We are a small import company who would like to expand into distribution. All we need is space in a certified warehouse. We don't need much space as we are a small company and this is mostly just for licensing purposes.

Play music in front of my house, I’ll glafly give you my address and we can talk over our indifferences. But I don’t see anyone complaining about the music other than the ones who recently moved into an area because of the cheap living and not researching before moving in.

Javy, still waiting for you to tell me about all the law breakers on the island. As for you not hearing the loud music, I don't care. Playing amplified music without a permit is an issue! If you read all the different posts from different people complaining about the same loud music, this is not just in my head. Your right I am upset that Riot Fest was kicked out of Humboldt park. You posted "The park is for everyone. If they wanna play music, so be it", well that obviously does not ring true. Why was Riot Fest kicked out when they obeyed the law and nothing happens to these law breakers doing the same thing every weekend? Seems like a double standard to me and a way to make law abiding new comers feel unwelcome. I would never be as ignorant as to go to your home and disturb your peace with my loud music. If you want to talk, can't miss my grey stone on the corner of Division and Kedzie, I am usually on my back porch enjoying the peace and quiet when I can get it.

Logan Square's New Boutique Hotel Will Incorporate Vintage Grace's Furniture Sign
LOGAN SQUARE - Plans to convert the Grace's Furniture building into a boutique hotel are moving forward. Not only did scaffolding recently go up, but also the developers and local leaders, including Ald. Carlos Ramirez-Rosa (35th), intend to host a community meeting on the project in early June, according to a flier that has not been made public yet that includes a final rendering.

  • Would be very excited about this if done right.

It's not too big, it would support the bars and restaurants already here and hopefully draw in more retail.

Such a great location right between O'hare and the Loop

Found Dog on Kimball and Dickens

I found a jack russell terrier shivering in the corner of a doorway this morning around 8AM. He was scared and shivering. Was clean and had good teeth and grooming. Definitely a young dog. And he is not microchipped.

Please contact me if you’ve lost your dog with details and proof of ownership.

The catalpa trees on Logan and Humboldt blvds. are looking pretty scraggly these days with more and more dead branches. Catalpas make up a significant proportion of mature trees on these gateway roads in the community. What planning should/could be done to maintain them as long as possible and what should replace them when their lifespan is done?

  • We have a mature catalpa tree in our parkway. I'd love to hear sine tips on what we can do to improve its health. It always gets some kind of mildew or something on the leaves late in the season. We mulched around the tree and I bought some tree fertilizer stakes that I thought I might put down around the drip line.

Recs for Repair to Old (ca. 1890s) Metal-Clad Turret Window?

Hi all:

Our house has an old turret-like corner bay window, dating, as best as we can tell, from approximately the 1890s. It is clad in a kind of metal sheeting, which has been successively painted over the years. A part of the structure was damaged over the winter by ice, and I'm looking for someone who has some experience with vintage ornamental structures like this to come out and assess what we need to do to fix it.

If anyone has any recommendations, please share! Much appreciated.

Thanks.

New Taco Bell in Logan Square (Coming Soon)

They do have a building permit, so it is real. Work has just begun on the next Taco Bell (No Drive thru) Right next door to the Logan Square Hand Car Wash at Milwaukee and Richmond.

How do you feel about this?

Instead of another one of those coming in...Taco Bell chose to gut renovate a building and make a nicer version of their standard restaurants. You can think of this as a sports bar that happens to serve Taco Bell (many people's dream growing up). Either way...if a fast-food joint is coming one way or another, why wouldn't we be happy about how nicely they are doing this up?

Given it is the same ownership as Wicker Park, I'm pretty confident that this will "fit in" with the surrounding area vs becoming some sort of frat boy Disney world which is what it feels like many people fear.

As many above have said...open, contributing storefronts beat empty buildings any day. No one confuses Taco Bell with real Mexican food.

  • Get on board with corporate and management ASAP and get a community agreement in place that they will have trash cans outside near the sidewalk and that they will maintain their trash cans. Including that they will pick up trash in front of their place.

Drywall repair and painting - recommendations?

Hi, neighbors! We sustained water damage from the heavy snow and a bad roof over the winter. We're just about done with our roof repairs. (Thanks to all the great recommendations on here, we went with Nyberg Exteriors and have been pleased with their service and professionalism.) Now that the roof is fixed, we need to get the interior drywall on a few ceilings and walls repaired/replaced and painted. Any recommendations from good, honest contractors (who are licensed and bonded)? We haven't been impressed with the ones recommended by our insurance company. Many thanks in advance!

  • HumBo, I am looking for a guy to do some drywall work. In fact I emailed Slobo this morning, sounds like that wont work for me.However, Leo sounds like he could potentially be an option. Just wondering if he has a business website or anything. I like to do some digging around before cold calling. Did he have a business name?

