City Council Votes Tomorrow on Police Academy

Tomorrow, Emanuel will be asking the City Council to approve spending $95 million for a new Police Academy that will include a new shooting range and a pool. Emanuel claims this facility is called for by the DOJ investigation of the CPD. Not true. The report calls for training to "ensure consistency with CPD policy and current law, particularly with respect to the use of force..." This could be accomplished in any of the many public school buildings that Emanuel has closed, and certainly does not require any new facility - let alone, one that will cost $95 million +.

Thoughts?

Who's afraid of bankruptcy for Chicago?

Some of us Chicagoans are resigned to the inevitability of bankruptcy of Chicago. This study by a non-partisan fiscal research group gives courage to face the future.

https://www.truthinaccounting.org/news/detail/did-city-government-bankruptcy-hurt-detroits-economy

Did city government bankruptcy hurt Detroit's economy?
The chart below shows total employment from 2005 to 2017 in the Detroit-Dearborn-Warren metropolitan statistical area, compared to employment in the Chicago-Naperville-Elgin metro area. The chart indexes employment in both areas to July 2013 = 1.0, which gets both areas (one larger than the other) in the same neck of the woods in the chart and also allows you to compare the Chicago and Detroit metro areas since the latter declared bankruptcy.

Chicago's fiscal condition is not sustainable with current tax receipts: the compound growth of pensions alone will inevitably soak up available revenue. Raising and inaugurating new fees and fines are insufficient to meet the need, and lenders eventually will refuse to extend credit. The property tax or a city income tax are the only viable alternatives, and either one or both will send the majority of residents into poverty or drive taxpayers out of Chicago and Illinois. We residents left behind will demand relief from the burden of financing city government; teachers and public-safety workers will continue to refuse real reform. Bankruptcy will enable the city to renegotiate terms of its pensions and debt.

  • Michael Archangel First - 13 Russian nationals; Next - US enablers

@Dan Miller - Given past rulings by the Illinois courts relative to contractual obligation of the city to those pensions, I am afraid that the only legal option is bankruptcy protection. Although, that reality will be very cold comfort to those union members whose leadership negotiated those contracts with city leadership.

Hi! I am looking for a covered garage in or near Edgewater Glen for our 2013 Mini Cooper Clubman. Our current garage is being returned to its owner on June 1, so that's the day by which we're hoping to find a new garage. We can wait, however, if you don't have a garage open in June. I don't want to go through any apps or clearinghouse websites. I just want someone strong enough to come over soon and do this for a reasonable and normal basic handyman fee. (Abt, the merchant who sold me the hood, wants me to fork over an arm & a leg and wait a week--highway robbery even with a discount). PM me if you can do this.

Never touched the old ones before they failed, but will take your advice. Wonder why they don't make LEDs with that kind of socket--halogens burn very hot and suck a lot of power. LEDs are less delicate, too.

  • Range hood lights? So, definitely not inside oven? If they're not for inside oven use, you can replace with LED. The manufacturer will usually not be selling an LED replacement but you can buy one as long as you match the bulb socket type, diameter/width, length.

I've replaced an E17 T6-1/2 with an E17 LED that's shorter (diameter was important but length was not). I've also replaced the two 20W halogen bulbs (G-something, forgot type) under the OTR microwave oven with 3W LEDs. For this one, it wasn't just the Pins that mattered. The size and the shape of the base mattered.

I went to the first one in 1980, when I worked in the Loop--I don't recall how much it cost except it was much cheaper, you could try a bigger variety before you either filled up or ran out of tickets, and much of what was there was unique. Great lunchtime alternative to the ubiquitous Loop cookie-cutter Greek "coffee shop" luncheonettes. On the last day I remember I had a 25-cent ticket remaining, it was warm out, and one of the vendors didn't want to cart perishables back. So I got a flat of 12 containers of strawberry Yoplait (a brand and style new to Chicago, which had only Dannon at the time), put it in the office fridge, and drove it home after work. (But to this day I can't stand strawberry yogurt),

