Homeless woman at 51st St. and Lake Park Ave.

Does anyone know what happened to Christine, the woman who has been living under the Metra at 51st St. and Lake Park? A friend rode by on his bike last Fri. and saw the police there. Someone in the crowd told him she died?

  • A tweet from Alderman Burns, I believe about the person in question...

Hyde Park Thank State Representative Curry for Limiting Your Transportation Options

Several weeks ago the Illinois House of Representatives voted on HB 4075. The bill was bought and paid for by the taxi and commercial auto insurance industry and would place draconian regulations on the ridesharing industry Areas such as Hyde Park, which is designated by the City of Chicago, as an underserved community by the taxi industry, has residents who regularly use ridesharing companies Uber,Lyft, and Sidecar for critical transportation needs. Although her constituents use these services State Rep Barbara Curry supported the bill that would limit ridesharing in Chicago while protecting the taxi industry.

The taxi industry as-is doesn't serve Hyde Park or the South Side more generally very well at all. Shame on Barbara for not supporting companies trying to better connect and integrate this part of the city with downtown and neighborhoods beyond downtown.

We need companies like Uber, Lyft, and Sidecar to remedy some of the transportation inequities produced by industry-friendly taxi regulation and the lack of safe, easy connections to rail to and from Hyde Park. It's not just that we, as residents, need good options to travel to other parts of the city; we also need to attract more people from outside Hyde Park into the neighborhood, so that the many new businesses being established all around us can benefit from (read: survive because of) a large, stable, and sufficiently wealthy market for their goods and services, even when school is out of session.

We need to make our collective voice heard on this, with our words, our feet, our dollars, and our votes.

  • Happy making better choices

As a person who recently tried to get a cab with a company that is contracted to give rides for a businesses customers, I had a few no shows after over an hour of calls, I can see how ride sharing is a great option for many in this area and further south. Of course there needs to be regulations as they are providing a service to the public.

I was told my cab had arrived 3 times but I was standing right there and nothing. I was blatantly lied to and almost missed my appoint which was a 15 min drive away. Service is horrible bc there is no perceived competition so the cabs can do whatever they want. If they provided consistent, timely, pleasant service, cabs would have no worries. When you do your job well, competition is nothing but a joke. Competition can ruin you when you don't do your job well.

Hyde Park’s Vue53 moving forward

From yochicago.com:

McHugh Construction, the general contractor for Vue53, announced on its Facebook page that it will be hosting an outreach event on Thursday, April 24, for qualified union subcontractors interested in working on the development.

Additional signs that Vue53 is progressing include the dismissal of a lawsuit aimed at stopping construction of the project, and the recent demolition of the Mobil gas station on the site. Opponents of the project plan to appeal the adverse decision.

Vue53 is targeting completion in the fall of 2015. The development includes 267 apartments and ground-floor retail space.

Haircut!

Just moved to Hyde Park and I'm in need of a barber. Internet is steering my towards Hyde Park Hair Salon or Hyde Park Barber Studio. Any thoughts on these two places or maybe someone knows of another place? Looking for a fade. I'm asian and have asian hair.

  • lisadee Ten Plus Year Hyde Park Resident

I would recommend going to Denise at Hair Design International (they're on 57th, near Kinko's). She's great, quick and courteous. Also, her clientele is a mix of everyone from all walks of life!

  • And if Denise at Hair Design International is unavailable, ask for Tina. Try Tuesdays when haircuts are $5 off.

So in the meantime, i say make the best of it on a shoe-string. Recently I installed a bag dispenser, super dooper pooper scoopers (container of cardboard scraps), a toy basket and water station... plus i dropped off a few construction cones for those who are interested in training for agility.

On maintenance: I'll drop by once a week with water and bags. If there's any vandalism, let me know and i'll address it asap.

On improvements: If anyone has any old toys your pup has lost interest in, please consider donating them to the 'dog park' to give them a second life.

Driving Directions: LSD to Science Drive, go south on Columbia Drive beyond MSI's southern parking lot where you'll find the bridge to the tennis courts. Parking by the courts is free. The 'dog park' is located in the NE court enclosure. See bird's eye view attached.

Post office alternative

If the post office on 55th has a long line I walk across the parking lot to Office Depot. They have USPS, FedEx and UPS service there, and you can buy stamps at the checkout. Usually well staffed, although you are sharing them with people getting posters and such, but more pleasant to wait (there is a restroom just to the right) and the people working there are a bit more cheerful!

  • LJ in Hyde Park New neighbor

Thanks for the heads-up. I was not aware of the international shipping situation.

  • Agreed, Office Depot can handle a lot of what the USPS can--there are still a few things, however, that you might still have to go to the Post Office for. I need my packages to be scanned and properly "accepted" into their tracking system when I drop them off, and Office Depot isn't able to do that sort of thing.

