Suspicious Man casing out buildings in Logan square

This man has been seen in front of my house looking at my building from across the street. The 2nd time I seen this man he was standing at the end of my alley and now I Caught for the 3rd time taking a picture of my name tag on my mailbox so I am bringing this up to the attention of Logan square residents. I will post the link of security footage of this man and if you see him please call 14th district police https://youtu.be/h-TaMD7kRGs

  • Thanks for posting Ray. I’m in the area and so glad our neighbors have each other’s backs. I’ll keep an eye out

  • Rosi, per John Oliver's advice I've frozen my credit. It costs like 20 bucks to freeze/unfreeze, but I think its worth it. I've be a victim of pretty much every major data breach in the last few years so I know I am extremely vulnerable otherwise.

Since most people don't need their credit most years its probably more effective to freeze it than watch for something bad then have to try to fix it.

Tightening power lines

Has anyone ever had the power lines that run over their property “tightened”? Some run diagonally across my yard and are saggy - not dangerously so, but they’re an eyesore from our bedroom window and may impact some potential plans for our yard. I’ve read across the internet that some people have gotten the power company to do this for free... seems too good to be true for Chicago. Curious on the process to do this as well as price. Thanks!

  • JSK

Yea, I had another issue and while here ComEd moved them for free because mine were hanging too low.

  • Very helpful. Thanks everyone, I’ll give ComEd a call

Is this your cat?

Hi - walking the dog tonight 2/12 my husband came upon a really friendly grey cat around Drake and Schubert. No collar, both ears intact. I read a post from August with a description of a similar cat. Is this yours?

  • Dhe

Thanks for posting! My heart did jump when I thought it was my cat. I believe someone befriended my cat and took her in.
Please remind people that a tipped ear on a cat means they are spoken for 😀

  • A tipped ear only means it was trapped, spayed/neutered, vaccinated at the time (which may have since expired), likely microchipped and then released. It doesn't indicate if a cat is being cared for. Some may be tame, so it'd be great to help find a forever home.

Need good roofer

I need to find a capable and honest roofer! The majority of my roof is fine, but the roof over my foyer has a leak that I've paid to have fixed twice to no avail. I need an honest roofer who's not going to try to get me to get a whole new roof (which I can't afford right now), but who's also savvy enough to actually figure out this issue!
Anyone have any recommendations?
Thanks-

  • Melissa Stanley local realtor and business onwer

Call Pablo 708-574-2207 he is great and very reasonable. Just remember that water seeks the lowest point so the leak could be coming from another part of the roof. I know for experience that finding a leak is not easy and sometime you just have to re-do the roof. Sorry but it is true.

  • Try Nyberg Exteriors. Great reviews, fixed my vent and didn't try to sell on replacing the entire roof. https://www.yelp.com/biz/nyberg-exteriors-chicago

Sleeping guy on Cortland

Anybody know what the deal is with the sleeping guy on Cortland and Mozart? The cops tell him to move and then he comes back. He is a Hispanic man in his 30s with a large black backpack. He tends to wander around the neighborhood aimlessly and laugh maniacally at things that are not there. I’m also convinced he was in my back yard today. But that’s another story in itself...

  • If you feel obliged to give him your own money, that is up to you. But, I would advise against it. If you are truly concerned about his well being, provided him with food/food gift cards and connect him with the services he needs. Providing a man money, will not only allow him to possibly spend it on items detrimental to himself and our community, but also keep him roaming the area.

  • Agreed..I have a bag I give out with socks, gloves, food, etc and there are quarters & a few dollars in it. The gift card work well.I also pick up the cost for those in dollar stores buying ..usually hygiene products.
We all need to research services but some won't stay in them because they don't feel safe.

I love to try everything available without having to buy an entire drink in order to do so. Would free samples be more ideal for me as a customer? Sure. Would it be viable (if I want to try everything) for the business to do so? Nope. I'll give 'em a go.

Missing white husky - in Bucktown/Wicker Park/Logan Square

Hi, everyone. Earlier tonight, our dog ran out through out front gate. He is a male, all white husky; responds to Yukon and was last wearing a blue harness. He is not chipped. We live by Western and Charleston, but he's a runner by nature so I'm not sure how far he would've gone by now.

I am not sure how this works, but if anyone has any information please send a message. My poor boy is out in the cold alone. I need him to come back home.

Shooting at Cortland and California.

A friend just witnessed two groups of youths shooting at eachother on the corner. Wow haven’t seen that in this area for a long time. He didn’t see if anyone was hit. Hopefully not!

  • Hopefully Wilmot Realty will make an offer on the liquor store and barbershop that they can't refuse (bangers have to get there fade somewhere ) . They seem to be developing every other corner in the area.

