Apartments proposed for site near Jeff Park Metra station

Features include large landscaped courtyard, 48 units in two five-story buildings, interior parking:

  • Ryan Richter Young family in Jefferson Park

    It would have been nice if the DNAInfo reporter had used Census data when talking about parking. From the 2012 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimate. In the census tract the development is located in, 21% of occupied housing units have zero cars, 49.2% have 1 car, 21.1% have two cars, and 8.7% of occupied housing units have 3 or more cars. This should inform people on the parking needs of the community.

  • Is there a lack of parking there for commuters who want to drive and then take the train? It seems like there are very few spots specifically set aside for this. Has a CTA/Metra surface lot or even a parking structure ever been considered for here?

Proposed apartment development near Jeff Park transit center.

To me, the investor sounds like another developer who thinks he/ she knows what's best for a neighborhood they don't know or live.

    The existing store fronts pressed against the streets and sidewalks (Milwaukee Ave in this particular example) rely on foot traffic -- that doesn't exactly mean increased density. Unfortunately, you don't see that too much in areas like that or six corners. Unless you know the neighborhood and businesses, people will often drive by with out looking twice.

    There are more efficient ideas to revitalizing Milwaukee and Lawrence with out putting a burden on the residents near by. It's a tough task.

  • Ryan, I am in agreement with you. Density isn't the answer. My question wasn't directed at you, but rather to those who think this is the answer to the problem in Jeff Park. It is a tough task. I think one of the reasons Six Corners has attracted some investment is due to the creation of the SSA, but I think I'm getting off topic.

Looking for best place to buy poppyseed & nut rolls

My sister usually does the traditional holiday baking but this year she just doesn't have time. I'm not a baker and I've seen the poppyseed roll at the Produce Center. I'm wondering if anyone knows if there is any other place that sells both poppyseed and nut rolls.

  • My grandmother was also of the same ethnicity. Dinkel's Bakery on N Lincoln makes a variety of strudels (poppyseed is the best) that are similar to those that my grandmother baked. You will find them in the frozen section at Dinkels.

  • LadyLord Portage Park citizen

    I thought I posted earlier but I guess it didn't go through...I'm sure I've seen the poppyseed rolls you're talking about at Montrose Deli. Not sure about nut rolls. I also am able to buy really good rye there.

Putting a stop to doorstep litter? (RedPlum & Yellow Pages)

I am getting really tired of seeing these Tribune/RedPlum coupon newspaper things showing up at my house and every other house in the neighborhood, only to either build up on doorsteps or be taken directly to the recycle bin (at our house anyway; maybe others don't even recycle them). I am getting really tired of seeing these Tribune/RedPlum coupon newspaper things showing up at my house and every other house in the neighborhood, only to either build up on doorsteps or be taken directly to the recycle bin (at our house anyway; maybe others don't even recycle them). I believe that there are ways to opt out of receiving these things, but, by and large, it seems that most people have no desire to receive them. This is a huge waste of paper and an eyesore in all neighborhoods across Chicago as they sit out. I personally think that people should have to opt-in to receive these sorts of things not go through time consuming steps to *try* and opt-out of receiving them.

How is it that this sort of unsolicited material that arrives at our homes only to be thrown out is allowed? Why does the city not consider this to be littering or some other violation?

I hardly know anyone that uses a phonebook these days, yet they arrive on our doorsteps only to sit there for weeks/months rotting in the rain, until they are finally all picked up and disposed of. The Tribune/RedPlum papers may not sit out for as long as phone books usually do, but they arrive a couple times a week and I am getting really tired of picking them up.

Can't we get these things to stop? I know that there was a law suit filed over the RedPlum papers last summer; not sure how that ended up though, if it has even been resolved yet... http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/20318975-418/residents-sue-chicago-tribune-over-nuisance-coupons.html

Most of the trees that are coming down are infected with the emerald ash borer, an invasive bug that eats the tree from the inside out. Almost every ash tree in the area is infected. And even if a tree looks well, the ash borer is likely killing the tree and creating a hazard.

