Puerto Rican pride on display at 40th annual parade
The city lit up with Puerto Rican pride with parades and cultural celebration in two parts of town Saturday. Division Street in Humboldt Park was lined with Puerto Rican flags and alive with music during the 40th annual Puerto Rican People's Parade.

Puerto Rican Day pride on display at 2 Chicago parades
CHICAGO - Saturday's hot weather couldn't temper Puerto Rican Day pride as two parades snaked through city streets - one Downtown and a second in Humboldt Park. For many, this year's parade was more than just a celebration. It was a chance to reflect on everything Puerto Rico has overcome since Hurricane Maria devastated the island in September.

Hi Neighbors,

This post is to notify you all that a steering committee have assembled and filed an application for a Dog Friendly Area (DFA) in Humboldt Park! We have the support of the park manager and the alderman, and there generally seems to be much support from neighbors, but to pull it off we'll need to show a lot of support from dog owners and non-dog owners in the neighborhood.

As some of you may know, we submitted an application at the end of last year, and it came back a few months later, denied not for lack of support or need, but because we simply asked for more land than the parks department maximum allowed for Dog Friendly Areas. With the huge area available in HP we thought it worth trying to break the rule on the premise that it could result in a vaster play area for dogs, and perhaps serve to attract more people to the park from other neighborhoods. We have resubmitted with a smaller designated area (15000 sq. ft.), and are hopeful.

Thanks to the community-minded trailblazers in other neighborhoods, the Parks Department has a fairly comprehensive website on Dog Friendly Areas. See this link:
http://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/facilities/dog-friendly-areas/

If you scroll down there is another link after a few paragraphs, to procedures for establishing a Dog Friendly Area. Anyone interested should familiarize themselves with the process but in summary:

STEP 1. Assemble a steering committee
STEP 2. Communicate with appropriate authorities and establish a suitable location
STEP 3. File an application
STEP 4. If approved, petition neighbors for signatures (100 needed from both dog-owners and non-dog owners)
STEP 5. Conduct surveys of proposed area to determine potential impact, 4x over 1 year.
STEP 6. Raise $ and commit to at least 3 years of ongoing management.

We're in step 3 now, and looking for your support! Please reply below if you support having a Dog Friendly Area in Humboldt Park!

Dog Friendly Areas - Facilities | Chicago Park District
    http://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com
  • We are there now! Places that have petitions available to sign are Archie’s Iowa Tavern, First Ascent, North Clybourn Group, and Boulevard Sports Lounge.

  • I support a dog park!! And I'm not a dog owner!

Shots fired at Grand and Richmond on 6/3 classified as Vandalism: Criminal Damage to Vehicle.

The police had Richmond blocked at Grand and were searching for shells with flashlights. I didn't see anything and then see this listed as vehicle damage. MAYBE a car was shot, but no mention of multiple shots fired? It occurred on the parade weekend, so we initially thought the shots were fireworks.

Then the report was correct. Seeing that the offender was NOT identified, good luck with an arrest. If the boyfriend was identified, he would be charged under domestic violence laws that carry more weight than just criminal damage. Any gun crimes would probably never be made against the offender. Again, that is how Chicago kills gun crimes. When you hear the Mayor say gun crimes are down, it is more likely, reporting them is what is down while they are getting higher every day. I have seen videos of MANY shootings lately and police who answered the call did not make a report. In one case in front of my home, a witness who had dash cam video of an entire shooting with vehicle plates was told to go to the station where he lived with a copy! I say, thank the ACLU for that one. A lot of people on EB defend criminals and their criminal activities, very few support the police that place their lives on the line to protect us. We are on our own and WE are to blame for it. Watch out everyone and be safe.

BOOKKEEPER needed

Hi neighbors-
I am looking for a bookkeeper and a background in real estate would be a bonus. This individual needs to be able to enter receipts/invoices into an exisiting spreadsheet and help organize things between a few properties. This data entry would happen inside my Logan Square home and not an office. I estimate it would take 1-2 weeks initially to catch up and 1-2 days monthly to maintain.

Thanks in advance.

This is great news to many that police are stationed on the street. Everyone knows though that the minute stationed cars leave the criminal eliment will come right back. If the sdsc camera room at 11 would do a better job...things could get better and stay better.

Thanks Superintendent, 1st Deputy, Chief of Technology, Gen Csl and all others helping to clean up the 6-8 block area. That includes Many Commissioners: S&S, CDOT, Water/Sewer, Buildings, Law, DPH...and a host of others.

Now views are unobstructed by tree branches. The Problem needing resolution now is the camera 194 needs to be replaced because images are too grainy.

Does anyone know who can get a camera replaced quickly?

They sometimes get prints off of those spent cartridges and can press changes on the bad guys. Unless you don't care about catching the shooter(s).

It seems like this neighborhood is reverting back to the higher level of shootings that was occurring 8-10 years ago. Is this just the next generation of babybangers that are coming of age or what do you think is going on?

I know the news is disseminating reports that corral your thoughts to believe that shootings and crime is going down citywide...well it may be true for some neighborhoods but we have some serious gang and drug issues in Humboldt Park, Logan Square and Avondale that have been growing especially over the past year or two.

From Chicago Dept of Planning & Development:
A $1 million housing program that preserves affordability along “The 606” Bloomingdale Trail on Chicago’s Northwest Side was introduced to City Council today by Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

The 606 Bloomingdale Trail Home Improvement Program would provide forgivable home improvement grants to owner-occupants of one- to four-unit properties along 1.5 miles of the trail, which runs along Bloomindale Avenue through Logan Square, Humboldt Park and West Town. Portions of each community have experienced gentrification pressures since the trail opened on a former railroad viaduct in 2015.

