Albany + Diversey corner store shut down?

I noticed a big orange CLOSED by the City of Chicago as of 5-22-2018 sign on the front door of Diversey Market at the corner of Albany and Diversey. This place was recently sold (I think?) and renovated within the past few weeks. Does anyone know why it has been shut down? The sign had no details, and the store was open on Monday.

  • The store sold loosies, had questionable stock on the shelves, and always seemed to attract shady clientele. I'm unsurprised it's been shut down.

The proprietors were incredibly nice though.

Michelle, which store are you referring to? Antique to Chic?

  • @Peter C, yes, i BELIEVE they (AtC) rent Uhauls now in addition to selling pretty furniture and yummy candles

Missing kitty

My 1 year old gray/black striped tabby cat escaped on Wednesday and I still can’t find him. He is friendly, chipped and has a collar on. He has only been outside once before so may be frightened and hiding. His name is Alex, but probably thinks his name is “Kitty.” Please let me know if you have seen him. Thanks!

Mailbox Regulations?

Does anyone know if there are regulations for mailboxs? Today my husband was approached by our mail lady. She told him that our block has too many stairs and that we are required to have our mailbox mounted to our wrought iron fence instead of our house. Just wondering if anyone has heard of this or anything similar to this. I found some regulations on the usps website but nothing to answer my question. My mailbox is easily accessible, it just located on my front porch up 8 steps.

Will just lead to you losing all of your packages and correspondence till the end of time, and no, the home office will not do anything about it. Just ignore it and continue on with life and if she brings it up again just tell her sweetly that you called USPS to see what the exact requirements were and they told you that you didn't have to do it, but that you understand her concerns and vaguely suggest you might plan to get around to it at some point...and then leave it be.

It's true that if you get on the postal worker's wrong side you may get missing packages, etc. And it is true that USPS doesn't seem to care and usually doesn't do anything about mail problems, unless they get called out about it on the news.

  • Brandon, I am a Certified Arborist ( IL-9079A if you want to look it up) so my opinion is an educated one. Most saplings do not do well in the shade of a mature tree.

Trees in parks are handled differently than trees on the parkways. Case in point, the Park District is not trying to treat the ash trees.

@Betsy Then you understand that the scientific process requires evidence for your assertion that "most saplings do not do well in the shade of a mature tree." First you must define what you mean by the term "well." If well means a tree must grow straight and perfect fit for a British Queen's garden then I would agree. Saplings in the shade must juke and jive to find their place in a canopy. Well by my defiinition is to provide a canopy that shades the street so it doesn't become a radiating heat sink on hot summer days. Your planting method will never provide that kind of canopy and it lacks redundancy.

The vast majority of saplings will survive in the shade of an older tree. The ones that don't are weak and die. So what. Plant another. Nature is survival of the fittest. Imperfections are what makes nature beautiful, not pretty stained mulch surrounding tree trunks and other plants.

The original article in this thread was about the declining tree canopy. The rigid inside the box thinking by yourself and other "experts" is why the canopy will continue to decline. That the park district chopped down all the Ash trees at Holstein Park reminds me when we used to laugh at the lazy IT guy whose solution to every PC problem was to reinstall the OS. That is a solution to every PC problem but may not be the most effective.

Drywall repair and painting - recommendations?

Hi, neighbors! We sustained water damage from the heavy snow and a bad roof over the winter. We're just about done with our roof repairs. (Thanks to all the great recommendations on here, we went with Nyberg Exteriors and have been pleased with their service and professionalism.) Now that the roof is fixed, we need to get the interior drywall on a few ceilings and walls repaired/replaced and painted. Any recommendations from good, honest contractors (who are licensed and bonded)? We haven't been impressed with the ones recommended by our insurance company. Many thanks in advance!

  • HumBo, I am looking for a guy to do some drywall work. In fact I emailed Slobo this morning, sounds like that wont work for me.However, Leo sounds like he could potentially be an option. Just wondering if he has a business website or anything. I like to do some digging around before cold calling. Did he have a business name?

    Thanks

  • MT

Vicente Fernandez did work for us a few times and the drywall quality was great.

Welles Park Dog Park?

Thinking Welles Park needs a dog park or signs can't let your dog off leash and someone to ticket. Every morning on baseball diamonds and today we have a party of 5 dogs off leash with owners chatting. Was hoping to cut through park but will go around.

  • I couldn't agree more Cubs. My dog is always on a leash and I deal with this at Winnemac park regularly. Dogs off leash approach my dog as I'm walking him and if they run up to us, he feels threatened. (His eyesight is not great anymore). I would much prefer there were a fence around the unofficial dog park that's formed there so we all can enjoy the park.

  • The police don't always coordinate with the Park District management. This problem has to be addressed with the park supervisor. If you don't know who that is, go to the Chicago Park District website and look it up or click on CONTACT US on the home page and leave your complaint there.

Horse Radish? Plants or roots?

I just read where you can freeze the root.

Please e-mail (klh@mindspring.com) if interested. Once you plant it, it is yours for a long time..and the leaves are tall and nice ....and you can dig it and leave part of the root in the ground and it will come back.

  • Hi NW...I don't have rabbits by me (feral cats and lots of backyard dogs..) and the leaves actually smell a little like strong horseradish (well, to me..) -they sure are attractive....so wish I could answer. But you are welcome to try it...(unless these plants would deter the rabbits from he other tasty ones.....just a thought...)

  • A site that lists "safe" things to feed captive rabbits included horseradish. Thinking horseradish may require less watering than turnips. Glad you posted and made me hunt-down more info.
No pesticides in decades here; never will. Neighborhood feral cat is too old and slow to actually nab a rabbit ... saw two hawks fail vs bunny last Spring (yay).
