New West Ridge library growing fast, seeks residents' memories

Here's an excellent article by a reporter familiar to West Ridge, Linze Rice, about the new library at Western and Pratt. BlockClub is a worthy successor to the much-missed DNAInfo.

  • Block club is good; Rice is a good reporter except for one mistake: the senior citizen housing is not "affordable" housing--a euphemism--it is subsidized housing forcibly extracted from taxpaying citizens making their housing more unaffordable.

Lost kitty named Tabitha

Our 1 year old kitten seems to have gotten out of the house. She's an indoor cat and very friendly. Please help us find her. Our little girl is heartbroken

  • Any update? If you haven't already post/look on Lost Cats of Illinois on Facebook

  • No updates. Will try that too thank you

  • I'm not sure where you are at, but I have seen a young cat, who looks lost a couple times around the 1200 - 1300 block of Elmdale. It's only at night, so I haven't been able to get a close look at the markings, but the build is slight.

A 44-year-old woman is charged with setting last week’s fire at an apartment building on Touhy, just east of Clark, that caused the death of another woman when she jumped from the top floor of the building.

The Cook County State’s Attorney’s office charged Margaret Reed, a Lincoln Square resident, with two counts of murder and a count of aggravated arson–all felonies. She is being held without bail.

Reed is believed to be the person who set the fire last Tuesday morning behind 1745 W. Touhy. Surveillance cameras recorded Reed at the site of the fire shortly before it started, leading detectives to interview her.

In the meantime, the victims of the fire need your help. The fire displaced 34 people, including nine children. Many were left literally with only the clothes on their backs.

My office, working with Northside Community Resources, created a donation page through which Rogers Park neighbors can provide financial support to the victims. The money raised will be used to provide the families with help on a security deposit and first month’s rent, plus clothing and basic household items.

Fire Commissioner Jose Santiago tells me fire fighters heard smoke detector alarms as they entered the building. It is not known at this time whether the smoke detector in the victim's apartment was operating.

The fire started in a dumpster behind the building and quickly went up the wooden back stairs. Fire inspectors are currently attempting to determine whether the fire was accidental or set deliberately.

I will update you as I receive more information.

Hello Parents!!

I have full and part time openings in my small group Daycare in my home in W Rogers Park!

I am 27, with dual degrees in early Childhood Education and Special Education.I have been a private Nanny for nearly 7 years to children with special needs and those without, before I decided to branch out on my own. I offer a weekly curriculum with books and activities daily. 2 Healthy meals and 2 snacks. I am just across the street from an open grass area and a short walk from a playground. I have 1 part time assistant and will hire another when needed.

With small group care children remain at a ratio of 3:1*, which means children receive much more individualized care an attention, and are broken up into groups based on age and ability.

With the warm weather fast approaching we will spend outside playing with chalk, at the playground, having water play time, free play, bubbles and so much more!

I have weekly, fultime, part time and drop in rates. Feel free to message me and check out Laugh Learn and Play with Nasha on Facebook to see the space and some of the activities!

******I am running a special the week of June 26th through July 6th*****

Hope to hear from you soon!

It is the first privately-financed, market rate development on Howard Street east of the CTA tracks in decades.

The development is being constructed as a matter of right. No zoning change, variance or special use permit is required. At my request, the developers presented their plans to the community at an “informational meeting” held in April, 2017.

Moving into this area! Thoughts

We have lived in the city for 27 years, and are thinking of the area of Damen and Jarvis.

  • diana Life is short. Death is long. Act accordingly.

To clarify: we're only moving because we want a yard and more dogs! Third floor condo isn't very conducive for being crazy dog people! :)

  • Anne Rogers Park resident

I walked a dog in that neighborhood for a couple of months. Some blocks are nice, others not so much. I did notice a lot of dog waste and garbage around the area. In general, its nice during the day but I have no idea what its like at night. Parking is difficult.

City crews to combat mosquitoes this week in West Ridge

Crews working with the Chicago Department of Public Health this week will be dropping “larvicide” in catch basins in the West Ridge community (located west of Ridge Blvd.). This annual activity is done to decrease the number of mosquitoes that can transmit the West Nile virus.

Catch basin treatment in West Ridge will take about one week to complete. No spraying will take place at this time.

The Rogers Park community (located east of Ridge Blvd.) is NOT being treated because mosquitoes that carry the West Nile virus are not present close to Lake Michigan.

For more information on this effort, visit:

Chicago Math and Science Academy earns top honors from U.S. News as #1 ranked charter school

Rogers Park’s own Chicago Math and Science Academy (CMSA) is the number 1 ranked charter high school in Illinois according to U.S. News & World Report’s “Best High Schools” annual report.

The report also ranked CMSA number 10 among all Chicago’s 105 non-selective enrollment schools and number 69 among all 670 public high schools in Illinois.

In addition, CMSA was one of only 115 high schools schools in Illinois to receive U.S. News & World Reports’ coveted Bronze Medal, which is awarded to “high-performing schools based on state exam performance.”

CMSA’s rankings are all the more impressive given that its students do not come from privileged backgrounds.