    Thanks

  • MT

Vicente Fernandez did work for us a few times and the drywall quality was great.

When I moved into Humboldt Park, my block had two apartment buildings and a building that had a few stores in it. There were six vacant lots to the North and then the building containing the stores was leveled bringing the total of vacant lots to seven out of nine lots. The neighborhood was crime ridden and gang violence was a daily occurrence. Neighbors got together and started a community garden on several of the lots to clean up the neighborhood. Gang bangers could no longer use the lots for their criminal actively. Shortly after, developers started purchasing the lots. I am happy to announce that all the vacant lots are gone and tended to as of this month. One developer purchased two lots and built single family homes on them and great people moved in. Now, another developer has purchased the last four lots and built two more single family homes. One home sold for 619K with a great new family. The other was up for sale for 1.2 MILLION until the developer moved his family into it. The last two lots along side of the developers home is now being landscaped as a beautiful addition to his home. After the neighborhood was flooded with low income projects, it is great to see single family homes being built with home ownership because that is what truly stabilizes a community. I am so happy to be apart of bringing back life to Humboldt Park and welcome all new comers that want to make the 720 acres of the park family friendly again.

"do you speak english -- thank god." same EXACT script. her mother's in northwestern, card is over-extended, blah blah blah. i guess word got around that it worked, so the scammers are working it. so adjust your need to respond (if any) accordingly. Que Lastima. 37 years. Wonder what's gonna replace it. Another "upscale" restaurant, or pricey cocktail bar?

  • "Acevedo owns the building, and she’s looking to either rent out the space to a new tenant, or sell the building altogether."

Well at least it isn't a greedy landlord. Assuming she's not mortgaged to hell on it she's probably going to be ok.

  • Or will this in fact make her the greedy landlord now? Of course, she won’t be seeking to maximize rent. I’m sure she’ll rent to a non profit for below market rates.

This past fall, Humboldt Park Branch of the Chicago Public Library launched a weekend chess program intended to draw players at all levels. Inspired by the success of the Lozano branch program run by Héctor Hernández since 1989, the new Humboldt Park program was started by library staffer Jesus Cabrera and so far has drawn a seven year-old child who "played phenomenally well," a 76-year old man, and two high school girls, amongst others.

Horse Radish? Plants or roots?

I just read where you can freeze the root.

Please e-mail (klh@mindspring.com) if interested. Once you plant it, it is yours for a long time..and the leaves are tall and nice ....and you can dig it and leave part of the root in the ground and it will come back.

  • Hi NW...I don't have rabbits by me (feral cats and lots of backyard dogs..) and the leaves actually smell a little like strong horseradish (well, to me..) -they sure are attractive....so wish I could answer. But you are welcome to try it...(unless these plants would deter the rabbits from he other tasty ones.....just a thought...)

  • A site that lists "safe" things to feed captive rabbits included horseradish. Thinking horseradish may require less watering than turnips. Glad you posted and made me hunt-down more info.
No pesticides in decades here; never will. Neighborhood feral cat is too old and slow to actually nab a rabbit ... saw two hawks fail vs bunny last Spring (yay).

    Please contact Michael..he seems perfect!

  • k_alt Northcenter

One of my friends was able to bring her turtle to the Garfield Park Conservatory to live the rest of it's life with other turtles among the plants. Might be worth contacting them or other conservatories in the area to see if they would take another one. If you do choose to adopt it out to someone please make sure it's someone who knows what they are doing and will care for it well. Sometimes it's hard to tell through the internet if that's going to be the case.

Usually Sunday afternoon Humboldt Park is impossible to use for children, families and park visitors without being disturbed or feeling threatened. But yesterday afternoon and evening there were no aggressors disturbing or attacking park visitors at all. It was warm and pleasant weather but no aggressors showed up. It would be expected that some aggressors would drive to Humbolt Park to meet, drink beer, do drugs and to make the usual Sunday mayhem but for some reason they all stayed home. How can this be possible? Why did nobody show up?

Well, this has happened before. The aggressors are either there or they are not.

The reason to this either / or presence is that the aggressive activity is coordinated by organizers. Participants are called for to show up in Humboldt park and make a mayhem and behave threatening. To provoke. To make Humboldt Park unpleasant for other groups. Other ethnic groups. Other cultural groups. Other racial groups.

The loud and aggressive group meeting in Humboldt Park is organized racial hate and must be legally treated as politically organized racial hate. The organizers calling for the participants and the participants must be identified and held legally responsible for organized hate crimes.

Please, call the police, 911 for any racially, culturally and ethnically motivated crime. Make a video and send with text 274637 (CRIMES).

