Band playing on/near the square?

I keep hearing at least a drummer playing somewhere outdoors. I live near the square, but it’s always late so I admittedly haven’t gone over there to look for myself. Does anyone know what’s going on with that? I don’t recall it happening last year.

Just curious and easily annoyed. :)

Cat Found - Marina, 8 months old

We found a very friendly, young cat in our yard a couple of nights ago when it was storming. It turns out she is microchipped - we learned that her name is Marina and she is 8 months old, but the owner's contact information is private. The chip company has tried to contact the owner but so far, no luck. Did anyone lose this sweet kitten?

Horse Radish? Plants or roots?

I just read where you can freeze the root.

Please e-mail (klh@mindspring.com) if interested. Once you plant it, it is yours for a long time..and the leaves are tall and nice ....and you can dig it and leave part of the root in the ground and it will come back.

  • Hi NW...I don't have rabbits by me (feral cats and lots of backyard dogs..) and the leaves actually smell a little like strong horseradish (well, to me..) -they sure are attractive....so wish I could answer. But you are welcome to try it...(unless these plants would deter the rabbits from he other tasty ones.....just a thought...)

  • A site that lists "safe" things to feed captive rabbits included horseradish. Thinking horseradish may require less watering than turnips. Glad you posted and made me hunt-down more info.
No pesticides in decades here; never will. Neighborhood feral cat is too old and slow to actually nab a rabbit ... saw two hawks fail vs bunny last Spring (yay).

Turtle in need of home!

Hello!
My friend recently moved and asked if I could find a home for her turtle. It has a tank and some food. I cannot keep it sadly! It's name is Baxter and really needs a loving home!

  • Duke Animal at 3900+ N. Ashland also treats turtles, etc. They even have adopted the 'office turtle' named Heidi.

    Please contact Michael..he seems perfect!

  • k_alt Northcenter

One of my friends was able to bring her turtle to the Garfield Park Conservatory to live the rest of it's life with other turtles among the plants. Might be worth contacting them or other conservatories in the area to see if they would take another one. If you do choose to adopt it out to someone please make sure it's someone who knows what they are doing and will care for it well. Sometimes it's hard to tell through the internet if that's going to be the case.

Recommendation for Exterior / Porch Paint and Repair

Fellow EveryBlockers, can anyone recommend someone to handle painting and possibly a few repairs for a painted porch? I have a single family home and need a professional to repaint and possibly a replace a bit of the front porch, e.g., spindles. Recommendations of any professionals you have worked with will be much appreciated.

Sewer drains in gangway

Does anyone know of a sewer company or a plumber familiar with the sewer system in 100+ yr old buildings and where the gangway drain empties. The building shares a common wall with building next door and each gangway has a drain for rain/snow water runoff. Have had a camera line through main drains in both buildings showing no leaks, however there is some heaving in the basement floor of one of the buildings. Any ideas on how to proceed short of digging up the basement floor? Looking for someone who has had experience with old buildings.
Thanks for any help with this.

Most drains, don't necessarily have anything standard, except they usually headed towards the main sewer either at a 90° or some type of 45°. Angled towards the Outlet or the street. If there's an underground downspout drain nearby, it probably heads there, but that's rare in my opinion. A plumber that does a lot of rotting may have a better idea than me on this. Looking down the gangway drain and you can sometimes see the curve of the pipe and the direction that is heading and it's probably a straight line from there to the Sewer or Street.

Thinking about my previous post from this morning detailing "bedrock" being 7-8 feet below Sawyer Avenue, I got curious about the area's geology and found an Illinois State Geological Map: Surficial Geology of the Chicago Region: Chicago Loop Quadrangle published in 1939 covering the North Side from the lake west to Cicero: http://isgs.illinois.edu/node/4856.

There are 3 locations on the north side that have "thinly covered" Silurian Niagaran Dolomite Formations. These would be mounds of limestone (dolomite) just below the surface. One is in Logan Square bounded roughly by Kimball - Belden - St. Louis - McLean (2 streets west of the dig on Sawyer mentioned in my last post), a small spot runs a few hundred feet northeast from Hirsch & Spaulding in West Humboldt Park and a larger dome encompasses Smith Park (surprisingly a former quarry) along with an equally sized area south of Grand Avenue where there is a City of Chicago limestone quarry today. Contrast that to the Loop where it takes approximately 80 feet of digging to reach bedrock (the same dolomite limestone) to support the caissons under Loop high rises.

    Also of interest:
On the same map the shoreline of ancient "Lake Chicago" (an expanded Lake Michigan) was drawn. In Logan Square around 4000 years ago the shore of "Lake Chicago" was a few blocks east and parallel to what is now Milwaukee Avenue. Amazing to think that the Native American trail, now known to us as Milwaukee Avenue, has been in use for over 4000 years!

By the way, this has nothing to do with sewers, but might have relevance for drainage.

Is this a decent price for a hot water heater replacement?

Hi all, my hot water heater has been kind enough to warn me it's about to go. Got a quote for an EB-recommended plumber of $1500 for a 40g gas tank (another $460 to add on a booster valve, which I'm considering). Replacing valves but no need to move gas lines and we can use the existing venting - it is in a tight-fit area. Never done this before, sound about right? Not sure I have time to shop around....this is for a condo I will probably stay in another 2-5 years.

i used logan square pest control once - very honest, they told me I didn't have a problem and didn't charge for showing up. I highly advise against orkin and terminix, it seems they're only concerned about snagging you as a contractual customer through hype (i called orkin once to describe a bug and I got a fast-talking saleperson advising me about what i needed Orkin to do to control my "roach infestation" without ever having seen my place - it was a freaking cricket). do you know what kind of ants you have? usually they are pretty easy to get rid of....unless they are carpenter ants (will find these under sinks/in the bathroom and may have wings). borax works great for all kinds of bugs and I've had luck with Terro products as well. Sweet ants usually don't require professional pest control and carpenter ants usually get in via a tree near/tangent to the house and usually also mean there is water damage somewhere in the building. they can do as much damage as termites. good luck!

