Darwin Elementary Local School Council Elections Wednesday, April 18th

Local School Council (LSC) elections for Darwin Elementary, and all CPS Elementary schools, are this Wednesday, April 18th from 6 AM to 7 PM.

If you live in Darwin's attendance boundary you are eligible to vote. I'm including an image of Darwin's boundary but you can also confirm your local school's boundary using the 2018 LSC Election site (http://cps.edu/ScriptLibrary/Map-LSCElections2018/index.html). Type in your address to find the school boundary you are within or type in "Darwin" to see Darwin's enrollment boundary....

All you have to do to vote is go to your neighborhood school between 6 AM through 7 PM with an ID confirming your address within the boundary. You'll be given a ballot and allowed to vote for no more than 5 candidates among both parent and community representatives. Voting for more than 5 candidates will spoil your vote!

I have served as a parent representative at Darwin for two years, where my daughter attends. During my tenure I have asked critical questions about the school's operation and the principal's policies because these decision affect the education of all the children in the school - including my daughter's.

I'd like to ask for your suport for another two years. It's a lot to ask people to take 20-30 minutes out of their day and vote in an election that seems removed from their lives but what happens in your local school really matters to the neighborhood: excellent schools that parents want to attend change the neighborhood for the better.

I've been privileged to work with the following other candidates and wholeheartedly endorse voting for them as well.

For Parent Representative: Jeffrey Young (myself), Erin Rensink, Dawn Herrera Helphand

For Community Representative: Kate Carolan and Amanda Mcbee.

Thank you.

Contrary to the above, I've read that community members need 2 forms of ID with at least one that confirms residence in the attendance boundary. Acceptable forms of ID include:

    Driver's License
    State ID
    Voter Registration Card
    MediPlan/Medicaid Card
    IDPA Card
    Permanent Resident Card
    Matricula Consular
    Student ID
    Public Library Card
    Other Govt issued ID
    Lease
    Utility Bill
    Credit or Debit card
    Employment ID
    Court Documents

I've been at the school most of the day as a pollwatcher. I've seen so many people from the community come in and vote - thank you all for supporting Darwin.

Palmer Sq Zoning and Planning Committee

Hi all, having lived in Palmer Sq for 18 months, I'm looking to get more involved in the zoning and planning dialogue. Does anyone know of a committee that residents can participate in?

Hi Mookie, welcome to Palmer Square! I can suggest a couple of options:
    1) HAPS- If you are living on Palmer Square and own your property, there is a small group called Homeowners of Palmer Square (HAPS). Its bylaws are fairly restrictive, so it limited to owners of property within the 3000-3200 blocks of Palmer. Addresses on Kedzie and Humboldt on Palmer Square itself are also part of the group. I can connect you if this is an interest.
    2) Logan Square Preservation-- this group is the larger Logan Square group that advises on issues in the neighborhood, Palmer Square included. They do have a separate zoning committee.

There may be other groups as well that others will suggest.

  • Thanks Cori! I am a homeowner but do not reside on the square. Maybe I can look into the second option? Thank you!

  • Logan Square Preservation meets at 7pm, the third thursday of every month at the Norwegian Lutheran Minnekirken Church at 2614 N Kedzie, on the square. The April meeting is this thursday night and guests are welcome. Zoning is always a hot topic and new development plans are popping up all over. So if you are free thursday, stop by.
