Chicago Water Meter

Hey Everyone, we purchased our Single Family home a little less then a year ago & we do not have a water meter installed. Our current water bill is just under $500 (6 months) for 2 people. What is everyone's experience with this? Is it beneficial to get the meter installed?

Something is definitely wrong. I administer a Condo building in Elmwood Park (which buys water from Chicago). For eight appartments with a family ea. we pay $800 every other month. That includes the boiler, common areas, laundry, etc.

I moved in my house four years ago. I have two full baths, dishwasher and W&D. I live on a corner lot so when I water in the summer, it's a lot to water. A homeowner friend and my plumber told me as a single person living here, I must get the water meter. It's one of the first things I did when I moved here. The total bill comes to about $25 every two months. Your estimated bill could be based upon a user BLOCKS away not just two doors down. A water meter is a must.

Doorbell Ringing Near Milwuakee and Kildare

Has anyone's doorbells been ringing from 1 am to for 4 am lately? My family and I are quite worried about this incident. There was no banging of doors, but the doorbells were just at it.

  • Has this happened more than once? Do you have a wireless doorbell? After I installed one I bought at Home Depot, my doorbell would ring but there’d be no one on my porch. I was perplexed for months until I noticed that every time this happened there was someone at the door on my neighbor’s porch across the street. Their wireless doorbell was apparently set to the same frequency so whenever someone pushed their doorbell, it rang at my house.

  • Same here with the wireless doorbell. We had to finally get rid of ours, after we realized it rang everytime there was someone at the door of the house across the street from us. Hope that is all it is for you. If not, I would be installing cameras.

Shootings near Ridgeway & Milwaukee

There have been shootings in this area before, but this week on 2/15 and 2/14/18 a couple of cars, one being a black Honda Civic, with their lights turned off have openly shot at the house second to last from the alley near Ridgeway and Milwaukee. If I had to guess, it’s the house with the 2984 address that got shot at.

The guys that live at the location are bad news. They attract violence. I don’t know if the shootings are gang related, but I’ve seen drugs and guns at that location and now they are being shot at. It’s really scary and there are a lot of little kids in the area.

Does anyone have further info or has anything to add to this post? I want to contact the police and anything neighbors can add may be helpful.

Thanks

Thanx 4 the info. I often walk that block. I will definitely change my route. I have CC but not into pushing the envelope.

  • I walk dogs on that street frequently and have been yelled at incoherently by people in front of that house multiple times. I avoid that side of the street, and now it all makes sense....

Ice Dam...water dripping into back rooms

Hello neighbors. Woke up to frozen interior rear stairs and some pretty bad leaks in the back rooms this morning. Looks like Ive got one helluvan ice dam. Anyone have a reputable company they can recommend to clear the ice today? Or any other recommendations? Trying to prevent thousands in water damage. Thanks for your help.

  • Do you have anyone that you would recommend to install the ice cables? I have a huge issue I'm a second-story roof gutter area and have since I moved in 5 years ago. I have an ice dam on the south side of my house and this year is three times larger than last year. I'm pretty sure that those ice cables would solve my problem!

  • It can be a bit complicated to install the melt cables as it requires power. The cables I am familiar with are plug-in, so getting a new wet-use electric line run to your roof or near your roof with an outdoor use waterproof box/pipe/connectors and GFCI outlet can be the...

It can be a bit complicated to install the melt cables as it requires power. The cables I am familiar with are plug-in, so getting a new wet-use electric line run to your roof or near your roof with an outdoor use waterproof box/pipe/connectors and GFCI outlet can be the main expense.

As far as operation is concerned, they sell accompanying plug-in thermostats for $17 that will allow power to your melt cable based on the outdoor temperature hitting a certain reading. Personally I think this is a waste of energy as then the cable will be on when it is cold and not snowy as well as when there is snow.

I like them on a switch in the basement that I control. Or on a multi-level structure you can have the power line run somewhere under the back porch.

I'm not a fan of Home Depot due to their policy or frequent decision of re-stocking returns that customers have brought back as broken or missing parts, but there is a video on ice melt cable installation there. I hate it when I have to go back because I was sold some broken or incomplete garbage. I've had plenty of good experience at HD, also but they simply and easily could do better. Another beef is if there is one certain thing I need there is a shelf label there, the wrong thing is in that spot, and there are 28-49 of each item next to it and zero of the item I need.

Here is the product and video link:

Not a Nanny Share but I have a small in-home daycare located by Elston & Irving Park with over 18 yrs. of experience and I am CPR certified. I provide healthy, well balanced meals and snacks in a loving and nurturing environment, have excellent references from past and present parents and I charge reasonable rates. Some of our daily activities include music, play and story time along with plenty of outside time in our beautiful gated and grassy courtyard.

I know how difficult it is to leave your child with someone but I assure you I will give your little one all the love, attention and care they need unlike some of those huge daycare facilities. I would love the opportunity to care for your little one, so please contact me for more information or to set up an appointment to come by and see the beautiful set up. Thank you!

Anyone else have a gas outage around the Sacramento / Elston block?

Apparently there's a gas outage in the neighborhood from what a PeoplesGas person told me.

  • Yeah, I saw a bunch of ComEd trucks and crews on Belmont between Troy and Sacramento last night around 6, looks like they were about to start digging up the street too.

  • I'm on Sacramento approximately at Addison and did not have any gas outage.
