Bird mess from feeders

I have a neighbor who has hung not 1 but 2 bird feeders approx 1 foot from my property line. The mess in my yard and patio is not just bad but seriously bad (and unhealthy). I really don't care if they want to feed the birds but I asked them to move them more into their yard to prevent the mess in my yard...I told them that I am tired cleaning the mess in my yard and this mess is not only unhealthy but it has been attracting the rats and now pigeons (and they laughed at me).
Is there any sort of code that determines how close a neighbor can put anything near my property line?

new carpet recommendation

Hi, we are looking for recommendations for a company to get carpet quotes from. We will also need a new subfloor. I'm fine buying carpet separately or a company that will do everything from subfloor to carpet (including carpet sale). The room is about 350 square ft. and we will carpet stairs also.

Concrete Stair Repair Recommendations?

The concrete stairs in front of my bungalow that lead to the front door started to crumble towards the sides on a few of the steps and i am hoping to have them repaired before the winter hits and hopefully in such a way that shoveling and salting them doesn't make them crumble again.

Does anyone have any recommendations for anyone that could help fix our stairs?

I decided to rent them with my husband, because we bought an old house, which required a great renovation, among other things, stairs. Sincerely? I was totally shocked when I saw the results of their work. I thought that the pictures on their website with the effect of "before and after" refurbishment were some lie, but really everything looked just like on the website. I regret that I did not take a picture of the stairs before they were renovated. I could share with you the effects of the Concrete Power company.
What's more, all employees of this company are so well trained. You can immediately see that they know what they are doing. Concrete Power really has to put in years of practice in training these people.
We wanted to go with my husband such a staircase, similar to one of the pictures in their gallery - the ones next to it. It was enough that we showed them a photo and they already knew what to do.
I think that the price is really good and affordable in relation to the services offered by Concrete Power. They use only the best materials to repair the stairs.
These stairs will be indestructible for years! Good job, Concrete P!

  • Also looking for this service. It's time for the brickwork and stairs. Thanks for all the recommendations. I've read eventually bungalows will need

At Gift, a 'Hamlet' with all kinds of ambition
At one point in Monty Cole's uber-contemporary "Hamlet" - at the Gift Theatre in Jefferson Park - the title character turns his back on the audience, picks up a can of red spray paint and goes to work like a graffiti artist: "Your silence will not protect you." Fascinating.

Daniel Kyri turns in a triumphant performance in the Gift's Hamlet
Make the ghost real. Make Hamlet a genius and a killer at the same time. Make Ophelia's insanity inevitable. Make Polonius wise. Or is the ghost an illusion through and through? Is Hamlet a privileged monster, a whiny misogynistic fencing enthusiast and creep who commits foul murder with impunity, writes blatantly offensive letters, and enjoys a good four-hour pacing session by himself around the halls at Elsinore?

Affordable housing in the Far Northwest Side: A tale of two projects
The economic bustle in and around O'Hare International Airport yields a strong job market for working-class Chicagoans, a market that's only going to get stronger when O'Hare's long-awaited expansion starts. Plenty of mass transit, including the Blue Line and an array of CTA bus routes, connects Far Northwest Side neighborhoods with the rest of the city.

I have asked him to move it back but that was on deaf ears.
Is there a building code that specifies how far a canopy or awning can extend out from the side of the house? This awning is considered encroachment if it extends to my property line, correct?

  • paul in jefferson jefferson park resident

Call building department and ask about set backs for awnings and find out code first.

  • If he built it without a permit that is all you need to challenge it. Also any new structure needs to be 3 feet from the property line if they are made with wood or any other flammable materials. If he replaced an existing awning it may be grandfathered in. My guess is any awning that existed before probably wasn’t done without a permit anyway.

Building Codes

I have a neighbor who built and installed an awning constructed out of wood and plexiglass over his side door leading into the basement. It extends out all the way to my fence line and my entrance doors into my residence are adjacent. Needless to say I catch all the water and snow at my doors now. There has to be a code regulating how far an awning can extend out on the side of house...along with what materials are considered safe. Am I wrong?

  • Let the neighbor know that the rain and snow falls on your side - and ask him to add a rain gutter to the awning...... that may take care of the problem - -

If the snow falls on your side - that could cause a serious accident - talk it out with your neighbor....maybe you two can come to an agreement...good luck

Basement renovation question

Hi all. Starting to explore the potential to add living space to the basement. It is plumbed (awkwardly) for a powder room, and most of the space has a kiss over 7' in height from concrete to joist. I would like to do the work on the up and up, but installation of a sub-floor (even something ultra-thin) would encroach on that 7' clearance. My question to you all is: Has anyone attempted to get a variance on the ceiling...

My question to you all is: Has anyone attempted to get a variance on the ceiling height for a basement renovation project? Were you successful? Why or why not?
Demoing out the old slab (though thin), digging down and re-pouring is not really an option. Neither is lifting the house. Just not the budget for it. Yes, floor drains would have to be re-located, moisture infiltration prevented, insulation, electrical, . . . but all of that talk is moot unless there is precedent for a variance. If I can't get an answer here, I'll turn to an architect, but thought I'd see what the neighbors say first.

anyone?

  • The above code section regarding 7'-0" ceiling height, may only apply to existing legal units and useful for duplexing purposes, but may not apply to converting an existing space into a new stand alone legal dwelling unit.

