Violence has always been an issue in Rogers Park for as long as I can remember. It has improved in the last 10 years, but Morse Avenue needs help, it really does. It needs viable businesses that people can frequent and meanwhile not have to fear for your life. Morse Avenue needs to be revitalized in ways that parts of Andersonville and Edgewater have been in recent years. With gang bangers loitering, intimidating people, driving by, shooting each other and in this case passersby, businesses are not going to bother setting up shop on Morse Avenue. Further, people need to report crime and not just walk by the BS and say nothing. People also need to stop buying political BS from those who have allowed slumlords to rule in Rogers Park for so long. That too contributes to the issues in the community. The lack of jobs and real opportunities for youth is yet another contributor. Absent parents and poor school systems. The list goes on and on. There are many reasons for the gang violence in Rogers Park and the reasons don't include block groups trying to make their neighborhoods safe.

As mentioned at a community rally tonight (designed to bring people together), WE the people need to rise up and develop shared strategies to combat the violence and offer solutions and assistance to our youth. Standing up at a rally and blaming others is never going to solve the problem people. You are smart enough to realize that, I'm sure of it! What I witnessed tonight is sad! I hope this community learns from the mistakes of the past and it can come together to solve the gang violence and the problems it creates in Rogers Park. Community block groups have worked to clean up certain areas of this community. That's a fact! Why blame them people? I understand people are pissed about Trump and the economic and political climate, but to blame block groups is ridiculous. There has to be a better way to channel your frustration and anger. Just sayin...

Bertha, I'm a child and adolescent psychotherapist with over 30 years of experience. I have worked with gang-bangers, street kids and kids in the DCFS system.

Kids can respond very well if given the help they need. The problem is that the amount of help they need is massive and complex. Intervention is needed with the kid, individually, his parents and family, school, community, and the justice system. Many of these kids are 40 hrs a week jobs, in themselves.

You get it right that there are limits on how much we can help. Our world is a broken place. I actually even see some kids who benefit from a short time of being
locked up. For them, more of their needs are met in jail. However, it is absolutely untrue that kids don't change. They all want to grow. And you'd be surprised how many of them do!

Dear Alderman Moore,

In light of the tragic events in our neighborhood, any chance we can submit new ideas for the Participatory budget?

I for one would like to recommend the following:

Putting the full amount of the fund behind closing the "shooting window." Let's pay our officers a half hour of transition time extra, so that there is no gap in police force on our streets.

If the Dunkin Donuts is that infested with drug deals, let's rent out that space. Turn it into a police sub station. Or a community check in.

OR

Let's put the funds towards LIGHTING Glenwood. And putting up more cameras.

Just a few ideas that would mean a lot more than some piece of art on the beach.

Did anyone see anything?

Sunday morning (10/15) around 5am I thought I heard something that sounded like a car accident. Got up and looked out my windows but couldn't see anything and didn't feel like going outside at that hour. Later that morning I got a call from someone in my building who told me that my he saw my car had been hit... as had 3 other neighbors (two of them other people in my building).

The four cars were parked on Pratt facing westbound across from Newgard, around 1434 Pratt. I'm asking if maybe someone - anyone - saw anything, got a description, license plate, something? Coz, of course, there was no note...

  • It is easy to not bother to call 911 either because you think its not a big deal or you think.someone else already did but I feel its better to call then to be sorry you didn't. Be anonymous if you prefer

  • Stepping into the conversation....RP needs to start installing more surveillance cameras on the commercial strips and apartment buildings.

  • Robin, same old, same old tired useless solutions all involving tax $$$. There are many $$$$ available for job training starting with the public schools. The root of the problem, which you won't like, is to look at which demographic(s) are causing the problem and why aren't there stronger punishments.

good - we need to put more effort into prevention; in the long run, this costs so much less than punishments. A year in prison costs about the same as a year of college tuition. Which is a better investment for society?

Our hearts are heavy today as our community grieves the loss of an innocent victim to gun violence.

A woman in her early 60s was fatally shot Friday night at 6:30 p.m. as she was walking on Glenwood, just south of Morse.

According to police officials, two juveniles were on the street speaking to occupants of a vehicle stopped at the intersection of Morse and Glenwood when a second vehicle, which witnesses describe as a dark SUV, drove by. An occupant of the second vehicle fired shots at the juveniles. Tragically, one of the bullets struck the woman, who police say was an unintended victim.

After the shooting, the juveniles and both vehicles fled the scene.

The woman was taken to Presence Saint Francis Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police have asked me to withhold the identity of the victim until they are certain all members of her family have been notified.

Police officers canvassed the area searching for both the perpetrators and witnesses who might have information about the crime. Police detectives are examining video footage, which may help lead to the identification of the perpetrators and their intended targets.

