The 49th Ward Spring Clean-Up is just around the corner!

Though the recent cold and rain makes it hard to believe, spring truly is just around the corner. Winter is finally relinquishing its icy grip and it’s time to clean up the old leaves and debris that have accumulated over the last five months.

Join me for the 28th annual 49th Ward SPRING CLEAN-UP!

This year’s clean-up takes place on Saturday, May 5th. We’ll meet at 9:00 a.m. for coffee and rolls at my 49th Ward Service Office, 7356 N. Greenview (at Jarvis), and then fan out across the neighborhood, picking up trash, cutting down weeds and planting flowers. If you have an area you want to work, that’s great! Otherwise, we’ll assign you to an area that needs attention.

We’ll return to my office at 12:00 noon for a fabulous “Taste of the 49th Ward” with food donated from a vast array of 49th Ward restaurants, guaranteed to satisfy every culinary taste.

In an effort to make the event as sustainable as possible, this year’s Taste of the 49th Ward buffet will go zero-waste. We will provide reusable silverware and water bottle refill stations to reduce single-use items. Compost will be provided by Urban Canopy’s Compost Club, the same organization that my office uses to compost food scraps in our kitchen, and everything else will be completely recyclable.

We ask that you register in advance so we can plan for enough food and equipment for the day. To register and/or suggest a location that needs cleaning, visit:

The assessed value of your property is one of the factors that determine the amount of property taxes you pay. This assessed value is determined by the Cook County Assessor.

The Assessor’s office this week mailed notices of the assessments to every property owner in Rogers Park. If you believe your property assessment is improper, you have a right to appeal that assessment.

At the workshop, you will learn how the assessment process works, how to file an appeal with the County Assessor’s office and how an appeal is granted. Staff from the Assessor’s office will be available to answer questions and help complete appeal forms.

Pedestrian hit & run

My son was hit by a light silver Honda sedan when crossing the alley on Ardmore and Glenwood. The vehicle left the scene without even checking to see how bad the injuries were.

If you witnessed the accident, please contact me.

Thank you.

  • So sorry to hear this. I suggest that you post the message to Edgewater, since it wasn’t technically in Rogers Park.

  • I am glad to hear your son is alright.

While not disclosing Spruce’s name, the unsealed warrant contained other clues to his identity: both his current apartment number at the Ashland address as well as his previous address in the 1900 block of West Fargo Avenue. Public records listed both addresses for him.

The timeworn apartment building in Chicago's Rogers Park neighborhood hardly looks like the corporate headquarters of one of the world's largest shipping companies. But for a few recent months, that's essentially what it became - at least as far as the U.S. Postal Service was concerned.

UPS, USPS and OOPS

The building at 6750 N. Ashland Avenue where Dushaun Henderson Spruce lives photographed Tuesday April 17, 2018.

    UPS, USPS and OOPS
Every year, millions of Americans troop to the post office for the mundane task of diverting their mail to a new address. But the mundane turned extraordinary in the case of Dushaun Spruce. Last October, Spruce allegedly filed a request to shift mail from 55 Glenlake Parkway NE in Atlanta to Spruce's one-bedroom apartment in Rogers Park.

Has anyone else been followed recently?

I was followed home by a group of 3 people yesterday evening, and just wanted to see if it had happened to anyone else recently.I went slowly and even made a couple stops along the way and each time they were hanging back waiting for me. I've lived here for several years and have never had something like this happen before. It happened on Sheridan around 5:45. I can provide more details if necessary.

  • Someone should check out the group that hangs out on Lunt between Clark and Ashland

  • steven beckerman Lifelong resident of the Rogers Park neighborhood.

I've had friends in Lincoln Square, and Lakeview, both single women, report similar situations recently, In one case she asked him loudly why he was following her, and he began a verbally abusive barrage, but by that time it had gained the attention of passersby, and neighbors.

Feds: False Change Of Address Moved UPS Headquarters To Rogers Park Apartment

Apartment 2 at 6750 N. Ashland Av. became the address for UPS corporate headquarters in October, after the man who lives inside filled out a change of address form at a post office, according to a federal affidavit. UPS corporate mail then was redirected and delivered to the apartment.

