EB may be leaving, but we're all still here. Let's start an EveryBlock (or whatever) sub-reddit!

hey all. i'm equally bummed about losing everyblock. i've become used to all the great input, feedback and dissenting opinions...even the varied responses to trolls. they enrich my morning. :)

so why give it up? surely some of you know about reddit.com. we can create a sub-reddit just for us. if we ALL hopped over to a new sub-reddit, then we wouldn't have to lose a thing. we could retain our anonymity. all we need are some basic posting rules...

so why give it up? surely some of you know about reddit.com. we can create a sub-reddit just for us. if we ALL hopped over to a new sub-reddit, then we wouldn't have to lose a thing. we could retain our anonymity. all we need are some basic posting rules and a few moderators to oversee it. i'm happy to volunteer to get us started but would certainly appreciate some input from the EB regulars.

i haven't thought out the details, because i know we are all from different neighborhoods...but calling it chicago-northsiders or something comes to mind. there are already a couple of NWside sub-reddits, but they are vastly underused. we could at least just start one and see what happens.

your thoughts?

@Kim, what I said was I was setting up a group in Reddit for the FAR N.W. Side and I gave the zipcodes. Some people were only interested in the Far N. W. Side. Those were the groups a lot of us were signed up for on Everyblock. We picked the neighborhoods we were interested in. The majority of people I saw all of the time were in the zipcode areas I picked. Statch mentioned a group already created on Reddit that is inclusive of the zips I mentioned plus a lot more on the NW side. Perhaps thats the group to go with https://www.reddit.com/r/ChicagoNWside/

My personal thought was to keep it focused on the areas a lot the regulars were in so it wouldn't be so big it's difficult to scan through everything. That said, I'm thinking I will personally use the one Statch found. So far it looks like it has the info I'm interested in plus more.

I'm going to keep up the FB page created for awhile and see what happens. If there isn't much activity on it, I'll ask the others who joined it if they want to keep it or move to the ChicagoNWside group on Reddit.

I'll be on there as Nik 52 on Reddit.

The group is already created on Reddit and anyone can join from anywhere. I figure why duplicate it and make things more complex and perhaps lose some of the regulars.

If others are going to be on it too, do you think that we should all give our user names for the Reddit Group?

I'm sure this will all work out, I look forward to seeing all of the regulars at ChicagoNWside https://www.reddit.com/r/ChicagoNWside/ or the Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/groups/244353649695858/

P.S. If you were thinking of a group that encompassed all of Chicago like Everyblock did I guess you could do that. But maybe there are already groups for different areas of the City and any of us can join anyone of them that we're interested in like the Eastside, Wes side, Southside or Far Southside.

Let me know what you think. Thanks for the input and trying to keep us together.

Cook County Towing/Avondale Collision - Open Meeting at City Hall

Neighbors - we've all complained now we must insist the City follow through! Please attend an open meeting at City Hall, 121 N LaSalle, room 805 on Thurs, Oct 5, 10 AM.

The purpose of this meeting is to address the numerous complaints of reckless driving, aggressive behavior, noise at all hours of the day and night, misuse of the lot at Keeler & Milwaukee in accordance with zoning, and overall "junkyard" state of the property occupied by these businesses.

Please attend. Please bring your neighbors. Please call the alderman's office, and more importantly 911 when you see issues happening in real time.

We deserve respectful neighbors in our community and these businesses are infringing on our safety.

  • To address the concerns and take steps towards being better neighbors, AC was advised that they needed to operate inside the scope of their business license. To address the concerns and take steps towards being better neighbors, AC was advised that they needed to operate inside the scope of their business license. Their working hours should not go past 6 p.m. They should provide their contract with CCT for review. They are only permitted 15 (possibly 16) spaces on their Milwaukee-facing lot. They should not load out or receive any cars on the Keeler side. Drops on the Milwaukee side must be on the property (street drops not allowed). Signage was required (and subsequently displayed) pertaining to driving cautiously and being quiet. Vendors are to use the Milwaukee-side entrance only to conduct business.

Per the owner of Avondale Collision, they used to but do not currently have a contract with Cook County Towing.

I call all this non-progress because the last meeting with Chicago Business Affairs and Consumer Protection it was deemed that AC provided all documentation and signage to maintain their business and continue to operate at Milwaukee and Keeler, and since then we've seen the number of cars in the lot continue to grow again, CCT continue to drop off cars after 6pm + AC being open beyond 6pm. The only "win" I've witnessed is that the CCT are less likely to idle next to my home, but, from the comments here and recent comments on Facebook, it sounds like they have just found new spots to and neighbors to disturb. Please keep calling 911 to report reckless driving, please keep telling the Aldermans this is unacceptable behavior from a neighbor.

  • No contract with CCT...what a joke, I’m going to snap a photo every chance I see a cct truck dropping a car off

Dear Families and Community Members,

I hope you are enjoying your summer and have taken time to rest and relax.

To help prevent the large fireworks displays that have happened the past few years, we will be locking the gates to the parking lot and back entrance on July 3 and 4, however families may still access the playground through the playground entrance. In addition to these measures, we will have security and maintenance staff posted at our Kedvale location to ensure trucks are not pulling up with large amounts of fireworks.

Disney II does not sanction fireworks displays in our field or play lot, so we ask that you call 911 if you see any fireworks displays being set up.

Sincerely,
Kathleen Speth
Principal, Disney II Magnet School

  • Yes, I will miss the drunk people setting off high-explosives and watching girls urinate in the doorways of the school.

  • They also have a 25 year tradition of leaving an absolute mess in the park: spent fireworks, empty beer bottles, have eaten food and plenty of general garbage. I won't miss the fireworks display at all, and either will my dog. Go someplace where it is done safely and legally.

New to the neighborhood!

Is there an Old Irving Park Parents/Mom facebook page? We just moved to Old Irving Park from Lakeview for a little more space as we wait for our first little one. Being first time parents we were wondering if there was somewhere to find other parents, look for childcare, and stay in the know! Thanks so much.

how much did you pay for your wall-mounted AC?

we're looking into getting one of those wall-mounted mitsubishi AC units for the balmy top level of our bungalow. does anyone else have one and, if so, how much did you pay for it? we got a quote yesterday of $5000 to install it, which seemed rather high. getting more estimates, but curious what your experience is. thanks!

  • Waveland_5400 Retired and loving it!

$5000? It would be far cheaper to have a nice Polish contractor poke a hole in your wall for a through the wall air conditioner. It takes up no window space. We did this when we put our small dormer on the bungalow 12 years ago and never regretted it. They are a bit more expensive than the window units but nothing compared to what you're getting ready to put down.

Hello,

It deeply saddens to me to notify everyone that on Sunday June 17 a number of swastika, white nationalist, anti refugee, and generally hateful stickers with razor blades hidden underneath were found at and around Kilbourn Park.

Majority of these were removed by community members and myself in the presence of police officers. Over TEN razor blades were located under the stickers, so that should anyone attempt to remove these stickers, the potential for harm was present. These were within the playground perimeter as well.

Police have asked that if more stickers of this nature are found to please call Area North headquarters at (312) 744-8263 with the location of the stickers and state that you are calling to report more stickers of a hateful nature to add to the already existing report from Kilbourn park on 6/17/18.

At this time they requested that they not be removed so that an officer may come evidence the sticker and potentially collect prints.

Currently, there are still stickers within the park that have not been removed and I intend to call the authorities today to inquire why they have not been taken down. Additionally, municipal stop signs at Kenneth and Roscoe still have stickers as well as a pedestrian yield sign at 3342 Kostner.

Thank you for your attention and awareness of this event.
