Zoning plans for Tearing Down the Boys & Girls Club. But plans on saving it ? Here are my thoughts about that place. I am very happy to hear about the boys and girls club on Palmer and sawyer getting shutdown. I have been a resident of Logan square for 11 years and that boys and girls club is nothing but trouble and trafficking. The kids are very loud and very very disrespectful and after they get done hanging out at Palmer and sawyer once the boys and girls clubs has shutdown for the night . They walk up and down the alleys spray painting residents garages. Stealing packages off of people’s front porches. I have brought this up to the attention of the main guy that runs that place and all he does is protect bad kids that steal and we don’t need a place like this in our neighborhood. I can assure you that I’m not the only neighbor that feels this way and has had problems or have tried complaining to the boys and girls and nothing ever gets done. In the past there was a co worker that was caught and charged with child porn on his computer inside the Boys & Girls Club And like I said it’s time for the boys & girls clubs to be shutdown for good and I have neighbors to back up my claims.

  • Douglas Raul Williams Family history in Logan Square since 1970

My family has deep roots in Logan Square, even when it was less desirable as now. The Boys and Girls Club was where we spent time playing basketball and other positive activities. If the problem is how youth are acting after they leave the club, that can be addressed by speaking to the director or having a meeting where other residents can attend to discuss the issue. I agree with the post that there are fewer positive places to spend time after school and receive positive mentoring for our youth.

  • The alternative would be unsupervised children running around starting at 3:30 when they get out of school. Most of the Boys & Girls Clubs are 1) underfunded, 2) understaffed, 3) overcrowded due to a lack of inexpensive childcare services from the time school lets out until 5-7pm when most parents...

Do you have time to volunteer a few hours a week? Having an extra adult present in a group of children/teens works wonders.

Should Chicago have a 'congestion charge'?

For those not familiar with the concept:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_congestion_charge

But the basics are you create a zone where drivers must pay a fee to drive in during certain times of day.

According to the wikipedia entry, London did this and it led to a decrease in cars on the road, pollution, speeds, and increased revenues for the city.

    London congestion charge - Wikipedia
The London congestion charge is a fee charged on most motor vehicles operating within the Congestion Charge Zone (CCZ) in Central London between 07:00 and 18:00 Mondays to Fridays. It is not charged on weekends, public holidays or between Christmas Day and New Year's Day (inclusive). The charge was introduced on 17 February 2003.
    https://en.wikipedia.org
  • My point was that we shouldn’t be discouraging people from coming downtown. Many people drive and don’t want to take a train, especially since union station and and Ogilvie aren’t near the museums, navy pier l, etc.

This would be just another reason for people to stay home. Sorry, but Chicago isn’t London or NYC. We need to welcome people, not make it even harder on them.

  • @D_ the L/CTA in general is superior to the tube in nearly all high-congestion times. I know it's fashionable to disparage the CTA, but it is a bright spot of the city's functionings and superior to any other major city I've lived in (Boston, SF, Toronto, NYC). The only place that compares in my experience is DC's Metro, and that bypasses Georgetown altogether due to NIMBYism.

Garage Rooftop Deck

Hello all,
Does anyone have an architect or engineer they’d recommend for drawings? I have a standard 2 car garage (8years old) and would like to add a deck above. I’ve had quotes from $10-30k and would like to save some $ by pulling my own permits. Or if someone has a GC who could handle it all and that is reasonable please message me info.
Thanks!

Replace bathroom ventilation fan/light combo - any recommendations?

I need to replace my bathroom ventilation fan, the motor finally died after a couple of months of not working great but the light still works. Any recommendations on who I can hire to replace this? I'm not sure if the whole unit needs replacement or just the motor/fan part.

  • Marcelino G New 31st Ward Resident

LT45. If you buy one the same size, you can replace it yourself in 15-20 min. Go on youtube and look at videos. A locknut holds it in place and there is a plug for the fan. Pretty straight-forward. Save yourself a few bucks. DIY.

  • Thank you for all the recommendations!

We are looking for recommendations to rebuild our porch. It will be in phases as we need to remove the cement block stairway, replace and repair the facia and the ubiquitous iron wrought rails and columns with something more period correct. Thank you in advance!

