Chicago Water Meter

Hey Everyone, we purchased our Single Family home a little less then a year ago & we do not have a water meter installed. Our current water bill is just under $500 (6 months) for 2 people. What is everyone's experience with this? Is it beneficial to get the meter installed?

  • LarryB Dog owner / wine sipper

ED, the meter has always been in the parkway. We have been here in Avondale since 1985. Best call water dept. good luck

  • Just piling on ... yes, definitely get a meter ... My 2-flat rate for metered water, sewer, and trash is about $75 every 2 months ... If I were SF it would be a little less b/c I pay a higher rate for multiple units for trash. One human per unit plus 2 dogs ;)

Guy rings doorbell asking to speak about one of the politicians running.

Yesterday I had a gentleman ring my doorbell, ask for me by first name but said he is hoping for my vote? How would they get my name if the apt is under my gfs name? I didn't open the door but thought that was odd.

I am more or less confused, dont think he was malicious, but found it strange.

  • Kerry Anne, please look again. The cost of those "tax cuts" will conveniently begin to come due just after Trump leaves office (or 4 years afterward, if he doesn't get a second term). Convenient, isn't it? So the next guy up will inherit the blame. And please note, I say 'begin.' Has he really bought his supporters off with a minor short term gain while selling our economic future down the river?

Shootings near Ridgeway & Milwaukee

There have been shootings in this area before, but this week on 2/15 and 2/14/18 a couple of cars, one being a black Honda Civic, with their lights turned off have openly shot at the house second to last from the alley near Ridgeway and Milwaukee. If I had to guess, it’s the house with the 2984 address that got shot at.

Dibs are not only Unappreciated, but Also Illegal

Hey everyone, I know with the snow this year it's a real pain in the butt to dig your car out from the side of the road. But dibs are tacky, unhelpful, and make our beautiful neighborhood look like a dump. If everyone who dug out a spot left the spot, there would be a spot for everyone who needed one.

None of us own the streets in Chicago and none of us can claim ownership of a parking spot on these public ways. I don't even park on the street, but if I see dibs I unequivocally move them up onto the sidewalk in an unobtrusive area.

Be a good neighbor - don't place dibs.

Ice Dam...water dripping into back rooms

Hello neighbors. Woke up to frozen interior rear stairs and some pretty bad leaks in the back rooms this morning. Looks like Ive got one helluvan ice dam. Anyone have a reputable company they can recommend to clear the ice today? Or any other recommendations? Trying to prevent thousands in water damage. Thanks for your help.

  • Do you have anyone that you would recommend to install the ice cables? I have a huge issue I'm a second-story roof gutter area and have since I moved in 5 years ago. I have an ice dam on the south side of my house and this year is three times larger than last year. I'm pretty sure that those ice cables would solve my problem!

  • It can be a bit complicated to install the melt cables as it requires power. The cables I am familiar with are plug-in, so getting a new wet-use electric line run to your roof or near your roof with an outdoor use waterproof box/pipe/connectors and GFCI outlet can be the...

It can be a bit complicated to install the melt cables as it requires power. The cables I am familiar with are plug-in, so getting a new wet-use electric line run to your roof or near your roof with an outdoor use waterproof box/pipe/connectors and GFCI outlet can be the main expense.

As far as operation is concerned, they sell accompanying plug-in thermostats for $17 that will allow power to your melt cable based on the outdoor temperature hitting a certain reading. Personally I think this is a waste of energy as then the cable will be on when it is cold and not snowy as well as when there is snow.

I like them on a switch in the basement that I control. Or on a multi-level structure you can have the power line run somewhere under the back porch.

I'm not a fan of Home Depot due to their policy or frequent decision of re-stocking returns that customers have brought back as broken or missing parts, but there is a video on ice melt cable installation there. I hate it when I have to go back because I was sold some broken or incomplete garbage. I've had plenty of good experience at HD, also but they simply and easily could do better. Another beef is if there is one certain thing I need there is a shelf label there, the wrong thing is in that spot, and there are 28-49 of each item next to it and zero of the item I need.

Here is the product and video link:

My assumption based on the blatant lack of a description-3 black men, 18-34 years of age, pants that are too big, sports shoes, 5'10-6'2 inches in height, 180-220lbs. Thank the PC blind media for my assumption. I am just going by typical perps for these things.

Bandanas and hoodies pulled low to obscure the faces of the offenders and witnesses who say “I don’t know” when asked the race of the muggers would prevent the PD from identifying the race of the suspects. Has nothing to do with being “PC” if the police literally don’t know the race of the muggers.

Not a Nanny Share but I have a small in-home daycare located by Elston & Irving Park with over 18 yrs. of experience and I am CPR certified. I provide healthy, well balanced meals and snacks in a loving and nurturing environment, have excellent references from past and present parents and I charge reasonable rates. Some of our daily activities include music, play and story time along with plenty of outside time in our beautiful gated and grassy courtyard.

I know how difficult it is to leave your child with someone but I assure you I will give your little one all the love, attention and care they need unlike some of those huge daycare facilities. I would love the opportunity to care for your little one, so please contact me for more information or to set up an appointment to come by and see the beautiful set up. Thank you!

LOST Cat - 100$ Reward

Hi everyone. Our forever outdoor cat Baxter (gray and white tabby on left in second picture) is still missing. We’ve never been able to keep a collar on him, he’s been neutered, not chipped. Small rip in left ear. Please be on the lookout and let me know if anyone has seen him. Please also take a minute to check any garages, basements, outdoor crawl spaces or under decks/porches, or basically anywhere a cat could sneak in to hide or get stuck. They are curious animas.
You may also call the number 773-407-6961 if you have any details regarding him or have seen him. A 100$ reward is up. Please and thank you.

  • We are a ways away but I will definitely watch for him and keep you in our thoughts. As someone who loves cats, it's easy to imagine how hard this must be.

  • Thank you all. We’re still holding out hope. I will give treehouse a call. We’ve checked with them to see if anyone brought a cat in like him but no luck yet. I don’t think he would gravitate to a colony but you never know.

Anyone else have a gas outage around the Sacramento / Elston block?

Apparently there's a gas outage in the neighborhood from what a PeoplesGas person told me.

  • Yeah, I saw a bunch of ComEd trucks and crews on Belmont between Troy and Sacramento last night around 6, looks like they were about to start digging up the street too.

  • I'm on Sacramento approximately at Addison and did not have any gas outage.

Lost Wallet

Shot in the dark here...

I lost my wallet in the area of Berteau and Leavitt. If you've found it, please let me know. It's a men's brown leather wallet containing my DL and a debit card that's been temporarily frozen. The initials on the DL are JWB. Thanks

Former site of Strack and van Til grocery store

It looks like some work is being done where the former Strack and Van Til grocery store was at 2627 N. Elston. No signs up, so wondering if anyone knows what will be going in there.

Parking spaces for rent?

Wondering if anyone has any parking spaces for rent near Mozart and Berteau. Parking can sometime be difficult and I get home late and a parking space would be a huge help to my daily struggles for parking. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Parking garage

Recently I have come to need a parking garage in order to do some maintenance on my car, and store tools. Does anyone have a 1 or 2 car garage for rent somewhere nearby on a month to month lease?