Nowadays, I go only when my knees can take standing around for hours and there's a musical act I want to go see. You have to jockey for a table to put your food & drink down while you stand, nearly half the items are fast-food from well-known restaurants available across the area year-round; and there are those stupid tickets! You can't buy only as many as you want, because the booklets contain odd quantities that are too few or too many. I end up either forgoing something I'd really wanted, compromising and eating something I wasn't really craving, or having leftover scrip to languish in a drawer (not knowing if they'd be usable next year) or to give to strangers. Last time we went (to see the Chieftains), so few items appealed to us that we actually ended up at a real restaurant in Millennium Park with normal portions, tables & chairs, metal utensils, glasses and servers. And we spent no more than had we eaten the same quantity of food standing up, spilling stuff on our clothes and sweltering,

It is the first privately-financed, market rate development on Howard Street east of the CTA tracks in decades.

The development is being constructed as a matter of right. No zoning change, variance or special use permit is required. At my request, the developers presented their plans to the community at an “informational meeting” held in April, 2017.

Curious just how far your dollar goes in Chicago? We've rounded up the latest rental offerings via rental site Zumper to get a sense of what to expect when it comes to finding housing in Chicago if you're on a budget of $1,300/month. Read on for the listings.

$ 1300 a month = $ 15,600 to your landlord and forever out of your pocket. $ 1300 towards your condo or home payment = $ 1300 to you as the landlord. Not difficult to understand. In 20 years you would have paid down $ 312,000 ! Did I mention you would also enjoy an increase in your real estate value. That is a lot of money in your! pocket.

  • If you don’t have the money on hand to start the process (at least half of society and I’m being generous) or the consistent income to maintain it and build an 8 month untouchable emergency reserve on hand, then it’s a non-starter. Plus people pick up and go a lot...

Plus people pick up and go a lot more than we did 30 years ago. If everything doesn’t go to plan you could end up in the red within 2 years. More variables than not have to be in your favor. I don’t think the majority of society can do it. Wages are the same as they were 15 years ago. It’s only going to get more out of reach.

City crews to combat mosquitoes this week in West Ridge

Crews working with the Chicago Department of Public Health this week will be dropping “larvicide” in catch basins in the West Ridge community (located west of Ridge Blvd.). This annual activity is done to decrease the number of mosquitoes that can transmit the West Nile virus.

Catch basin treatment in West Ridge will take about one week to complete. No spraying will take place at this time.

The Rogers Park community (located east of Ridge Blvd.) is NOT being treated because mosquitoes that carry the West Nile virus are not present close to Lake Michigan.

' I seem to recall that some past discussions about bike lanes (thinking about Glenwood in particular) were less than productive when people with strong biases, and not a lot of empathy, weighed in on the discussion.'

  • To the contrary, public meetings about bike lanes are highly productive when people clearly express their strong preferences and opinions so that decisions can be made. In some past meetings there was strong opinion that bicyclists requests and demands neither reflected the general feeling of a community nor were in the general best interest of a community. Democratic decision making requires votes and opinions which some call biases. Empathy isn't a requirement of the democratic process and never has been.

I'm not being argumentative. Just being pragmatic. I hope you won't be argumentative. We both are entitled to our own points of view. Claustrophobia, it's true, is not life-threatening in itself. Worst case scenarios: What if someone has a heart attack while stuck alone in an elevator for a long time? What if someone has a seizure and needs immediate medical attention? What if a pregnant woman is ready to give birth and no one is there to assist? Well, I could go on and on.

Among other things lacking in our society, I believe, is the lack of compassion for others. A lack of the milk of human kindness, if you will. Is our president a role model?

I have claustrophobia and can assure you I would go bonkers if I was confined in an elevator -you may not think it is life threatening but that just shows how ignorant people can be ".