It is going to take years for us to work through the devastation caused by this insect.

The good news is that the city is beginning to plant trees again. If you would like a tree, please email us. Please note, we cannot guarantee a specific type of tree.

Tree trimming

I have a large tree that needs trimming - by a licensed and insured service. Does anyone have a recommendation?

  • If the trees are in the parkway they need to be cared for by the City or a company authorized by the City. The Care of Trees is authorized. There are probably other companies, too.

    We have used The Care of Trees for years.

    Good luck.

  • I don't know about what PeralK says about Care of Trees being authorized by the City to trim parkway trees...but I heard they have had and might still have a business relationship with Wright College, working on their trees and supplying them with wood chips for landscaping.

People's Gas shutoff for no inspection?

I'm in a bit of panic as we got a disconnection notice (due to me not calling them to set up a time for a mandatory safety inspection). It's completely my fault but I wasn't aware and now that I'm aware I'm trying to call with no luck. I call in the am and pm and get the same message that they are too busy and try back another time. Grrrr. They gave us 1 866 524 0795.

Any suggestion to get a hold of someone to schedule this inspection? Before my gas is off! Any help appreciated!

  • I called 1-866-573-6880 and chose the option to speak to a representative.
    You will hear a message that the hold time is extremely long, but I only waited about 10 minutes.

  • I believe that I scheduled my inspection on line!

Higher Property Taxes, Better Schools??

Reading the paper today our Mayor thinks our property taxes are to low compared to the suburbs. Now the decision falls to the City Council (Our Alderman). The only reason I'm still residing in the City of Chicago is because of the low taxes compared to suburbs. Emanuel aides claim that an owner of an $250,000.00 home would pay an additional $58 per year on top of a $4,000.00 property tax bill each of the next five years. For them to even consider this is a complete joke. If this was going for a bump in city services I might consider. What do you all think?

    arnie, once the Depression generation passed on I bet that human characteristic has not changed in either direction. Ever.

    What has killed retirement savings after the loss of the enforced savings of a traditional company pension has been other employment trends. (1) The viscious rising dominance of the benefitless twin practices of part time work and borderline criminal use of the 'independent contractor' employment designations. These two evils are crushing low and middle income retirement savings potentials by eliminating structural discipline and economies of scale. Consider that when these two practices spread into the lower half of the workforce, wages did not rise. But the cost to employers went down. (2) Failure of real wages to increase to make up for the loss of paid benefits. (3) Rising medical and educational costs will in advance of general cost-of-living inflation.

    The Social Security trust fund is officially named the "Old-Age and Survivors Insurance Trust Fund." In 1940 (the year in which "modern" Social Security started), only 54% of males and 60% of females who survived to age 21 would live long enough to receive any benefits at all (other than the burial benefit). Today those numbers are around 75% and 85%.

    Another quip -- my grandmother lived during the income tax amendment campaign. She once told me that if people knew then what it would become, there would have been a revolution. The income tax was sold as applying only to the wealthy, and started at 1% for the very well to do. It was a very different time then. My grandparents (an elementary school teacher and salesman) did well in retirement, due to pensions, savings, stocks with dividend payments. Social Security for them was just icing, letting them travel internationally and extensively in retirement.

    They also happened to have lived during a unique period, where the United States survived 100% intact following an incredibly destructive war, with massive industrial capacity, and leveraged that into economic dominance and great prosperity. Times change though, and we've been living through that. One facet of people is that we tend to view what we experience as "normal" and don't really conceive of or plan for different times. Look at the income tax, and the implications that has for our form of government. How many people today can conceive of a time where the income tax didn't exist, and the (much much smaller) federal government survived on nothing but excise and other non-direct forms of taxation?

Anyone else sick of the constant sales calls from Neighborhood Restoration?

Men from the company Neighborhood Restoration have been to our door several times over the course of the year (including twice last night) telling us that we had storm damage to our siding and offering to replace the siding on our house. Dogs and Stairs?