  • new dwelling will require 7' 6", if you want a bathroom down there

10-story building planned for Six Corners

10-story building with senior housing and commercial space is planned for Six Corners. Six Corners Master Plan calls for four or five-story development on the site. Alderman Arena will host meeting on the proposal at 6:30 pm Thursday, June 21, at the Filament Theater, 4041 N Milwaukee. The complex would include 265 units, with a mix of independent living, assisted living and memory care options.

CubsHawksBears-Yeah apologize and get your facts straight before you make a statement. BTW-I always believed that local, state and federal politicians are the first ones to break the rules and laws they uphold. They never seem to follow and abide by most/any of them. That is part of the benefit of being in that position. Case closed!

  • I re-read the message to which I took exception and NOW understand it was directed at Arena and not at those who keep us safe...MY BAD!!!

I apologize for not reading a newspaper circulated to about 2% of people in the greater Chicagoland area.

I feel equally bad that I didn't pile on Arena.

Arena in a different language is defined as self-important douche!!!

Mister Rodger's

I after submitting a post as I have been criticized by a member for not having value since I l don't comment often. in my defense, I try to only comment when I have something of substance to offer. So to gain creditability with my critics, I am offering this post.
Having watched the documentary on Mister Rodgers tonight, I was really inspired in his impact on our kids. Anyone raising kids in the 70's, exposed their kids to him. What a gift he was to our kids. Hearing his documentary highlights, what a wonderful man he was. I did my best in terms of teaching values but this guy solidify my values.

Converting Garage into Mother-In Law Suite

Does anyone have any recommended contractors for converting a garage into a Mother-in-Law Suite? Does anyone know approximately how much this would cost? And does anyone know anything about permits and zoning issues? Thanks!

  • paul in jefferson jefferson park resident

I think I will build one thanks

  • N. McNeal Interested in Lincoln Square and nearby areas

Do you know of any other use for a garage that would be approved by Zoning?

Have a garage that I am trying to convert into a home office, not an apartment. No kitchen and no bathroom. Zoning said that I had to change the scope of work, which to me means that the wording has to be different.

Curious re concrete slab in shared gangway

There are rules for capturing and routing stormwater from rooftops, but I'm curious and wonder if anyone knows of applicable rules/codes for new concrete installation/s?
Assume you have a sidewalk running alongside your structure and the owner of a neighboring structure installs a concrete slab on their side -- do they need a permit? and are they required to install a drainage system such as a trench and grate?
Replacing a huge patch of earth with solid concrete creates a stormwater runoff issue that could affect neighboring property if not contained/managed. Seems sensible there should be a drainage requirement. Anyone know?

  • Abc123 13 yr Old Irv resident, please pick up trash

A very quick summary, you cannot dispense roof or lot drainage water to your neighbor's property or create a nuisance. Its prohibited and I've seen the City respond quickly to such claims. Chicago is a code/no-code/enforce/that'll be ok/hey whatcha got minefield, dress appropriately.

Thank you for the link. That's the first time I have heard of it. Very informative.

I am proud to announce a public draft of the ...

I am proud to announce a public draft of the Jefferson Park Master Plan -- the product of many months of meetings and community collaboration. Please offer your input so we can continue to refine the plan. This plan marks a turning point in Jefferson Park’s revitalization by bringing together all the ideas gathered from surveys, community meetings, and individual comments into one document with a strategy ready for implementation. The draft Master Plan strategy recommends projects in four categories -- Community Character, Economic Development, Transportation, and Design Guidelines. In 2016, my office applied for an RTA grant to launch the Master Plan process, which was done in partnership with the CTA, the Department of Planning and Development and the city Department of Transportation. Teska Associates, the plan consultants, repeatedly met with local businesses and community organizations to help shape the plan. Please take some time to peruse the draft plan. It contains big ideas such as a public plaza on the corner of Lawrence and Milwaukee. It also recommends more immediate goals such as streetscaping Ainslie east of Milwaukee or adding a designated drop-off zone at the Jefferson Park Transit Center. Just having an RTA-sponsored master plan makes Jeff Park eligible for thousands of dollars in grants to improve pedestrian safety. The draft plan is available at www.AccessJeffPark.org I encourage you to comment in the following ways: Submit your comments at www.AccessJeffPark.org E-mail your comments to JeffPark@TeskaAssociates.com Mail feedback to Attn: Jefferson Park Station Area Master Plan, 627 Grove Street, Evanston IL 60201 The next step after public comments is to schedule a City of Chicago Plan Commission Public Hearing. I look forward to your feedback and especially to implementing the great ideas already seen in the Jefferson Park Master Plan.

Photo adds to controversy surrounding Alderman Arena's use of police lot near Wrigley - Nadig Newspapers - Northwest Side Local Newspapers
by BRIAN NADIG and KEVIN GROSS and A Facebook photograph shows that Alderman John Arena (45th) attended a May 11 Cubs game with other elected officials, contradicting his statement to reporters that he parked at the 19th (Town Hall) Police District Station near Wrigley Field so that his 75-year-old mother would not have to walk too far.

What do you expect? He is a POLITICIAN!! That's what they do best!! Create smoke screens so no one ever really knows what underlying cause is behind any statements made, of course until a video or picture tells a 1000 words. Perhaps she was using the restroom at the time the photo was taken?? You never know do you! I am sure anyone in that position can come up with a 1000 more explanations, right?? I'm just sayin...

  • Weebis Politically Incorrect Thought Criminal

Whenever arena's lips are flapping, lies are being uttered.

Even if I didn't know who that was in the photograph, the d-bag vibe is strong with him.

Bucky, arena posted said photo on his FB. No shame in his corrupt game.
