We've gotten about a dozen calls from Rahm's side. Nothing from Chuy.

Tho Chuy did make an appearance outside my kids school shortly before the first election--there are few parents in the hood who are very pro-Chuy, and presumably orchestrated it. Believe that that is mostly about the school board--which cannot be a bona fide elected body w/o action from Springfield.

John: I agree that debates are probably the best way to get a sense of the candidates. As far as Harold Washington goes, we would be lucky to get someone like Harold again. Never was the Mayor's office as open to community groups as it was during the Washington administration. He knew that he had to get white and Hispanic votes as well as black votes to get reelected, so he spent his time in neighborhoods all around the city. I knew people in his economic development office and they all were very dedicated to bringing resources into the neighborhoods. Garcia just does not have the same voter base as Washington did, nor does he have the same sheer charisma. That is not to say that Garcia isn't very dedicated to making neighborhoods a top priority. He is, and that's his strongest suit. But I got to see Washington close up, working a crowd, and he drew energy from being with people like no politician I have seen since. He loved people of all colors.

Tom; Generally I decide based upon debates and speeches. (who is whitey supposed to vote for again?) Unfortunately I still get mailings , my comments were gleaned from those. Jesus' comment about wanting to continue the "Mayor Washington legacy" made my physically shudder.

P.S. As a side comment to people running for office; All things being equal I will vote for the person who does not call the other candidate names. The "At least I'm not as bad as xxxxx" is a red flag. Kind of like the ISIS slogan; "Hey, at least we are not Comcast"

What is a voter to think, Rahm Emanuel? #CHUY2015

ELECT Jesus "CHUY" Garcia, Mayor of the City of Chicago, and KEVIN M. BAILEY for Chicago's 20th Ward Alderman!

#Chuy2015 #KevinBailey20thWardAlderman

  • Bronzeville Curmudgeon Bronzeville Conservator

In the African American community of Chicago, we elect people to office who are not accountable, then they become sycophants to the established plutocracy, for patronage perks they hand out to their political cronies.

  • Bronzeville Curmudgeon Bronzeville Conservator

Bob Fioretti is supporting Emanuel because Rahm has committed to paying off his campaign dept!!!

Rahm did the same thing for the rump African American candidate, in his last successful campaign for Mayor of Chicago!

"But efforts to peer into the daily operations of the mayor himself — a man with enormous say over hundreds of millions of dollars in city contracts, hiring and regulations — are met by a stone wall."

  • Bronzeville Curmudgeon Bronzeville Conservator

The political decision of which way Chicago will be governed will be made on April 7th 2015.

Will Chicagoans be governed from the "top down" or from the "bottom up"?

Are there any FUTURE 20th Ward Aldermanic Candidate FORUMS or DEBATES scheduled?

Are there any 20th Ward Aldermanic Candidate FORUMS or DEBATES scheduled to take place between now and April 7, 2015?

Alderman Cochran has already either DECLINED or FAILED TO ACCEPT three (3) opportunities to debate his RUNOFF Opponent, Kevin M. Bailey. He keeps bashing Mr. Bailey to whomever will listen on social media, but, not in a forum conducive to addressing the issues head on and in front of the voters!

PLEASE ADVISE!

A Clean(er) Block in Just 5 Minutes a Day

If you care what your neighborhood looks like but it's plagued by excessive littering, i have a simple challenge for you. And no lame excuses, I don't want to hear how busy you are, we can all spare 5 minutes a day, as well as a grocery bag.

So here's the challenge: Everyday walk up and down your block for 5 minutes picking up every piece of trash you see. Do this for a week and you are likely to see enough of a difference, that proves it's worth a continued effort.

As you put in your 5 minutes a day you might hear an inner voice that says something like; "This is beneath you.", "You have better things to do with my time." and/or "You'll look like a crazy street person." Ignore the 'trash talk' and instead say to yourself "I'm ashamed of living on a block that looks so bad.", "This is so simple and easy... a preschooler could do it." and the inevitable logical conclusion in question "WTF is wrong with people?" I prefer/recommend some variation of the later... anger is a great motivator. ;D

Now if you happen to be a doggie-parent, you have zero excuse for at least picking up glass-bottles* as you go on your daily walk around the block... being that roughly a quarter of your time is spent idly standing and waiting for your pup to sniff and pee every other tree, shrub and light pole.

*Note: to decrease the chances of glass shards cutting paws

WOW you have great neighbors. No one comes out to help me and very few pickup litter in their own front yard. My guess is many if not all, are a bit too uppity to stoop so low. Literally and figuratively speaking, picking up trash is beneath them. ;D

Keep up the good work. I salute you all and join in the effort.

DIY Project: Litter Picks

To encourage my neighbors to help pick up litter on the block I have handed out at least a dozen picks over the past five years... yet i have never seen one put to use, or even the evidence of one put to use. You may have a better caliber of neighbor living on your block... so here's an easy (5 simple steps) and cheap (25 cents a piece) DIY project:

To encourage my neighbors to help pick up litter on the block I have handed out at least a dozen picks over the past five years... yet i have never seen one put to use, or even the evidence of one put to use. You may have a better caliber of neighbor living on your block... so here's an easy (5 simple steps) and cheap (25 cents a piece) DIY project:

Take a few shortcuts via alleys during the week and you'll find plenty of old beat up and broken brooms/shovels/rakes. Take them home and salvage only the wood handles. Grab a pack of the longest galvanized nails they have at the hardware store. I highly recommend Menard's 8" nails that you see in the attached photo http://www.menards.com/main/building-materials/pole-barn-post-frame-materials/pole-barn-nails/grip-fast-80d-galvanized-pole-barn-nail-8-pcs-box/p-1459104-c-8769.htm . If you go with a different nail, just make sure it's ribbed like the one in the photo. The ribs help keep the litter from sliding off the nail/pick.

First step: Sharpen the tip of the nail.
Second: Cut off the tail of the nail with a metal grinder or saw
Third: Drill a one inch deep hole in one end of the wood stick/handle.
Forth: Squeeze a little Gorilla Glue or Liquid Nails into the hole.
Fifth: Insert blunt end of nail into hole and let dry over night.
...and WaaLaa you have yourself a sturdy professional grade pick. Now get out there and have some fun harpooning a whale's worth of trash.

Note: After some use, they get dull. For a quick fix, drag them at an angle on the sidewalk to maintain a piercing tip. For a longer lasting tip, always avoid picking up anything off a hard surface, it's the quickest way to dull your point. Kick your 'target' to a soft surface area, ie grass or dirt, before piercing.

  • Todd Agosto Analyst/Investigator at Veritatem Cognoscere

Thanks for the confirmation AJ, i've noticed the same thing. I think it has in part to do with the expectation that someone else will pick up after you ie landlord or weekly maintenance crew. Where as a home owner is accustomed to be responsible for everything.

    Good idea.

On a related note; if anyone has any old toys their pup has lost interest in, consider giving them a second life by donating them to one of the dog parks... also any grocery bags for the bag dispensers would also be greatly appreciated.
