Venting

Speaking of parking issues in Rogers Park... an old gentleman across the street on North Shore has a designated handicap spot. When he returns from wherever, he parks in his spot. Then, as soon as an adjacent spot opens up he removes his placard from the window and moves his car there, taking up an extra space.

I fume every time I see this. What’s his deal? Does he just like an unobstructed view of the street? And, (yes, I know you can’t always tell), he doesn’t seem to have a disability.

It just apppears selfish and un-neighborly.

  • Phill I don’t know why you’re are assuming I was responding to you, especially when I directed my post to Patrick Quinn.. unless you’re two people in one I never said it was ok for people to get spots for “service people”. That’s just plain ignorant on that persons part and I again would take it up with someone to investigate it.. otherwise that completely sucks. Maybe my message fell below your message but my comment had nothing to do with your comment. I’m not a bad personality like that

What's going on at Devon Market?

Devon Market has been closed for two days and there's a sign on the inner door that says "License suspended. Chicago Department of Public Health".

The outer doors say "Closed for repairs.".

Can anyone find the violations? I've looked and I'm coming up empty.

  • See health code violations, they had a fail which is now a pass. Lots of rodent droppings found.

Alderman Moore supports new Loyola athletic facility at Loyola & Winthrop.

To the surprise of absolutely no none, Alderman Loyola has given the university exactly what they want. The Loyola-ization of East Rogers Park continues unabated and all but unrestricted. Dear Neighbor, I invite you to attend a community meeting to review Loyola University's proposal to build a three-story athletic practice facility on the university's campus at the southwest corner of Loyola and Winthrop Avenues. The gateway was a rough timeline. Took years to complete. As was many of the developments on Howard. I have many photos of gateway under construction and the Howard theatre.

  • Alderman Moore,
Thank you for letting us know about the development on Howard and Bosworth, very close to me. I was sad to see the beautiful street art that the former building had go, but the building was definitely in a horrid state of disrepair. I hope rent prices are in tune with the neighborhood and that it will encourage a little commercial development. We have some great small businesses, but too many empty store fronts.

Property taxes = corruption

Confirmed, mine trippled since 95.
Unsustainable.

  • Phill "Obama wants to know everything"

Chicago is structured like that, Democratic politicians love heavy taxation for home owners (The socialist concept has always been to tax the successful) then use that money to support people that always vote for the Democratic party. If they need more money, then they take it from drivers when they go to work, using money making machines like speed cameras.

That won’t make a difference Rob, because as soon as Trump & North Korea nuke the world no one will get sunlight... but we’ll have stlll have the practice facility:)

  • This monstrous athletic practice tower will destroy the historical character of the traditional neighborhood, will attract and kill migrating birds with its lights, will cause flooding and prevent rainfall from recharging the natural aquifer, will add to noise pollution and must be forced to sign a community agreement to hire only local union employees and promise a low carbon footprint and prove that it will support the local small business climate.

Thanks!

lost keys

1500 block of Estes, lost a set of keys to a Subaru

  • jos home owner since the '70s

Out with sno blower this AM, helping neighbors clean up walks and street. Lost a set of keys to our Subaru s.t. between 10-1 in the middle of the 1500 block on Estes, N side of St. If found, please let me know.
    Thanks,
    JD

  • I'm sorry that happened to you! I feel your frustration. Same thing happened to my husband's a few years back. Helping out across the street. He, like you I'm sure, needed the keys or no work.
So he recruited a bunch of friends, pizza for all and a bonus for the keys finder, and bought a metal detector.
Took about 15 minutes. Somehow they wound up hanging on a low tree branch!
I hope yours pop up as well. Good luck!

  • I don't know if it was on this site or on Next Door but I recall someone in the last few days saying they found Subaru keys. Good luck.

The City of Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation already has activated some of its snow plow fleet so they are in position when snow starts to fall. Additional resources will be deployed as needed throughout the storm.

Please note that plows clear the arterial streets continuously during any winter storm. Only after the snowfall stops do they move onto the side streets.

As we are expecting constant snowfall throughout tonight and tomorrow, the side streets will experience considerable snow accumulation for most of Friday. Do not expect to see any snow plows on the side streets until after the snow ceases to fall and the arterial streets are clear.

I would like to thank everyone who dutifully has cleared their sidewalk this winter. It is the responsibility of every resident or business/property owner to ensure that the sidewalk adjacent to their property is clear of snow. Please report unshoveled sidewalks to my office at ward49@cityofchicago.org or 773-338-5796.

Happy to see an Alderman not only doing their job but taking a proactive approach towards keeping the residents up to date during this snowstorm. Someone should tell that to the 50th ward. Seems they took a snow day and could care less that most of the residents of her ward cant even move their cars. The snow has been stopped for hours now and as of 5:30pm no one has come by to plow our street, which is highly travelled. I wish I could say this was a one time thing, but this was also the case Tuesday after snow fell Monday. Many of the streets running north to south between Kedsie and California bordered by Devon and Peterson were not plowed for the whole day. Seems today is no different. Makes me wonder why I'm paying 29 separate taxes to live in this city. Nonetheless, bravo to the Alderman of the 49th district, at least you showed up to work today.

