Do not eat any kind of romaine lettuce, CDC warns
Public health officials are telling people to avoid all romaine lettuce. An E. coli outbreak linked to the vegetable has spread to at least 16 states and sickened at least 60 people, including eight inmates at an Alaska prison.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday that new information about the illnesses in Alaska led them to expand an earlier warning to avoid chopped romaine.. The CDC now says people should not eat any type of romaine lettuce, including whole heads and hearts of romaine. The exact source of the tainted lettuce has not been identified, but federal officials have said the contamination appears to come from lettuce grown in the Yuma, Ariz., region.
At least 31 people have been hospitalized, including five who developed a type of potentially life-threatening kidney failure known as hemolytic uremic syndrome. No deaths have been reported.

Don't count on a progressive income tax to bail out Illinois

There aren't enough taxpayers or ANY income level to bail out Illinois of its financial mess. The only help the federal government can provide will be a law to enable Illinois to declare bankruptcy:

Those wealthy people you are slamming donate millions of dollars to charity, including museums, theaters etc. There are a lot of lower income people that also donate what they can. Bottom line we aren't in the upper 9% but are weighing our options because it is simply becoming impossible to keep up with the rising taxes and fees and fund our own retirement.

It looks like the convenience store moved a couple doors west on Lunt. Anyone know what’s going in their former space? Perhaps BBQ Supply is expanding..
Also, a ‘for rent’ sign has been put up in the window at Mike’s Place.
Change is a coming.

Hope these properties don't stay vacant vacant long.

Missing 7-pound Maltese back home

Dolma, the super-cute 7-pound Maltese, has been reunited with her mistress in the 6600 block of North Talman. Dolma was in the front yard in the care of a visitor who turned his back for a second, and Dolma bounded away and out of sight. The next day, a neighbor living a block away saw a Maltese wandering aimlessly, and noticed printed notices on lamp posts about a lost Maltese. When he asked, “Are you Dolma?” and Dolma picked up her ears, he carried her back to her house and a grateful owner.
Much relieved and thankful to all who cared.

Our neighbor in the 6700 block of North Talman is missing her seven-pound white Maltese since Tuesday around noon.
The dog, Dolma, is as tiny as a seven-pound dog would be, and she is as cute as all that suggests. And she is desperately missed.

Yes, I’m still here.
It’s been a tough year so far, beginning with the death of Mr. Cat, my feline companion for more than 18 years...and I miss him every day.
Then I had eye surgery, and serious complications from which I am still recovering.
And then came the March election,, with yet another carpetbagger from the Indo-American Democratic Organization moving into the state senatorial district barely a year before the election, and running a divisive campaign centered around slinging mud at an already-disgraced incumbent. He was aided in this by various special interests, and will no doubt be a reliable vote for those interests in Springfield. His campaign suggests that he will lower the ethical level in Springfield yet another notch.
You can bet he’ll have his own candidate for alderman, and probably, when the time comes, for committeeman as well. Deals are being discussed as you read this, and deals cost money, and money is being raised, lots of it. Google Illinois Sunshine database and check out who’s giving–and who gave and expects to be rewarded.
The aldermanic race begins later this year, officially. In actuality, serious candidates have been talking to potential donors since last year. Who will run? Debra has been raising money, and Ira’s loss of both his leadership position and his senate seat suggests that she’ll want to keep her job, which pays $120,000 per year. Nobody has openly declared but I hear there are at least three potential candidates exploring the possibility of running.
It’s going to be an interesting summer, and I’m feeling better already.
I just love a good fight.

Chicago pension catastrophe is imminent -- and worse than we thought

Teachers whop are agitating for increased salaries in West Virginia, Oklahoma and other states are harbingers of the political and social unrest that Chicago and Illinois are headed for this year.

Daley kicked the can down the road by generously caving to union demands from city workers and then balancing the city's budget by not funding the pension plans. And few, including all those "investigative reporters" and editorialists in the media and civic boosters understood or acknowledged what was happening; the few who did were dismissed as anti union conservatives who didn't like Daley.
When Daley realized his whole artificial edifice was finally going to crash he didn't run for re election, blaming the death of wife. He, a failed lawyer who barely passed the bar, not to mention getting thru law school, now lives lavishly, cashing in on his extravagant pension and plus "consulting work" for law firms and businesses. Oh yes, and on his investments from the glorious kickbacks he received while in office.
And yet, he was easily re elected every year.
Whatever you may think of him, Rahm Emanuel is doing a fine job of trying to clean up the filthy, illegal, twisted and perverted poisonous mess that is Daley's legacy. It is an impossible task.
And btw, thanks to Daley and that other good ole Dem boy, Pres Bill Clinton, Chicago teachers must rely on their pensions as they can't get Social Security even if they accumulated the required 40 quarters. If they try, a certain amount is deducted.
And the state, under the Dems, in in an equal mess. Remember that when you vote.Remember that free stuff ain't free. And taxing the rich means taxing everyone and everything--including sweetened beverages. If not that, then something else.

