Lost my keys at the 606 Trail

My husband lost his keys at the 606 trail. Anyone with any information of a set of keys found please let me know. Thank you for your time.

  • I saw someone hung a set of keys in on a fence in front of 1925 mozart. The set had a red metal clasp on it.

Shooting at Cortland and California.

A friend just witnessed two groups of youths shooting at eachother on the corner. Wow haven’t seen that in this area for a long time. He didn’t see if anyone was hit. Hopefully not!

  • The tie shop has helped me for years when I had my old car...and I never see any one hanging out. The 'trouble' I have seen is closer to Humboldt and Cortland...
If this is all gang related, they could move across the blvd by me...I'm just always surprised when a 'history' goes on for years before it can be corrected...

    Thanks for posting..

  • Hopefully Wilmot Realty will make an offer on the liquor store and barbershop that they can't refuse (bangers have to get there fade somewhere ) . They seem to be developing every other corner in the area.

Sleeping guy on Cortland

Anybody know what the deal is with the sleeping guy on Cortland and Mozart? The cops tell him to move and then he comes back. He is a Hispanic man in his 30s with a large black backpack. He tends to wander around the neighborhood aimlessly and laugh maniacally at things that are not there. I’m also convinced he was in my back yard today. But that’s another story in itself...

@Mass, you might have been pooh-bombed in your backyard. All it takes is a minute for these guys to present you with a real gem. Take a survey of your property before we get additional snow or rain and look for what you wish were dog turds. Look especially against your garage, tree trunks and fencelines as they often push their back against something and pop a squat and release. We had a problem with a few roving homeless dudes that absolutely refused formal assistance and they used to sneak in anywhere to drop a deuce, oftentimes immediately following a shoot-up with heroin. All of that debris was left for the homeowners to clean up. Not nice no matter how sympathetic you are to the plight of homelessness. Eventually we had several vacant buildings torn down and that thinned out the zombies.

Early last year one of my neighbors confronted a homeless dude that was squatting against a garage in the alley with his pants down. The dude had a dirty heroin needle hidden behind his back and took a swipe at my neighbor, who fortunately was not harmed. Cops came, charges were filed, court attended, and the pooh musketeer did a month and a half behind bars for aggravated assault. Hope he got clean. I hope he also got re-acquainted with proper etiquette and use of a toilet. My neighbor was legally armed and would have been justified with self-defense but managed the situation differently.

Secure your property or be ready for the swarms of feasting flies that will clean up the mess for you come Spring.

  • So where do you suggest that these guys have a poo?

Man Yelling at bystanders and cars

Yesterday my Girlfriend and I were walking down armitage, a tall approximate 6' 2" athletic build, short hair, black male started yelling at across the street swearing and yelling at us for no particular reason. We ignored it and kept walking then heard him yelling at cars, it looked like he was trying to pick a fight. I've seen this guy around Logan and Humboldt, more so in the summer. We assume he has some mental health issues but concerned with the threat of physical violence. Anyone seen this guy around or know his deal, would be great not to get harassed by the crazy's walking around the neighborhood.

Good Chinese food delivery in Logan?

Hi Logan neighbors! My fiancee and I moved from Brooklyn to Chicago a few months ago, and we've had a really hard time finding any decent Chinese food delivery here. We've tried a few places on Caviar and Grubhub, but all have been pretty bad so far. Do you have any recommendations of places to go / order from?

Thank you!

  • Dee's in LP on Armitage. Use GrubHub/DoorDash and don't feel limited by what's in your immediate surroundings. Chengdu Impression also good for szechuan.

Not in the neighborhood, but Takie Outit on Chicago between Leavitt and Hoyne in Ukrainian Village is my favorite. Maybe Grubhub will deliver from there. I miss it since I've moved.

Like anything else, the best Chinese/pizza/etc. is a mattter of taste. Especially pizza...if you want to start an argument, ask who has the best pizza. Thin vs pan vs stuffed vs NY style adds another element.

Increased gang activity in East Humboldt Park -- Albany & Wabansia

I moved to my current apartment on the corner of Albany and Wabansia 2 years ago.
I have noticed a huge increase in gang activity in this area. Gangs are tagging buildings in greater numbers. Three cars were broken into over the last 3 months. I hear a number of gunshots many nights out of the week. There was a murder in front of the apartment building on Albany and Wabansia about a year ago. Does anyone know what is going on? Is this your cat?

