Read All About It! FAiR Newsletter February 2018 is Out - Jet Noise and Health

Greetings My Neighbors,

Sharing this with you from the Fair Allocation in Runways (FAiR) Coalition. The lead story is about the impact of airplane noise on and in our lives.

JET NOISE AND HEALTH

Chicago and suburban residents under the O’Hare flight paths currently experience jet noise in the range of 65 - 110 decibels on a 24/7 basis. Those living immediately adjacent to the boundary of O’Hare, like the residents of Park Ridge, Bensenville, and the 41st Ward, experience noise levels close to 120 decibels (the sound at which aircraft take off).

Vandalism over parking spaces

Someone vandalized our car with nail polish in apparent retribution for parking in the space on the street which they had laid "dibs" on (a spot which, incidentally, we actually dug out ourselves earlier in the day, not that it matters). I assume this is what happened because when we came home and found some stuff sitting in ('claiming') the space, we moved it on to the curb so we could park. The next morning the car had been vandalized. We did not submit a police report yet. It saddens me that some people living on my own block are so craven and idiotic. Anyway, I will refrain from calling out the the address where this occurred (and in whose front yard we saw the items that we moved out of the parking spot). I assume it is against the rules. I suppose it's no news to anyone that you risk vandalism parking on the street. This does seem like a generally nice neighborhood though.

  • That is so wrong -- sorry it happened to you.

  • That is terrible. Those who participate in "dibs" are selfish, entitled, un-neighborly brats. The fact that it is not only tolerated in the city, but celebrated is disgusting.

  • I would file a police report just in case you have to file a claim with your auto insurance carrier down the road. How unfortunate that you have such selfish people living on your block. Better days ahead.

I was just curious if Albany Park or closely surrounding areas have something like the following available?

It seems like a good way to circumvent net neutrality ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltzy5vRmN8Q ) issues and provide a necessary/needed service to local communities.

Like they're doing in Detroit:

I haven’t heard of anything like this in the area, but it’s interesting, and something I’ve thought about trying to do on a smaller scale, perhaps only for my block.

It ultimately wouldn’t circumvent any net neutrality issues, as you still need to go through an available ISP at some point, and those choices are limited, but after the buildout costs, it may be helpful in providing lower cost internet. I have limited experience with outdoor setups however, and I’m curious what kind of performance hit a modern WiFi mesh network will take in a good rainstorm. WiFi and water don’t play well together. While not an issue for an outdoor venue, where people would be less likely to be using it in the rain, if it were my primary home internet, it would be pretty lousy if speeds suffered every time it rained. Chicago building/construction codes might also be an obstacle.

All that and the tiny voice in my head still saying “you don’t want to be an ISP”!

Katie and Kodi, both valid. Katie your friend should respond to those reviews-he can do that easily. Most people read the reviews and responses and tell if the customer is just a crazy person who cannot be pleased, or if there is a legitimate issue. And the way a business owner responds is huge. Sometimes jobs go bad and it is how those situations are handled by the business owner that reflect on how the company will deal with issues. I have had better luck with Angie's contractors than by anyone else, and that includes direct referrals. My friend referred a tuck pointer to me, who left a huge mess and globs of mortar all over my sidewalk and grass. And the job looked sloppy. I had an Angie's list tuck pointer come straighten things out.

Also as far as not getting the bad reviews off, my electrician actually mentioned he had that issue on Angies List. He complained about it, and what he said Angies List does is reach out to the complainer. They then give it one week. If the complainer does not respond, the review is removed. If the complainer insists they have the right company, then the review stays. He also said that companies such as his, which have a lot of reviews on Angies List, tend to deliver much better customer service for fear of getting a bad review. Since the Yellow Pages is pretty much a thing of the past, most contractors that are larger than a mom and pop size operation, rely heavily on reviews to stay busy. Google, Angies, Yelp, etc. Also be cautious of awards-for example Chicago's Best is an award that a contractor buys, according to another electrician who is a personal friend!

Water line install pipe replacement Referrals needed

When you say waterline, are you referring to the water service? This is the line that brings water from the municipal main to your building. If that’s the case, then your choices among plumbing contractors is going to be more limited than for work that does not involve going into the public way, which is required to replace a water service. Depending on the current size and fixture count, you may we’ll need to go into the street, requiring a street opening permit among other things. I’m not certain of the age of your 3 flat, but many older buildings in Chicago have a 1 inch lead (or iron) water service which no longer meets current code. You will need to bring things up to current code once you expose it. We do not do water services yet-it is one of the very few services we do not offer (but are looking to in the not too distant future) but would be happy to refer you to someone. If you are looking for inside plumbing, I’d be happy to give you any advice or take a look at things if you’d like.

Want to know more about this national holiday? Keep reading.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent
question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” Against what seemed like
impossible odds, Dr. King and scores of his fellow citizens of all races came
together and, ultimately, helped bend the moral arc of the universe toward
justice. In recognition of Dr. King’s incredible legacy of service to all, Congress
designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of
service in 1994, and charged the Corporation for National and Community
Service with leading this effort. Taking place each year on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – a “day on, not a day off.” Today's commemoration of the MLK Day of Service on Monday, January 15 is an opportunity to remember that history. It is also a time to consider how much work still remains to fulfill Dr. King’s dream.

My brother went to Gordon Tech in the 1990s and loved the auto and wood shops among other things. It is now called DePaul College Prep. My son is in the 6th grade and we are starting to look at high schools. A couple of items on their website alarmed me. One is that it seems that with the change to DePaul CP, they also did away with all shop classes. While my son wants to go to college, I felt it important that he learn to work with his hands as well. It seems so many people go to college only to come out and struggle to find work. Yet I have a friend who is an electrician and he makes fantastic money, and has always been busy.

The other concern was, is DePaul CP a racist school? I see they have a Black Student Union, but none for whites! I do not want to send my son to a racist school since we are a family that is proud of what God made us (I am white, my wife is Hispanic) so we would not mind him joining a group of others that would share like minded ideas about their culture, as I am sure the Black Student Union does, but to have one and not the other worries me in that, this may be a school that teaches that some races deserve special treatment based solely on the color of their skin. Does anyone have experience with DePaul CP? Many thanks for advise. We have a couple of years, but time passes quickly!

Yes these are both true. My electrician friend says that another complaint he has is when his customers go on youtube, assume each job is just like it is on the internet and then question his price, yet are unable to turn a screwdriver on their own. He charges $185 per hour for his labor rate, and even with overhead, that is not a bad living.
