    Are the Police Racist?
Are the police racist? Do they disproportionately shoot African-Americans? Are incidents in places like Ferguson and Baltimore evidence of systemic discrimination? Heather Mac Donald, a scholar at the Manhattan Institute, explains.

  • JJ,
I am not trying to insult you, but did you read the original post or the posted report?

It is about cities spending taxpayer money on large verdict payouts, and the way investors that are cozy with pols make a ton of money off of us taxpayers.

  • gpblight 22 Yr East Garfield Resident

This is a MUST READ. Chicago is 1/12 or .080 of the cities listed. YET we issue 81% of the BONDS to pay for 709/877mil of police brutality case losses.

Chicago Taxpayers are floating bonds and paying INTEREST on these brutality cases.

Who can stop this nonsense?????? What in the world is the BUDGET DIRECTOR thinking?

Please READ and say an opinion. I had NO IDEA that Bonds would be floated to cover this loss! Taxpayers not only pay but we pay interest on top of it!!!!

Catalytic converter?

Anyone know where I can get a catalytic converter replaced for less than $350? I have a 2002 honda odyssey. Some scum bag cut it out the night before last on LeMoyne and Kedzie.

  • Jerry Cargill Photographer, Teacher, Live on Milwaukee Ave.

There are theft-proof cages you can have installed over your CC when you get it replaced. A quick online search should get one for the M&M of your car.

  • bricknmortar Humboldt resident since 1990

Thank you JC I didn't know that. I also learned that there is an oxygen sensor in vehicles attached to the converter which is also stolen at the time because of course thieves just cut the whole thing out. This sensor is another $150 and you need it if you wan't your vehicle to pass the emissions test!

Does anyone know a great seamstress or tailor in the Humboldt Park, Logan Square, Wicker Park, or Bucktown area?
I have a nice dress for a wedding that I need to get tailored!

Thanks!

Hi Neighbors,

This post is to notify you all that a steering committee have assembled and filed an application for a Dog Friendly Area (DFA) in Humboldt Park! We have the support of the park manager and the alderman, and there generally seems to be much support from neighbors, but to pull it off we'll need to show a lot of support from dog owners and non-dog owners in the neighborhood.

As some of you may know, we submitted an application at the end of last year, and it came back a few months later, denied not for lack of support or need, but because we simply asked for more land than the parks department maximum allowed for Dog Friendly Areas. With the huge area available in HP we thought it worth trying to break the rule on the premise that it could result in a vaster play area for dogs, and perhaps serve to attract more people to the park from other neighborhoods. We have resubmitted with a smaller designated area (15000 sq. ft.), and are hopeful.

Thanks to the community-minded trailblazers in other neighborhoods, the Parks Department has a fairly comprehensive website on Dog Friendly Areas. See this link:
http://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/facilities/dog-friendly-areas/

If you scroll down there is another link after a few paragraphs, to procedures for establishing a Dog Friendly Area. Anyone interested should familiarize themselves with the process but in summary:

STEP 1. Assemble a steering committee
STEP 2. Communicate with appropriate authorities and establish a suitable location
STEP 3. File an application
STEP 4. If approved, petition neighbors for signatures (100 needed from both dog-owners and non-dog owners)
STEP 5. Conduct surveys of proposed area to determine potential impact, 4x over 1 year.
STEP 6. Raise $ and commit to at least 3 years of ongoing management.

We're in step 3 now, and looking for your support! Please reply below if you support having a Dog Friendly Area in Humboldt Park!

  • I am 100% in for a dog friendly area in the park - Apple would love it :) 🐶

I work for a liquor company as well so I could likely help out once it gets to the fundraiser party point in the list 😎

  • I fully support having a dog park/ designated dog friendly area in Humboldt Park, as a pet owner I would love to take my dog on a play date/dates.

Here is the standard lost cat Top Ten "to do" list:

    1. put her litterbox outside along with something else she sleeps on or smells like you.
    2. make photo posters and put them in neighbors' doors asking them to check their garages or other places she could be closed in. post on poles around your neighborhood; posters have been found to be the #1 thing that gets cats home.
    3. if you got your cat at a shelter, call the shelter as if the cat is found the chip will come back to them, not you.
    4. call the closest vets and let them know he is missing and see if they have any reports; people sometimes take found pets there to see if they are chipped.
    5. monitor animal control and visit in person;
    6. list on craigslist lost and found, lost cats Illinois, etc.
    7. go out at dusk with a high powered flashlight and call and look for the reflection of the cat's eyes (she has probably not gone too far); call near closed garage doors and listen for a response.
8.. get up in the middle of the night, (2-3) when it is very quiet and open your front and back doors and call her.
    9. if cat freaks out being outside, borrow or rent a trap from one of the shelters and bait it with her favorite smelliest food, cover with blanked and leave on your property or where cat has been sited. You may need to release other animals and set several times. If you need a trap, post that here, as people will often direct you to where one is available.
    10. update us here with cat sighting, and when cat is recovered, update your post with what works or doesn't so we can help other people.
Good luck and keep looking. If you search "lost cat" on everyblock you will see other suggestions and stories of cats recovered after a month or more.

