3 Squares Diner In The Lawrence House Slated To Open June 5

The beautiful interior of 3 Squares Diner (Facebook)

3 Squares Diner In The Lawrence House Slated To Open June 5
Opening day is almost here. After jumping through all of the city's hoops needed to open a new restaurant with liquor, 3 Squares Diner has set the tentative opening date as June 5. If you'd like to join the 3 Squares family, they are hosting an open call for bartender, server, host, line cook, prep cook, busser, & dishwasher.

The United Colors of Uptown

Ald. Cappleman tweeted today:

    The United Colors of Uptown
Ald. Cappleman tweeted today: "This gives everyone an idea of what the 17' sculpture in front of the Riv will look like. The sculpture can be lit at night (and also turned off) and will be a great addition to highlighting our Entertainment District. Installation will be after the July 4th weekend."
    https://www.uptownupdate.com

  • Murals aren't Uptown's strength but they don't need it with major pieces from internationally acclaimed artists like Thompson and Balmond. "Arpeggio" is a blockbuster of a piece in the nicely restored Gerber building. The Alderman, with support from City Hall and the CTA, is executing a brilliant plan of bringing major art to Uptown. Every community, especially those with entertainment districts as in Uptown, need that. It also provides inspiration for the area's younger or less experienced or less talented artists who are struggling to find their groove.

  • Jeffrey Littleton Sheridan Park Neighbors Administrator/Local Artist

Since someone brought it up is the mile of murals a full mile yet?
It is or very close to by now.

The CPD spokesperson tweeted late Thursday: "Yesterday & overnight, CPD, @FBIChicago & @ATFHQ began precision raids against gang affiliated organized crime in advance of #Memorial Day Weekend. 71 arrests, 13 guns seized, 7 search warrants executed, 2 cars & $55,650 seized."

Status Check: Broadway & West Sheridan Transformation Continues

Viridian on Sheridan in the foreground as DLG's "Eagles" Development rises (Carey Wintergreen)

Status Check: Broadway & West Sheridan Transformation Continues
A corner of the 46th Ward that has truly undergone a massive transformation is Broadway and West Sheridan. "Viridan on Sheridan" has topped out on a spot that you might remember as the home of a defunct gas station for many years. BJB's rehab of 3838 N.

  • Unbelievable what happened once 3838 N. Broadway was renovated. It really opened the floodgates of change on that corner.

  • Wasn't that built on an old abandoned gas station? This is quite an improvement!

33-Unit Rental Building Rises on Sheridan, While Surrounding Area Booms

Progress at 4424 North Sheridan Road, as of Wednesday

33-Unit Rental Building Rises on Sheridan, While Surrounding Area Booms
Work continues on the 33-unit residential rental building going up at Sheridan and Agatite. We love the vintage look of the salvaged Chicago common bricks being used on the exterior. The two lots on which it is being built stood empty for nearly half a century until work began late last year.

How safe is the area near Lawrence/Racine, Racine/Broadway/Lawrence?

I recently signed a short-term sublet here for the summer after trying to do as much research as I could and surveying the area when I went to visit the unit. However, a building nearby, the Darlington Hotel, is apparently a shelter/drug trade haven? For some reason, given the non-activity during the day and run-down nature of the building, I assumed it was just abandoned.

Any info or tips I should keep in mind as a petite single woman, aside from the usual requisite city vigilance? Or is it/will it be extremely bad (given summer is on the horizon) to the point I should look for another subletter?

    Joe,
Katie's article is 100% correct. It stems from national laws Realtors have to follow to prevent a practice known as "steering". It was what realtors did to segregate the population up until the civil rights movement was able to change that. Steering was largely done by telling people that a neighborhood wasn't "safe" or the schools weren't "good". I can recommended that S (the short term tenant) check out the CPD Crime map. http://gis.chicagopolice.org/clearmap/startpage.htm The downside to the map is that there is so much crime all across the city, even in neighborhoods you would't expect. It can be a little terrifying to see all of the crimes plotted out. The upside is that you can pick the specific crimes that your'e most worried about to map.

While I hate it when a question goes off topic, I have to seriously question the fair housing act. The link states "The law protects against discrimination based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability or family status. In particular, it prohibits any real estate professional from steering prospective homebuyers or renters toward or away from a community based on any of the classes under federal protection."

So, maybe I am being nieve, but this ruling, written in 1968, basically states that crime equates with race (example given in the article). I think this is wrong thinking. It is 1968 panic thinking and implies that, under the FHA, crime and criminals ARE a protected class? Under Federal Protection? I think that is a leap in reasoning that is specifically not stated.

    So I read the act.
    https://www.hud.gov/sites/documents/HUD_OGCGUIDAPPFHASTANDCR.PDF

It states you are not allowed to discriminate against people with a criminal record. (and equates crime and race, by the way)

The FHA/HUD ruling states that a realtor may not "Steer" a customer. (OK, stop that laughing in the back of the class, nudge, nudge, know what I mean?) That is what the law states. But if a customer should ask, you should morally give them the source for the data they seek, without supplying it yourself, therefore meeting the letter of the law and your professional and moral obligation. That is not against the FHA/HUD regulations. Only your need to move the merchandise out the door.

And if you lose a sale because you did the right thing? Well, my father used to say that doing the right thing sometimes hurts like hell, but do it anyway. Because people not doing the right thing will make the world go to hell in a handbasket.

That explains a lot about how the world is now.