  • Waiting for someone to blame gentrification or the "outsider investment" Maldonado & Company discourage on this shooting.

It's time for a twenty year plan for Humboldt Park's growth and development that doesn't include Maldonado, his real estate front groups, or the gang banger class that thinks it should be 1970 forever.

It's pretty easy: remove the cancer of Maldonado & Company, then the gangs follow.

Like anything else, the best Chinese/pizza/etc. is a mattter of taste. Especially pizza...if you want to start an argument, ask who has the best pizza. Thin vs pan vs stuffed vs NY style adds another element.

Crime

Neighbors, I have lived around California and Milwaukee for 5 years...I have 2 kids, I know the crime in this area, but we are close to police station, so I tend to not worry too much. We were beginning to look at moving a little further west, more affordable. Does anyone know about crime closer to Milwaukee and Central Park? I know that’s getting into Avondale, but it’s also so close to Logan, so I thought it would be worth asking. From my observations, it is certainly very urban in that area, but seems family friendly enough. Anything I should know? Appreciate the feedback...Thanks so much!

Laine, when you see the anti-gentri protesters marching and shouting with their knickers in a twist like you do in Logan, Humboldt Park and Avondale (which is the area you are asking about), it is a prognostication that it is probably a really good time to invest. Price-wise it is too late in some areas but you can probably still find some deals in HP or Avondale. Don't know much about Pilsen but gentrification ALWAYS follows a period, usually a prolonged period, of broad community disinvestment. Investment and rejuvenation is occurring block by block in these communities. When looking at an area just check in the alley. If there are a lot of people who don't know how to put their trash in the city provided and weekly serviced containers you know that block is a bit slower to get better. People who don't know how to dispose of their trash are typically ignorant and it is an indicator of other potentially problematic behavior that you would have to accept or deal with should you move in near them. You often see lids missing or large rat holes chewed in the cans. When you see a relatively neat and clean alley and gleaming blue carts full of recycling you know that block is faring well. Also if there are a lot of empty storefronts then it is proof that the community that used to be there to support those small businesses are no longer there, and new residents bring renewed interest in business development. Logan = lots of active storefronts. HP = lots of empty storefronts. Check with your Realtor and you will see where the opportunities are in your price range.

On Tuesday, January 15, Duffy, woke up unable to walk and in horrible pain. We rushed him to the vet who sent him to a specialist immediately. The specialist ordered an MRI which revealed one ruptured disc and two compromised discs. Because Duffy is still young and has so much heart and love in him, putting him down is not an option. He’s a dearly beloved member of the family. He was rushed into surgery that night.

Now we are drowning in medical bills of over $8,000. He will be re-learning to walk for the next few weeks and will require therapeutic rehab, which will add to the bills. So we are hoping there are some dog lovers out there who will contribute to our fund-raising efforts and help Duffy heal. I know so many people are trying to raise money these days and people have to make choices. But every little bit helps, so If you are able to contribute, thank you.

Hi! I am looking for recommendations for the repair of a basic buzzer / intercom system in a 6-unit condo building. I have tried everyone from a previous post that I found on this site from a few years back and can't get anyone to call back or show up for an appointment. We are not looking for a new system, but just a way for UPS to be able to ring the doorbell and be buzzed in. US Mail Must go Though.

The Mail must go through, that is if they feel like it these days- Often on my block in Logan Square we are skipped a day once a week or so. and when the weather is bad- you can count on missed days, no mail service for us Friday and Saturday this past week.

  • WilliamB. I have signed up for that service. It works occasionally. But if they don't scan the mail for days and finally a few days later you have ten pieces of mail, then they are not scanning it daily. Also with packages they say that delivery is tomorrow and I never see it. I also live in the rear of the building and too lazy to deliver it to the side. My zip is 60642.

Anyone know anyone who works at Cozy Corner @ Milwaukee and California? I almost broke my leg today on their (as always) unshoveled sidewalk. I've lived here 18 years and never once has it been shoveled. Calling 311 is about as useful as it is with anything else... Perhaps a friendly word would do more than the $1k/day fine that they've obviously never been levied.

  • "Cozy Corner is a big time supporter of Alderman Proco Joe Moreno. Maybe calls to his office may get results. Then maybe not. He could care less."

They gotta donate that $$$ so they can get that high rise upzoning! A proven winning formula.

My favorite aunt lost her battle with cancer almost a year ago. She didn't have much but she gave everything. She took in strays and always brought dog and cat food to local shelters. She became a vegetarian because she loved animals. She left two cats behind that my sister is taking care of, one of which has feline leukemia. My aunt found the cat when it was still a kitten and didn't have the heart to turn it away after finding out it had leukemia. The other cat is older and not well so I think my sister and I have to talk about next steps for that cat. But now the question is what to do with the younger one with leukemia.