So I’m in that group of 20 something’s where half the people I know are getting married and the other half are still at home with parents pursuing career. Last year two close friends got married, to different people, not each other. Both events were out of state and I’m part of the group that is saving money at home with mom and dad. Being that my financial situation is strained I couldn’t attend either event. This May another friend is getting married out of state. I’m planning on doing my absolute best to make it. One of the recently married friends will be attending the same event. Here is the predicament: what is the appropriate very belated wedding gift? Also, I know it would be poor taste to give the belated gift while attending the upcoming wedding. Would it be best to send something before or after the event in May? Needless to say I’m on a budget, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • Send it before so you dont have any uneasiness by seeing them ..and i would first look at the registry and if things are on there that you can't afford send them a $50 gift card..and if you buy the gift card at a store where they are registered you wont have to pay the 5.00 charge for purchasing it. Good luck girl..and honestly ..any gift is a good gift..👰🤵

If you're going to get them a belated gift anyway, there's no point in strategizing when to send it and waiting until May could have the potential of signaling to your recently married friends that you're only sending them a gift at or after the May wedding because you're feeling guilty, awkward or something else rather than a gift in celebration and congratulations.

As for a suggestion now that you sound like you're a few months after-the-fact, send them a nicer picture frame for their wedding pictures that they should be getting back around this time. Home Goods, Nordstroms, Marshalls and a number of other places have lovely "wedding-y" frames at a good price. If they're really your friends, they'll appreciate the thought and a nice card and note over the perceived price tag.

    Best of luck.

Affordable ride-share service comes to Rogers Park!

Dear all, wanted to make you aware that Via (a very affordable ride-share service) has added Rogers Park to its service area as of today! You just need to download the app, and then your first four rides to/from RP (their service area goes all the way downtown to the south loop) are only $3.95 each, and you can get $10 ride credit to try it out by using someone's referral code (if you need one, mine is Stephanie4K3). I'd love to see Via be successful in RP to expand our transportation options--hope you will try it out!

(To be clear, I don't work for Via--I just like to have a safe and affordable way to get home).

  • I came home from Roosevelt/State totally alone in a perfectly clean luxury sedan last night for $3.95, but I think the sale only lasts through the week, so I would suggest you try it!

  • D M

Via offers private rides as well, at extremely reasonable prices. I was able to get home from work the other night for less than half of Lyft's surge pricing.

Joe Moore, Alderman of Chicago's 49th Ward ad...

Follow Me on Friday to the West Ridge portion of the 49th Ward and welcome a new addition to our ward’s restaurant scene–El Garcia at 7517 N. Western (just south of Howard). Join me at El Garcia this Friday, February 2nd, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., for some complementary flautitas and quesadillas. Wash them down with a free margarita, beer, wine or soft drink. El Garia’s is owned by the same family behind Lincoln Square’s popular Garcia’s Restaurant, which has been operating for nearly 30 years. Oscar Garcia and his brother, Lenny, who are the sons of the original Garcia’s owner, are managing this location for the family. The Mexican eatery is located at the spot of the former Swiss Pasteries Bakery. The Garcia family purchased the property a few years ago with an eye toward opening a second restaurant. After extensive interior renovations that transformed the bakery into a sit-down restaurant, the family opened El Garcia last spring. El Garcia receives excellent reviews on Yelp–an average of 4.5 stars–with people raving about the spicy red salsa that arrives at the table with warm crispy tortilla chips. I can personally testify to the excellent guacamole made with cilantro and sweet onions. And I highly recommend the chorizo burrito suizo, served on a colorful pottery plate. This is one Follow Me on Friday event you won’t want to miss! Follow Me on Friday is one of my efforts to encourage my constituents to sample some of the 49th Ward’s finest restaurants, pubs, businesses and festivals. About once or twice a month on my Facebook page, I post the name and location of a local restaurant, pub, business or festival where I’ll be hanging out after work on Friday. The establishment offers specials for all my Facebook followers and their friends. • Sorry live but I often have eaten in the places you mentioned which are good, THEN ate at Bayless' new place.
    He's off the charts fantastic.
I never knew chicken could taste like the chicken he made.
    Incredible.

Payless deserves a lotta cf credit for ginning up interest in regional Mexican fine dining.
I've been to his smaller place think it's called Xoco or something like that... deliciousness.

this seems like a program we should support... should be part of the regular public school curriculum given the drownings we have had in recent years... this might be a good start to that end.

The 49th Ward Democratic Party Board of Directors last night finalized our list of endorsed candidates for the March 2018 Primary Election.

The Board voted last night to endorse Pat Quinn for Illinois Attorney General, Maria Pappas for Cook County Treasurer, Frederick "Fritz" Kaegi for County Assessor, and Martin Durkan for a six-year term as a Water Reclamation District Commissioner.

Each of these candidates received a majority of the votes at last Saturday's 49th Democratic Party endorsement session in which the members of the party voted on whom to support, but failed to receive a two-thirds membership vote necessary to earn them an automatic endorsement.

Under our rules, contests where no candidates receive a two-thirds vote are referred to the party's Board of Directors for further deliberation.

Quinn, Pappas, Kaegi and Durkan join an all-star slate of progressive Democrats led by our endorsed candidate for Governor, Daniel Biss.

Oscars Weekend at New 400 Theater

Tony Fox, the owner of the New 400, posted the following message on Facebook:

Anyone interested in The Academy Awards nominated films? This weekend at the 400 we are showing : The Shape of Water, Ladybird, The Post, and we are bringing back Three Billboards, and we have recently opened Maze Runner. It has been very dead at the theater the last couple months we really need the community’s support.

If you haven't been to the New 400, this is the weekend to try it out! You can support a local business while enjoying an Oscar-nominated movie and munching on some of the best popcorn in Chicago.

Let's support our local businesses.
