    Elmhurst restaurateur Jack Island will be honored as the 2017 inductee into the Elmhurst Chamber of Commerce & Industry Civic Hall of Fame. Island will become the Hall of Fame's 26th member during an induction ceremony at the chamber's 99th Annual Awards Gala and 100th Birthday Bash from 5 to 9 p.m.

Father sentenced to 40 years in death of his 22-month-old son in Gary

Dillon and Selena Strong, 29, were arrested after police found their son, Brandon Dillard, dead Sept. 30, 2014, on an air mattress in a Gary apartment in the 300 block of West 6th Avenue with a V-shaped head wound and signs of abuse, court records show.

    No one, including his father, made a statement before a judge issued a sentence Wednesday in the 2014 death of a 22-month-old boy beaten and neglected in Gary. Bernard Dillon, 40, was sentenced to 40 years in prison after pleading guilty to neglect of a dependent resulting in death last month in an agreement with prosecutors.
