Thanks Bill, maybe a good wake up call for the alderman to get a hold on crime in the area rising.

  • most of the time arena is confronted about crime, he touts that we are in one of the safest neighborhoods in Chicago. Which may be true.

most people think we should remain vigilant to keep it that way, and not take actions that may to contribute to crime. people are not stupid.

those people that have their idealist ideas of how things will work in the perfect world are not realistic and quite simply are naïve, have a personal agenda or simply just don't care.

City wants your input on Jefferson Park's future; meeting set for Jan. 22

Vision for Jefferson Park’s future will be on display at open house at 6:30 pm Monday, Jan. 22, at the Copernicus Center Annex, 5214 W. Lawrence Ave. The city wants your input.
http://nadignewspapers.com/2018/01/12/community-open-house-area-master-plan-set/

  • The City doesn't want our input. The City wants you to believe it wants your input. If the City were honest the headline would read "Chicago tells residents to pound sand, we'll do what we want and you'll like it."

  • I couldn't disagree more. Come on out and give an opinion. Otherwise you are right, there will not be any public input.

Sewer back-up & basement drain flooding

We are experiencing a basement drain flooding and sewer back up for a couple of days now. A plumber came to rode the pipes and pumped the backed up dirty water, but they can't get their rodding snake to get to the street - something is blocking it.
We wonder if this might be caused by the recent street utility work - some pipes work and some Poeple's Gas work.

Is anyone else experiencing a similar problem? We are the condo building on Gunnison and Kenneth's corner.

  • good advice from John, I'd follow it

  • Chandra Lynn Dagley Pre-Medicine Chaser From AP

Dead of winter last year, I want to say. I am on Avers. All good suggestion above me, we had someone come out with a camera, and it was a multifocal problem, because the neighbor (small bungalow) also had issues. Drain tiles were indeed a problem., and they are right about where city problem ends and ours began and some issues within the building where the landlords replaced some old pipe.

affordable snow removal service/person?

hello neighbors!
We are a new business at the corner of Avondale and Pulaski and we are looking for a more affordable option for our snow removal. We're interested in a professional service for heavier snow falls (over one inch) and/or a local person who could just (perhaps with a snowblower?) take care of our sidewalks during light snowfalls. We've gotten lucky so far this year but there is still (purportedly) a lot of winter days left!

Thanks!

Now, more than ever, we need a new high school at the Read Dunning site. Bridge, Canty, Dever and Smyser are anchoring this part of the NW Side and are a large part of Dunning making this list. Give these parents a reason to stay in Dunning, give them a new modern high school, it's long overdue. The land at Irving and Oak Park is plentiful and has been sitting idle for decades. This should be an easy decision.

I was surprised by the Wrigleyville and Andersonville median prices, they seemed low. Anyone who lives on the North Side knows those areas are more expensive. Those areas are saturated with condos. It depends on how they get their samplings for the median home prices. My experience with Redfin is that their home estimator is usually higher than Zillow or Realtor.com. Keep in mind that the median prices include homes that flippers buy which are of course lower than other sold, turn-key properties.

Who do you like/dislike in portage park? I use chicago pet clinic and ace animal hospital for back up. I do not like portage park animal hospital.

  • We have 3 dogs and a cat and they love going to the vet. Love all Drs at Forest Glen on Elston! My parents and sis also go with all their pets too. Never push for expensive treatments and always explain things and options.

  • Too long to post nuances of situation but basically it involved a peculiar chronic ear infection, a lump under his ear, and an ear polyp but blood work and X-rays showed a healthy cat. Ultimately, it was carcinoma presenting itself in an obscure way (took him to Buffalo Grove specialty clinic for ct scan, and Dr. India did not think this was a good candidate for surgery and we sadly lost our cat in Nov. 2nd). Dr. Baehr never shrugged her shoulders or gave up.

Giving credit or blame to a president for the state of the economy after one year is not right.

If Trump's administration is able to sustain key economic factors (DJIA is not one of them) than we can begin to give him credit. But, until next year's State of the Union, we will have to see. The DJIA is an economic factor mainly for the upper crust including CEO's of the companies measured via the DJIA. I understand that retirement plans are effected by the DJIA, but that, like the economy is cyclical and factored into your lifetime average including the lean years when you shift your money largely to interest bearing investments.A select few are lucky enough or knowledgeable enough to play the market perfectly. (aka insiders and CEO's)

Job creation, median income numbers, unemployment rates and interest rates are what effect the commoners like you and me not the DJIA. Giving Obama credit for that yesterday or to Trump today is a red herring.

Now I will say that, in comparing economic numbers during the Reagan years and the Obama years, the recovery was considerably more sluggish under Obama. Both men inherited a catastrophic economy. While the economy has its own engine, the president's policies can assist in the trend (up or down). The economy has and always will run in cycles.

