Scammers working the neighborhood

My 85-year-old mother (near 62nd & Mason) received a visit today from a guy who said his name is Mike Diaz and a female companion. He provided a phone number of 773-312-7675, but not on a business card; my mother wrote down his name and number. I've been calling all afternoon, but it just rings and rings -- no answer, no voice mail.

He talked about her chimney needing some work and some loose shingles on the roof, and said he could come back the next day to fix it. All she had to do was give him some cash up front to buy the necessary supplies for the repairs. Fortunately, she told them she had no money and that her daughter handled that kind of thing for her. Unfortunately, she let them into the house for a few minutes. No harm done this time, except to my blood pressure level.

Talk to your old people and tell them to trust no one, no matter how "nice" and "talkative" and "pleasant" they seem to be, and not to let strangers into their homes!

  • A message to all senior citizens, DO NOT LET NOBODY IN YOUR HOME, BETTER YET CALL THE POLICE

  • A message that cannot be stress enough to our seniors and in general. There are some heartless people out there. People who get up in the morning to hurt other people.

    Be safe!!!!!!!

Pulaski Train Station

When you park in that lot be very careful not to leave anything valuable in your vehicle. They like to break in and take what doesn’t belong to them. I don’t have a radio in my truck because they have stolen it twice. I have a hole in my dash where the radio used to be and would you believe they tried to break in my truck AGAIN!! I HAVE AN ALARM ON MY TRUCK AND THEY ARE STILL TRYING TO GET IN. Be careful parking there the police won’t do anything about it BUT they want you to give a donation. Yeah like I’m going to do that!!

What's that smell?

Does anyone know what that odor is in Garfield Ridge at 5:45 a.m. on Saturday 4/21? It woke me up. Inside the house, I first thought it resembled a "wet heat" odor -- like an old radiator smell (but I have gas heat). Opened the front door and was hit with a much stronger smell -- almost like some garlic/onion/spice combination, but with a more chemical note. It stuck to my clothes in the 3 seconds that I was out there. I've smelled lots of foul things around here over the years, but this particular odor is new to me.

Garfield Ridge library

Where was the Garfield Ridge library’s original location?

  • Daniel Ferone Home Owner

I remember in the late 50's & early 60's it was a Library bus or van.

Sometime later it was store front located on Archer east of Oak Park on the south side of the street.about 6743 S. Archer.

Prior to the current location I believe it was at 6322 S Archer which became an eye doctor's office.

  • Many spots used bookmobile. One driver and 1-3 librarians. Would travel from location to another. They were fazed out in the 80's
