Our Nation grieves with those affected by the shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas. May God heal the injured and may God comfort the wounded, and may God be with the victims and with the victims’ families. As a mark of solemn respect for the victims of the terrible act of violence perpetrated on May 18, 2018, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, May 22, 2018. I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same length of time at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this eighteenth day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand eighteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-second.

LaBagh Woods offers great recreational, aesthetic and ecological value to the people of Chicago, and serves as a habitat for migratory birds and diverse wildlife. The privately owned, wooded property at 4357 W Bryn Mawr is a seamless addition to the forest preserve and contributes to the quality of life and property values that the families of Sauganash and neighboring communities enjoy.

We were dismayed to learn that in spite of strong community opposition, the City Council voted to rezone this land from POS-1 (Regional or Community Park) to RS-1. This will allow developers to strip this land of its trees and wildlife in order to construct single family homes.

We believe that to divest the people of Chicago of even a single parcel of forested land should be as unthinkable as privatizing a stretch of the lakefront. The parcel in question, though privately owned, provides great value to the community and the region as undeveloped open space. We therefore ask that you sign this petition to express your concern and opposition to development at this location. We further ask that you reach out to your elected City and County officials to voice your opposition to the development, and urge them to work with the community and the owner of the parcel to reach an equitable compromise.

North Branch Trail Alliance of Greater Chicago Awarded “Advocate of the Year” by the Active Transportation Alliance (ATA)

The North Branch Trail Alliance (NBTA) of Greater Chicago is excited to announce that it was awarded the “Advocate of the Year Award for 2017” by the Active Transportation Alliance (ATA), Chicagoland’s leading voice for biking, walking, and transit. Steve Simmons, ATA Trail Advocacy Manager presented the award and said, “We’re grateful to be working closely with NBTA to advance trail networks along the river. Trails strengthen economic development and provide users with lasting cultural experiences. NBTA has made a valuable contribution to trail development by hosting bike rides, partnering on workshops, and joining the Chicago River Trail Coalition.”

Jac Charlier, NBTA President said “For NBTA to receive this recognition of the local economic development work we are doing that’s helping our neighborhood downtowns from Albany Park to Mayfair, Forest Glen to Edgebrook, to Niles, Morton Grove, Glenview and beyond, speaks to the value of moving from mostly seeing bike trails for ‘health and hobby’ to understanding them as real economic drivers for our small businesses.” Charlier said that NBTA is currently seeking businesses as well as Chambers of Commerce interested in becoming NBTA 2018 Business Partners.

The next NBTA ride will be on Saturday, May 19 at 11:30 AM, with the theme “Icons of our Northwest Area.” More about NBTA at www.northbranchtrailalliance.com on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Public health officials are telling people to avoid all romaine lettuce. An E. coli outbreak linked to the vegetable has spread to at least 16 states and sickened at least 60 people, including eight inmates at an Alaska prison.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday that new information about the illnesses in Alaska led them to expand an earlier warning to avoid chopped romaine.. The CDC now says people should not eat any type of romaine lettuce, including whole heads and hearts of romaine. The exact source of the tainted lettuce has not been identified, but federal officials have said the contamination appears to come from lettuce grown in the Yuma, Ariz., region.

At least 31 people have been hospitalized, including five who developed a type of potentially life-threatening kidney failure known as hemolytic uremic syndrome. No deaths have been reported.

Missing 7-pound Maltese back home

Dolma, the super-cute 7-pound Maltese, has been reunited with her mistress in the 6600 block of North Talman. Dolma was in the front yard in the care of a visitor who turned his back for a second, and Dolma bounded away and out of sight. The next day, a neighbor living a block away saw a Maltese wandering aimlessly, and noticed printed notices on lamp posts about a lost Maltese. When he asked, “Are you Dolma?” and Dolma picked up her ears, he carried her back to her house and a grateful owner.

Much relieved and thankful to all who cared.

