Why I voted against the taxpayer subsidy for Presence Health
The City Council yesterday voted to provide a $5.6 million tax increment finance subsidy to Presence Health. I was one of 18 aldermen who voted against the subsidy. Allow me to explain why. The subsidy was given to entice the health care provider to move its headquarters, and the 200 jobs that came with it, from the suburbs to downtown Chicago.

This Saturday, we will come together again to celebrate the spirit of the resistance efforts over the past year and unite to focus on the 2018 elections and beyond.

The 49th Ward is clearly strong and united and the March to the Polls this Saturday is an important act of resistance. Please join us for this historic march.

It's a DB 300, principally designed as a drawing-board projector with a 3x enlargement or reduction, or 18x on a vertical surface. It weighs 40 pounds, uses two 150-watt photo enlarger lamps and pulls 115 volts and 3 amps. We have the original owner's manual. Free to a user who can make good use of this great teaching aid.

  • Hi Dan. I have a friend, not on Everyblock, that would LOVE to have this for her school. She's an art teacher. How can I have her contact you?

The new deployments come at a time when the 49th Ward is experiencing a significant decrease in gun violence.

Despite a series of horrific shooting incidents last fall, which included the death of school teacher Cynthia Trevillion and the injury of a young man who was a target of gang recruitment, the 49th Ward last year experienced a 33% decrease in homicides as compared to 2016 and a 31% decrease in shooting incidents.

The reduction in shooting incidents continued a trend that began two years ago. Since 2015, the 49th Ward has seen a 42% decrease in shootings.

It's been years...decades rather since I've been there. I just read a story saying sledding is illegal on the big hill. Is this true? I know it's been unbearably cold, but has anyone been there recently? How are the sledding conditions?

  • Sledding is allowed on Cricket Hill. That's in Lincoln Park near Montrose Harbor and there's lots of free parking.

  • Warren Park has a sledding hill. Built for sledding.

Out-of-staters recognize our financial problems more clearly than we do

This excerpt is from an editorial in a newspaper in Nevada, the Review-Journal.

"Illinois is a financial basket case — which is what you get when you combine political patronage with powerful public-sector unions that control leftist politicians. The state should be a case study for other jurisdictions on how not to conduct public policy. After all, who will pay the bills when the taxpayers flee?"

Surely, after decades of one-party rule in Springfield, Cook County and Chicago, we voters can do better this March in the primaries and in September in the general election.

  • The joy of living in a state controlled by Democrats for decades. The unfunded debt is worse in high tax Democrat controlled states...and tends to be be better in low tax Republican states.

This will provide my staff members, who routinely work far more than 40 hours a week, an opportunity to spend time with their families during the holiday week when calls and emails to my office are almost non-existent.

Though the Ward Service Office will be closed, the City of Chicago will continue to provide 49th Ward residents with garbage and recycling pick-up and other routine city services, with the exceptions of Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Because Christmas and New Year’s Day fall on a Monday this year, if you receive City garbage and recycling pick-up on Monday, your garbage and recycling will be collected on Tuesday. If you receive City garbage and recycling pick-up on Tuesday, you may not get your garbage and recyclables picked up until Wednesday. Please have your carts accessible starting Tuesday.

Snow removal and other emergency services always will be provided regardless of the holidays.

For non-emergency city service requests during the holiday week, email or call my office and leave a message (email:ward49@cityofchicago.org; phone: 773-338-5796). We will return your email or telephone message promptly on Tuesday, January 2nd, and address your issue then.

If you have a city service request that requires immediate attention, please call 311. Of course, if you have a police, fire, or medical emergency, you should always call 911.

I hope that the year ahead is filled with hope, health and happiness for you and your family.

Illinois Drives People Away.

If Republicans succeed in limiting the state-and-local tax deduction, one hope is that this could finally inspire a come-to-Jesus moment in prodigal high-tax states. Democrats in Illinois ought to be especially chastened by new IRS data showing an acceleration of out-migration.

The Prairie State lost a record $4.75 billion in adjusted gross income to other states in the 2015 tax year, according to recently IRS data released. That’s up from $3.4 billion in the prior year. Many of the migrants were retirees who often flock to balmier climes. But millennials accounted for more than a third of the net outflow in tax returns.
While Florida with zero income tax was the top destination for Illinois expatriates, the Illinois Policy Institute notes that Illinois lost income and people on net to all of its neighbors—Wisconsin (6,000 people based on claimed exemptions), Indiana (8,200), Iowa (1,900), Missouri (2,000) and Kentucky (1,100). What’s the matter with Illinois?

