House Break-In on Spaulding

Yesterday at 1:41 pm, an unknown person was caught on video entering my apartment at 1929 N Spaulding. Nothing was taken besides the television remote batteries, but the person was wearing a sweatshirt and big pants, they possibly had a ponytail. Keep alert!

  • Gil, it looks like 49 or so of the 80 notices are for the same building, and some look like duplicates of those.

Probably just one problem building that needed many issues addressed.

Thanks, though, for calling attention to these notices. Very interesting.

Neighbor's tree busting into our space...what are the rules?

We aren't really close with our neighbor but we get along fine. We'd like to keep good relations but wanted to know what the rules are for this kind of situation. We don't want to ask either him of us to take on more than the required responsibility.

Ideally, the tree would be removed, but at least the trimming of all the branches on our side would be done.

Does anyone know the current laws on this? Who pays for these things? Any other suggestions? Thanks!

Lula Cafe Owner Collaborating With 'Indian-ish' Pop-Up Pair on New Logan Square Restaurant
Chicagoans may know chefs Yoshi Yamada and Zeeshan Shah as the dynamic duo behind the unique and modern Indian food served over the years at their Bombay Breakdown pop-up series. The pair have big news: They're collaborating with Lula Cafe and Marisol chef-owner Jason Hammel on a new Logan Square restaurant.

Mailbox Regulations?

Does anyone know if there are regulations for mailboxs? Today my husband was approached by our mail lady. She told him that our block has too many stairs and that we are required to have our mailbox mounted to our wrought iron fence instead of our house. Just wondering if anyone has heard of this or anything similar to this. I found some regulations on the usps website but nothing to answer my question. My mailbox is easily accessible, it just located on my front porch up 8 steps.

Will just lead to you losing all of your packages and correspondence till the end of time, and no, the home office will not do anything about it. Just ignore it and continue on with life and if she brings it up again just tell her sweetly that you called USPS to see what the exact requirements were and they told you that you didn't have to do it, but that you understand her concerns and vaguely suggest you might plan to get around to it at some point...and then leave it be.

It's true that if you get on the postal worker's wrong side you may get missing packages, etc. And it is true that USPS doesn't seem to care and usually doesn't do anything about mail problems, unless they get called out about it on the news.

  • Brandon, I am a Certified Arborist ( IL-9079A if you want to look it up) so my opinion is an educated one. Most saplings do not do well in the shade of a mature tree.

Trees in parks are handled differently than trees on the parkways. Case in point, the Park District is not trying to treat the ash trees.

@Betsy Then you understand that the scientific process requires evidence for your assertion that "most saplings do not do well in the shade of a mature tree." First you must define what you mean by the term "well." If well means a tree must grow straight and perfect fit for a British Queen's garden then I would agree. Saplings in the shade must juke and jive to find their place in a canopy. Well by my defiinition is to provide a canopy that shades the street so it doesn't become a radiating heat sink on hot summer days. Your planting method will never provide that kind of canopy and it lacks redundancy.

The vast majority of saplings will survive in the shade of an older tree. The ones that don't are weak and die. So what. Plant another. Nature is survival of the fittest. Imperfections are what makes nature beautiful, not pretty stained mulch surrounding tree trunks and other plants.

The original article in this thread was about the declining tree canopy. The rigid inside the box thinking by yourself and other "experts" is why the canopy will continue to decline. That the park district chopped down all the Ash trees at Holstein Park reminds me when we used to laugh at the lazy IT guy whose solution to every PC problem was to reinstall the OS. That is a solution to every PC problem but may not be the most effective.

  • Would be very excited about this if done right.

It's not too big, it would support the bars and restaurants already here and hopefully draw in more retail.

Such a great location right between O'hare and the Loop

  • Looks like they were knocking holes in the wall already today.

Que Lastima. 37 years. Wonder what's gonna replace it. Another "upscale" restaurant, or pricey cocktail bar?

  • Or will this in fact make her the greedy landlord now? Of course, she won’t be seeking to maximize rent. I’m sure she’ll rent to a non profit for below market rates.

  • I honestly can’t believe it was open for this long. The neighborhood has changed so much, in terms of demographics. I’ve been here for 24 years. I’m ready to move on as well.

Looking for shared warehouse space

We are a small import company who would like to expand into distribution. All we need is space in a certified warehouse. We don't need much space as we are a small company and this is mostly just for licensing purposes.

  • G

I know not exactly what you are asking for but I have a completely empty 2 car garage available.

  • You might look at The Plant - it's a shared warehouse space. It may not be for you because they do have a lot of expectations about sustainability, etc., but it might be worth looking into: http://plantchicago.org/

Drywall repair and painting - recommendations?

Hi, neighbors! We sustained water damage from the heavy snow and a bad roof over the winter. We're just about done with our roof repairs. (Thanks to all the great recommendations on here, we went with Nyberg Exteriors and have been pleased with their service and professionalism.) Now that the roof is fixed, we need to get the interior drywall on a few ceilings and walls repaired/replaced and painted. Any recommendations from good, honest contractors (who are licensed and bonded)? We haven't been impressed with the ones recommended by our insurance company. Many thanks in advance!

  • HumBo, I am looking for a guy to do some drywall work. In fact I emailed Slobo this morning, sounds like that wont work for me.However, Leo sounds like he could potentially be an option. Just wondering if he has a business website or anything. I like to do some digging around before cold calling. Did he have a business name?

    Thanks

  • MT

Vicente Fernandez did work for us a few times and the drywall quality was great.

"thank god." story about dying dad in hospital, tank on e, needs gas, let me take your number and i'll pay you back. blah blah blah. i swiped my card for her on the pump and left. i knew it was probably a scam. thought, if she just charges the 30 bucks she really needs to get somewhere, it's legit. if she fills it up to 60, it's a scam. well, charge card showed 59 bucks. tonight, day after new years day, another woman (different, yet could have been the first one's mom- both were equally frantic and articulate...i admire their rehearsal skills if nothing else)in a suv waves me over (i'm on foot this time, but same gas station at calf and armitage.) "do you speak english -- thank god." same EXACT script. her mother's in northwestern, card is over-extended, blah blah blah. i guess word got around that it worked, so the scammers are working it. so adjust your need to respond (if any) accordingly. (by the way, i gave the second scammer the loose bills in my purse. it's a REALLY cold day, and she took the time to give me an education. that's always appreciated.)
