged a higher premium for that. Also, you really don't need anything more than the the other person's insurance info when involved in an accident. You don't need their registration info or their VIN. The insurance companies have all that already.

Who ever established that the Alderman has no idea of how much money was spent in the ward? Or is that just another one of your baseless speculations that you oddly assert as being truth? I hope the Alderman doesn't waste our tax money and his time doing your homework for you. Besides, it's Palm Sunday. Is this just some sort of purgatory where insane people argue about politics?

I don't get it. It's the same argument over and over and over and...well you get it. How about using this site to find out about local happenings and lost pets and stuff? Why does every post end up in some argument about the alderman or the mayor? I seen a couple good arguments that were productive but the majority is just a bunch of insane and repetitive drivel. Come on folks.
