City Council Votes Tomorrow on Police Academy

Tomorrow, Emanuel will be asking the City Council to approve spending $95 million for a new Police Academy that will include a new shooting range and a pool. Emanuel claims this facility is called for by the DOJ investigation of the CPD. Not true. The report calls for training to "ensure consistency with CPD policy and current law, particularly with respect to the use of force..." This could be accomplished in any of the many public school buildings that Emanuel has closed, and certainly does not require any new facility - let alone, one that will cost $95 million +.

Thoughts?

Who's afraid of bankruptcy for Chicago?

Some of us Chicagoans are resigned to the inevitability of bankruptcy of Chicago. This study by a non-partisan fiscal research group gives courage to face the future.

https://www.truthinaccounting.org/news/detail/did-city-government-bankruptcy-hurt-detroits-economy

Did city government bankruptcy hurt Detroit's economy?
The chart below shows total employment from 2005 to 2017 in the Detroit-Dearborn-Warren metropolitan statistical area, compared to employment in the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metro area. The chart indexes employment in both areas to July 2013 = 1.0, which gets both areas (one larger than the other) in the same neck of the woods in the chart and also allows you to compare the Chicago and Detroit metro areas since the latter declared bankruptcy.
    https://www.truthinaccounting.org
  • YakovBok In the RP for a long time

Those afraid of bankruptcy are those afraid of losing the public tit on which they feed.

  • PTM DJ/MC

So is this study a conclusion that bancrupcy is good? Why would that be? In many of the graphs it is a difference in the tenths of a percent, comparing a post bankruptcy municipality with Chicago? What am I missing here.

  • Michael Archangel First - 13 Russian nationals; Next - US enablers

@YakovBok - Are you able to expand on that thought? As it reads, it simply seems like an ideologically-based comment. Certainly you intended it as more, did you not? Who are the "they" and how will bankruptcy (which is a tool that allows for the restructuring of debt) change the dynamic?

It is the first privately-financed, market rate development on Howard Street east of the CTA tracks in decades.

The development is being constructed as a matter of right. No zoning change, variance or special use permit is required. At my request, the developers presented their plans to the community at an “informational meeting” held in April, 2017.

Moving into this area! Thoughts

We have lived in the city for 27 years, and are thinking of the area of Damen and Jarvis.

  • diana Life is short. Death is long. Act accordingly.

To clarify: we're only moving because we want a yard and more dogs! Third floor condo isn't very conducive for being crazy dog people! :)

  • Anne Rogers Park resident

I walked a dog in that neighborhood for a couple of months. Some blocks are nice, others not so much. I did notice a lot of dog waste and garbage around the area. In general, its nice during the day but I have no idea what its like at night. Parking is difficult.

Dear neighbors, I am looking for 1-2 *wide-mouthed* one-pint mason jars with lids for a project. I can trade you normal mason jars if you like. Thanks!

  • Hey Stephanie, they sell them at some Target stores; I saw them on the Target website. I think they are sold by the dozen, which might be more than you need, but they're useful for a lot of things.

City crews to combat mosquitoes this week in West Ridge

Crews working with the Chicago Department of Public Health this week will be dropping “larvicide” in catch basins in the West Ridge community (located west of Ridge Blvd.). This annual activity is done to decrease the number of mosquitoes that can transmit the West Nile virus.

Catch basin treatment in West Ridge will take about one week to complete. No spraying will take place at this time.

The Rogers Park community (located east of Ridge Blvd.) is NOT being treated because mosquitoes that carry the West Nile virus are not present close to Lake Michigan.

For more information on this effort, visit:

Lost Golden Lab/Retriever

I met a woman last night who was looking for a friend's lost dog. I can't remember exactly whether she said it was a golden lab or a golden retriever. A large dog in any case. Has anyone seen this lost dog? I hope she has found her dog, but if not, the dog went missing at Albion and Bosworth. Unfortunately, I have forgotten the owner's exact address. It would be easy to locate the owner by knocking on a few doors. Or, if you have spotted the dog, feel free to message me.

I need a good reliable contractor who does shake shingle siding work, not faux vinyl panels, but actual shake shingle siding. Recommendations with references are appreciated.
Thanks!

In addition, CMSA was one of only 115 high schools schools in Illinois to receive U.S. News & World Reports’ coveted Bronze Medal, which is awarded to “high-performing schools based on state exam performance.”

CMSA’s rankings are all the more impressive given that its students do not come from privileged backgrounds.

Ninety-eight percent of CMSA students are non-white and 95% qualify for free or reduced lunch, which means they come from families with incomes at or below 185% of the poverty income threshold. The vast majority of the students come from Rogers Park families where neither parent attended college.

I agree Live. The concern is regarding the ones that are not doing a good job and are public charter schools. It's important that all schools in Chicago do an excellent job, which will keep families here vs. moving to the suburbs in order for their children to receive better a education. That benefits both the students and our city. Select schools are difficult to get into, even for excellent students - I know, we tried to get our son into Lane... but so many applied, I believe less than 25% actually made it and the percentage could be less.

The goal should be to raise the bar and bring all Chicago public schools up to the select level.

One problem we face is that children in he poorer neighborhoods or even many of the better areas of the city, do not get the support they need from their parents, which is unfortunate and I certainly don't know how to fix that, yet I recognize it's broken.

As previously stated, my son went to Rickover Naval Academy, which is a Chicago Public School, not a select, magnet or charter school... and one of the primary benefits of going there was the support given to them by the US Navy personnel onsite as well as additional money from the Navy to support their education, which was disciplined, yet not as military as one might think.