We recently adopted an English bulldog from a rescue who refuses to come up our back stairs (6 steps). She will go down the stairs, but not up, even when bribed with treats. However, she has absolutely no problem going up our front steps--scampers right up. Back stairs are wooden with carpeted treads and closed wooden backs. Front steps are concrete and about twice as wide. She's apparently refused to go up others' stairs too, as reported by the lady who fostered her. She's around 3 years old. Have any of you experienced anything similar? What did you do about it? Thanks so much for any advice you may have.

  • I mean like on top of the stairs itself, not exactly like in the picture.

  • Inactive, don't think so. Too narrow. Maggie almost tried it today. Thinking if she's on leash and I run just ahead, she might follow. That's what she does in front. But guess she will when she's ready. Thanks.

Voters approved pigeon abatement in viaducts, a new turf field at Beaubien School, and several other projects, in addition to extensive street resurfacing.

We're continuing with the process this year. In the fall, residents offered their ideas. Now come learn how we have turned many of those ideas into projects for the 2014 ballot.

I am hosting three project expos where you can learn more about what is on the ballot. Those expos will be:

Tuesday, April 22, 6:30-8 pm
Disney II Magnet School (Kedvale Campus)
3815 N. Kedvale

Wednesday, April 23, 6:30-8 pm
St. Tarcissus School
6040 W. Ardmore

Saturday, April 26, 10:30 am-1 pm
Congregational Church of Jefferson Park (basement)
5320 W. Giddings

This year, projects include:
• Renovations to the Wilson Park tennis courts ($67,000);
• A new playground at Independence Park ($100,000);
• More pigeon abatement and viaduct remediation ($150,000);
• Refreshed bike lanes on Lawrence between Cicero and Long ($70,000);
• New fencing on the pedestrian walkway to the Gladstone Park Metra station ($25,000);
• Tree planting throughout the ward ($535 per tree, vote for 150, 300, or 450);
• Branded street light banner holders throughout the Jefferson Park business district ($17,500); and
• Improved lighting at the Irving Park Road-Kennedy bridge ($35,700) and the Pulaski-Union Pacific viaduct ($10,000).
• Additionally, voters will again select a percentage of the $1 million to go toward street resurfacing. You can learn more about potential street projects during the expos.

Voting will be Saturday, May 10, from 10 am to 2 pm, at the Wilson Park Field House, 4630 N. Milwaukee, with early voting in my office, 4754 N. Milwaukee, May 5-9 between 8 am and 6 pm.

Last summer my condo president and I spent hours trying to figure out where to install something to lock our bikes to. In the end we could not arrive at any decision, we were split. Today Mr. Pres rang my bell with a new idea: could we perhaps buy a rack and install it in the parkway "just for summer parking" so we could quit arguing about where to put a rack inside the fence? It seems to me I already ran this by Andi in the Ward 45 office last summer and she said no, that belongs to the city, but maybe there are magic words I don't know about? Or magic beans? We got two new owners and they've got bikes, too! Is it possible to use the parkway for bikes, or a part of the street? His idea is just do it and let them say something, but I got the distinct feeling the city watches these things like a hawk! Those parking racks aren't cheap and we could waste one!

  • Oops, sorry about that! Didn't think it through.

    ANYWAYS :) I know there is some sort of condo/apt building in that area, and yeah, it'd be nice to have a spot to lock bikes if you have nothing inside the bldg. Might even help those who would want to lock up and take the bus (I think there's a bus stop shelter there, my wife walked smack in to the side of it once while we were taking a walk).

  • Try Ivy's 5419 W. Devon ave. Call in your order 773-775-2545 they'll have your order ready for pick-up or sit down and eat. They have the best Hot Dawgs around if your not in the mood for that hot dawg at the moment try there delicious Chicken Teriyaki with Sweet Potato Fries my favorite! Yummmm!
    Ciao! :)