The grants would cover up to $25,000 for masonry repairs, porch and roof improvements, tuckpointing, door and window repairs, and other exterior upgrades. Up to 30 percent of each grant could also be used to repair select interior health and safety hazards involving plumbing, heating and electrical systems.

Eligible properties must be located within an area generally bounded by Pulaski Road, California Avenue, LeMoyne Street and Dickens Avenue.

The grants are intended to preserve affordability for property owners that have lived in their homes for at least three years and earn up to 120 percent of area median income, or approximately $94,800 for a family of four. Twenty percent of the grant amount would be forgiven for each year of the five-year term. If the owner moves, sells or leases the home before the term expires, the pro-rated balance must be repaid. Other program rules apply.

Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago would administer the program with funding from the City’s Affordable Housing Opportunity Fund. The City would begin accepting applications for the program later this year.

It's better idea than arbitrary $500,000 teardown fee -> slush fund LSNA & corrupt Maldonado and Moreno tried to shovel onto us. However, instead of actual LONG TIME low income property owners (10 yrs or more), flawed proposal allows owners for only 3 yrs to be eligible. During discussion TIF subsidized bloated cost ZAPATA / Bickerdike project in 2009 (which cost taxpayers $400K per 2BR unit!), I proposed same idea of Affordable Housing Repair Fund & Grants to owner occupied SFH and small multi-units. https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/LoganSquare/conversations/topics/21703
"Bickerdike discussion -> different housing aid approach
A different way to use $5 million in housing public funds in Logan Square & HP (HUD grant & Low Income Housing Fund)
Provide $5,000 to $10,000 grants to low income home owners in Logan Square, and owners of 2 flat to 6 flat small buildings here (owner occupied only)

    Grants would help these owners:
    replace inefficient old furnaces
provide matching funds for retrofits like green roof
solar & or rooftop Aerotecture wind installation
    replace old windows (energy efficiency)

this will help struggling low income homeowners and owner occupants of small building apartments maintain and update the solid old housing in LSq

Eligible property owners limited to annual income < $50,000; owner occupied homes or small multiunits only; owned for 10 yrs or more (let's help our struggling long time residents)

FIVE HUNDRED LOW INCOME OWNERS and their LSq housing would benefit if each received $10,000 home improvement grant from $5 million fund pool. Perhaps "energy tax credits" that can further leverage.

Many more families would benefit- tenants in small owner occupied multiunits won't be displaced if struggling landlords get help for a change instead of whacked with more tax increases. Energy efficient updated systems, windows, roof....benefit tenants and the owner (lower costs). 500 home repair / energy efficieny projects thruout LSq means local jobs."

Window glazing retailer?

I have been using Joe's Hardware for my glass purchases and window sash glazing since before I moved west of Western (and I have been here over 10 years). With them now closed, I need a new place to go.

Who do you use?

  • I second Yu Hardware...excellent service and they put up with my stupid questions...I always learn a lot from them...enough to replace my own glass garage windows......and they are great at other items as well!

  • Mike Conover '90's HP block orginizing,CAPS- resident since '07

My plumber enjoys working with "the chinaman", but I haven't been in the door there (just not convenient for me). I HAVE used Gilman's, and will do so more in the future. Thanks. My understanding is that the brother's cashed out of the building. great for them, and they deserve it, but too bad for the neighborhood.

Rats!

Neighbors,
I've noticed increase rat traffic in the front yard and sidewalks on my street. They are strolling down the side walk, frolicking in and around trees in the parkway, and scurrying in the front of mine and my neighbors yards. While my words may be lighthearted in nature, i ask in all seriousness what, if anything, can be done to combat this. I plan to call Maldonado and 311, but doubt there is much they can do since this is not about baiting the alley, since we are talking about the front yards and parkways. Any recommendations on non-toxic sprays i can use that's safe for children and pets.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

  • I just read an article..but it was for mice in your garden...that you put the instant mash potatoes in a place and when they eat it and it hits liquid, it expands and kills them....
Don't know if it works for rats...BUT if yo do try it, please don't put it where other animals can get it...

  • lots of good ideas here but at report it to 311 or the link so it gets recorded.

Bad off-leash neighbor!

I'm sharing this message because this guy needs to be identified and told this behavior is not only wrong, it's dangerous! I'm sharing this message because this guy needs to be identified and told this behavior is not only wrong, it's dangerous! A man with two dogs (large fox terrier breed, one brown, one light) was super rude and confrontational with me and my baby in a stroller by the beach in Humboldt Park. I was trying to control my dog (on leash) who was getting agitated as his dogs approached off-leash and he wouldn't call them off. He saw me struggling with a stroller, and a baby, and my dog and said to me it was "his park" and he's lived here longer than me and made zero attempt to call his dogs over. Total jerk and dangerous behavior! Then I hear from another mom, this same man with two dogs off leash came by. The mom asked him to put his dogs on a leash after his dogs came very near her two boys. This man got in her face, yelling. He finally left. She was very shaken and was crying. She thought he was going to hit her. She called the police but they did not come. Whoever this guy is, you don't own the park! You apparently take pride in his well trained your dogs are but a) you never know what animals will do and b) other people may be afraid or not want your dog's around them, especially kids. If you know who I'm talking about let him know his behavior is unacceptable!

This is the second story in a week I have heard about this specific guy terrorizing a mom with her kids! Its against the law to have dogs off leash. I mean, he is not only putting other people and dogs in danger but he is putting HIS dogs in danger as well! I will be on the look out for this guy. Im there all the time with my toddler.

That man has been a maniac for years there with those dogs.Do not lie though and say the dogs attacked your child. You don't want to be arrested because of him.Definitely take pictures even video it with sound so the police can see exactly what a menace this guy is.