In what police tell me was an unrelated shooting 30 minutes earlier, a 15-year-old boy was shot in an altercation in an alley behind in the 7400 block of Ridge Avenue. The victim is hospitalized in critical condition. Police have little information about this second crime and will be questioning the victim when he is able to talk.

If you have seen anything that might aid in the investigation of these crimes, please contact Area North Detectives at 312-744-8200.

Additional gang crime teams have been dispatched to both the Morse and Ridge and Touhy areas in the wake of these incidents.

Tonight Again I had to call in a noise complaint. An hour later after NO response and a growing party I had to call it in again. The party was broken up.
But and hour later, they were back out and partying even harder than before.
Another call. Another police visit.

This building is out of control. What can be done? Obviously they have little regard for the police, and have NO regard for their neighbors.

And contact the building owner. Let them know you are documenting and calling police and Loyola. Also, do not wait until 1 am to call police. The Chicago noise ordinance says 10 pm-8 am is quiet time. Hang in there. I have been through this.

Crime Scene Hoyne Between Birchwood and Howard

Walked home from CTA through a phalanx of CPD and the citizens who normally run the open air drug market in the parking lot behind the Public Storage at Hoyne and Howard. Heard complaints about bullet holes in cars, but no sign of EMT. Wondering if anybody in the n'hood heard anything about this. Hoping this particular enterprising gang finds a new distribution location. Nothing subtle about their presence all summer, so this event was just a matter of time. What is it about Howard and Hoyne so irresistible to the criminal element? Calls to CPD and Ward office and nothing changes.

  • @MA - graduates of Miss. Tidwinkle's Finishing School are aware that change cures all illegal activity and social and political ills. Unfortunately the Tidwinklers haven't a clue as to what that really means aside from having their servants open the windows, freshen the air and change the drapes.

"Whenever a police officer observes a member of a criminal street gang engaged in gang loitering with one or more other persons in any public place designated for the enforcement of this section under subsection (b), the police officer shall, subject to all applicable procedures promulgated by the superintendent of police: (i) inform all such persons that they are engaged in gang loitering within an area in which loitering by groups containing criminal street gang members is prohibited; (ii) order all such persons to disperse and remove themselves from within sight and hearing of the place at which the order was issued; and (iii) inform those persons that they will be subject to arrest if they fail to obey the order promptly or engage in further gang loitering within sight or hearing of the place at which the order was issued during the next eight hours."

A little complicated and forces a time element to be considered.

This year you will be asked to vote on two separate ballot questions. First, you will be asked to vote on the percentage of the ward infrastructure ballot that you believe should be devoted exclusively to street and alley resurfacing and sidewalk repairs.

Second you will be asked to vote on how the remainder of the ward’s infrastructure ballot should be allocated. You will be given four votes to choose among seven project proposals that were developed, researched and proposed by your neighbors, not politicians and bureaucrats. And it will be you and your neighbors, not City Hall, who decide which projects will move forward.

Information on the project proposals, as well as the blocks proposed for street and alley resurfacing and new sidewalks, will be on display throughout the day at the Chicago Math and Science Academy.

You can vote electronically or on a paper ballot.

Artist Davis McCarty’s proposal for a Rogers Park “entry point” artistic sculpture received strong support from community residents who attended a recent meeting I hosted on the proposal.

Make sure CDOT does whatever it's going to do at the Devon-Sheridan triangle before putting this in.

Bodyworker and Shoe repair

Anybody know an awesome bodyworker/Licensed Massage Therapist with at least 7 years exp and multi dimensional? I've been searching and I do know about place by jarvis square... Anybody else who will WOW factor me? Namaste!

  • smartypants Be Nice

BAD experience with the place on Damen just north of Lawrence. He resoled my husband's shoes and in less than a month there was a large hole in one shoe. When I took them back in, with my receipt, I was shocked that the man wouldn't stand by his work. He refused to resolve that shoe for less than another full fee.

For bodywork, keep it in the neighborhood!

    Try Karen at http://www.rogersparkmassage.com/ .

She is great. If you want to get to meet her first, she usually does chair massage at the Common Cup on Thursdays form 4-6.

    I highly recommend her.

What day is Trick - or - Treat for 60626?

Hi there! I am an Ohio transplant and I would love to participate in trick - or - treat. I live in the Jarvis Square area. What day is trick - or -treat?

  • In Chicago, it is always *on* Halloween and kids usually start going around after school lets out (on weekdays) and will go until dark or so.

  • Helen NoH North of Howard for 55 + years

If by participate, you mean you want to hand out goodies, be aware that kids probably won't be coming to your door if you live in an apartment building. I suggest checking with your neighbors before stocking up on candy to see what usually happens in the Jarvis Square area.

  • JMG

Hot spots on Halloween are usually areas with concentrations of sfhs. Look for blocks with lots of decorations on porches for trick or treating.