On this solemn day, we mourn the loss of Barbara Bush, an outstanding and memorable woman of character. As a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, military spouse, and former First Lady, Mrs. Bush was an advocate of the American family. https://50thwardfollies.com/2018/04/13/a-tough-year-so-far/

Yes, I’m still here.

It’s been a tough year so far, beginning with the death of Mr. Cat, my feline companion for more than 18 years...and I miss him every day.

Then I had eye surgery, and serious complications from which I am still recovering.

And then came the March election,, with yet another carpetbagger from the Indo-American Democratic Organization moving into the state senatorial district barely a year before the election, and running a divisive campaign centered around slinging mud at an already-disgraced incumbent. He was aided in this by various special interests, and will no doubt be a reliable vote for those interests in Springfield. His campaign suggests that he will lower the ethical level in Springfield yet another notch.

You can bet he’ll have his own candidate for alderman, and probably, when the time comes, for committeeman as well. Deals are being discussed as you read this, and deals cost money, and money is being raised, lots of it. The aldermanic race begins later this year, officially. In actuality, serious candidates have been talking to potential donors since last year. Who will run? Debra has been raising money, and Ira’s loss of both his leadership position and his senate seat suggests that she’ll want to keep her job, which pays $120,000 per year. Nobody has openly declared but I hear there are at least three potential candidates exploring the possibility of running.

It’s going to be an interesting summer, and I’m feeling better already.

I just love a good fight.

    A Tough Year So Far
Yes, I'm still here. It's been a tough year so far, beginning with the death of Mr. Cat, my feline companion for more than 18 years. He was wonderfully intelligent, fearless, and the real boss of our household, lording it over a succession of dogs and humans.

April 9, 2018 street sweeping tickets canceled

The Department of Streets and Sanitation canceled street sweeping Monday due to the unexpected snow. If you received a street sweeping violation on April 9, 2018, you may disregard it as all street cleaning tickets issued yesterday will be voided by the Department of Finance.

Street sweeping will continue as usual on Tuesday on posted streets. The only areas affected by Monday's snow were parts of Section 4 (Ridge to Western between Touhy and Pratt) and Section 15 (Western to Oakley between Touhy and Birchwood).

Edgebrook Resident Mike Royko's April 5, 1968 Article on the Assassination of Dr. King (Post 2 of 2)

And behind them were the subtle ones, those who never say anything bad but just nod when the bigot throws out his strong opinions.

He is actually the worst, the nodder is, because sometimes he believes differently but he says nothing. He doesn’t want to cause trouble. For Pete’s sake, don’t cause trouble!

Give some credit to the most subtle of the subtle. That distinction belongs to the FBI, now looking for King’s killer.

That agency took part in a mudslinging campaign against him that to this day demands an investigation.

The bullet that hit King came from all directions. Every two-bit politician or incompetent editorial writer found in him, not themselves, the cause of our racial problems.

It was almost ludicrous. The man came on the American scene preaching nonviolence from the first day he sat at the wrong end of a bus. He preached it in the North and was hit with rocks. He talked it the day he was murdered.

Hypocrites all over this country would kneel every Sunday morning and mouth messages to Jesus Christ. Then they would come out and tell each other, after reading the papers, that somebody should string up King, who was living Christianity like few Americans ever have.

Maybe it was the simplicity of his goal that confused people or the way he dramatized it.

He wanted only that black Americans have their constitutional rights, that they get an equal shot at this country’s benefits, the same thing we give to the last guy who jumped off the boat.

So we killed him. Just as we killed Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy. No other country kills so many of its best people.

Last Sunday night the President said he was quitting after this term. He said this country is so filled with hate it might help if he got out. Four days later we killed a Nobel Peace Prize winner.

  • I remember this day and the many others like it. Thank you for posting.

  • Thank you for posting. How sad that 50 years later we are still fighting the same hatred and bigotry.
