Monarch Butterflies need "Common Milkweed"

For anyone interested in helping restore Monarchs by planting milkweed; not all milkweed offers full life-cycle Monarch support (not all gardeners/naturalists know the distinction). All types of milkweed will attract pollinators/butterflies.
But only Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) supports the full Monarch lifecycle; as the necessary food source for caterpillars of the Monarch butterfly that feast on its leaves.

Never saw the visitor to our garden, but we found its caterpillars! (pic)

  • Nessuno Government Blank Check.

I hate to jinx this but, I'm still not seeing "any" aphids on my plants! Last year I was infested. So far I only saw a single, lonely milkweed beetle and that's been gone for awhile.

  • Nessuno, milkweed beetles (red beetles with black spots) kill milkweed plants. The adult beetles lay eggs in the soil at the plant base and the larva eat the milkweed roots. The darned beetle larva killed a few of our plants this year. Going to save some seeds this fall to plant in pots to harbor "free range" Monarch caterpillars inside (then put inside a net habitat for their butterfly stage). No beetles and great views.

Street repavement question

Anyone know what the deal is with 4800 and 4900 block of Warwick street repavement? They had signs up for no parking the 5th-11th. They broke up the street. When I returned home from a trip yesterday, the 13th, I was expecting a new paved street, however it was just how I left it. The signs are the old signs as well, so wondering why it stopped and when it will be finished.

  • You know how the city works. Look how long it took them to finish Cicero. Hopefully it will be done soon.

  • Agnes Groeper Major of Major

We have suffered the repaving problem for years to get the 2400 and 2700 blocks of N Mango repaved. Would you believe they did 2500 and 2600 which were cement and skipped 2400 and 2700, Whoever repaved Schubert from Central to Austin should be sued, It was a bad job to start with and is already cracking up, We need more housewives in City government to clean up the mess Any volunteers?

  • Nessuno Government Blank Check.

Oriole between Belmont and Forest Preserve Dr. is plain concrete and has lasted for years! Of course, they don't wanna build them all that way. There would be no busy work for the over paid city employees.

Motorcycle Running Wild?

Early this Sunday morning from around 3 - 4 am, I heard a motorcycle or motorcycles racing around the streets somewhere around Monitor, Menard and Cullom (4200 N, 5700 W). While I could not see what was making the noise, I could hear it.

Did anyone else in the area notice this too?

Not sure what to do since I could not call the police and give them specifics.

Thanks.

Our family loves living in Portage Park. And it's still a relatively safe community compared to much of Chicago.

To help keep it that way, I would encourage all of us to consider:

    1. Calling the police for obvious activities they should address (e.g. people doing drugs in their cars, sitting on residential areas in cars playing loud music at night)

    2. When you see graffiti on your block (e.g. even on back of street signs) call or use an online form to get it cleaned up.

    3. When you have an ongoing issue where calling 911 might not be appropriate (e.g. the bad folks are not around long enough for the police to deal with them or fireworks going off two weeks before or after July 4th) call the District 16 Caps office (312) 742-4521 and ask them how to handle these concerning, yet not alarming matters.

I've done all three of the above, more time than I would like. However, it does seem to work.

    Thanks.

Recycling

To the person in the condo who loaded up our two recycling cans with their junk (A lot of which was not recyclable): We took all that stuff and placed in our garbage bins that were picked up by the city today.

It was strangely statisfying. Also, we know who you are.

Does anyone know the general feelings from the community regarding the senior housing project? Were there more neighbors for or against this idea?

"Wait until people realize that the Sears building was full of lead based paint and asbestos when it was built. There's probably going to be a second, bigger hole in Six Corners soon."

Ooh, good call. This should be interesting.

  • There are great breakfast places in the area! We love Nick's Hi Ho which is a little south of Six Corners. Burgundy is great too on Irving. Also, don't forget Fannie's - she is great because the food changes often. We ate at Fischmans and the food was fantastic - try the avocado bomb and the PBJ with bacon!

Pfleger gives no quarter to those who deny his parishioners' peaceful demand for attention to this most important issue.

Chicago Police Dept. Chief Eddie Johnson is the hero of the day - He parted the Red Sea of "red tape" of politics & legal BS by asserting his higher jurisdiction over defending "the People" in the march to protect them against harm & to insure the People's message is heard and all are safe. While the State Police may have the duty to protect the highway - he had a higher sworn duty to protect the People themselves.

In the end not one person was arrested. In the end not one person acted in a non-peaceful way. This was all accomplished without a single permit application or issuance.

Videos from WGN-TV, which covered the event, show fist-bumps & hugs abounded between the marchers & Chicago police rank & file members who stood alongside to protect citizens in their right to be civil disobediants...

At least for TODAY, the Chicago Police Department and the People of Chicago were finally on the same side against the war-mongers who try to divide them!

THIS IS NOT THE 1968 DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION - HALLELUJAH!

Mayor Rahm Emanuel was very "late to the party". His previous comments showed his opposition to this march. Does this show his lack of backbone or political worries as his underlings take the lead on the inevitable?

Illinois state politicians in Springfield (democrats and republicans) continue to be “officially” silent before and in the wake of this peaceful protest march.