Hi - walking the dog tonight 2/12 my husband came upon a really friendly grey cat around Drake and Schubert. No collar, both ears intact. I read a post from August with a description of a similar cat. Is this yours?

  • Hatie - Thanks for the tip. I looked and it is not the same cat

Colin - you are probably right, but I am concerned that I have never seen this cat before and we walk our dog the same route daily. I will keep an eye on it for now.

  • Just went out with some food to check for the kitty. She didn't eat, but she's very, very in heat. I have a feeling the owners threw her out for a few days to get this blow over because cats in heat can get get annoying after 5 minutes.

But also not sure she's someone's cat, as one in heat will be friends with anyone.

Crime

Neighbors, I have lived around California and Milwaukee for 5 years...I have 2 kids, I know the crime in this area, but we are close to police station, so I tend to not worry too much. We were beginning to look at moving a little further west, more affordable. Does anyone know about crime closer to Milwaukee and Central Park? I know that’s getting into Avondale, but it’s also so close to Logan, so I thought it would be worth asking. From my observations, it is certainly very urban in that area, but seems family friendly enough. Anything I should know? Appreciate the feedback...Thanks so much!

Laine, when you see the anti-gentri protesters marching and shouting with their knickers in a twist like you do in Logan, Humboldt Park and Avondale (which is the area you are asking about), it is a prognostication that it is probably a really good time to invest. Price-wise it is too late in some areas but you can probably still find some deals in HP or Avondale. Don't know much about Pilsen but gentrification ALWAYS follows a period, usually a prolonged period, of broad community disinvestment. Investment and rejuvenation is occurring block by block in these communities. When looking at an area just check in the alley. If there are a lot of people who don't know how to put their trash in the city provided and weekly serviced containers you know that block is a bit slower to get better. People who don't know how to dispose of their trash are typically ignorant and it is an indicator of other potentially problematic behavior that you would have to accept or deal with should you move in near them. You often see lids missing or large rat holes chewed in the cans. When you see a relatively neat and clean alley and gleaming blue carts full of recycling you know that block is faring well. Also if there are a lot of empty storefronts then it is proof that the community that used to be there to support those small businesses are no longer there, and new residents bring renewed interest in business development. Logan = lots of active storefronts. HP = lots of empty storefronts. Check with your Realtor and you will see where the opportunities are in your price range.

On Tuesday, January 15, Duffy, woke up unable to walk and in horrible pain. We rushed him to the vet who sent him to a specialist immediately. The specialist ordered an MRI which revealed one ruptured disc and two compromised discs. Because Duffy is still young and has so much heart and love in him, putting him down is not an option. He’s a dearly beloved member of the family. He was rushed into surgery that night.

Now we are drowning in medical bills of over $8,000. He will be re-learning to walk for the next few weeks and will require therapeutic rehab, which will add to the bills. So we are hoping there are some dog lovers out there who will contribute to our fund-raising efforts and help Duffy heal. I know so many people are trying to raise money these days and people have to make choices. But every little bit helps, so If you are able to contribute, thank you.

Sometimes people get loaded up with so many toxic drugs it's more harmful than the condition. Thanks for the site link. We're all about home remedies.

Hi! I am looking for recommendations for the repair of a basic buzzer / intercom system in a 6-unit condo building. I have tried everyone from a previous post that I found on this site from a few years back and can't get anyone to call back or show up for an appointment. We are not looking for a new system, but just a way for UPS to be able to ring the doorbell and be buzzed in. I tried one of those wireless stick on doorbells but it lasted all of a few weeks before it stopped working and it wouldn't make sense to plaster six of those all over the gate. Any recommendations for an experienced intercom repair person would be greatly appreciated.

US Mail Must go Though.

The Mail must go through, that is if they feel like it these days- Often on my block in Logan Square we are skipped a day once a week or so. and when the weather is bad- you can count on missed days, no mail service for us Friday and Saturday this past week.

  • WilliamB. I have signed up for that service. It works occasionally. But if they don't scan the mail for days and finally a few days later you have ten pieces of mail, then they are not scanning it daily. Also with packages they say that delivery is tomorrow and I never see it. I also live in the rear of the building and too lazy to deliver it to the side. My zip is 60642.