Lost Golden Lab/Retriever

I met a woman last night who was looking for a friend's lost dog. I can't remember exactly whether she said it was a golden lab or a golden retriever. A large dog in any case. Has anyone seen this lost dog? I hope she has found her dog, but if not, the dog went missing at Albion and Bosworth. Unfortunately, I have forgotten the owner's exact address. It would be easy to locate the owner by knocking on a few doors. Or, if you have spotted the dog, feel free to message me.

Cedar siding contractor needed for exterior work

I own an old Victorian in the neighborhood (Rogers Park) that needs cedar shake shingle replacement on the 2nd story exterior. It also needs some light carpentry work in the process, trim replacement. It also has a turret.
I need a good reliable contractor who does shake shingle siding work, not faux vinyl panels, but actual shake shingle siding. Recommendations with references are appreciated.
Thanks!

  • I had similar work done on my home. I hired Agustin Rojas Roofing and they did a fantastic job. You can reach him at 773-425-7631.

The report also ranked CMSA number 10 among all Chicago’s 105 non-selective enrollment schools and number 69 among all 670 public high schools in Illinois.

In addition, CMSA was one of only 115 high schools schools in Illinois to receive U.S. News & World Reports’ coveted Bronze Medal, which is awarded to “high-performing schools based on state exam performance.”

CMSA’s rankings are all the more impressive given that its students do not come from privileged backgrounds.

Ninety-eight percent of CMSA students are non-white and 95% qualify for free or reduced lunch, which means they come from families with incomes at or below 185% of the poverty income threshold. The vast majority of the students come from Rogers Park families where neither parent attended college.

I agree Live. The concern is regarding the ones that are not doing a good job and are public charter schools. It's important that all schools in Chicago do an excellent job, which will keep families here vs. moving to the suburbs in order for their children to receive better a education. That benefits both the students and our city. Select schools are difficult to get into, even for excellent students - I know, we tried to get our son into Lane... but so many applied, I believe less than 25% actually made it and the percentage could be less.

The goal should be to raise the bar and bring all Chicago public schools up to the select level.

One problem we face is that children in he poorer neighborhoods or even many of the better areas of the city, do not get the support they need from their parents, which is unfortunate and I certainly don't know how to fix that, yet I recognize it's broken.

As previously stated, my son went to Rickover Naval Academy, which is a Chicago Public School, not a select, magnet or charter school... and one of the primary benefits of going there was the support given to them by the US Navy personnel onsite as well as additional money from the Navy to support their education, which was disciplined, yet not as military as one might think.

Although Chicago public schools and public charter schools are allowed to stand side by side, there exist under performing charter schools, and they should be closed and the students and the money that goes along with each one of them, should be put into the Chicago public school.

CMAS is example of a great public charter school, while there are others that are only in it for the money and generate under performing students.

  • robin in WRP I support a 28th Amendment 4Free & Fair Elections!

Charter schools can hire non-qualified teachers. On average, charters do not out-perform "regular" public schools.
What we need is a way to replicate the quality of resources at high performing schools (both neighborhood and selective enrollment) across CPS

Heated debate with my brother about Chicago

He clearly points out how violent Chicago is-I told him well he doesn't live here and gasp-people do like living here, not everyone is leaving. He thinks he knows the city just because he works in Stoney Island full-time and then goes back to his bubble in Indiana. I told him working here and living here are two different things. It's too bad the news doesn't talk about the good things in Chicago. They really know how to scare people. I don't even know what to say to him.

60660 Gal to answer your previous question yes that was the plan to move to Indiana. We reconsidered because we realized how much we loathed Indiana and how it doesn't fit into the lifestyle that we wanted,my biggest concerns was the schools for my daughter but we figured it out. We are glad we decided to stay. I don't think there truly is a perfect place out there. My husband's best friend left the country after living on the east coast, west coast and here and from an outsider he said Chicago is the best city no doubt. This is even saying this after almost getting robbed on the redline where he just punched the guy in the nose to defend himself.

  • AS..I agree there is no perfect place out there and we all have different places that match our lifestyles and what we want out of life. Everyones "best" is different. Glad you figured out your daughters school and decided to stay.
