Residential street sweeping extended to Friday, Dec. 8, weather permitting

The City’s Department of Streets and Sanitation is extending its residential street sweeping program until Friday, December 8th, weather permitting. This means the 49th Ward’s street sweeper will continue clearing away the fall leaves and debris from residential streets in the ward, assuming we do not experience any snowfall.

For more information, including a copy of the 49th Ward’s street sweeping map and the updated schedule, visit:

Gunshots and more gunshots...

Just now (3am Sat) we heard a series of about 10 shots east of Clark and Devon. Tuesday night we heard shots coming from the same direction but a bit further away. Anyone else hear this and did anyone hear anything about the Tuesday incident?

  • Bill Morton President, Rogers Park Chamber of Commerce

Did you report this to the police?

  • Yes. Tuesday we heard lots of sirens almost immediately afterward but last night we did not, even after reporting.

Saturday Apartment Search

A friend has a job interview this Friday that might mean he could be looking for an apartment Saturday but he is unsure of his schedule. Do you know landlords or apartment brokers that take walk-ins on Saturdays?

  • My new landlord probably would. Call 773.507.9668. They have several buildings in Rogers Park and Edgewater. They may all be 2 bedroom though.

  • You can also try my landlord. He has an apartment available.
You can text or call him at 773-510-2271. His name is John.

Will Binny's be a short drive away?

Some of us, especially those on the north end of RP, have been missing Evanston's Whole Foods South store since it closed in March. Binny's is interested in the site. Wonder what the neighbors up there will think of that.

Binny's Proposed For Former Whole Foods Site
EVANSTON, IL - A libational replacement for the shuttered Whole Foods store at 1111 Chicago Ave. in Evanston is being considered, as Binny's Beverage Depot is interested in moving into the site. A community meeting has been scheduled by 3rd Ward Alderman Melissa Wynne for next week to discuss the plans.

The only strings attached seem to be possible objections from the neighbors. There's no way I would drive to Lincolnwood to buy a few bottles of wine or beer, but a Binny's a mile north of me would be great.

Since Mr. Binstein himself turned up for Ald. Wynne's community meeting on Wednesday night, I think it safe to say that Binny's is seriously interested in this site. No surprise, the local liquor dealers, including Vinic, object to the competition.

Mayor Emanuel sponsored the measure and because it involved a real estate transaction, it came before the City Council Committee on Housing and Real Estate, which I chair.

Allow me to explain why I was one of the 48 alderman to support the proposal. Simply put, the new academy is a necessary step in the long road to reforming our broken Police Department.

The proposed public safety training academy is in direct response to the U.S. Justice Department’s call to improve police officer training procedures and facilities.

For a further explanation, please read my full statement on this important police reform issue:

Everyone had a free taste of Tequila Cazadores inspired tacos. This was a complement to our neighborhood restaurants, not competition. This celebrity event brought visitors to Rogers Park, who patronized both Empirical Brewery and Mayne Stage. This was not your regular for-profit, food truck, taking dollars back to where they came from, instead of being cycled throughout our community again.

It is good to have philanthropists visit the neighborhood. What I especially enjoy about Chef Aaron Sanchez, is that he launched the Aarón Sánchez Scholarship Fund, an initiative empowering aspiring chefs from the Latin community to follow their dreams and attend culinary school.

No, those recent tax hikes haven't improved Chicago's financial health

From Crain's Greg Hinz and Truth in Accounting:

In a report that City Hall won't like much, a Chicago-based watchdog group says hundreds of millions of dollars in recent tax hikes haven't done much to improve Chicago's woeful financial condition—at least so far.

Truth in Accounting, a somewhat conservative research group whose board runs the ideological spectrum, gives the city an F on its overall financial breakdown, saying each Chicagoan would be on the hook for $41,700 in unfunded liabilities if the city shut down tomorrow and had to reconcile its books—more than many people make in an entire year. Overall, it concludes that "Chicago finances (are) still in peril."

Venting

Speaking of parking issues in Rogers Park... an old gentleman across the street on North Shore has a designated handicap spot. When he returns from wherever, he parks in his spot. Then, as soon as an adjacent spot opens up he removes his placard from the window and moves his car there, taking up an extra space.

I fume every time I see this. What’s his deal? Does he just like an unobstructed view of the street? And, (yes, I know you can’t always tell), he doesn’t seem to have a disability.

It just apppears selfish and un-neighborly.

Conversation about dangerous intersection of Clark Street & Howard Street

Numerous auto accidents at the intersection of Clark Street and Howard Street, along the Chicago / Evanston border, have raised concerns over the public safety issue.

One noted case involved pedestrians. Would a clear turning lane, and a light to turn left help?

I am asking all of my friends, family to take a moment , remember what it was like to be 19 years old. Dating, competitive sports, traveling, working your first real job, nights with your friends, driving your first beater, getting lost finding your freshman college class, dreaming of your future.

