Dead Body Found Down the Block

A week ago today I was walking to the local grocery store near Belmont and Knox. As I approached the corner I noticed a news man taking video behind the senior center. My initial thought was that perhaps he was doing a story about the senior home. But when I returned from the store I noticed many more news reporters had joined the scene. At this point I questioned the first reporter I encountered. He mentioned that a dead man was found in the alley shot to death. Which that alone turned out be false to some extent. As I continued down the block I encountered another reporter at the other end of the alley off of Barry Ave. At this point I was a little more surprised because we was getting a lot closer to my residence. I said to him, "I hear it was fatal, any specifics as to what happened?" And he said that they found a man dead in the alley but no one knows what was the cause of death. He said he even walked the alley to see if he noticed a sign of the crime scene but could not pinpoint the spot where the body was found. There was no blood on the ground or anything, not even yellow tape. I mentioned that the prior reporter said it was a gun wound. And he said that no one really knows, that his report indicated that the man was beat to death and found a couple hours earlier lying in the alley.

The Tribune report:

https://www.google.com/amp/www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/ct-met-man-found-dead-in-alley-040818-story,amp.html

That was it! I never heard an update. And this startles me to the core because my grandchildren and I live right down the street from this crime scene. For all I know we have a murderer on the lose in the neighborhood!

Does anyone know who to reach out to to find out more? I'm curious to know if they determined who the individual was? Cause of death? Was it a local resident? Was it gang related? Was it someone that may perhaps been murdered elsewhere and just dumped in the alley? So many questions are unanswered.

  • Yes, just as Bellhome says... go to your local police station or call them and tell them of your concern and questions. Each station has its own number.
You never mentioned there were any cops around just reporters. (?!) were the police there when you approached each reporter you confronted?

  • Clef in Jeff Park, no now that you mention it I didn't see any officers around. Then again, the police were alerted to the body sometime around 7:30am and when I walked by it was already around 10:15am. I don't know if that was enough time for them to conduct their investigation though.

Robin Hood, you have repeatedly asserted you are unemployable as you consistently exhibit on EB that you have marketable job skills. Long between Grace and Addison is nothing more than an express way between Central and Laramie. Most cars accelerate thru the "stop" signs with some passing cars while stopped. What is most surprising is that there isn't as many incidents as one would think given just how bad it is. It's just a matter of time until a small child gets nailed at one of these useless intersections. I'm not a round a bout person, but to see 9 out of 10 cars blow right thru these signs is shocking and something really needs to be done. Especially, given the proximity of Gray School = 2 blocks.

  • Can't agree with you more cars ignore all stop signs from Waveland to Irving.

Mailbox dropboxes?

Hello neighbors, I've been walking a bit around the Portage Park neighborhood and haven't yet spied a location to drop off regular mail. Are there any mailboxes in the area close to 6 corners?

  • *there’s also a box at Lockwood and Irving Park Rd

  • Go to USPS.com. Click Quick Tools, then USPS Locator. Use the drop down menu under collection types and pick drop box. Enter your zip code and it will give you a map and addresses.

Gunshots?!

Has anyone else heard gunshots these past two nights? I heard some Friday morning then some about 1 hour ago sounded near of Kilbourn and Roscoe. Called in, only Roscoe was swept up and down.

    Hi,
My husband and I are moving to Kilbourn and Roscoe in a couple of weeks. We're coming from Logan Square (Armitage & California) so we're very familiar with crime although our block is great. We've had our fair share of gunshots in the surrounding area but generally feel very safe at most times. We're not very familiar with the area yet. Do you guys have any tips or insight? How is the crime around the park? We thought the area would be similar to Logan, maybe a bit better. The block around the park seems very quiet. Is there a lot of gang activity? Break-ins? We would love the hear the overall consensus on crime.

Jaylynn, I feel like the crime that used to be prevalent in Logan Square and Humboldt Park has moved its way over to the Kilbourn Park/South OIP region. I really want to move off of my block (3500 Lowell), and I've lived in the area since 2011, and I've lived in the Chicago region my whole life. Schurz High School is close to my home and I don't like the students who are loud, have gang ties, and discard trash on our block. I constantly worry about break-ins. A neighbor told me about their car that was stolen. There's too much "flow" in the area, because of Milwaukee, Addison and Roscoe cutting through it and motorists who don't live in the area fly down our streets blasting music. The cafe at the end of my block generates too much vehicular traffic, patrons take up all of the parking, and too much litter. My brother currently lives with me and is planning to move to the suburbs; his car has had significant damage from being parked on our street. The workers at the nearby factories, plus Schurz kids, park all over the neighborhood streets and people from other areas leave cars for days on our block. I've found myself leaving notes asking people to move their semi-abandoned car. I loved when the immediate area was quiet with people who took pride in their homes. Housing prices have risen, too, but I find myself constantly watching over my shoulder and keeping a look-out at the doings of the neighbors. Several other long-time neighbors echo my feelings. We clean the storm drains when it rains of all the man-made, discarded objects that block the drains. Beer cans and liquor bottles sit on curbs. I've caught people sitting in cars late at night. Our lawns constantly get dog poo. I'm assuming the "bad elements" that were driven-out by gentrification of Logan Square have landed in our area; it just was so different. Keep a watch out; report things; be that change you want to see in others. Otherwise, you'll get stuck with a bunch of neighbors who couldn't care less.
