5150 N Northwest Hwy proposal left off state housing authority agenda

Preliminary agenda for state board meeting on low-income housing tax credits does not include proposal for 5150 N Northwest Hwy. Barring any late changes to the agenda, it is not clear what impact the lack of tax credits would have on the feasibility of the housing proposal for this year. The developer, Full Circle Communities, could not be reached for comment. Tax credits are often required for affordable housing developments. One local housing group has questioned the neutrality of the state board. http://nadignewspapers.com/2018/05/15/5150-project-not-on-preliminary-agenda-for-low-income-housing-tax-credits/

There has to be some kind of kick back of some sort. These guys cannot ever be trusted b/c they could care less about public opinion. It will always be all about the $$$$ with these guys in power. They are really expert at creating smoke screens. I have to sometimes wonder how these guys sleep at night?? Probably better than the rest of us honest folks IMHO. Just my general opinion...

Our Nation grieves with those affected by the shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas. May God heal the injured and may God comfort the wounded, and may God be with the victims and with the victims’ families. As a mark of solemn respect for the victims of the terrible act of violence perpetrated on May 18, 2018, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, May 22, 2018. I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same length of time at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this eighteenth day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand eighteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-second.

So far in 2018, there have already been 42 school shootings, and more than 200 children have been killed or injured by guns.

My older relatives say that when the Taste first started in 1979 or 80, the idea was you could come and pay like 25c or 50c each for a "taste" of a lot of different foods. That's why the portions are so small, though the prices have shot up over the years.

Incident on Kennedy Early Sunday A.M.

Does anybody know what happened on the eastbound Kennedy I-90 Sunday morning around 6 a.m.?

It happened just east of the Austin Ave exit and it appeared that first responders had the Kennedy completely shut down. Thankfully I was able to exit at Austin Ave to avoid the gridlock but others were not so lucky.

  • I keep getting thumbs up for this post.

This is somewhat puzzling as I'm asking a question about a presumed incident on the Kennedy last Sunday morning.

    Does anyone know what happened???

Beware of Caldwell Central Auto 6301 N Central

We had our car towed here last Monday. It wasn’t until Friday we got the diagnosis of a timing belt & water pump for $2800. Since we had the timing belt changed 30,000 miles previously and the unprofessional way Pedro dealt with us we paid the $90 diagnostic fee and had it towed to Albany Auto.

They found it was the alternator at a fraction of the Caldwell Central price and we are happily driving again.

Wow -Another buyer beware scenario. I have many times been misquoted by shady auto mechanics. When they think you are an idiot, they will try anything to make you believe your auto needs repairs that are not legit. Glad you got out of there and thanks for the heads up!

  • $2800.00? I think $ 450.00 would be the cost for an alternator & belt, maybe $550.00. There’s a guy at Central & Sunnyside, an old looking gas station/garage. Sam has been there for maybe 20 years & always honest. Worth a visit.

Pros and Cons of North Mayfair?

Hi, everyone! Our family is considering buying a home in North Mayfair. It seems really lovely, quiet, safe, and has some great community involvement! What do you like or dislike about this neighborhood? Are people generally politically conservative or liberal? Is it diverse? Are there lots of little kids? We have a five-year-old who will be looking for playmates. Thanks in advance for sharing your experience!

  • North Mayfair is a great neighborhood. Depending on where in the neighborhood you are you can actually walk to the blue line at Montrose. It is a diverse neighborhood with many young families moving in. There are also residents who grew up here and that have opted to come back and raise their families in the neighborhood,

  • We have our share of crime, so don't think this is a crime free zone. There are no crime free zones in this city.
However, there are great people here and JP seems to be attracting more restaurants and shops. My neighbors are friendly and I'm grateful for them. 👍

The North Branch Trail Alliance (NBTA) of Greater Chicago is excited to announce that it was awarded the “Advocate of the Year Award for 2017” by the Active Transportation Alliance (ATA), Chicagoland’s leading voice for biking, walking, and transit. Steve Simmons, ATA Trail Advocacy Manager presented the award and said, “We’re grateful to be working closely with NBTA to advance trail networks along the river. Trails strengthen economic development and provide users with lasting cultural experiences. NBTA has made a valuable contribution to trail development by hosting bike rides, partnering on workshops, and joining the Chicago River Trail Coalition.”