How do security deposits work in Chicago? Need to get old one back before starting new lease?

If I am leaving a place, when can I get my security deposit back? I'd like to use my security deposit from my old place (the one i'm in now) and put it towards the security deposit on the new place because I don't have a lot of spare funds sitting around. Is it possible to get the security deposit back before the move out date on the old place in order to make this happen?

And, sort of on the subject, make sure that the security deposit receipt is dated within 5 days of receipt of the money. Due to a wire transfer and lags in posting time, a tenant sued the LL for the 1 day beyond receipt, even though LL had an email showing that on that date, the funds were not deposited yet; But I have to admit he was sort of a pri&%. He complained that during a blizzard, the sidewalk was not shoveled!

honestbleeps, if you are a landlord and are holding security deposits you may want to consult with an attorney who is familiar with housing law and get a legal interpretation.

    Self-interpretation of this many-faceted heavy-handed pro-tenant manifest can be fatal...to your pocketbook.

Some of us have been or have been around landlords trying to maneuver within the CRLTO manifest and it is full of landmines. You are bound to step on one if you get the wrong tenant. The stories I have heard and the cost of $$$$$, time, stress, and other resources on a landlord have pushed some out of the small-time landlord business, has hardened others, and it inevitably changes the status quo. The rational choices available to a landlord post-CRLTO pocket-picking are very slim unless working for free is one's acceptable standard.

"shall not be subject to the claims of any creditor of the landlord or of the landlord’s successors in interest" has been a warranted and beneficial clause. When there is bankruptcy, foreclosure, divorce, etc. it is all very unclear to the tenant what is going on in the life of the landlord. So that security deposit must be protected.

However, to obey the law regarding avoiding commingling funds, walk into a bank, demand to open an interest bearing account as an individual and refuse to provide your social security number. The bank cannot open that account for you. It is Federal law that any interest bearing account be associated with a social security number (or equivalent). Because interest, even 10 cents worth, is subject to income tax. Individual owners have to form an LLC or Corporation (or as Gil wisely pointed out this may not be compliant), or cease to collect security deposits. Again, consult with your attorney.

And on the 6th day, god created the 5 day notice. And the late fee.

Looking for Temporary Workshop Space

We're looking for a small space in which we can do some light carpentry and painting during May, June, July, and most of August. We have liability insurance and can provide references.

  • You should check out the many maker spaces in Chicago. There's usually a small fee, but you get access to storage for your project, and use of community power tools and paint booths. Your projects will probably go much faster. http://www.makersinchicago.org/

Looking for a professional rose expert or a very knowledgeable aficionado

This is my rose "tree," I guess it's called. It is all one plant. It's at least 50 years old and seems to have gotten along well without much intervention. But the canes have grown extremely long and there's a lot of dead trunk at the base. I do not know what it needs in terns of care so I'd like to find a professional horticulturist or a very knowledgeable aficionado to help me help it survive even longer.

Any suggestions?

All I know about a rose is that by any other name, it's still a rose.

  • Could it be a climbing rose? I have been taking care of old rose bushes since I moved into my house 33 yrs ago and found some in the yard. Every year it is necessary to cut back the brown parts to the green parts. Remove any dead pieces at...

Could it be a climbing rose? I have been taking care of old rose bushes since I moved into my house 33 yrs ago and found some in the yard. Every year it is necessary to cut back the brown parts to the green parts. Remove any dead pieces at the bottom. Clear away the debris at the base of the plant and sprinkle some compost. Wait til May to give it a dose of good plant food designed for flowering plants mixed with water. Water at the base only.

Roses are greedy plants. They demand plenty of food, water and sun.

working with her is not without its hazards - the thorns are verrry long and very very sharp - it's like she is saying "Leave me alone! Don't touch me!"

I have a scheduled roofing job! However..

The contractor/ estimator told me no permit would be necessary. I find this hard to believe.

  • I just had my roof replaced. A complete tear off and new roofing. You do not need a permit for a new roof.

  • You only need a Roof permit if you are replacing roof sheathing or adding skylights. No permit needed if just tearing off and replacing roof covering or shingles.