Now in the midst of all of that fun, add fainting without warning, weight gain and swelling 10lb -20lbs in a matter of a few days, exhaustion not eliminated by a good night’s sleep, shoebox filled with daily medications, no salt diet, sneaking the seasoning packs from ramen, many visits to neurologists, cardiologists, nephrologists , twice weekly infusions to stabilize and countless blood draws.
Remember now you are 19 years old. This is the life my grandson Marco has dealt with since he was ten.
For him the attempts to stabilize his kidneys is over. Now we are in the race for his life, a race to give him the youth this disease has stolen.
We fear the tests, the surgery and the pain. But change your focus for a moment, our family fears Marco will not be able to drive or live independently to enjoy the gift of youth so many of us have enjoyed and taken for granted.
people of color needing organs, the closer the match- the better his odds of the transplant giving him the dreams he keeps tucked away for fear they will never be.

It’s a huge commitment, it’s a great sacrifice and not one of you should consider it lightly in anyway. But if you think you would like to donate, even if not for Marco, give that gift to someone else who is waiting to live their best life.

Either initiate permit parking or build a couple of parking garages, or even draw lines in the road to make sure people aren't greedily taking up multiples spots. I personally am affected by this because some nights I work until 12:30 am then have to be back at 10 am the next day.. I drive around some nights for 1-2 hours looking for parking and its never close by to where I live. I know others feel the same way.
Please please lets do something about this! With winter around the corner its only going to get much worse.

I'm don't know what any of Wazzup's prior comments have to do with someone else identifying where he lives. Even if someone does manage to lead a trail to their own door, that shouldn't suggest that it's good practice for someone else to do it, even if it's not being done maliciously.

Her dream was to always make a feature film, but as she said, “...I didn’t go to school for it so I felt like I shouldn’t.” However, after a death in her family, she knew she had to embrace her time and do what she really wanted. Her first feature film, so aptly timed to today’s conversation about sexual harassment in the film industry, was Off the Cuff, a mockumentary about sexism in the Chicago improv scene. Learning from this filmmaking endeavor, Hardy went on to make two more feature films with her husband Brent Kado under the auspices of their production company Flowfeel Films.

Now in its seventh year, the CCFF had a few obstacles in its path as Hardy met with some resistance being told that she should follow in the footsteps of a long-standing male director and not do things her own way. She confided, “I felt that we were being compared to things...and maybe we weren’t given a lot of credit in the beginning.” She continued, “[Now] we’ve built something really great and I think we’ve shown that we have great voices...”

Discounted Pet Microchips @ Pet Supplies Plus

remember - when you take your pet in for their shots - ask the Doctor or assistant to scan for the chip to make sure it is still readable. As pets grow sometimes the chip slides under the muscle and is not readable. That happened to my rescue so we inserted another chip - glad we discovered it. Just had the chip checked in October - all good. Not that I would ever let her ladyship off the leash! :-) except fenced dog area.

My dog had a chip inserted as a puppy. When we adopted him at 2 yrs, the vet at Uptown couldn't find it in the usual spot. We were told that if the pet is really active after the chipping that the microchip can migrate. Only after quite a while he finally found it down in the chest area. Not all vets would be so patient and could conclude he wasn't chipped. He need some surgery which would slow him down for a few days. It was a good time to have him re-chipped. It then stayed in placed for the rest of his life.

@ Tittleton - do not try to reduce the standard of living for those who worked hard for their homes and pay heavy taxes to live in an uncluttered beautiful neighborhood - and you will not be harassed. Tents and outdoor living environment does not contribute to the type of environment working good people want for their families. For those that do not expect city handouts the concept of clean and landscaped streets is not hard to understand. Jim Cappleman is the best thing to happen for Uptown - Helen Schiller was a disaster and created the gang and ghetto environment Alderman Cappleman is trying to correct. "Lifeline Theatre has been in its current home — a converted Commonwealth Edison substation on Glenwood Avenue, near the Morse Red Line stop — since 1985. Over time, it has become a flagship institution for what’s now called the Glenwood Avenue Arts District.

For Gregory Altman, 45, a 20-year resident of the neighborhood and owner of Rogers Park-based Chicago Condo Management and Maintenance Co., Lifeline has been just what the name implies. Altman can’t say for sure that the tenants and owners he works with are driven specifically to locate in Rogers Park by the presence of Lifeline or other cultural institutions, which have included, in recent years, the Mayne Stage on Morse and Theo Ubique Cabaret Theatre in the No Exit Cafe on Glenwood Avenue.

But, he said, “it certainly creates the positive foot traffic that weaves the fabric of the neighborhood. When we had nothing else happening around Glenwood and Morse, the critical mass of those theaters helped to build that kind of traffic around what was basically, at the time, a bedroom community with vacant storefronts.”

Living near the limelight: Some Chicagoans find local theaters add more value than expected
When scouting locations for a new home, buyers and renters generally take into account proximity to schools, shopping and transit networks. But in an area like Chicago that never stops bragging - and with good reason - about its lively performing arts scene (which kicks into high gear with the fall season), there's an increasing awareness that theaters are an added value for residents.