Cozy Corner sidewalk

Anyone know anyone who works at Cozy Corner @ Milwaukee and California? I almost broke my leg today on their (as always) unshoveled sidewalk. I've lived here 18 years and never once has it been shoveled. Calling 311 is about as useful as it is with anything else... Perhaps a friendly word would do more than the $1k/day fine that they've obviously never been levied.

  • "Cozy Corner is a big time supporter of Alderman Proco Joe Moreno. Maybe calls to his office may get results. Then maybe not. He could care less."

They gotta donate that $$$ so they can get that high rise upzoning! A proven winning formula.

  • Kathy on Crystal Thirty year resident. Real Estate specialist.

Hey Brad, didn't you notice Peter at Cozy Corner took care of the problem. His business has been a pillar of the community for more than forty years. Give him break.

My favorite aunt lost her battle with cancer almost a year ago. She didn't have much but she gave everything. She took in strays and always brought dog and cat food to local shelters. She became a vegetarian because she loved animals. She left two cats behind that my sister is taking care of, one of which has feline leukemia. My aunt found the cat when it was still a kitten and didn't have the heart to turn it away after finding out it had leukemia. The other cat is older and not well so I think my sister and I have to talk about next steps for that cat. But now the question is what to do with the younger one with leukemia.

I share the love of animals and have a combination of 6 Dogs and cats having varying forms of issues and taking in a cat with leukemia isn't going to work. My sister has an older cat of her own that we don't want to expose to the cat with leukemia. It kills me to think there are no options for a cat with leukemia.

So I'm reaching out to see if there's anyone out there who has a cat with leukemia who wants a mate for their cat or knows of any shelters who will take this cat in to rehome her.

Please share any ideas.

  • Praying for a resolution for the cat.

  • Best wishes for a happy resolution and home for your inherited feline with leukemia.

Friends of ours once kept their cat with feline leukemia in a separate floor of their home from all their other pets. I think that works fine for cats that aren't extremely social. We currently keep separate floors of pets for other reasons - age & attitude. Keeps the peace.

Logan Square Area Neighborhood Groups?

Does anyone have information of neighborhood groups within the Logan, Humboldt, "West Bucktown" area?

You could've been on video at an event in China, but if the person who was using your car at the time of the violation, it's your responsibility. As far as receiving a ticket on your vehicle, that is perhaps one letter or number off, the plate may not register to you, but that doesn't mean that the plate does not exist. My husband really, really hates that he feeds them, and he has had several (probably 10?) conversations with him telling him he has to stop or he will report the neighbor. The neighbor then will feed them in the dog run between his house and his other neighbor, like hiding it from my husband. But the 50 pigeons are a dead giveaway its still happening. Now the pigeons have started nesting on OUR deck, so it's hit a new low, and my husband is about to lose his mind. He doesn't really want to report him because he is old and clearly on a low fixed income. He doesn't want to financially ruin this guy. But this has to stop. Does anyone have any advice on what to do? We have called the police to see what would happen, if anything, if we reported him, and they always have differing opinions on what the law is. It varies from $250 fines to nothing because they don't *think* it's illegal.

I'm not trying to be snarky but I don't think it matters what anybody thinks about cost increase. Are you renting a condo there, an owner or are you on the BOD? In our building, decisions like these are made by our BOD w/out input from the rest of the HOA (this would be considered a very minor decision for our building). If you are a renter, perhaps you can ask your landlord if there's anything that can be done to offset the cost. If you are an owner and I was the treasurer and was asked to justify the cost increase with the "supporting work" a responder mentioned I would invite them to the nearest laundromat and suggest they run for treasurer at the next BOD election.

For the record, $0.50 seems incredibly cheap and $1.25/load less than average and completely reasonable.

  • If this is a building of owners that are already paying monthly HOA fees then the laundry should be part of that cost. You should not be charging anything for each load.

If you're managing a building of rental units then charge whatever you want.

Snowblower repair

Hello all,

We're looking for a reliable person or business that could repair our relatively new (2015) Briggs & Stratton that just won't start. We are continuing to work on it but I figured I would ask around just in case. I know that if we let this go, we'll get hit with a blizzard (followed by ruined backs from shoveling...) If nothing else, we can then do what we should have done all year, which is start it and run it every month to keep clean fuel going through the lines....

Any thoughts welcome,

Jeff

  • This is a very easy repair. Unscrew the jet from the carburetor bowl. There are two holes at the bottom and one near the top. Take a small wire and clean out the debris

  • This is why we don't own a snowblower. You have to find a space to store it all year and then when it actually snows enough where a snowblower comes in handy it won't start.