Javy, you spewed a lot of garbage, where should I start. I NEVER posted I would live on the island. If you knew anything about investing, when the island becomes a state next year, bankruptcy will follow and like Detroit, re-birth and investment will restart. From what I have seen on the news, people blasting music 24/7 is extremely unlikely. Last, NO!! "As far as shootings go, this is Chicago, drugs and all that is everywhere in the city." The shootings that have returned to HP are NOT happening in most North Side neighborhoods. When Riot Fest was here crime was way down, the community had hope and businesses with jobs were opening, life was returning. It was killed by our Alderman. I moved into a neighborhood where crime was disappearing and it is unacceptable to think a crime ridden community must stay a crime ridden community. "Puerto Rican’s love our music and embrace our heritage", great so do I, now just follow the laws while doing so like all the rest of Chicago and no one will complain. Can you pleased explain in more detail "Because if loud music and people breaking the law is what bothers you, you will have a rude awakening"? How many people are law breakers there?

There are a lot of comments along the lines of "stay home" or "go to another part of the park". To those people, you do realize there are people who live near this part of the park (and who have for years) who don't have the option to do that, and can't get any peace. And while El Corillo may just be people enjoying music and they have for years, other people with more sinister intentions do engage in legitimately dangerous behavior around there and do so by trying to blend in with the others.

Fundraiser for three injured cats

Hi neighbors. Please share and donate if you can. My friend rescued three injured community cats in Hermosa and is raising funds for their treatments. She does a ton of volunteer cat rescue work and could use some funding. Thanks!

Recommendation for Exterior / Porch Paint and Repair

Fellow EveryBlockers, can anyone recommend someone to handle painting and possibly a few repairs for a painted porch? I have a single family home and need a professional to repaint and possibly a replace a bit of the front porch, e.g., spindles. Recommendations of any professionals you have worked with will be much appreciated.

  • Hi there Megan,
Peralta was a no go for us. Canceled on coming to quote twice before making it out and when finally did send a quote, it was more than 6 weeks later. I used Roberto Brass. ‭(779) 233-7830‬. Painting, repair, sod. He’s very reasonable in price too. Best of luck!

  • Thanks for the recommendation of above (and I sooo appreciate knowing about someone wasting my time...)

Kedzie Green Line Station Safe?

Everyday it takes me 1hr 40min to get to and from the South Loop. It's ridiculous. I blame the fact they got rid of the Western Xpress and than add to it that Ventra sucks (takes like 5 taps to get it to say go). The commute to and from work is killing me. By car, the drive is only 15-20min max, but as I said by bus its like 1hr 40min. so I'm looking for different options. The Homan/Kimball bus runs awesome and I was thinking I can take that to the Kedzie/Lake Green Line Station and take the Green Line to Roosevelt. However, I'm wondering how safe it is? Does anyone know? I'm a little white girl just fyi. Please let me know. I want my life back.

  • I used to take the homan bus to the greenline. I much rather prefer the conservatory stop. It's a short walk from homan and it's a beautiful station. Plus you can easily get a seat from that station. Greenline is wonderful.

CPD does NOT keep this area clear despite having a nerve center at 11 and the fancy sdsc shot spotter technology. They can see EVERYTHING illegal and just let it go on under their inattentive eyes.

DOP does not keep the city inventory of vacant lots CLEAN and free of debris. Only this year are they cutting these dozens of lots with lawn cutting blades on a tractor. Every other year they used farm shredders on the back of the farm tractor.

Why have cameras if no police will use them in a proactive way to make a blighted slum area better?

I guess catering to the neighborhood crowd needs the particular amenities they need. Example: Liquor store at hand ans free Salvation Army soup. Bus benches will do to hang all day. Bring lawn chairs and other broken down stuff and leave on the vacant city owned lot so you can save a permanent space next to your very thin sparse shade tree.

Will forward this EB posting to MANY in city hall. Lets see who rallys to HELP US.

Gunshots on 2200 block of North Talman?

Did anyone hear gunshots (4-5) at 9:45pm Sunday, May 13th around the 2200 block of North Talman? Sounded like they were close. One neighbor said that he heard the shots and then a car's screeching tires afterwards. I called 911 to report, but wasn't sure where it exactly occurred. Thank you.

  • Ran into a neighbor yesterday who had the cops come out, filed and report, and showed them a casing. Just north of Belden on Tallman across from the school.

BEWARE: Door-to-Door energy scam

Hey neighbors,

Someone just came to my door claiming to be from Star Energy Partners. They had a whole shpiel about switching over, getting all green energy, paying half on my bill and not paying for coal fees. I told them to please come back another time, did a quick google search and saw that it is most likely a scam. You can read more about it at the links below. Basically, if anybody comes door-to-door trying to get you to switch your energy service DO NOT SIGN UP without doing your research first.
