What's that smell?

Does anyone know what that odor is in Garfield Ridge at 5:45 a.m. on Saturday 4/21? It woke me up. Inside the house, I first thought it resembled a "wet heat" odor -- like an old radiator smell (but I have gas heat). Opened the front door and was hit with a much stronger smell -- almost like some garlic/onion/spice combination, but with a more chemical note. It stuck to my clothes in the 3 seconds that I was out there. I've smelled lots of foul things around here over the years, but this particular odor is new to me.

  • Cindy G Good neighbor

Carlos, the Garfield Ridge Neighborhood Watch page on Facebook had a cryptic post the other day (4/16) that might be of interest to you. It reads:

    "Garfield Ridge Neighborhood Watch
    April 16 at 9:44am ·

Looking for the couple that was walking the neighborhood yesterday around 57th and Newcastle. We believe we have the owner of the item you found. Please contact us asap."

Maybe it's related, maybe not, but you can go on Facebook and check it out. Their phone number is (855) 811-8477.

    Good luck with that ring.

Garfield Ridge library

Where was the Garfield Ridge library’s original location?

  • Daniel Ferone Home Owner

I remember in the late 50's & early 60's it was a Library bus or van.

Sometime later it was store front located on Archer east of Oak Park on the south side of the street.about 6743 S. Archer.

Prior to the current location I believe it was at 6322 S Archer which became an eye doctor's office.

  • Many spots used bookmobile. One driver and 1-3 librarians. Would travel from location to another. They were fazed out in the 80's

Stop Donating to the Humane Society of the United States! Why???

Many Chicagoans are animal-lovers-- as myself--so learning of this outrage involving a long-standing 'animal-welfare' organization, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), I had to post. Here's a link to Humane Watch group, that 'outed' the abuses of HSUS.

A family member showed me a letter from Humane Watch, detailing allegations against heads of HSUS. It was sent to all who donated to the HSUS in the past (apparently, H.W. has the same lists). Describing:

A family member showed me a letter from Humane Watch, detailing allegations against heads of HSUS. It was sent to all who donated to the HSUS in the past (apparently, H.W. has the same lists). Describing:

-HSUS uses the "humane" tag to emotionally prey on the public (deliberately confusing
& taking away funds from local shelters using that same tagname, "humane society").
- HSUS has "Zero Pet Shelters"--count 'em-- 0!!; giving a measly 1% of its $120 Mil budget to local shelters
- Its CEO & VP-- now both gone (Wayne Paelle, a 20-year top-dog there who was getting paid 380K a year, & Paul Shapiro, were both accused of years-long sexual harassment & abuse of employees, interns, & volunteers; involving threats, payoffs (w. donor funds!) & punishments (demotions, etc.).
- The Board of Directors (most still extant!), were mostly hand-picked by Paelle & enabled this perverse climate to go on for years
- HSUS spends 1/2 its large budget on raising MORE money (via galas, Hollywood bashes, etc.)! Recently, one of their companies was fined by the FTC for "deceptive fundraising"; & in a federal case, it was fined an $11 million "racketeering fine" for paying a federal witness under the table!
- IRS records reveal HSUS has socked away $50 million in donor monies to various Caribbean accounts; absolutely no transparency, explanation, oversight!

Shred any HSUS mailings pronto!!
Instead, donate to local animal shelters & welfare organizations to help the animals in your communities.
Vet any larger national orgs (animal welfare or otherwise) that you are considering donating your hard-earned dollars to in the future.

Lost car key 3/9

In parking lot s/e corner of 56th and Harlem Ave. Its a car key with a chip and I can't afford to replace it right now. If you have it and dont know how to get it back to the rightful owner, you can drop it off at the hair cutting shop. Leave your info and receive a $25 Dunkin Donut gift card. Thank you

  • James A Micek Proud Homeowner

I actually felt awkward going to that meeting (which I never attended) just to get the DD gift card. I was just glad to be of help. May I suggest giving the gift card to someone who could really use it? Perhaps a homeless person?
    Thanks, ;)

  • srapach GR civic member

You need not have felt awkward it's a meeting open to the public. And, you would have learned about the Home equity program. I will donate the card to a needy person as you requested.
