Blotter: Evanston man, once arrested for murder, charged with domestic battery

The 41-year-old man and his 50-year-old girlfriend were drinking alcohol at her friend’s apartment in the 700 block of Seward Street when they got into an argument, Evanston police Cmdr. Ryan Glew said. The woman told police her boyfriend was trying to sleep with her friend.

The man became threatening and the couple left the apartment separately, Glew said. The woman returned to her home in the 700 block of Mulford Street around 4 p.m. Her boyfriend met her at the back door and demanded the keys to the car they were renting, Glew said.

Police responded to a call from the manager of the CVS at 101 Asbury St. at 9:53 p.m., Glew said. An employee told the manager a known man was in the store creating a disturbance.

The man, who is homeless, was arrested Thursday at 10:16 p.m. in the 100 block of Asbury Street.

Police: Man takes hammer to fitness studio window

A 37-year-old resident who lives in the building in the 800 block of Hinman Avenue reported Wednesday that packages were missing from the common area, Glew said.

A Pure Barre employee called police to investigate criminal damage at 7:54 p.m., Evanston police Cmdr. Ryan Glew said. The employee told police she was behind the studio’s front counter at 910 Church St. when a man in a coat with fur approached the store entrance from outside.

Police located the man in the 900 block of Church Street at 8 p.m., Glew said. Officers stopped him and found a hammer in his possession. The man was charged with criminal damage to property.

According to an Evanston Police Department news release, officers were called to Close Knit yarn and crafts store in the 1600 block of Orrington Avenue around 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 22 on a report of an attempted armed robbery.
