Monthly Parking

Is anyone aware of the availability of monthly parking close to the 6400 block of N Leavitt Street? Ideally, I'm interested in renting a secure garage space. Many thanks!

Have you switched from Comcast to RCN?

I am thinking of switching from Comcast to RCN in order to save money. Has anyone switched from one company to the other? Have you seen good savings over comparable packages? I went to RCN's website like I was going to purchase new service and put everything in my cart. I tried to make it really close to what I have now as far as Premier Digital, Phone, Internet, Tivo, extra digital box, router, modem, unpublished number, etc. Have I been paying too much this long? The monthly estimated bill (which includes estimated fees and taxes) was 30% lower than Comcast!! Trying to decide if it would really be worth it. Thanks for the feedback!!!

  • d3 NoHo

Oh, the final straw in my latest decision to not get comcast over RCN last time was Comcast now requires you to buy all 3 bundled services if you want to get their best DVRs ... right now the X1 for example. only available with the Triple Play. RCN has whole home tivo and you can get it w/out the non-sense.

  • I had RCN for years and I recently switched when our internet only bill went up to $90 a month. In combination with a few reactivation fees of $40 the bill was up $130 a month. It was too much. We are taking our chances with a slower speed with Comcast. $24.99 a month.

Congress is overloaded with career aged men - who if you believe some reports are on mind improvement medicine. Time for change - those 18 -25 years old - get out there and vote incumbents out of office - simple on the basis they are not serving their constituents. Vote in the younger generation - make a change that will be productive. That effort should start with Alderman and go right to the congress, senate, and President.

Energy Scam Folks Making Their Rounds

I just had a man knock HARD on my front window while ringing the doorbell, and THEN jiggling the door handle excessively hard. I came from a back room and saw him walking down the front steps and I thought it may have been a delivery driver, so I opened the door (oops) and he came flying back up the steps with the whole spiel of "Just need to see your energy bill, etc." I politely told him no thanks,...

Told him "no thank you, I'm not interested", and closed the door. He then went huffing across my lawn hollering about how black men in Chicago don't get any respect...
So, that was pleasant.
He was wearing a blue polo, tan pants, lanyard around his neck and had dreads.

Just an FYI to the people in the Pratt/Wayne area.

I also pointed out she had nothing to "write down information on".
I swear it's a training exercise for future scamming.

Is RogersEdge a real place?

The President of the Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce has decided it would be a good idea to proclaim that "Rogers Edge [sic] was a bad marketing idea, and is not a real location in the City of Chicago!"

That seems to have sparked a debate on a lesser known Rogers Park facebook page about the matter. It's quite a good one.

So what say you Everyblock, Is RogersEdge a real location or not?

A 44-year-old woman is charged with setting last week’s fire at an apartment building on Touhy, just east of Clark, that caused the death of another woman when she jumped from the top floor of the building.

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s office charged Margaret Reed, a Lincoln Square resident, with two counts of murder and a count of aggravated arson–all felonies. She is being held without bail.

Reed is believed to be the person who set the fire last Tuesday morning behind 1745 W. Touhy. Surveillance cameras recorded Reed at the site of the fire shortly before it started, leading detectives to interview her.

In the meantime, the victims of the fire need your help. The fire displaced 34 people, including nine children. Many were left literally with only the clothes on their backs.

My office, working with Northside Community Resources, created a donation page through which Rogers Park neighbors can provide financial support to the victims. The money raised will be used to provide the families with help on a security deposit and first month’s rent, plus clothing and basic household items.

Lost Golden Lab/Retriever

I met a woman last night who was looking for a friend's lost dog. I can't remember exactly whether she said it was a golden lab or a golden retriever. A large dog in any case. Has anyone seen this lost dog? I hope she has found her dog, but if not, the dog went missing at Albion and Bosworth. Unfortunately, I have forgotten the owner's exact address. It would be easy to locate the owner by knocking on a few doors. Or, if you have spotted the dog, feel free to message me.

Package thief Loyola University area (Arthur and Sheridan)

Please, neighbors, watch for this package thief who likes to operate in the early afternoon. He wears dark clothing and a hoodie and carries a large bag.
We have had several packages stolen in our building the last weeks in my building and maybe he is the reason why you people are missing packages/deliveries too!