Should Chicago have a 'congestion charge'?

For those not familiar with the concept:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_congestion_charge

But the basics are you create a zone where drivers must pay a fee to drive in during certain times of day.

According to the wikipedia entry, London did this and it led to a decrease in cars on the road, pollution, speeds, and increased revenues for the city.

    London congestion charge - Wikipedia
The London congestion charge is a fee charged on most motor vehicles operating within the Congestion Charge Zone (CCZ) in Central London between 07:00 and 18:00 Mondays to Fridays. It is not charged on weekends, public holidays or between Christmas Day and New Year's Day (inclusive). The charge was introduced on 17 February 2003.

Use taxes, you use you pay, is one of the fairest forms of taxation. The tech required to implement this tax can also be used to fine people for running stop signs, not stopping for pedestrians in crosswalks, etc. etc. Pedestrians are in more danger than ever because there is no enforcement for driving recklessly and reckless drivers don't care if they run you over because it's only a $100 ticket and that's if they can't pin the blame on you (i.e. you were walking drunk, not paying attention, wearing headphones, etc.).

I have measured this phenomenon. You can watch a 3 minute snippet at https://youtu.be/3JY0d0adwBY and found that about 1/3 of drivers on the road are dangerous. This is why pedestrians are getting killed so often nowadays.

  • I propose an internet use tax.

I just wanted to make sure that our people knew about the experiences and money lost with this company by me....

No contact information for them...in this post. The contact information I left was for Rocket...unless you are looking at years ago post...WHEN I thought i was doing well with that company..which I thought I was until I hired them again. Until I did extensive research and found they were over-priced, didn't show up, double charged me, and didn't guarantee their work. It was a VERY expensive lesson for me, much time lost, some damage of my property.... and I don't want anyone else to waste their time and money.

Like I said..I'll slow down and do better.

Los Artista Liquors closed? Armitage/California

Curious if anyone knows what's happening with Los Artista Liquors at Armitage and California in the SRO building. They've been closed for a while now, and it appears goods are removed from shelves.

  • North and Artesian has a nice coffee shop, Cup & Spoon....

  • @Rumhamms - not sure, I don't know the person super well, so I can't say

Gunshots - Wabansia & Washtnaw

Heard 5/6 shots just now - 9:40pm, Monday - quickly listened to the scanner and tons of people reported the shots in the alley there. I’m about 10 blocks away but heard them clearly myself. Hope everyone is okay!

  • Meighan 16 years in LS

We heard also and we are at Logan. Wind must have been this way. Scary...no idea what happened.

  • JSK

Wow, the sound traveled far. I listened to the scanner for a bit and about 10-15 neighbors called it in. They narrowed it down to the alley behind 1647 N Washtenaw. Police apparently found no damage, no one shot but found a few casings.

  • From attending the beat meetings, cops don't track shootings unless there is a victim or property damage. If these shootings occur, please email CAPs and the Alderman, to ensure they understand this is still concerning and they can't hide it behind the fact it is not tracked as a stat.

Support the LaTorre Family, a shining line in the Humboldt Park/Logan Square Community

A beautiful, generous and compassionate family of Chase School needs your support. Last month, their 6 month old baby was diagnosed with Muscular Spinal Atrophy. With three other children, and being able to work inconsistently, they need our financial support to pay for their child's numerous treatments to beat all odds and hopefully be a future student of Chase School.

Please consider donating or passing and sharing with friends and family. Let's spread some love :)

The LaTorre family is one of our Chase School families and our hearts have been inclined to help and support them at this time. They live and serve in the west side of Humboldt Park. Surrounded by gang violence, they've set up their home to serve and love the community.

  • I hope the family has already been told about free or low cost assistance from the Muscular Dystrophy Association. www.mda.org While Spinal Muscular Atrophy is a motor neuron disease and not exactly muscular dystrophy, the MDA has a program for persons with SMA.

Azucar Bakery Closes?

Looks like Azucar Bakery on Belmont/Kimball closed. I know they were having trouble with raising rent prices. Not sure Logan Square is going to be SO appealing to all the new high-rise dwellers without any restaurants, cafes and hip little shops to frequent.

  • BW-
When I moved to the neighborhood 18 years ago, realtors told us the border of Logan/ Avondale was officially Belmont. Now some say it's Diversy. It depends on who you ask and I think DNA Info even took a poll once. Doesn't much matter to me, I'm loyal to both neighborhoods at this point

Realtors love to make up neighborhood boundaries. I knew a guy who lived on California and Augusta, his realtor told him he was in west Bucktown. I do miss Logan Beach at times. What ever happened to Virginia?

Dunlays never really fit in, their main store is on Clark and Wellington in East Lakeview. Half Italian was a gem during it's recent and brief time here. Those people worked long and hard in a tough business. Maybe the owners got a job offer with health insurance? Who knows?..... but the rent increase is always an easy reason. I think the Dill Pickle moving in up the street wasn't helpful.

Parts and Labor, yeah I remember that place, it lasted a hot minute.

I was disappointed to learn La Farnie closed. At least the Pickle sells decent baggette. I'm watching a new bakery open on Fullerton between CentralPk and Hamlin.
