Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce will partner with the Midwest Workers Association to fight against poverty in the Rogers Park neighborhood.

On Wednesday November 8th, Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce President, Bill Morton, traveled to the Back of the Yards neighborhood to meet with the Midwest Workers Association at their headquarters to find a solution to poverty in the Rogers Park neighborhood.

The Midwest Workers Association is a free and voluntary unincorporated membership association which services workers, temporary workers and other low-paid workers and their families. The organization’s mission is to alleviate our member’s most important-poverty- at the root.

“We will participate with the Midwest Workers Association at future Illinois Commerce Commission meetings to fight for keeping utilities affordable for residences because nobody should live without heat in the winter time” said Bill Morton, president of the Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce.

The actions that Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce will take to support Midwest Workers Association are distributing the Association’s postcards, inviting them to speaking engagements in Rogers Park, and offering outreach table opportunities at our local stores.

Next 49th Ward Alderman

RP...you have a contested election coming up. Good news! Change is in the air.

Enjoy.

  • We need smart, energetic younger people to run for office in this city. Every current political class has a limited lifespan, and there's a future generation to think about.
It's too early to know how well Maria Haddon will handle herself, but I for one will support her right to be in the campaign without being prejudged. Even if she loses, she will gain visibility and experience for future campaigns.

Rogers Park Chamber Volunteers at NEIU Career Fair and University Honors Program

The Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce spent a busy day last Thursday, November 16, 2017, at Northeastern Illinois University NEIU.

The Chamber participated in the College of Business and Management Career Fair. Chamber President Bill Morton and interns, Emilia Jamarillo and Trudy Leong, greeted and discussed Chamber internship business, social media, and legal opportunities with many of the 1,000 students majoring in Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Management and Business Administration.

After the Career Fair, Biil Morton and Trudy volunteered with the University Honors Program at the North Park Village Senior Apartments at 5801 N. Pulaski Rd. to help at the Apartments' annual Thanksgiving dinner for the residents.

UHP Director Dr. Jon Hageman sent out a last-minute call to UHP students for help and eloquently stated the need.

"Many of the residents are alone and have no family in the area (or at all)--the holidays are times when those residents are particularly alone, and even something small like a meal served by a smiling face lets them know they matter—it gives them a sense of worth and human dignity that is otherwise lacking, or in very short supply.

For me, it’s easy to see work and other things as overwhelming. Taking a couple of hours to serve others whose lives are in many ways much more difficult than mine helps me keep things in perspective. I have seen how a small amount of time on my part can make a big difference in the life of someone who otherwise feels abandoned. Ultimately, we all depend on help from others, and it’s important to repay that in some way."

Chamber President Bill Morton appreciates giving back and providing interns with a well-rounded internship experience, which includes Chamber volunteer work.

Mr. Morton looks forward to Chamber involvement in future university career fairs and supporting his interns' volunteer opportunities. Trudy is an NEIU student and enrolled in the University Honors Program.

Let's see if the media follows the story:
Carjacking and murder charges have been filed against a Wisconsin man who was in a stolen vehicle during a crash that killed his alleged accomplice Wednesday morning on the South Side.

Deangelo M. Williams, 21, was charged with one felony count of aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm, one felony count of robbery armed with a firearm and two felony counts of murder while committing another forcible felony, according to a statement from Chicago Police.

Williams and a 19-year-old man were wearing masks when they carjacked a male at gunpoint at 9:48 a.m. Wednesday as the victim was getting out of his vehicle in the 1000 block of West 61st Street, police said.

They drove off in the stolen vehicle with police pursuing them, police said. The stolen vehicle crashed less than 10 minutes later in the 4900 block of West Wentworth.

The 19-year-old man driving the stolen vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene...
Why do we point this out?
We were told in roll call in 007 that the surviving offender was charged with murder approved by the ASA only later the great office of Kim Foxxx denied the charges. Then the Chief of Detectives over turned them and charged him with murder again. You can only guess what's going to happen in court. Ridiculous.

'Adriana's Angels' shines light on refugees, diversity in children's books

“It comes from experience of real families and my experience of just getting to know these families and what they’ve been through in the past,” she said. “I now live in Rogers Park, which is a traditional place for refugee folks to be resettled. Everyone had a free taste of Tequila Cazadores inspired tacos. This was a complement to our neighborhood restaurants, not competition. This celebrity event brought visitors to Rogers Park, who patronized both Empirical Brewery and Mayne Stage. This was not your regular for-profit, food truck, taking dollars back to where they came from, instead of being cycled throughout our community again.