Permit parking along lakefront?

From the Hyde Park Herald:

Hyde Parkers living on the 5400 block of South Shore Drive could be the first in the neighborhood with permit parking. Ald. Leslie Hairston (5th) told residents Thursday night, in a meeting at the Shoreland, 5454 S. Shore Dr., that 65 percent of the blocks’ residents had signed a petition requesting permit parking.

Permit parking would allow anyone living on the 5400 block of South Shore Drive block with a car registered to their address to exclusively park on that block between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. from May 1 through October 1.

  • @Aflowerlover, it wouldn't effect visitors of the park. The park closes at 11 pm and the permit is essentially for overnight parking - 11 pm to 5 am. So, basically no hanging out at the park after hours.

  • Aflowerlover A community life, nature, peace & justice lover.

Thanks for thee update greatly appreciated

I'm not going to bore anyone with the details but I have (as well as many others in the 3rd District) witnessed first hand the abuses of power Commander Evans has delivered over his brief reign in Woodlawn. Now with a new commander at the helm, I'm relieved but only in part. With all the lawsuits and complaints against him, i'm afraid the CPD is going back to their old playbook, tossing him from district to district like a hot potato. If anyone knows his current tour-of-duty please let me know. I want to insure that his past follows him and catches up with him sooner then later.. As of yet, to the best of my research, he has been named a defendant in six different lawsuits over the course of his career.

As for the other comment irregardless of the meaningless wordy diatribe. The fact remains a large number of community leaders who are served by the 3rd district want commander Evans reassigned back to the 3rd district and I directed them to this conversation so you can ask them why they support him. I make no assumptions about lawsuits because I have lifelong friends and associates who have explenary records in law enforcement who have been named in lawsuits which were later dismissed. This is why we let courts of law decide guilt and not arm chair attorneys on Everyblock

Here's a great photo-op to include in all your social media... with a caption like "Hey look at me in my Earth Day t-shirt" with a big grin on your face while holding a bag full of trash, rake or pick in hand. Just think how great it will be to spend an hour or two out of one day of the year creating a memory you can use over and over again for the other 364 days out of the year, during which you pick up nothing. No need to go out everyday for five-minutes* to maintain the cleanliness of your block throughout the rest of the year, you already have visual proof that you 'care'... even though the daily litter that continues to accumulate all around you proves otherwise.

Happy Earth Day Everybody!

Keeping it Real, Woodlawn. ;)

Web tool helps neighbors apply for $1 vacant lots

It was big news in Greater Englewood, including Woodlawn, when the City of Chicago announced last month that it would begin a pilot Large Lot Program that allowed nearby homeowners, block clubs and nonprofit groups to buy vacant lots for just $1.

But the application deadline is April 21 and there are a lot of steps in the process, from identifying the available lots to establishing eligibility and then filing the application.

Now there's an app for that: http://largelots.org

LMNHP, thanks so much for providing the link to file a complaint. I agree with everyone; the problem did not just begin with the closing of the U of C post office. Customer service has ALWAYS been horrible at this location. I remember going in one day last year (actually, it was the last time I went there). As usual, the line was off the door. I mentioned to the the "lackluster" employee manning the counter that since we have such a large customer base at this office, why not get a self serve kiosk, like the ones in the downtown post offices (where you could buy stamps and weigh packages yourself and just pay with credit or debit card). She BLANDLY replied "ain't gonna do no good, they don't wanna spend no money on this location". Sigh.... Needless to say, to save myself the aggravation if I need to go to the post office I normally wait (if time permits) until I go to work and use one of the downtown locations. They're not setting the world on fire in terms of customer service either, but at least I can get in and out when I use the self serve kiosk options.

It takes nearly a half-a-million a year to just manage neighborhood services; the Alderman gets $114K, Streets and Sanitation Super $84K, District Police Commander $155K and Fire Chief $133K. Now add up all the salaries of all the positions within each dept and you're talking millions.

Woodlawn's Monsoon Season

It was only a light rain for half a day but looking at the flood where 65th and Minerva T, you would have thought it was 'raining cat and dogs' for days. Every time the opportunity presents itself i check the drainage caps and they're always clear, so i'm left to assume that the main horizontal drain pipe that runs parallel to the streets is clogged. Usually takes a week to drain/evaporate. Has anyone had a similar issue elsewhere and/or found the cause/solution?

  • Corey Warner 25 year englewood resident Politicsmylife chi-styl

Have the same problem on my block ery time it rain, called the alderwoman an she informed me that there was a rain blocker in the drain, to prevent the water from going down all at once but over time the water would recede. So to me its sounds like you have the same problem, but u can always call the alderman or streets an san an find put for sure.