Joe Moore, Alderman of Chicago's 49th Ward ad...

Cozy up to the kiln and join me for some hot chocolate and pastries as I head to the Glenwood Avenue Arts District to welcome the newest addition to the Rogers Park arts scene. Follow Me on Friday to Nodd Pottery, 7063 N. Glenwood, this Friday, November 10th, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. After years of directing at other art studios and teaching preschool and kindergarten, Nodd Pottery founder, Sarah Ortlieb (see photo on below), decided that pottery was her true calling. Nodd Pottery is a non-profit organization that provides affordable and accessible art education for our community and its youth. Nodd Pottery offers a regular beginners pottery class called Learning to Center every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings and an after-school enrichment program, “Art About You,” for children between the ages of six and 17. Nodd Pottery’s doors are open Fridays and Saturdays from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. for “Community Open Studio,” during which members of the community can walk in and exercise their own creativity with technical guidance and assistance. Nodd Pottery also offers private lessons, community workshops and kiln rental space for local artists. Sarah works with artists of all ages and capacities, including mentally disabled artists for whom she provides commissions that they can use to generate personal income. “I believe strongly in equal opportunity education as well as the importance of the arts in the life-long development of the individual,” says Sarah. “I aim to help others learn the communication skills they need, whether verbal or otherwise, to define and achieve success and happiness in their lives.” Enjoy some hot chocolate, marshmallows and pastries on a chilly late autumn day and check out Sarah’s studio where you’ll find a wide assortment of pottery. Get an early start on your holiday shopping at Nodd Pottery! Follow Me on Friday is one of my efforts to encourage my constituents to sample some of the 49th Ward’s finest restaurants, pubs, businesses and festivals. About once or twice a month on my Facebook page, I post the name and location of a local restaurant, pub, business or festival where I’ll be hanging out after work on Friday. The establishment offers specials for all my Facebook followers and their friends. It’s a great opportunity for you to check out one of the fine local 49th Ward businesses you may not have visited before. Previous Follow Me on Friday locations include Ethiopian Diamond II, 7537 N. "Well, I uh I uh, I don't do estimates. You know what I mean? You want me to work or not, I don't do estimates".

Wow, just wow. And I go to their website and see they do electrical and plumbing but cannot find a license for either on the city's website. Not sure if they even actually have a home repair license. And the company web site says they do have free estimates. Not according to the guy on the phone they don't. Thank you for asking "Live From Rogers Park". The expansion to our new office needed to happen. Our old office at 7231 N Sheridan Road only had room for one desk. Our new office has three large desks and plenty of room. We purchased all of the office furniture and equipment from the previous business, so that we could quickly move in and get right to work, without spending too much time on office design and arrangement.

Another improvement at our new office (7101 N Glenwood Avenue), is that we now have a service window and reception desk to address community questions and needs.

An interesting aspect of the move, was when we had to remove a storefront window to get our two commercial Konica Minolta (bizhub 200 & bizhub C220) copy machines in. That cost us a bit, to synchronize both Ardmore Glass and The Professionals Moving Specialists for the delivery.

Recent developments include the networking of our computers and installation of our 8 camera security system by Kris Luck of Quest Network Services.

Our campaign, which was a combination of three fundraiser events per week, a membership drive, and gofundme, was enough to facilitate the move and get us started at our new home.

  • is this the new campaign headquarters, Bill?

No more DNA info.

    November 2, 2017
A lot of what I believed would happen did, but not all of it. Today, DNAinfo and Gothamist deliver news and information each day to over half a million people's email inboxes; we have over 2 million fans across our social channels; and each month, we have over 15 million visits to our sites by over 9 million people.

  • d3 NOH

It's suprising dnainfo did not actually do paid infotainment ads since all of their 'x restaurant coming soon' pieces were opinionated gushy PR pieces.

But in 2017 if you are in media not selling ads for videos you are going to lose the bet ..and dna didn't even do video news. Dna had a flawed business model by modern media standards.

  • I suppose it will be relatively quiet for a while, since the DNAInfo/Gothamist employees will be paid for the next three months (unless they get another full-time job), but I hope there are already discussions going on in the background for those local news organizations to be acquired up by a more "professional" company - one not scared by unionized employees. I don't personally think profit was ever a significant part of Joe Rickets' goals for DNAInfo/Gothamist.

The Violent Gang Safe Streets Task Force became the vehicle through which all of the federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies joined together to address the violent crime plaguing their communities. The FBI’s Safe Streets and Gang Unit administers 160 Violent Gang Safe Streets Task Forces nationwide, staffed by nearly 850 FBI agents, more than 1,500 state and local law enforcement personnel, and nearly 100 other federal law enforcement agents.

These task forces pursue violent gangs through sustained, proactive, coordinated investigations to obtain prosecutions under the U.S. Code, Titles 18 and 21, including violations such as racketeering, drug conspiracy, and firearms violations.