Too much for us to distill in one editorial, but suffice to say that exorbitant property and business taxes have retarded economic growth. Illinois’s corporate tax rate is 9.5%, and pass-through business owners pay 6.45%. Though Illinois’s flat 4.95% income tax rate is relatively low compared to its neighbors, Democrats have found other ways to clobber their citizens.

Property taxes in Cook County and Chicago’s “collar” counties are the highest in the country outside of California and the Northeast. The average homeowner who moves from Lake County, Illinois, across the border to Kenosha County, Wisconsin would receive an annual $3,200 annual property tax cut. Taxes may increase as Democrats scrounge for cash to pay for pensions. Fitch Ratings reported this week that Illinois’s unfunded pension liabilitie

The Shared Cost Sidewalk Program is an extremely popular voluntary program in which property owners share the cost of sidewalk repair with the City. Thousands of Chicagoans have been a part of this popular program, taking advantage of the low cost, exceptional value, and ease of participation.

The Shared Cost Sidewalk Program cost per square foot charged to property owners is well below what a private contractor would charge. Senior citizens and persons with disabilities may qualify for a further discounted rate.

Applications will be taken on a first-come, first-served basis. The number of participants is based on availability of funds. The program typically reaches capacity quickly, so you are encouraged to apply early. Please note that if you applied for the program in previous years, you must apply again in 2018 if you wish to be considered for the 2018 program. Applications will only be accepted through the City’s 311 system by calling 311 or through the City’s service request website www.cityofchicago.org/311. The property owner’s contact information and the property address are required at the time of request.

Ira Silverstein makes up his own rules

It's embarrassing for those of us in the 9th Senatorial District that State Sen. Ira Silverstein has decided to run for re-election in the Democrat primary in March.

If he wins that primary, he'll glide into the November election, and he'll return to the General Assembly where he'll be called before an ethics committee to answer questions about his unsavory relationship with a female lobbyist.

Now this from a another Silverstein constituent who writes the 50th Ward Follies:

A friend just sent me a WBEZ report that Ira Silverstein served as lawyer for the father of Denise Rotheimer, his accuser in the sexual harassment scandal that cost him his leadership role in Springfield, during the tine she alleges the harassment occurred.

Worse, WBEZ’s Dave McKinney adds that Ira used his office on Devon–the one leased by the 50th Ward Democratic Organization–rather than his private law office to meet with the father, Philip Rotheimer, about a legal dispute over Rotheimer’s father’s estate. McKinney writes that an unnamed “…government watchdog group said hosting personal business on state property could pose a breach of ethics and a conflict of interest if a lawmaker also is doing legislative work on behalf of a client or client family member.”

Read the story. Then ask yourself: What was Ira thinking?

The valuable 50th Ward Follies reports that "Formal objections have been filed to the nominating petitions of each of the five candidates in the 8th District senatorial contest. Objectors don't have to admit that they are objecting in behalf of another candidate, and the candidates themselves rarely deign to be so open with the public.

Then there's Zehra Quadri, who filed objections to petitions for Ram Villivalam and Caroline McAteer-Fournier in her own name. Good for you, Zehra, it shows integrity and courage. Leaders lead.

Rulings on objections will occur next week. Losers will have the opportunity to seek judicial review if they believe the State BOE made the wrong decision. If there are no appeals to the judiciary, then the Board's decisions stand.

Petitions were filed by Ira Silverstein, Ram Villivalam, Zehra Quadri, Caroline McAteer-Fournier, and David Zulkey.

No worries? A Democrat has held that seat since dirt, and Democrats have dominated state and Chicago politics for decades, leaving the state with $22 bln. in unfunded public pension liabilities. Property taxes in Cook and Chicago are the highest in the US outside of Calif. and the Democrat-dominated Northeast. And we have "no worries" that an ethically challenged Democrat will waltz into his umpteenth term to represent us in the 8th Senatorial district?

Willye White Park to receive new mini soccer court

I am pleased to report that Willye White Park, located on Howard Street at Ashland, is one of 50 Chicago parks slated to receive a new soccer court, also known as a “mini pitch.” The soccer court will be the latest addition to the three-acre park, which is also home to the Park District’s newest fieldhouse.

The soccer court is scheduled to be constructed this spring immediately north of the fieldhouse on the site currently occupied by an outdoor basketball court. The basketball standards will remain and the surface can easily double as a basketball court.

I was not aware that this was going to be a multi-level extension. I hope that the developer is using bird safe glass. Or taking other precautions to make the building bird safe. It saddens me to no end walking past these buildings in our beautiful neighborhood and finding dead and stunned birds from window collisions. There is no reason for it.

I would vote for bullet proof glass over bird safe glass.