Recommendations - water in the basement

Greetings, neighbors-

During intensive rainy days water seeps into our building's basement. I am hoping to receive reliable/trustworthy recommendations via this channel. Please provide me recommended businesses that offer assessment/repair for this type of situation. It could be gutters/downspouts, pipes, not sure. From the looks of it doesn't seem its a pipe issue. Much appreciated.

Thank you neighbors!

Try these guys, at least get an estimate. Anderson construction and waterproofing.

They fixed my water seepage issues with drain tile and a pump, due to my old stone foundation, cracked drain pipes, and low lying areas that were causing us all kinds of basement water issues. They found the least invasive and reasonable solution for us, and it worked.

  • Carter O'Brien Diversey to Belmont lifer

We also used Permaseal and went the drain tile and new sump pump w/battery back up route. I routinely hear it pumping water hours after the rain has stopped, it has been great for peace of mind.

All you have to do to vote is go to your neighborhood school between 6 AM through 7 PM with an ID confirming your address within the boundary. You'll be given a ballot and allowed to vote for no more than 5 candidates among both parent and community representatives. Voting for more than 5 candidates will spoil your vote!

I have served as a parent representative at Darwin for two years, where my daughter attends. During my tenure I have asked critical questions about the school's operation and the principal's policies because these decision affect the education of all the children in the school - including my daughter's.

I'd like to ask for your suport for another two years. It's a lot to ask people to take 20-30 minutes out of their day and vote in an election that seems removed from their lives but what happens in your local school really matters to the neighborhood: excellent schools that parents want to attend change the neighborhood for the better.

I've been privileged to work with the following other candidates and wholeheartedly endorse voting for them as well.

For Parent Representative: Jeffrey Young (myself), Erin Rensink, Dawn Herrera Helphand

For Community Representative: Kate Carolan and Amanda Mcbee.

Thank you.

Hi Mookie, welcome to Palmer Square! I can suggest a couple of options:
    1) HAPS- If you are living on Palmer Square and own your property, there is a small group called Homeowners of Palmer Square (HAPS). Its bylaws are fairly restrictive, so it limited to owners of property within the 3000-3200 blocks of Palmer. Addresses on Kedzie and Humboldt on Palmer Square itself are also part of the group. I can connect you if this is an interest.
    2) Logan Square Preservation-- this group is the larger Logan Square group that advises on issues in the neighborhood, Palmer Square included. They do have a separate zoning committee.

There may be other groups as well that others will suggest.

  • Thanks Cori! I am a homeowner but do not reside on the square. Maybe I can look into the second option? Thank you!

  • Logan Square Preservation meets at 7pm, the third thursday of every month at the Norwegian Lutheran Minnekirken Church at 2614 N Kedzie, on the square. The April meeting is this thursday night and guests are welcome. Zoning is always a hot topic and new development plans are popping up all over. So if you are free thursday, stop by. Pharmacy on Fullerton next to Farrel's gym

Any idea what the pharmacy is between Farrell's gym on Fullerton at Kedzie, and Fishman's?

It's almost totally bare, never anyone inside. Every time I walk past I wonder how they use such a high traffic space for a faux store front.

  • i wish someone would re-develop that corner, would love to see the one story office & retail buildings along the boulevard get built up to have housing above and hold the corners better. Except for maybe the Parson's building, that one does an job because it's so active and has a nice massing of mature trees assisting

  • they have a website alphacarerx.com for that store but all the images are stock internet photos. it looks like a mail order pharmacy so why the storefront? open 9-5?

Lost keys with library tag

Hi, I lost part of my keychain last weekend either near Sunnyside/California or near California/Diversey. It's just a ring with a black Honda key and a house key on it, with a Chicago Public Library card tag as well. Just thought I'd check and see if anyone picked it up - it was a week ago, but thought it was still worth it to check.

  • Did you check with the library system to see if anyone turned them in...I think if I found them, that is what I would do...

  • Do you have a valid phone number or email address on file with the library. They will usually try to contact you if keys are turned in to them, but sometimes the contact information is outdated.

  • A.S. a.s.

Unfortunately, I already called a few nearby libraries last week when it happened - should've mentioned that. They didn't have anything in the system about it being turned in. Bummer.