Jac Charlier, NBTA President said “For NBTA to receive this recognition of the local economic development work we are doing that’s helping our neighborhood downtowns from Albany Park to Mayfair, Forest Glen to Edgebrook, to Niles, Morton Grove, Glenview and beyond, speaks to the value of moving from mostly seeing bike trails for ‘health and hobby’ to understanding them as real economic drivers for our small businesses.” Charlier said that NBTA is currently seeking businesses as well as Chambers of Commerce interested in becoming NBTA 2018 Business Partners.

The next NBTA ride will be on Saturday, May 19 at 11:30 AM, with the theme “Icons of our Northwest Area.” More about NBTA at www.northbranchtrailalliance.com on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

  • I love Carson's. Shopped there regularly. I like department stores. I like dealing with human beings. All these department stores closing. I don't even know what could replace the Carson's at the HIP or Sears at Six Corners. What's left? Sad.

  • Yeah, their sale prices are NOT that great; current designer piece on "Clearance" at Carson's is available for 40% less at Bloomingdale's!!

And Tic-toc ... re Carson's Gift Cards. The following is from Bonton's site:
    "GIFT CARDS
Can I still use gift cards or gift certificates? ...
    Yes, gift cards...

Yes, gift cards and gift certificates will continue to be honored for a period of 10 days following the first day of store closing sales, inclusive of the sale commencement date. Following this 10-day period, only cash and nationally recognized bank credit cards will be accepted during store closing sales. Gift Cards cannot be returned for cash
Can I still purchase a gift card or gift certificate? ...
No, gift cards are no longer available for purchase."

*they don't provide definitive dates, but Carson's 'store closing sales' commenced April 20, 2018; so this Monday April 30 & Tuesday May 1 are the last day to use Gift Cards.

Artificial Grass for Backyard with Dogs

Hi! Has anyone installed artificial grass in their backyard? We have one big dog but the neighbors’ dogs come over to play. I’ve read that people have had trouble with the heat of the grass during the summer and a strong urine smell (despite rinsing the area). Can someone please share their experience? What company did you use? Thanks!

  • John Garrido just had some installed in his yard.

One Tail at a Time rescue uses artificial grass in its exercise area. It gets a heavy workout, frequent cleanings and a drainage system might be in place. T

Rain Barrel Resources

Hi,
Has anyone found a good resource for rain barrels? I brought this up a few months ago, but all the programs had expired. I spoke to our alderman's office and they haven't done this in a while. I see Home Depot, Amazon, etc. have them for about $80. Craigslist has some posts too, but I've heard they can be contaminated even if they are "food grade" material.

If this is a dead end, I've found these sites that look like a decent option.

  • Costco has them.

  • A neighbor threw one out in the alley behind 4500 block of Lavergne and Laporte. It was still there this morning - and garbage day is Friday. It look exactly like the orange one pictured above and looks to be in good shape.

Handyman Recommendations? - Fascia Repair

Noticed a few pieces of fascia are pulling away from below roof/above upstairs window. Looking for recommendations for someone to repair our bungalow in Jefferson Park. Reached out to a few places - either outside of their scope or possibly not a big enough job to meet their minimum price thus far. Still waiting to hear back from one. Thanks for any assistance!

Rain Barrels in Chicago

Does anyone know if Chicago offers free is affordable rain barrels for home owners? I was shocked when I saw they were being sold for $80 - $180. It seems like something the water management department would advocate.

  • Well it was good of them to send the letter. Unusual.

  • Hi, has anyone heard about active rain barrel programs? I did contact my alderman, but they are not doing one now.

30 more officers planned for 16th District, but attrition will affect net gain - Nadig Newspapers - Northwest Side Local Newspapers
by BRIAN NADIG The 16th (Jefferson Park) Police District could receive 30 new police officers by October, but it is not clear what the net gain will be due to expected retirements and transfers. "I'm constantly asking for more officers," Alderman Anthony Napolitano (41st) said. "We're not keeping up with the rate of attrition."

Jeff Park Metra Terminal

Could someone tell me who is in charge of the Metra entryway at Jeff Park? Metra said it is CTA and CTA said it is Metra. I just need to report how filthy and disgusting it is trying to get to the platform. We should not have to walk through human waste, used toilet paper, beer bottles and cans. The smell is positively sickening, you have to hold your breath going up the escalator and going down the stairs. A homeless man is sleeping right by the door every day with all of his belongings.
