Woman dead, several taken to hospitals after 3 early morning fires
Ivan Ramierz and Sully Torres woke up early Saturday morning to a popping noise outside their top-floor window. Ramirez looked outside and saw the brightness of fire near the house next door on Kilpatrick Avenue. He bolted out of bed and outside, where he saw flames leaping about 3 feet high from the hood of his neighbor's pickup truck, he said.

Incredibles 2 : Who's afraid of the superpowered woman?
This review contains spoilers. Superhero movies are such a part of our theatergoing experience that it's easy to forget Pixar's The Incredibles riffed on the conventions of the genre before it became pervasive. The movie came out in 2004, four years before Iron Man kicked off the Marvel Comics Universe, and unlike other movies revolving around costumed crime-fighters, it focused on family dynamics.

Superfly rolls back the clock on African-American movie heroes
This review contains spoilers. S uperfly appears to be superflopping. Released last Wednesday on 2,220 screens nationwide, the Columbia Pictures remake of the 1972 blaxploitation favorite has grossed only $10.7 million to date, a dismal figure for such a wide opening.

Upgrade is so derivative, it's original
Leigh Whannell's low-budget horror feature Upgrade, now playing in general release, reminds me of the goofy genre mash-ups made by Brian De Palma in the 1960s and '70s (Hi, Mom! , Phantom of the Paradise ) and Takashi Miike in the 1990s and the aughts (Fudoh: The New Generation , The Happiness of the Katakuris ).