  • Great list.

This years Puerto Rican Fest was the first time they charged a $2 donation at the gate. They claimed that the money was earmarked for the Hurricane Maria recovery effort.

Low and behold, four days after the Fest is over the President of The Puerto Rican Parade Committee went into the 14th District desk to report that "up to $70,000" was stolen from the donation boxes. He's claiming that security was responsible for the theft. Sorry Hurricane Maria survivors, maybe next year.
All sorts of untraceable cash in boxes at a political "festival." Kind of reminds us of the shady accounting that goes on every year at the Taste.<<<

Humboldt Park batting cages

Went to check out the park's new batting cages and they are locked with chains. Anyone know what's going on? I left a message with the park too, no word yet... thanks.

  • Brandy Humboldt Park Dweller

I went last Saturday. When I spoke to the Park District they indicated that they're open from 10-3 on Saturdays - Same info as LSanne.

There was one employee there and tokens were free until they get the "kinks" worked out.

The balls seemed to get jammed quite a bit in the cage we had and if you went to go get the employee another kid would have already tried to take your spot :) So it was pretty busy when we went.

Ruby - avoid Roto Rooters. PLEASE! Their technician forgot to put a cap on an abandoned toilet in the basement and after a big storm, I had to clean up a basement full of sewer waste! They said they would come immediately when I called at 8am but showed up 6:30pm. I am still dealing with them trying to get some kind of compensation for this but they are wrapping me up in red tape. I recommend J. Stewert Drain 773-271-1002 or 773-561-8399. These guys were 1/3 less the price of the other estimate. Bill is 3rd generation drain expert. He stays in the truck and his team reports to him there. They may look a little "rough around the edges" but they know what they are doing and their price is great!

  • SumpPro... a little pricey but works great and easy to install... if you want some help let me know... wont take long to put in

Home builder suggestions?

Hi all, We've thought about building in the neighborhood, but all the GC's we've spoken to seem to be price gouging. Doing a hail mary pass here, can anyone suggest a home builder that's ethical, with reasonable prices? Every builder we've spoken to seems to look at the land prices in the area, look up the most expensive new houses in the area, subtract the two and then gives us the build price, leaving no equity. Two GC's outright admitted that that's how they determined the bid price.
Thanks for any helpful suggestions.

  • There is also the 'premium' charged for a trendy neighborhood. East of Western is one price, west of western another. I've had contractors tell me that.

  • Scott Rappe Architect, Father, Fourth Generation East Villager

We are a local architectural firm that focuses on custom residential design. We have a very good builder that we partner with to do design-build. This is a good approach if you want good custom design within a specific budget. Check out www.kplusr.com and feel free to give me a call. No obligation.

  • When the federal government provided 56M for the project, it became a transportation thoroughfare.

It was not exclusively made as a bicycle trail but part of the agreement with the federal dollars meant that it must be used as a transportation route. Which includes all form of transportation, including walking, biking, skate-boarding, and no limitations on your dog companion.

  • Ellen,
I agree with your recollection. Also, the East end of the Trail is walking distance to the Metra at Ashland and Armitage, so it was considered a leg ( pardun the pun) to downtown or out to the burbs.

Also, The Friends of the Bloomingdale Trail was run by a bunch of bicycle enthusiasts, which is who took the point for 15 years on this project.

he weekend began with seven people shot in just an hour on the South Side. It ended with 10 people shot in two attacks on the West Side.

By Monday morning, at least 56 people had been hit by gunfire in Chicago over the weekend. At least nine of them died, according to data kept by the Tribune.

It was the worst weekend for violence in the city this year. But more troubling, it was close to comparable weekends in 2016 and 2017, when gun violence hit levels not seen in Chicago in more than a decade.

"Most of Chicago celebrated and enjoyed this weekend," Chicago police First Deputy Superintendent Anthony Riccio told reporters, referring to Pride Fest on the North Side and various Father’s Day celebrations. "However, we saw an unacceptable and frustrating level of gun violence in several communities.

“There’s too many illegal guns on the street,” he added, echoing a constant theme of his boss, Superintendent Eddie Johnson. “They’re too easy to get.”

As bad as shootings have been in some parts of the city this year, overall they have been down substantially from the previous two years. But not last weekend, an analysis of Tribune data shows.

At least 59 people were shot in Chicago during the weekend of June 16 last year and again during the weekend of June 17 in 2016.

Weather was no doubt a factor. Temperatures climbed into the middle 90s both days, drawing more people into the street later into the night. According to police, that usually increases the odds of rivals running into each other or arguments escalating into gunfire.

Two of the city's most violent police districts bore the brunt of the weekend gunfire: 10 shot in Harrison, 9 in bordering Ogden, the data show. The next highest was the Near West Side District: 7 shot in two attacks. The Englewood District to the south also recorded 7 shot.

'Unacceptable and frustrating': Chicago sees most violent weekend of the year