Ninety-eight percent of CMSA students are non-white and 95% qualify for free or reduced lunch, which means they come from families with incomes at or below 185% of the poverty income threshold. The vast majority of the students come from Rogers Park families where neither parent attended college.

I agree Live. The concern is regarding the ones that are not doing a good job and are public charter schools. It's important that all schools in Chicago do an excellent job, which will keep families here vs. moving to the suburbs in order for their children to receive better a education. That benefits both the students and our city. Select schools are difficult to get into, even for excellent students - I know, we tried to get our son into Lane... but so many applied, I believe less than 25% actually made it and the percentage could be less.

The goal should be to raise the bar and bring all Chicago public schools up to the select level.

One problem we face is that children in he poorer neighborhoods or even many of the better areas of the city, do not get the support they need from their parents, which is unfortunate and I certainly don't know how to fix that, yet I recognize it's broken.

As previously stated, my son went to Rickover Naval Academy, which is a Chicago Public School, not a select, magnet or charter school... and one of the primary benefits of going there was the support given to them by the US Navy personnel onsite as well as additional money from the Navy to support their education, which was disciplined, yet not as military as one might think.

Although Chicago public schools and public charter schools are allowed to stand side by side, there exist under performing charter schools, and they should be closed and the students and the money that goes along with each one of them, should be put into the Chicago public school.

CMAS is example of a great public charter school, while there are others that are only in it for the money and generate under performing students.

  • robin in WRP I support a 28th Amendment 4Free & Fair Elections!

Charter schools can hire non-qualified teachers. On average, charters do not out-perform "regular" public schools.
What we need is a way to replicate the quality of resources at high performing schools (both neighborhood and selective enrollment) across CPS

Learn how to appeal your property tax assessment and possibly lower your tax bill at a special workshop sponsored by Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin, Cook County Assessor Joe Berrios and my office. The workshop will be held TONIGHT (Wednesday, May 2nd), 6:30 p.m., at the Loyola Park Fieldhouse, 1230 W. Greenleaf (in the first floor east gymnasium).

The assessed value of your property is one of the factors that determine the amount of property taxes you pay. This assessed value is determined by the Cook County Assessor.

The Assessor’s office last week mailed notices of the assessments to every property owner in Rogers Park. On average, Rogers Park home owners were hit with a 19.2% increase in the assessed value of their home. Some, of course, were hit with an even greater percentage increase.

Though it's a sign of an improving neighborhood, this significant increase in the assessed value of our property undoubtedly will result in an increase in our property taxes.

You should not pay more than you are legally required to pay. If you believe your property assessment is improper, you have a right to appeal that assessment.

Come to the meeting tonight to find out how.

  • Beezil perfectly summed it up!

  • Rob

Good Neighbor - Summed up what? That some folks don't know the difference between a tax rate and a property assessment?

DIY wood sign workshop opens in Evanston

Valko and Spengler co-own another Evanston business, Little Beans Café, located at 430 Asbury Ave. Valko said Evanston is a “creative town,” and owning the cafe and children’s playspace in the city helped her decide to open up another business locally.

This article has 2 other Chicago locations (Show)

Valko owns Board & Brush — a national chain that now has a location at 802 Dempster St. — with her husband, Drew Valko, and brother, Rob Spengler. Customers can create a personalized wood...

Although Bottle & Bottega — located at 1016 Davis St. — offers a similar experience combining wine and painting, Valko said Board & Brush differs in the types of craft activities it offers, and it’s more individualized.

Workshops at Board & Brush - a wood sign creative studio that opened in Evanston on Saturday - are "kind of like a party," said co-owner Shannon Valko. "We have loud music and music videos blasting, and we do have beer, wine, soda, water," she said. "It's a really social, creative atmosphere."

Leona's has a baby grand. I'll need their contact info. Indian Boundary actually CHARGES you to have the privilege of giving a concert, so that's out. Harold Washington has one. Thank you for the phone #. I'll have to follow up on that. As for the others, I'll have to follow up on them as well. Thank you all for your advice and suggestions!

  • Theodore Kruzich Senior Citizen of 84 years

The coordinator of activities for St. Nicholas Church is Andrea (847-864-1185). Call her and submit your request as well as telling her the exact date of your recital. She has the authority to advertise and help in putting on such a concert. Use my name as a reference: I play violin in a chamber music group who uses the chapel on a regular basis ... Ted

A Spanish language Neighborhood Assembly will be held Wednesday night at St. Jerome’s Church Parish Center, 1709 W. Lunt

Each year I receive over $1 million to spend on infrastructure projects in our ward. Rather than decide on my own how to spend the money, I turn that power over to the people of the 49th Ward who decide by a direct vote how the money should be spent.

Meet with your neighbors tonight to learn how the process works and begin to brainstorm about the projects you believe our ward needs.

You and your neighbors will learn about Participatory Budgeting, the process where the taxpayers vote directly on how to spend a portion of a government budget, and begin to share your ideas about the kind of infrastructure projects you believe the neighborhood needs.