The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) in cahoots with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has increased air traffic, noise and air pollution affecting thousands of families in the way we live, learn, play. Homes bulldozed, forests destroyed, cemeteries relocated for additional runways that affect the quality of life for thousands. Aspects to be thankful for:
- No Rats under the flight paths. Mayor Rahm allocated millions to eradicate rats in parts of Chicago. The communities under the O’Hare Flight paths are relatively rat free. Those toxic jet fuel emissions showering our neighborhoods sure do a fine job.
- CDA customer service. CDA police seriously beat a passenger aboard an aircraft for refusal to give up a paid for seat. CDA Commissioner Evans used the treatment of O’Hare community neighbors as examples on how to treat the public.
- O’Hare area Departure Tax. Of the 20 largest cities, Chicago is the only to lose population. As more people leave due to airport pollution and other quality of life issues, Mayor Rahm is instituting a Departure Tax at the airports but on U-Hauls leaving the city.
- FAA, servant of the public. US Rep Steve Lynch dubbed the FAA as the most unresponsive agency in government.
- Lower Property taxes. The Cook county assessor lowered some property assessments due to the effect of aircraft noise on home values. Mayor Rahm then proceeded to increase property taxes for all.
- The O’Hare Noise redistribution program. The CDA and puppet ONCC instituted a runway rotation plan to redistribute night flights over our communities. Now you and your children will know when to expect sleep interruption as opposed to being surprised.
- Loving the IRS. The FAA has beat out the IRS as the most despised federal agency.
-The big engine that couldn't. As O'Hare is touted as the economic engine for the Chicago area, why is it then that local taxes keep rising and services keep getting cut. In the words of many local politicos…Where’s mine.

Senior housing considered for stalled development site at Six Corners where bank was demolished

Senior housing with ground-floor retail and medical uses are being considered for the stalled development site at Six Corners. One preliminary site plan for the 2.7-acre parcel at Milwaukee and Irving shows a 10-story building, but any housing development for the site is expected to undergo several revisions. Alderman John Arena said that any proposal for the former Bank of America property is “speculative” at this time and that discussions with the developer are continuing.

A few weeks ago there was a real windy day and the street pole on the corner (@my handle name ha) fell down.

I was surprised to see it replaced with the same style green metal pole (as a mile east the lights are on aluminum poles) but I digress- I was surprised the hadn’t used this time to add the new LED light pole or same old pole but add the led light in?

I can't open my front door without one trying to run in. I know there are leash laws for dogs but what about cats. I am not the only neighbor upset by all the cats. I've tried talking to the cat lady but she does not care. Will the city come out if I call with a complaint?

Alley Cat Allies is a reputable organization that has been around for quite some time. Perhaps they are referring to the TNR cats as having a lifespan of 7 years. Surely they know that a strictly indoor pet cat receiving proper nutrition, veterinary care, etc., can and often does live almost 3 times that long. One of my cats was 19 years and 9 months old with medical issues that were well maintained over a long period of time. A friend had a kitty that was 26 years old. So, yes, cats can live very nicely well into a ripe old age!

"Perhaps they are referring to the TNR cats as having a lifespan of 7 years. "

Nope. Heres a quote from them

Of course they know. And any reputable organization wouldnt state differently.

Seeking family for nanny share in Jefferson Park starting Nov 2017

Looking for another family interested in sharing a nanny in the Jefferson Park neighborhood (near Lawrence & Milwaukee) starting in November 2017. We are expecting our first child (a girl) in August and I will be returning to work in November. This commitment would be 5 days/week, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., give or take. We are open to any hosting arrangement (your place, ours, alternating weeks/months) so long as you are close by. Hope to hear from you!

  • Hi There - we are considering nanny share and live at Lawrence and Central. I am also due in August and will be going back to work end of November. Do you have a nanny identified and know what the split cost would be?

  • Hello! I know I'm replying to this extremely late ... but we're moving very close to Lawrence/Central in February and on the off-chance that you didn't find a nanny share partner, Olivia, or have capacity in your share for another child (our son will be 20 months old in February),...

Hello! I know I'm replying to this extremely late ... but we're moving very close to Lawrence/Central in February and on the off-chance that you didn't find a nanny share partner, Olivia, or have capacity in your share for another child (our son will be 20 months old in February), I wanted to reply. We currently do a nanny share in Logan Square with our next-door neighbor and the convenience of having something so close by has been wonderful, so we're searching everywhere to find something similar. If you're still looking for child care arrangements or would like to talk about this, I'd love to hear from you. I just now signed up for Every Block, but I believe my settings will allow you to private message me. Thanks, either way, and have a happy new year!

Any recognize this cat?

There's a garfield-looking cat that has been coming by my house for about 8 years or so now (Cullom and Long area.) She likes hanging out in my yard during the day. I've always been reluctant to bring her inside because I believe she's someone's cat. (Well fed, well groomed, when it's cold or wet she doesn't show up etc.)

She stopped coming around right after the time that the trapper was catching cats so I figured her owners were keeping her indoors (good.) She's now returned, but looking a bit skinny--she was always very plump. It's odd for cats to lose weight that quickly unless there is a health problem--I tried to feed her, but she's not really interested.

I'm thinking about bringing her inside and possibly to the vet. But before I do that, I wanted to see if anyone knows if she's got an owner in the neighborhood. I tried to put a break-away collar on her that asked for her owner to call me, but she's not having any of that. I have not yet had her checked for a microchip and she is not ear-tipped.

  • Sheri is awesome. She took photos for Famous Fido of the dog I eventually ended up adopting. Then I returned to her studio for new photos a year or two later.

  • Yes, Sheri is wonderful. She helped me with a pregnant cat that showed up at my back door one day. She filled me in on what I needed to know, took the kittens pictures when they were ready to be adopted and posted them on her site. She started her...

Yes, Sheri is wonderful. She helped me with a pregnant cat that showed up at my back door one day. She filled me in on what I needed to know, took the kittens pictures when they were ready to be adopted and posted them on her site. She started her own rescue about a year or so ago.

I'll post flyers in the neighborhood (when it gets a bit warmer) and see if anyone recognizes her. I haven't seen her since my failed attempt at bringing her in but that's pretty typical during the winter.