CHICAGO (CBS) - UPS headquarters might be in Atlanta, but for almost three months, hundreds if not thousands of pieces of its corporate mail were delivered to a small unassuming garden apartment in the Rogers Park neighborhood in Chicago. Do you want to feel good again about democracy and voting?

Each year, I receive over $1 million from the City's "Aldermanic Menu" Program to spend at my discretion on infrastructure improvements in the ward. Rather than me deciding how to spend the money, I turn the decision-making power over to the residents of my ward through a process known as “participatory budgeting.”

Community volunteers come up with proposed project ideas and the entire ward votes on the proposals they would most like to see implemented. I agree to abide by the results of the vote.

The process for determining how to spend next year’s budget begins NOW. Over the next two weeks, I will host six “Neighborhood Assemblies” (five in English and one in Spanish) throughout the 49th Ward where people learn about Participatory Budgeting and begin to brainstorm ideas on projects they would like to see in the ward.

The first assembly takes place TONIGHT (Monday, April 23rd), 7:00 p.m., at Sullivan High School, 6631 N. Bosworth (between North Shore and Albion). Come early before the meeting at 6:30 p.m. and join us for free pizza, courtesy of J.B. Alberto's.

Car parts

Can anyone explain why my Honda dealer would charge 1934.04 to replace a steering gearbox in a 2007 Honda CR-V. According to my NAPA catalogue the exact part costs 150.00.
Of course I’m not getting it done there.
Any recommendations for a good mechanic would be appreciated.
Thanks

Nine years ago, I implemented a “participatory budgeting” process in which the residents of my ward decide directly through popular vote how those tax dollars are spent.

Since then, scores of cities across the nation have emulated our process and just recently Participatory Budgeting became the subject of a PBS documentary.

The process for determining how to spend next year’s budget begins NOW. Over the next two weeks, I will host six “Neighborhood Assemblies” (five in English and one in Spanish) throughout the 49th Ward.

The first assembly takes place Monday, April 23rd, 7:00 p.m. (complimentary pizza served at 6:30 p.m.) at Sullivan High School, 6631 N. Bosworth (enter through the door in the middle of the block). If you can’t make this assembly, there are five more to choose from.

For more information, including a list of all the Participatory Budgeting Neighborhood Assemblies, visit:

The Friends of Rogers Park Library celebrated National Library Week with giving away money! These funds will help purchase additional items, not in the city’s budget for our library. At our meeting on April 14, 2018, the last day of National Library Week, we approved sending a $1000 check to the Chicago Public Library Foundation. They will purchase many more books through their power of mass purchasing. They will buy additional children’s books just in time for the Summer Reading Program for our library. We will spend another $1500 to get live music performances, decorations, and materials also for this year’s Summer Learning Program from our account. We are able to raise these funds through our book sales and from a few generous donors. We thank all who buy books at our sales, we thank all our donors and we thank all the volunteers who help with the book sale. They help make the Rogers Park Library one of the busiest branch libraries with the many people coming to use our neighborhood learning resource.

Our next book sale is scheduled for Saturday, April 28, 2018, from 10 AM to 4 PM. Please come to our Spring Fling Book Sale, and buy an armload of books. Your purchases help us to help our library. We also need volunteers to help set up the sale on April 27 and help run and clean up after the sale on April 28. Sign up to volunteer at the Reference Desk. Just fill out a form, and give it to the reference librarian. If you can’t make it to the April 28th Book Sale, you can still donate to the Friends of the Rogers Park Library to help us strengthen our neighborhood learning center.

The Rogers Park Library is currently running out of storage space for new book donations. However, after the April 28 Book Sale, we will accept gently used books. If you are donating books, please do not put them in the Book Return, where they will be mixed with returning library books. It takes more time to sort through the returning and donated books. After April 28, gently used books can be dropped off at the Circulation Desk. Some of them may be immediately put into the library's collection. Also, check with our neighboring branch libraries like Edgewater and Bezazian who have Library Friends groups and are members of our Chicago Coalition of Library Friends. They have upcoming book sales. Thanks.
