Neighbor Dispute

My parents just informed me of this. I am so upset. Maybe you guys can help.

My dad's neighbor asked me dad to go half and half on a new fence between their house. The fence was supposed to be high so it could keep his huge dog from jumping to my parents yard. Well my dad gave him 1,000 cash about 2 months ago.

No fence yet. When my dad asked for an update on the fence, the guy flat out told me dad he spent the money and won't put it up anymore. My dad asked for his money back and guy said no!

My dad is partially blind, and he is so naive. He did not sign an agreement or anything and doesn't want us to get involved. I am so irritated that this man took advantage of him!

There are no receipts or agreements, just a video my mom took of them without them knowing. The video shows my dad giving him the money and the guy saying he will put it up within a week.

Is there anything my parents can do?

  • Call the Illinois Attorney General Office to see if an advocate for the senior citizen consumer fraud hotline will take the case at 1-800-206-1327 or refer you to someone who can. I have a proud dad the same age who finds himself in similar situations. I give him resources and offer help. Sometimes they listen to others outside the family.

Yes, please do call. & don't let this rat neighbor think this is something easy to do and get away with. Be careful, watch your language, etc. Don't let this get into a separate confrontation. But the Atty General's office is a good place to start.
    Good Luck

courtesy Eugene "Eda" Wade At the southeast corner of 43rd Street and Langley Avenue, the ghosts are still trying to speak. It's an unremarkable corner in a rebounding niche of Bronzeville, occupied by a blandly newish subsidized town-house apartment building. But in the late 1960s this corner was the site of the nation's most renowned African-American mural.