  • d3 NoHo

Amazon still hasn't shifted the liability off of them bit they are now taking pictures of every package they leave on your porch/etc.

  • Jeffrey Littleton If you can't be a poet, be the poem.

Maybe the long term solution is sucure package delivery boxes, especially for multi-units?
There have always been package theifs but in recent years it's become an epidemic.

  • d3 NoHo

Thats what amazon locker is for -- they already offer that option. Your building always has the option of installing a secure package receipt box but these aren't usually designed for multi unit buildings

Garbage Collection every day???

Just moved near Sheridan and Fargo, and there seems to be garbage/recycling collection every single morning! Is this normal? I've never experienced a neighborhood waste collection that happens more than once a week, and the noisy mornings are really irritating. I've been woken up every morning by a noisy garbage truck outside my window!

  • Another complication, despite the potential long term benefits, recycling laws mean there are 2 pick ups for every building - 1 for landfill; 1 for recycling center. Mine does them on separate days.

  • there is no way to coordinate this...every building may use a different waste co. It is unrealistic to think that all these buildings or waste refuse companies are somehow going to coordinate with each other to hit your block at the same time every day or every other day, so...

there is no way to coordinate this...every building may use a different waste co. It is unrealistic to think that all these buildings or waste refuse companies are somehow going to coordinate with each other to hit your block at the same time every day or every other day, so your just wasting your time here and especially the Alderman's time. It is the norm for large buildings, especially high-rises, to have pickup every single day, plus separate pick ups for recyclables one to three times a week. Plus you have the city collecting for the five or fewer unit buildings with their trucks. Welcome to big city life, or at least dense high rise neighborhood life. I used to be annoyed by this too, but eventually just got used to it. Get a sound conditioner or blow a fan on high. One of the many reasons I moved to a single family house in a less dense neighborhood full of same. The city comes once a week for trash, every other week for recycling...otherwise it's nothing but birds chirping heaven.

What's Going on with the Beaches?

Our Barber Rake fellow this year drives in the same straight lines over and over, leaving yards and yards of un-raked beach and stray garbage. The garbage hasn't been picked up--it's 11 a.m. The dune-building efforts have stopped at the south end. Who's door do we knock on?

A fire broke out about dawn this morning at six-unit building located at 1745 W. Touhy (between Paulina and Clark). Tragically, a woman died as a result of injuries she suffered after she jumped from her third-floor apartment to escape the flames. She is identified as Maria Silva, 51 years old. A second person was also injured. I do not know the condition of the second person.

Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago tells me fire fighters heard smoke detector alarms as they entered the building. It is not known at this time whether the smoke detector in the victim's apartment was operating.

The fire started in a dumpster behind the building and quickly went up the wooden back stairs. Fire inspectors are currently attempting to determine whether the fire was accidental or set deliberately.

I will update you as I receive more information.

I need to cut the cable

i need someone who is computer savvy to help me cut my TV cable service (Comcast). I have sort of browsed RCN and some of the others but don't seem to be able to figure out how to watch some of the things I like without using a cable provider. I am moderately aware of Hulu, Netflix, and some of the other services but am not sure I have a "smart" TV. (HaanSpree 280H) Any help would be appreciated. I am on Lakewood between Loyola and Arthur.

Don't forget to check if your internet will have data caps too and what you need to do to avoid that.

  • If you want network channels you can buy a rabbit TV stick. I think it’s a usb. I think it was 25.00 a year w/possibilities to upgrade.

Energy Scammers?

Three people from "Life Energy" are making their way down Ridge north of Touhy asking for whomever is in charge of the electricity at the buildings. I "explained" that person is not here but in another building and that seemed to confuse them. Wearing blue shirts with the name on them.

If they were legitimate they would have that info already.

  • Same thing in my building at Greenview & Morse. It's an identity theft scam. I took their photos and chased them out of the building. But they're so brazen, it took some doing. This happens about every 4 months in my building -- at least I run into them at that approximate rate.

Join me this Friday, June 1st, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., as I cut the ribbon on what promises to be the best Argo tea yet.

We’ll provide complementary beer, wine and soft drinks, as well.