Sad that people cant talk freely without offending everyone because they have become to sensitive. the world would rather be lied to then face the truth the irony behind that as back in the back telling the truth actually lessoned the punishment of the crime.

As a Member of the Illinois Legislative Ethics Commission, which oversaw the investigation of Senator Silverstein related to a sexual harassment complaint, I had pledged to the Niles Township Democrats and informed all parties involved in the 8th State Senate district Democratic primary, including Senator Silverstein, that I would remain neutral. Senator Silverstein’s mail piece compromised that neutrality. Now I am no longer neutral.
Today, I endorse Ram Villivalam for the Illinois State Senate as I believe he possesses the integrity becoming of a legislator.

Boone Elementary School held their first ever McTeacher's Night Fundraiser at the Chicago McDonald's on Peterson Ave. A McTeacher's Night is organized to help raise money for local schools by having teachers work at McDonald's and then giving a percentage of the night's sales back to the local school. What an amazing night for Boone.
On Thursday, March 8th, the restaurant was taken over by twenty Boone teachers and administrative staff excited to serve freshly prepared meals to students and their families. Teachers handed out orders, cleaned tables, made ice cream treats, served drinks, prepared fries and even dressed up in a Pie costume. Teachers Plaza and Krantz took turns dressed in the Pie outfit almost the entire night and what a blast they had mingling with all the families and taking pictures. Principal Delaney was also in attendance and enjoyed the evening. Principal Delaney played guitar with music teacher Donlin while the Boone 2nd graders sang. Teacher Pratts was there too and helped the singing second graders with their dance moves. Assistant Principal Quakinbush was also in attendance and enjoyed the evening.
The funds earned from the Pie sales and tips will go directly to support teacher appreciation initiatives, and school equipment and school events.
A special thank you goes to Savitha Skowligy, who organized the event as well as everyone who worked and attended.

I am all for school fundraising. I did many events when my son was in school. I question having McDondald's use this audience to further their business. They do not serve healthy food and they support industrial farming as well as underpay their employees. It is not the place you want your kids to eat at. I am sure their are other places where a similar event can be held.Holding it at a restaurant that serves healthy food would introduce the idea of healthy food to the children for better life long habits.
The idea of McTeachers sounds like a corporate highjack for their own benefit. I am happy it raised money for a great cause but McDonald's is just not good for the planet ( the drive thru they created not only increases obesity but also contributes to all the McDonald's litter I pick up on my parkway almost daily) I am sure you could find a better venue. When the new library opens in Rogers Park, it may be a great place to offer an event around story telling similar to a Moth event. No need to include food. Just an idea.

We currently are looking for forever homes for adult or baby bunnies. These are a big responsibility. They are a rare an exotic and beautiful breed and grow to be very large. They have been hand handled since birth and are used to being with a human many hours a day. They eat a lot and need a lot of care. This is NOT a low maintenance pet.
We are also looking for volunteers who can help us take care of the animals or to help us teach others how to take care of animals.
Please call our office at 773-937-7527
We screen and follow all families who adopt the animals and we partner with Chicago animal rescue.

Finally, note that thieves are most interested in new tires and expensive wheels. If you don't provide them, you'll make your car a lesser target. Personally, I've always refused to pay for fancy, optional wheels, preferring the old style ones that generally come with cheesy hubcaps. I also don't bother with tire treatments that make the tires look shiny new. My car (a minivan) has never seen the inside of a detailing shop. Obviously, I'm not what you'd call a "car guy", because if I were, I couldn't stand to own a car that looks like mine. (Heck, would a real "car guy" be caught dead with the title deed to a minivan in the first place?) But when you live in a neighborhood known to be frequented by parts thieves, there's a lot to be said for the gritty look.
Thieves can buy key sets that include the lug nut lock keys as well. The next best defense is a quality alarm system that has a tilt sensor so when the car is jacked up the alarm goes off. My friend just had one installed by a local shop in wrp called mi sound chicago. They do great work.