Next up... Who’s gonna vote for whom?

  • Father Greg God knows what you did...

Yes Craig, it was "one sided" (only the Northbound lanes) -Wink!

  • OParker Native Chicagoan

political hoi polli . getting close to election..schools are getting attention, PD is getting officers and suddenly Rahm believes people have a right to protest. As I recall Rahm was the one to push rulings to prevent people from marching and protest downtown because it was some type of health/safety issue. He needs to be removed..time is up ...before we end up with another 20 year Daley that totally sells us out and then jumps ship.

FOUND: male dog (possible jack russell terrier) near Menard and Roscoe

FOUND: I found this little guy around 10:30am today (7/5/18) running along Menard near Roscoe. He was scared at first, but finally allowed me to pet him. No tags, so I took him to the vet to check for a microchip -- no chip :( He is very sweet, is house-trained, and loves belly rubs. He will be staying with me until I can find the owner.

  • Kudos for being such a caring person. I hope you find his owner. Just be careful who you give him to. There are people who will claim to be an owner who do not have an animal's best interest at heart. Having a full description makes it easy to do. He is a cutie.

Streets and Sanitation

I was wondering if anyone knows of how dispose of an old love seat with Streets and Sanitation in the 60630 district? Thanks!

  • Lisa New Portage Park Neighbor

Thank you everyone for your advise :) I had called 311 and they gave me the number to my alderman's office for a pick up request but no one answered. I did read that a call is preferred but you may leave items out by your garbage on pick up day and they will dispose of it. My love seat was picked up today by Streets and Sanitation :) I appreciate their services!

  • I had some really old, half-dead bushes in front of my house cut down and the debris was left on the parkway. I went to the alderman's office (Ald. Villagas) to ask if the city would pick it up, as hauling it out to the alley would have been a monumental task for me. I received a call from the ward superintendent shortly thereafter, and a week later the debris was picked up. I thought I should post something positive for a change!

Hi Everyone - I know that this has been posted/attempted in the past few years but I'd like to take a shot at starting some sort of running club at Portage Park. I see lots of runners out there by themselves - why not start a club and make some friends in the process?

I'm envisioning something that welcomes and accommodates runners of all fitness levels. I don't want to set a course and make everyone stick to a certain pace. That can be intimadating for slower runners and infuriating for faster runners. Since most people tend to run laps around the perimeter of Portage Park (1 lap of the outer perimeter = 1 mile), I'd like to do something where we all meet up beforehand, determine how long we'd like to go for, and then run as many laps as we can during that time and just fall in with groups of runners who are going at a similar pace. Perhaps we can even find a nearby place where we can have a post-run beer.

Is anyone interested? If so, I'll get this going.

Local internet providers?

AT&T has raised my rates for the last time. I cut cable due to annual rate increases that went above my budget, but, the internet is a different beast...wife needs it for work. If my research is correct, it's only AT&T (stand alone internet) or XFinity (bundled only) for our area. RCN is not available (where are they available?). Where are the choices? Borderline monopoly? At about a 20% increase year-over-year, this is simply unsustainable. I guess I can cut one meal a day and shower and flush less, but, would rather not. Are there other internet options for PP area or is it just these two? Thnx.

  • PortageRules Love Portage Park!

Being priced out of something is hardly a generational issue. However, running a tight and responsible budget may lean toward as something more of my own X'er generation.

  • Ha! Yes, Mr. Maucy, I know what a hard wired phone is. In fact, I used to have a lineman's headset, tracer, and the punchdown tool to put phone lines into a punchdown block. That doesn't mean that "today" we don't need other things to keep up with technology. If you are older, maybe you don't need internet. However, the vast majority of the world needs even basic internet just to live a normal life. It may be a sad state of affairs, but it is what it is :)

  • Treehouse, Harmony House, Canines and Felines, Red Door, PAWS. Typically requires a wait and an intake donation. Then there is Anti-Cruelty and Chicago Animal Care and Control. What happens to the cat next at AC depends whether stray/found or owner surrender. CACC will accept on the spot but cat may end up dead. Best to read about current policies on their websites then call to confirm up to date.

Obama-Land Fiasco Worsens - Chicago Taxpayers Now Face $224 Million Bill
Authored by Mark Glennon via Wirepoints.com, The taxpayer bill for the Obama Center to be built on Chicago's Southside now appears to be $224 million, not $172 million as initially reported, and it's certainly not privately funded as initially promised.
https://www.zerohedge.com

  • Nessuno Government Blank Check.

    Here's the latest:
Illinois’ state budget might not be the only source of taxpayer money for the center. Chicago residents may face a property tax add-on, as the General Assembly amended the state’s Museum Act in 2016 to permit such a tax to help finance the center. Alterations to the Museum Act also allowed lawmakers to grant the parkland transfer to the Obama Foundation. That transfer is the subject of a federal lawsuit filed by the nonprofit Protect Our Parks.

So, after months of having my two “No Soliciting” ignored and illegal handymen flyers taped to my garage I’ve decided to get some satisfaction.

Soon after getting there he started texting & calling me for me to come out. After about 20 minuets he drove away. I then texted him and told him why I just wasted 30 mins of his time.