Snow Shoveling

Does anyone have (or know) of a kid or teenager that wants to come shovel my walk today? Willing to pay $20.

I remember going door to door as a kid. Could really use this right now!

West Bucktown Neighborhood Association

Does anyone know if this group is still active? Is anyone a member?

Relatively new to the neighborhood and would like to get involved but their website/events don't appear to be updated and have had trouble getting in touch with them via email

  • The contact email info@westbucktown.org should work, if nothing else you can get on the mailing list. It’s true they use FB mostly. There are a lot of annual events through the year, the bigger summer ones have signs posted at Lucy Flower Park and Maplewood Park.

  • @ Matt W - appreciate the information. I have tried that email, but no luck. Will give it another try. Looking forward to some of these future events

Appliance Repair

Hello Neighbors - I'm looking for an honest and reliable company or repair person to fix some household appliances (refrigerator ice-maker and leaky washing machine). I appreciate all recommendations. The last folks I used seem to include a lot of extra charges. Thanks!

  • KPG Logan Square resident since 1987

I just used Grey's appliance repair a few weeks ago. Mario was prompt, courteous and did a great job fixing the clothes washer. 847-262-1070

Carjacking yesterday 1/25/18

Not in the news yet... in the alley between Armitage and Cortland, just off Drake, my neighbor was carjacked by gunpoint yesterday by three males around noon. Apparently, they beat him up pretty badly. The detective said to always back into your garage, keep the doors locked and keep in drive until the door is down. Keep an eye out when pulling into your alley. If you see something suspicious, keep driving. They are targeting people in garages. So freaked out!!! Stay safe out there!

  • Tres Former resident of 926 W. Oakdale Ave.

Makes me sick for your neighbor! I hope he/she has a speedy recovery physically and mentally! Thank you for the garage tips--they're excellent.

Good job by jrjr for the heads up, and tip as far as backing into the garage. I would add that it's not a bad idea to go around the block twice before parking. If you see the same guy, or guys hanging around for more then a few minutes, it may not be a bad idea to call 911. As far as Stop and Frisk, humboldtwriter is correct. The key isn't just stop and frisk. Their court system backs up the arresting officers in that upon conviction, there is mandatory jail time. Jail time is the key. Most convicted gun toters are repeat offenders, and or career criminals, and or gang members. Years ago, carrying a gun was only a misdemeanor. That meant a slap on the wrist for most offenders, so why not continue carrying guns. The odds are on your side that you won't get caught. Murders were in the eight and nine hundreds then. As soon as legislators did the right thing and made carrying a gun illegally, a felony, the crime rate improved. Now if we can get legislators to make jail mandatory upon conviction, the crime rate will tumble further.

Basketball Open Gym

Desperately seeking an open gym in the Logan area during the week (or on weekends). Need a reason to get off my couch. Any ideas?

  • The X-Sport on Logan Blvd and Elston has some intense pick-up games, depending on your skill level. It's a cheap membership - I think $10 / month. Last time I tried to play there though there were dudes from the Bulls d-league team throwing down windmill dunks in games, so buyer beware. The competition is no joke.

  • There is a gym at the fieldhouse at Koz Park as well that has open gym - I don’t know times though. Check out hoopslink on Twitter too - the guy that runs it does a great job.

Explosion in Logan?

Did anyone else hear the loud explosion at about 7PM last night (Jan 29th)? It shook my building near Mozart and Armitage and people 6 or 7 blocks away said the same thing. Any clue as to what it was?

    A former grocery store becomes a couple's live-work home
It took Matt Nardella and Laura Cripe, co-founders of Moss Design in Chicago, two years to find the right building for the home and office they envisioned. They discovered it in what many would consider an unlikely spot-a defunct grocery store in Logan Square.

'Priceless' Polish folk outfits stolen in Wicker Park smash-and-grab
After five handmade Polish folk outfits were stolen from her car in a smash-and-grab over the weekend, a Wicker Park woman spent most of Christmas rifling through dumpsters in search of the garments. "It was such a beautiful day, Christmas, and for someone to steal something that represents your culture, your heritage and your family, it's just so sad," Marlena Dzis said.

  • People will steal anything. I bought a plastic rainspout deflector to keep the water from flowing into my garage. It was in the alley, didn't think to glue it down. Gone the next day.
