Recent drowning calls for renewed focus on lakefront safety

Our community was devastated by the recent drowning at our lakefront of 13-year-old Darihanne Torres.

Though we mourn the death of young Darihanne, we should not forget the brave first responders and community residents who put their own lives at risk in an attempt to rescue Darihanne and another girl, who fortunately survived. Please join me in thanking our police officers, firefighters and the countless Good Samaritans who did everything they could to save the two children.

This horrible tragedy reminds us of the critical importance of beach safety and has prompted impassioned conversations and suggestions about what we can do to prevent such tragic events in the future. These include calls for extended lifeguard hours, more signage, enhanced water safety education for people of all ages and better training for public safety officers responding to water safety emergencies.

Group (2) would walk from the 10 Sector event (at Warren Park) over to the 20 Sector event (at District 24)
The walk will take about 20-25 minutes on a pre-determined route and give visibility to the community about support of NNO.

We are reaching out to everyone registered with the CAPS Beat 2411 Yahoo group to see if you would like to participate.

If you would like to walk please either privately respond ASAP to me (richconcaildi@aol.com) with a YES

If we get enough people, we’ll take the next set in getting this organized and keep you posted on next steps.

NNO this year in District 24:

As an FYI, this year, NNO in District 24 will consist of 3 separate events located on a by-sector basis:

- The 10 Sector (Beats 2411, 2412 and 2413) will have a NNO event at Warren Park potentially from 6:00PM – 8:00PM

- The 20 Sector (Beats 2422, 2423, 2424) will have an event at Pottawattamie Park potentially from 5:30PM – 7:30PM

- The 30 Sector (Beats 2431, 2432 and 2433) will have an event at District 24 Station potentially from 6:30PM – 8:30PM

About NNO
The event is meant to increase awareness about police programs in communities, such as drug prevention, community watch, and other anti-crime efforts with a partnership between law enforcement and community members. NNO also enhances the spirit of community participation in crime prevention and improving the quality of life.
District 24 is one of the largest geographical Districts in the C P D and has one of the lowest crime rates in the entire city. CAPS, the WRP Community Watch program and NNO participation adds to this overall success and supports CPD efforts.

What is the specific crime you are marching in response to, and where exactly is it located? I have heard about some car thefts due to people leaving cars unlocked. The solution to this crime is for people to lock their cars. I have lived in WR for 22 years, and have not experienced a single crime. What exactly are you trying to accomplish by having 20 people marching around? Our neighborhood is already safe, friendly, and welcoming to people from all over the world. If your group is all white, how do you think that will appear to our valued neighbors who are immigrants? If your goal is a safer neighborhood, I suggest you knock on doors and introduce yourselves by name individually to your neighbors in order to build trust and caring. That is WR to me. But perhaps there is some criminal activity taking place on certain blocks which would be resolved by having 10-20 people marching around in those places? If so, could you please explain? Thanks!

Feral cats weapon of choice for some residents facing influx of rats
A year ago, it wasn't unusual for Andrea Swank to look outside her Lincoln Park home and see hundreds of little rat footprints in the snow. This year she hasn't seen a single track in her yard. The difference? Swank took in three feral cats, and the results are indisputable.

That post is referring to feral cats that are not in a community where the colonies are maintained and contains some misinformation regarding disease. The Cook County Feral Cat Ordinance has specific rules to address all of the concerns posed in that article. Please see here for the full ordinance. http://www.whiskersandtailsfoundation.org/info/display?PageID=16827

1 - Feral cats avoid humans - they do not attack them unless they are being forcefully handled, and they are required to be vaccinated, so they do not spread rabies.

    2. Feral colonies in Chicago are required to vaccinate their cats. "...the species of parvovirus that infects humans is limited to the human species. Viral human parvovirus is a common childhood ailment that is passed strictly by other humans."
    https://www.petmd.com/dog/wellness/evr_dg_parvovirus_across_species

    3. They are required to be spayed/neutered, so they do not breed incessantly breed.

    4. By vaccinating, spaying/neutering the cats disease, breeding and fighting is minimized, while pest control is optimized.

    5. Again, strong odors from urine marking is not an issue since these cats are neutered.

    7. Dying kittens are not an issue in maintained colonies where cats are fixed. Animals die - it's part of life. I see far more dead birds, raccoons, and squirrels than cats.

    6. Any animals allowed outside can get fleas from normal outdoor sources - neighborhood dogs, rabbits, raccoons, opossums all can have drop fleas and fleas can be found in grass and gardens. They exist in nature without having cats around. But the main spreader of fleas is vermin - rats and mice whose populations are controlled by cats.

8 & 9.Feral colonies do not live in people's attics, sheds, etc, because a requirement of being a feral cat colony caregiver is providing shelter.

    10. Litters of kittens are not an issue with feral cat colonies because, again, they are all spayed/neutered

  • Actually, I'd rather have feral cat colonies than feral rat or mice colonies.

The CityKey Card is an optional, officially recognized government-issued identification card that you can use to access a range of public and private services. It is designed to reduce barriers to those who have difficulty accessing traditional government-issued identification, such as undocumented immigrants, youth, the homeless, transgender residents, domestic violence survivors, and those recently released from incarceration.

The Program’s goals have since grown to include discounts and other benefits for all of Chicago’s 2.7 million residents. This means that not only does the Chicago CityKey give Chicagoans the dignity and peace of mind that comes with having a government-issued ID, but it also serves as your key to Chicago– serving as your library card, Ventra card and benefits card for cultural institutions, sports teams and local businesses.

Tips for first time home buyers in Evanston

Hello, All

Wondering if people have any suggestions on resources (threads on EB, mailing lists, meetups, ...) to help somebody who's looking to buy their first home in Evanston get up to speed on the market, Evanston taxes & rules, etc.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

BB

  • That's what a good Realtor can do - at no cost to the buyer. Ask around, talk to a few and choose one you/re comfortable with who knows the area and market well. We bought last year with the help of an invaluable guy with a deep knowledge of all things RP/Edgewater. Best of luck to you!

  • Wendy Small-town living in the big city

Agree with Robin about NextDoor and with David about Realtors. We moved to Evanston from the city two years ago and our Realtor was super-helpful -- she knew Evanston really well and understood what would be important for our family. One thing to be aware of is the preservation ordinance and historic districts -- be sure to understand if you're in a district and if your house is a landmark, and how either designation might affect you.

These workdays have resulted in great growth in the preserve, now in its third year. The woodland area has been transformed and a much greater variety of flowering plants can be seen and deer and coyote visit regularly. While the number of waterfowl. is down this year (perhaps due to the unusual weather we have had) overall the number of nesting and migratory birds continues to increase.

As for the work day, there are a number of invasive species–including garlic mustard, white sweet clover, pigweed, bedstraw and others that need to be controlled. We may also begin collecting seeds from the golden Alexanders, starry false Solomon's-seal and perhaps other spring-blooming plants. There continues to be invasive woody species and resprouts that need to be removed.

  • From what I can tell, he can "get away with it" as long as he never leaves his driveway. He can receive a ticket when parked on the street or when parked in a public garage or parking lot, or even if he is stopped by the Chicago police for any other reason. Sounds risky to me...

I've gotten estimates from some roofing companies for roof replacement on a two-flat. I want to run the names by the community and see if anybody can recommend them. The reviews online look good but would like to hear more directly. First if you have something to say about the first batch I'd appreciate since I've already been in contact. But feel free to share comments about the others as well.