It is good to have philanthropists visit the neighborhood. What I especially enjoy about Chef Aaron Sanchez, is that he launched the Aarón Sánchez Scholarship Fund, an initiative empowering aspiring chefs from the Latin community to follow their dreams and attend culinary school.

Allow me to explain why I was one of the 48 alderman to support the proposal. Simply put, the new academy is a necessary step in the long road to reforming our broken Police Department.

The proposed public safety training academy is in direct response to the U.S. Justice Department’s call to improve police officer training procedures and facilities.

No, those recent tax hikes haven't improved Chicago's financial health

From Crain's Greg Hinz and Truth in Accounting:

In a report that City Hall won't like much, a Chicago-based watchdog group says hundreds of millions of dollars in recent tax hikes haven't done much to improve Chicago's woeful financial condition—at least so far.

Truth in Accounting, a somewhat conservative research group whose board runs the ideological spectrum, gives the city an F on its overall financial breakdown, saying each Chicagoan would be on the hook for $41,700 in unfunded liabilities if the city shut down tomorrow and had to reconcile its books—more than many people make in an entire year. Overall, it concludes that "Chicago finances (are) still in peril."

Venting

Speaking of parking issues in Rogers Park... an old gentleman across the street on North Shore has a designated handicap spot. When he returns from wherever, he parks in his spot. Then, as soon as an adjacent spot opens up he removes his placard from the window and moves his car there, taking up an extra space.

I fume every time I see this. What’s his deal? Does he just like an unobstructed view of the street? And, (yes, I know you can’t always tell), he doesn’t seem to have a disability.

It just apppears selfish and un-neighborly.

  • that's nice of you to say Omar..IDK which comment you are talking about but nonetheless it is quite mean

  • as usual the last few posts end up with some immature comments,

Conversation about dangerous intersection of Clark Street & Howard Street

Numerous auto accidents at the intersection of Clark Street and Howard Street, along the Chicago / Evanston border, have raised concerns over the public safety issue.

One noted case involved pedestrians. Would a clear turning lane, and a light to turn left help?

I am asking all of my friends, family to take a moment , remember what it was like to be 19 years old. Dating, competitive sports, traveling, working your first real job, nights with your friends, driving your first beater, getting lost finding your freshman college class, dreaming of your future.

Now in the midst of all of that fun, add fainting without warning, weight gain and swelling 10lb -20lbs in a matter of a few days, exhaustion not eliminated by a good night’s sleep, shoebox filled with daily medications, no salt diet, sneaking the seasoning packs from ramen, many visits to neurologists, cardiologists, nephrologists , twice weekly infusions to stabilize and countless blood draws.
Remember now you are 19 years old. This is the life my grandson Marco has dealt with since he was ten.
For him the attempts to stabilize his kidneys is over. Now we are in the race for his life, a race to give him the youth this disease has stolen.
We fear the tests, the surgery and the pain. But change your focus for a moment, our family fears Marco will not be able to drive or live independently to enjoy the gift of youth so many of us have enjoyed and taken for granted.
people of color needing organs, the closer the match- the better his odds of the transplant giving him the dreams he keeps tucked away for fear they will never be.

It’s a huge commitment, it’s a great sacrifice and not one of you should consider it lightly in anyway. But if you think you would like to donate, even if not for Marco, give that gift to someone else who is waiting to live their best life.

To begin the screening process go to

Marco Gonzalez is the patient.

I thank you for reading this, for considering donation and for sharing this post with everyone you know.

  • I'll hold you and your grandson in my heart. I don't meet donor criteria, but someone will. A close relative of mine died in his forties and four people received organs, which has always comforted me. Because kidneys can also be harvested from living donors, I hope his wait goes quickly.

It’s crazy to think a neighbor next door parked his white car right behind our Car and did nothing. Not even honk at the men in our car. I’m sure every one on the corner block recognized that the men did not own th car in which they were braking into were not us. I know if we had seen some thing strange we would have done something to deter what was going on and Called the police. We all work hard to get what we need to live for our families and our self and be safe. Please let’s be mindful to each other with respect for one another. Keep your camera filming on your window, let’s work together to be safe of one another. See something strange in our neighborhood, or our car report to the police. God bless everyone, thank you.

  • Phill Domo My rights are absolute and non-negotiable!

One thing that must be abundantly clear is that you should never expect help from strangers. So many people freeze-up or, let's be frank, coward-up in the face of danger.
We must aim to be strong, train hard, and be self-reliant.
There are so many Youtube videos of violent attacks in public and the comments always say "But why won't anyone help???"
Yes, sometimes there's a hero around, but it's better to be the hero yourself.

  • So, being you have the break-in on video, can anything be done with that?

Many of the cars I see parked have at least 3 feet in front of them and 3 feet behind them resulting in even less parking. We need to put pressure on Alderman Joe Moore to do something! Either initiate permit parking or build a couple of parking garages, or even draw lines in the road to make sure people aren't greedily taking up multiples spots. I personally am affected by this because some nights I work until 12:30 am then have to be back at 10 am the next day.. I drive around some nights for 1-2 hours looking for parking and its never close by to where I live. I know others feel the same way.
Please please lets do something about this! With winter around the corner its only going to get much worse.

Not looking for conflict - or to spin this 'parking; thread in yet another direction, but I think over time, many of us may have knowingly or inadvertently revealed bits and pieces of information that could ultimately lead to being identified (I inadvertently discovered who at last two people on EB are in the 'real world)' - so yes, I wouldn't characterize it as 'drama' to not publicly identify where someone lives if they haven't chosen to do so themselves.

I'm don't know what any of Wazzup's prior comments have to do with someone else identifying where he lives. Even if someone does manage to lead a trail to their own door, that shouldn't suggest that it's good practice for someone else to do it, even if it's not being done maliciously.

We were told that if the pet is really active after the chipping that the microchip can migrate. Only after quite a while he finally found it down in the chest area. Not all vets would be so patient and could conclude he wasn't chipped. He need some surgery which would slow him down for a few days. It was a good time to have him re-chipped. It then stayed in placed for the rest of his life.

Technically it follows zoning law because its a Planned Developmenf - BPD No 1275. The City Council approved a custom zoning désignation - ie mads a legal exception - because the dealwrship’s plan does not conform to the zoning that was previously in place. It s an abuse of the PD as a legal mechanism, not what a PD was designed for.

It also doesn’t confirm to the Chicago streetscape ordinance. Or the Western Ave streetscspe plan.

it’s sets am awful precedent for the way PDs are being used and mostly for what is acceptable to build within city limits.

Lost cat. North shore and campbell

Lost a mostly black and a little white cat named Bean. He is sweet though shy. He does not have a collar but does have a chip. Please message me should you see him.

Michael

  • There are two regular feral mostly black tuxedo like with white paws cats that frequent the 6700 N block of Campbell (between Pratt and Northshore).
I saw a cat fitting that description last night about 9:30. Not sure if it's one of the regulars or your kitty. I tried to engage with it but it hid in the bushes.

  • Michael, Did you find Bean? Can you post a picture. We've seen a cat similar to your description. She is in our backyard right now. Please post a picture, if you haven't found Bean yet.

@ Tittleton - do not try to reduce the standard of living for those who worked hard for their homes and pay heavy taxes to live in an uncluttered beautiful neighborhood - and you will not be harassed. Tents and outdoor living environment does not contribute to the type of environment working good people want for their families. For those that do not expect city handouts the concept of clean and landscaped streets is not hard to understand. "Lifeline Theatre has been in its current home — a converted Commonwealth Edison substation on Glenwood Avenue, near the Morse Red Line stop — since 1985. Over time, it has become a flagship institution for what’s now called the Glenwood Avenue Arts District.

For Gregory Altman, 45, a 20-year resident of the neighborhood and owner of Rogers Park-based Chicago Condo Management and Maintenance Co., Lifeline has been just what the name implies. Altman can’t say for sure that the tenants and owners he works with are driven specifically to locate in Rogers Park by the presence of Lifeline or other cultural institutions, which have included, in recent years, the Mayne Stage on Morse and Theo Ubique Cabaret Theatre in the No Exit Cafe on Glenwood Avenue.

But, he said, “it certainly creates the positive foot traffic that weaves the fabric of the neighborhood. When we had nothing else happening around Glenwood and Morse, the critical mass of those theaters helped to build that kind of traffic around what was basically, at the time, a bedroom community with vacant storefronts.”

Living near the limelight: Some Chicagoans find local theaters add more value than expected
When scouting locations for a new home, buyers and renters generally take into account proximity to schools, shopping and transit networks. But in an area like Chicago that never stops bragging - and with good reason - about its lively performing arts scene (which kicks into high gear with the fall season), there's an increasing awareness that theaters are an added value for residents.