I share the love of animals and have a combination of 6 Dogs and cats having varying forms of issues and taking in a cat with leukemia isn't going to work. My sister has an older cat of her own that we don't want to expose to the cat with leukemia. It kills me to think there are no options for a cat with leukemia.

So I'm reaching out to see if there's anyone out there who has a cat with leukemia who wants a mate for their cat or knows of any shelters who will take this cat in to rehome her.

Please share any ideas.

  • Praying for a resolution for the cat.

  • Best wishes for a happy resolution and home for your inherited feline with leukemia.

Friends of ours once kept their cat with feline leukemia in a separate floor of their home from all their other pets. I think that works fine for cats that aren't extremely social. We currently keep separate floors of pets for other reasons - age & attitude. Keeps the peace.

Logan Square Area Neighborhood Groups?

Crain's 2-8-2018 Article on Palmer Square and Homewood

I did not realize that Palmer Square is considered to encompass Kedzie to Milwaukee, Fullerton to Armitage. Anyone else surprised that is continues east of California or even east of Humboldt? When did this happen?

I would include Kedzie to Kimball. Fullerton to Armitage as this area was platted with all deep lots as there are only 2 streets, Sawyer and Spaulding, where the rest of the north side has 3 streets, adding Christiana.

An 1880 Map of the Logan - Bucktown area does show an east-west street called Asylum Place. On the east it ended at "Elston Rd" and on the west at "Henshaw", which is now Leavitt. Asylum Place is now Webster Ave. Did St. Hedwig Church have an asylum?

The same map has "Palmer Place" where is now Palmer Square Park. Continuing East of Humboldt Blvd, the north street running east-west was "Schleswig St." (now Palmer St.) and the south street was "Apenrade St. (now Shakespeare). Both these streets ended at what is now California.

Good Morning People,
Is this a decent carrier? I have Verizon and am happy with everything but the price. I havent heard much about Boost but a friend in the 'burbs told me she pays less than $50.00 a month, That sounds appealing but what's the catch.
Thanks in advance.

Block Club Chicago - Filling the DNAinfo-sized Holes in our Hearts?

Just heard about this Kickstarter and wanted to share the news: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/544623986/bringing-neighborhood-news-back-by-block-club-chic?ref=user_menu

I know a lot of us miss DNAinfo, so I was super excited to see some familiar faces and names. We all have a stake in hyperlocal news and information sharing, so this seems like it'll be a great community resource when it's launched in April :)

Neighbor feeding pigeons....

Our next door neighbor feeds pigeons in his backyard. He is older and on disability, and I get it, they are like his friends. But it creates swarms of pigeons that poop all over the place. And it seems like the rat problem has gotten worse. My husband really, really hates that he feeds them, and he has had several (probably 10?) conversations with him telling him he has to stop or he will report the neighbor. The neighbor then...

The neighbor then will feed them in the dog run between his house and his other neighbor, like hiding it from my husband. But the 50 pigeons are a dead giveaway its still happening. Now the pigeons have started nesting on OUR deck, so it's hit a new low, and my husband is about to lose his mind. He doesn't really want to report him because he is old and clearly on a low fixed income. He doesn't want to financially ruin this guy. But this has to stop. Does anyone have any advice on what to do? We have called the police to see what would happen, if anything, if we reported him, and they always have differing opinions on what the law is. It varies from $250 fines to nothing because they don't *think* it's illegal.

Aldona: Love that video. Interesting how his pigeons are so varied in color . . . white, beige, brown, and the more common dark blue. Haven't seen any that varied here in Chicago.

Oh, let him be. There are worse things than feeding pigeons - they
    are interesting and intelligent birds.

Cost Per Laundry Load (HOAs)

Greetings, Neighbors-

Calling on neighbors part of HOAs, and where laundry is in the building and not in the unit(s). What is the standard cost per load? What is the standard? An increase from .50 cents to $1.25 per load reasonable? Thank you in advance for your input.

I'm not trying to be snarky but I don't think it matters what anybody thinks about cost increase. Are you renting a condo there, an owner or are you on the BOD? In our building, decisions like these are made by our BOD w/out input from the rest of the HOA (this would be considered a very minor decision for our building). If you are a renter, perhaps you can ask your landlord if there's anything that can be done to offset the cost. If you are an owner and I was the treasurer and was asked to justify the cost increase with the "supporting work" a responder mentioned I would invite them to the nearest laundromat and suggest they run for treasurer at the next BOD election.

For the record, $0.50 seems incredibly cheap and $1.25/load less than average and completely reasonable.

  • If this is a building of owners that are already paying monthly HOA fees then the laundry should be part of that cost. You should not be charging anything for each load.

If you're managing a building of rental units then charge whatever you want.