TAR Restoration
Presidential Roofing
JL Contractor Services
Horizon Restoration

There were a few others I saw mentioned in posts here I haven't contacted:
Nyberg Exteriors
Lindholm
Moore roofing
Feze roofing

We can keep it simple:
Job Quality: 1 - 5 stars
Promptness/Reliability: 1 -5 stars
Communication: 1-5 stars

Our condo association used Lindholm in the past and they were fine. They were among the bidders for some work we did last month. We ended up choosing Chicago Roofing Services, even though they were pricey, because we had the most confidence in them. The quality of their work was very good and they cleaned up after the job. Note--we eliminated a couple of bids because they didn't even get out of their trucks--make sure you choose someone who actually gets up on the roof to see what needs to be done.

  • I cannot recommend Jack Taff Roofing highly enough! SInce 1949 they have been a staple in the neighborhood. They just came to my house last week after the biblical rain to fix a problem for me. Same day I called!! They also put on my new roof last Fall at a very good price.

This generous one-time grant allows Gale to immediately begin construction of the clinic, which the school hopes to open in time for the beginning of the academic year in September.

I brought the health clinic initiative to the attention of Loyola’s administrators and requested a $25,000 grant from the university, which was the amount needed to start construction this summer. They generously agreed to my request.

This grant represents the largest one-time cash donation the university has ever provided and is reflective of Loyola’s continuing and growing commitment to Rogers Park’s schools. I am grateful for the university’s generosity.

TICKS
Sign produced by Tom Murphy
Of course there are ticks here
They are native to the area and feed on the blood of mice, voles and other mammals (that makes us fair game, unfortunately). Here's a lot of great information on ticks to help ease your concerns. Another interesting nature story is that possums, those less-than-lovely native marsupials, are great tick eaters. They destroy 90% of all ticks they encounter and a single possum may eat as many as 5,000 in a season.

They took off walking north towards Peterson Ave . The tennant was going to call the police . Then again tonight five males showed up but the garage was empty as the tennant decided to park on the street( the over head door is broken and won’t come down) This is an absentee landlord and he doesn’t take of the building . I called the police . I will call the building department on Monday to report the landlord . This is the second break-in in this alley in a week

Just as an FYI, 5800 on Artesian is neither 49 nor 50. It’s Ward 40, whose aldercreature is Patrick O’Connor. Unless Mr. O’Connor has suddenly gone “non-binary”, he is indeed, a he. So, your pedantic pronoun distractions missed the mark, dear NOH poster.

Back to the subject: attend your CAPS meetings, get to know your beat officers, get to know your neighbors, clean up the trash outside your house or apartment, call cops when needed, this applies no matter your ward number.

    Peace.

The majority of machine alderman fall in line and use the talking points that shield 16 shots Rahm. Choose most anyone of them and they will pretty much respond in the same way to an incident of crime. It’s rare to hear anything come out of their mouths that seriously attempts to address the problem.

Helen has been an apologist for quite some time of the local alderman (who recently repeated the standard line in an interview about the woman who was punched on the CTA) But watch for the next loyalist newspaper report or comment by yet another alderperson who will remind us that crime is down the next time someone is raped, assaulted, or shot.

The insensitivity of the comment often escapes us. Imagine telling a person who has just been diagnosed that cancer numbers are down. It does not address the specific problem. It prioritizes face saving and avoids responsibility.

New West Ridge library growing fast, seeks residents' memories

Here's an excellent article by a reporter familiar to West Ridge, Linze Rice, about the new library at Western and Pratt. BlockClub is a worthy successor to the much-missed DNAInfo.

  • Block club is good; Rice is a good reporter except for one mistake: the senior citizen housing is not "affordable" housing--a euphemism--it is subsidized housing forcibly extracted from taxpaying citizens making their housing more unaffordable.

Lost kitty named Tabitha

Our 1 year old kitten seems to have gotten out of the house. She's an indoor cat and very friendly. Please help us find her. Our little girl is heartbroken

  • Bye

Any update? If you haven't already post/look on Lost Cats of Illinois on Facebook

  • No updates. Will try that too thank you

  • I'm not sure where you are at, but I have seen a young cat, who looks lost a couple times around the 1200 - 1300 block of Elmdale. It's only at night, so I haven't been able to get a close look at the markings, but the build is slight.