Although Chicago public schools and public charter schools are allowed to stand side by side, there exist under performing charter schools, and they should be closed and the students and the money that goes along with each one of them, should be put into the Chicago public school.

CMAS is example of a great public charter school, while there are others that are only in it for the money and generate under performing students.

  • robin in WRP I support a 28th Amendment 4Free & Fair Elections!

Charter schools can hire non-qualified teachers. On average, charters do not out-perform "regular" public schools.
What we need is a way to replicate the quality of resources at high performing schools (both neighborhood and selective enrollment) across CPS

My decision on the proposed new restaurant and bar at 1631 W. Howard

I am writing to inform you of my decision to support a proposal for a restaurant and bar at 1631 W. Howard (just east of the Howard Red Line station).

Salerno’s Restaurants, a family-owned chain of Italian eateries with locations throughout the Chicago area, including its flagship location at Grand and Racine, is opening its 11th restaurant in the storefront formerly occupied by Little Unicoco, a Nigerian restaurant, which closed last year.

Rob Salerno, a second generation member of the Salerno family, will oversee the day-to-day operations of the new restaurant, which will be called “Whiskey Hill Brewing & Smokehouse by Salerrno’s.” The new restaurant will serve both barbecue and the Italian food for which Salerno’s has become famous. Mr. Salerno also intends to offer a full bar, including beer selections from his own Whiskey Hill Brewery.

For more information, including the zoning change Mr. Salerno needs to operate his new restaurant, visit:

Taking our budget back...one sign at a time

Our fellow everyblock Rogers park neighbors have pointed out the the pavement markings and signage indicating end of block no parking are unnecessary. People should just know it's illegal and we can save the money by not maintaining these indicators. Join us in helping remove these from the neighborhood as they are wasting unnecessary moneys that could fund things like basketball hoops for the kids.
please help identify unnecessary signs around rogers park and post them so we can create a list.

d3, up above, you even directed a comment to Joe, although there is no Joe on this thread. It's been obvious for some time that you think that Live is the alderman, which I find rather hilarious but it just shows your mentality. And is it any of your business what time I'm on EveryBlock? I won't deny that I generally support the alderman, but I don't work for or take orders from him.

  • d3 NoHo

What's irrational is the sign west of the driveway, which btw mentions nothing of the corner.

Thank you to the anonymous donor

In the attached photo, Jesse Hotaling, our Assistant Branch Manager at the Rogers Park Library, is preparing new books to be put on the shelves of our Children's Library. Many of these books were donated by an anonymous donor who delivered them at our Spring Fling Book Book Sale on April 28, 2018. The Friends of the Rogers Park Library thank the many donors who contributed to our book sale. They are making sure that our Rogers Park Library can continue its mission of Read, Learn, Discover!

If you missed one of the earlier PB49 Neighborhood Assemblies where 49th Ward residents are coming up with ideas on how to spend the ward’s $1 million discretionary budget, you have your chance tonight to get in on the action! Join your neighbors and me at the next 49th Ward Participatory Budgeting Neighborhood Assembly TONIGHT (Monday, April 30th) at the Pottawattomie Park Fieldhouse, 7340 N. Rogers (just west of the Metra tracks). Pizza courtesy of J.B. Alberto’s Pizza, will be served at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting will start promptly at 7:00 p.m. You and your neighbors will learn about Participatory Budgeting, the process where the taxpayers vote directly on how to spend a portion of a government budget, and begin to share your ideas about the kind of infrastructure projects you believe the neighborhood needs. For more information, including a schedule of other upcoming Neighborhood Assemblies, visit: https://www.ward49.com/news/you-have-another-chance-tonight-to-decide-how-to-spend-some-of-your-tax-dollars-2/

Learn tonight how to appeal your property tax assessment

Learn how to appeal your property tax assessment and possibly lower your tax bill at a special workshop sponsored by Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin, Cook County Assessor Joe Berrios and my office. Learn how to appeal your property tax assessment and possibly lower your tax bill at a special workshop sponsored by Cook County Commissioner Larry Suffredin, Cook County Assessor Joe Berrios and my office. The workshop will be held TONIGHT (Wednesday, May 2nd), 6:30 p.m., at the Loyola Park Fieldhouse, 1230 W. Greenleaf (in the first floor east gymnasium).

The assessed value of your property is one of the factors that determine the amount of property taxes you pay. This assessed value is determined by the Cook County Assessor.

The Assessor’s office last week mailed notices of the assessments to every property owner in Rogers Park. On average, Rogers Park home owners were hit with a 19.2% increase in the assessed value of their home. Some, of course, were hit with an even greater percentage increase.

Though it's a sign of an improving neighborhood, this significant increase in the assessed value of our property undoubtedly will result in an increase in our property taxes.

You should not pay more than you are legally required to pay. If you believe your property assessment is improper, you have a right to appeal that assessment.

Come to the meeting tonight to find out how.

  • Beezil perfectly summed it up!

  • Rob

Good Neighbor - Summed up what? That some folks don't know the difference between a tax rate and a property assessment?

Join me in opposing the closure of the Belmont and Western courthouse

I urge you to join me in opposition to the planned closure of the branch courthouse, located at 2452 W. Belmont (at Western).

The courtrooms at the Belmont and Western courthouse hear preliminary felony and misdemeanor cases for Chicago’s north side neighborhoods, including Rogers Park. Under the proposal, most of the cases heard at Belmont and Western would be shifted to the courthouse at Harrison and Kedzie and a few might be heard at the Skokie courthouse on Old Orchard Road.

To learn how you can help me in opposing this misguided plan, visit:
