Ken Schmitt remembers the 2008 flood that swallowed parts of western Lake County like it was yesterday. Schmitt, one of several Munster residents convening late Tuesday morning at the Northcote Avenue bridge between the town and the Hammond, said he watched former Munster Town Council President Mike Mellon work with others to stave off the rising waters with sand back then.

The recent cold snap allowed Evanston to open its three outdoor skating rinks, but they were closed as of Tuesday because temperatures got too warm to freeze the man-made ponds. While temperatures forecast by the National Weather Service to go as high as 52 degrees by Thursday will keep the rinks closed for a few days this week, city officials said they hope to reopen them this weekend.
